News Articles from the Pupils of Belton All Saints Church of England Primary School Mrs Black Retires By Phoebe Craighill and Holly Laws (Y5) Mrs Black has been an amazing Deputy Headteacher for an astonishing ten years in our school. She has decided to retire at the end of this term and will sadly be leaving us. She has taught loads of different classes in Key Stage 2. She is great at teaching French because she made it fun. She loves teaching literacy and was good at helping us develop our story writing as well as helping us improve our drama skills. Overall she has been a wonderful teacher and we will be sad to see Mrs Black with her go. Bon Voyage Mrs Black, and good luck for the members of Year 5 future. Footprints from the past By Teigan Shaw & Rio Crisp (Y4) Our favourite topic from our year in year 4 has been ‘Footprints from the Past’ because it has been all about dinosaurs. Our topic started with some homework over the holidays to design and make our own dinosaur egg. We then had to describe the type of dinosaur that would emerge from the egg. We wrote poems and stories. The one day during assembly on of the eggs had hatched and a dinosaur was rampaging through the school. It had made an Millie Turner, Zach Smith enormous mess in the classroom and left footprints in the cloakroom. Then we and George Johnson with imagined what could have really happened if the dinosaur was in the school. their dinosaur models Luckily it didn’t cause any problems! We research dinosaurs from the Triassic, Jurassic and Cretaceous periods and build some fantastic models. We ended the topic by making a great display of all our work for open evening when our Mums and Dads came to see it. Gardening Club members with our Barrow in Bloom entry

Gardening Club By Olivia Lane, Molly Thompson, Emily Exton & Dan Hellewell (Y6&5) Over the past term we have had a Gardening Club after school. We tidied up the garden areas and did some weeding. Then we planted a range of vegetables such as potatoes, carrots, onions, cauliflower and cucumber. Some people brought plants from home for us to care for; the Reception class also had their own little allotment. Some of our salad crops have been used by the kitchen for our school dinners. We held a plant sale after school and at the Summer Fair and raised £30.40 some of this will be used next year to buy new seeds. The rest of the money was used to buy plants for the school’s entry into Belton’s Barrow in Bloom competition which will be judged on Sunday 13 th July. Thank you to Mrs Holland and Mrs Thompson for helping us with this club.

TRAVELLING LIGHT Earlier this month I visited a friend and was surprised to see a hire van on his drive-- an unusual sight. The explanation was given that his daughter was at university and at the end of term no family car was up to the task of bring back all her belongings- a van had to be hired. There was the additional comment that the student did not use most of the belongings and clothes, but they were there with her- just in case. It seems a long way since my days at university when all my belongings were sent in a trunk via British Road Services as it then was. The neighbour was a little embarrassed at this and explained that his daughter took everything possible. I have recently returned from holiday and was concerned at the luggage we had with us—suitcases and assorted bags, and we did seem to return with more than we set out with. I’m not sure we travelled lightly, and especially when I compare this with another friend who travels with only a backpack-and a small one at that. Now that is travelling light! It speaks to me similar to the way we surround ourselves with more and more, and clutter up our lives. The friend who travels light has the gift of knowing just what he needs for the journey, the student at university perhaps not. Whether it is our longer holidays, our short excursions, or our life, what a gift it is to know what we need for the journey! Rev David Leese, Wesley Manse, Epworth.

Now & Then - Then & Now No. 64
By Anthony Catherall
This month and every month see Epworth in bygone days and compare to today's images!
Joanne Thompson aged 3 years, stands outside her Grandfather's 'C. Spencer' decorators shop, circa 1966 at High Street Epworth. Former POW (Prisoner of War) in Italy and Master Decorator Clifford Spencer bought this shop above from a Mr Leggott. He learnt his trade at Baines of Crowle. Many people of Epworth employed Clifford during his time at his shop to decorate their homes. "A real craftsman, could Cliff hang wallpaper" an older resident told me recently". Today, Julie Thompson (daughter of Clifford & Mary, formerly of Graizelound) lives in the bungalow behind the current shop and she told me, "Bill & me took over following Dad's retirement we have very fond memories of that shop, with a our shed and small orchard (pictured above) at the rear. There was also a garage that was behind the brick wall between the shop and the first ground floor window, we later converted it to make a larger shop. We used to trim the wall paper in the room above where we see the two windows fronting the street. Julie goes on to say that, the next owners were Dennis & Jean Turner who then sold it onto Tony Chu. In my opinion, the exterior faรงade on the corner today, looks ugly and garish complete with extractor tubing unconcealed at the rear. I'm surprised planners allow such features that spoil the look of this business today, in the rather quaint Epworth High Street, surely influencing visitors, as my picture of Spring 2014 clearly shows. Pleasing though, we at last have another useful decorators shop today situated at Albion Hill.

Trentside Federation School News (St Martin’s Owston Ferry and West Butterwick C of E Primary Schools) There is always so much to squeeze in, amongst the usual curriculum studies at this late point in the Summer Term, such as Sports Afternoons and Leavers’ Services. We have managed it……. West Butterwick held its Sports afternoon on Thursday 26 th June and I am pleased to say that this year the weather was very kind to us. Overall Winners at West Butterwick were the Red Team. Sports Afternoon at St Martin’s also went ahead with blue skies! Trophy winners at St Martin’s were Maisie Speers, Finlay Phillips, Jack Harrison, Maisie Smith, Isaac Metcalfe, Jackson Swales, Abigail Platt, Olivia Francis and Harry Watts . The winning team overall was Kinnard (Red). Congratulations to all concerned and thank you to our helpers for making these occasions so enjoyable, especially the Parent Helpers and Grandparents for providing those delicious cream teas and other refreshments! Looking back over the last few weeks, there are a number of special events to mention in addition to the above. West Butterwick School welcomed Scunthorpe C of E Primary School on a reciprocal visit. It was lovely to have a chance to catch up with ‘pupil pen friends’ that were established back in the Autumn Term. Our guests enjoyed a visit to Coggon Bros restored windmill, riverside observational drawing, a ‘Features of our Village’ trail and quiz and a worship service in St Mary’s Church delivered by our Lighting the Candle Pupil Worship Leaders. Such visits are interesting from a cultural and social perspective as we can compare and contrast by experiencing different communities first-hand. On 1st July, six South Isle Primary Schools and South Axholme Academy took part in a Year 5 Pilgrimage Event at St Andrew’s Church, Epworth. It was super to come together for a ‘celebration and exploration’ of special journeys and spirituality. On 3 rd July, West Butterwick School participated in ‘Songs of World War One’ at the Baths Hall, Scunthorpe. Twelve schools in North Lincolnshire performed a number of pieces, including ‘It's a long way to Tipperary’, ‘Pack up your Troubles’ and a debut of ‘On the River Marne’ by Martin Watson. They were accompanied by a ‘Music Service Instrumental Teachers Band’ and directed by Sue Hollingworth. There were selected readings from the ‘War Horse’ by Michael Morpurgo. The pupils dressed up ‘in-period’ and parents and carers were able to attend also. It was a memorable commemorative occasion. West Butterwick enjoyed sporting success recently, through participating in the ‘Small Schools’ School Games Competition’ at the Costello Stadium in Hull on 7 th July. Nineteen small schools took part. West Butterwick came third in the Golf and second in the Orienteering. We are looking forward to more competitive sporting events in the Autumn Term. Both schools in our Federation are coming together for a visit to the Thackray Museum on 16th July. The Thackray Medical Museum is one of the UK’s largest medical museums and July is ‘Ancient Medicine’ month. This visit will support the Science work of Key Stage 2 pupils linked to The Human Body, as a first-hand educational, entertaining and inspirational experience. As we are now approaching the end of the academic year we are preparing for our Leavers’ Services. Sadly, will be saying ‘goodbye and good luck’ to our Year 6 Leavers on 18th and 22nd July at their special Leavers’ Services of Celebration ; St Martin’s – Charlotte C-N, Ellis, Natasha, Declan, Olivia, Callum, Alexia, Holly, Josh, Tom, Bradley and Harry. West Butterwick – Seb, Travis, Ellie, Eve, Danielle and Daniel. We thank them for all their valuable contributions over the years they have been with us.

ISLE OF AXHOLME INAUGURAL TRACTOR RUN By Anthony Catherall A month ago, in the most perfect of weather conditions, 42 vintage tractors left the Mowbray Arms car park Epworth on Sunday, 22 June, for the 30 mile trip around roads and tracks in the Central Isle of Axholme. Leading the way was one of the primary organisers Stuart Lindley in his huge John Deere tractor. With almost military precision, the radio controlled convoy of vintage tractors driven by both men and women, traversed unseen parts of North Lincolnshire. Central in the line of tractors was co-organiser Richard Thompson, whilst Geoff Fillingham brought up the rear with a trailer in tow for any breakdowns. I’m pleased to report that there were none. I travelled with driver Ridian Stock in the front Marshall Vehicle, experiencing and enjoying beautiful varied farmland, moving through places in the Isle that I never knew existed, including, Greenham Lane, close to South Engine drain, Haxey Carr and Rocket Lane. Probably another first is that this particular route negotiated some of the lowest and certainly the highest places in the Isle. On the few occasions the convoy emerged onto hard metalled roads passing lovely houses and gardens, many spectators were waiving and cheering as we passed by, the atmosphere was happy and infectious. On schedule at mid-day, the long trail of vehicles trundled along the High Street at Owston Ferry, before parking up alongside the Trent on a very green grassy bank north of the White Hart. The free food and service in the pub was excellent thanks to Pete Smith, welcoming all drivers and associated staff during the one hour break, cask ale was on sale at just two pounds a pint. West Butterwick, the second village we passed through also had roadside spectators as the convoy turned left along West Street shortly to join tracks again to cross Moore’s Farm and Melwood Grange farmland. Emerging at Quarry corner on the Epworth to Ferry road, the convoy was on a hard surface again for the final jaunt back to Mill Farm in Epworth at about 2.40 pm. Many people were gathering in and around the Mowbray pub expectant of the final treat of the day, a fly-past by one of the six Spitfires of the Battle of Britain Memorial Flight based at RAF Coningsby. Surprising many, exactly at 3pm, the distinctive growl could be heard of the Mk 9 Super Marine clipped wing Spitfire engine, as it came in from the south-west completing four passes by zooming low over the area at about 280mph. The livery of this particular aircraft being one of the last versions of Spitfire’s, was white and grey striped as used in the D day landings. During the run, Graham Kelsey and Dave Knowles helped with the video filming whilst his wife Denise was cajoling us all to buy raffle tickets, she seemed everywhere. The Mowbray Arms must also be thanked for their hospitality. All helpers and there were many, including the main organisers wives and friends must be thanked for their tremendous efforts in making the event most successful. The entrants themselves, were most complimentary of both the interesting and varied route together with terrific organisation, saying they will definitely be back next year. On Thursday 26 June, the official presentation of all the monies raised took place at Lindsey Lodge Hospice in Scunthorpe. Fund raising Manager Vivian Vincent, was delighted to receive a bucketful of cash from the three main organisers totalling a tremendous £1945. Head of fundraising Mel Banham also in attended. The Lindsey Lodge Garden Party and the Second Isle of Axholme Tractor Run will be held again next year 20 on Sunday 21 June 2015, “The a date for your diary”. Please mention Arrow” when responding to advertisements For early entry into next year’s event contact Geoff Fillinghan email: roders213@icloud.com – telephone 07974433545 A video of the 2014 event will be available shortly, contact Geoff also for your copy.

Epworth Music Day a Big Hit! What a glorious sight in Epworth on Saturday when it was Epworth Music Day! Crowds thronging about all day through the town, stopping to listen and watch as 40 groups played and sang at 11 venues throughout the town. Event organiser Peter Barnard said ‘Someone commented that it felt like being at the seaside – perhaps Whitby – with the lovely sunshine and lots of people milling about to soak up the atmosphere. Although we couldn’t count them all, we think that there were about 1000 people out enjoying the music. It was the year’s longest day and the town was full of music of all types played outdoors from 10am to 5pm for people to enjoy. Then in the evening the music carried on in St Andrew’s Church when over 160 people crowded in to catch another 3 hours of music. Thanks to everyone involved – all the performers, the organisers and stewards and not least Epworth Town Council, North Lincolnshire Council and Harold Woolgar Insurances for their financial backing. From now on Epworth Music Day will stick to a Saturday and next year it will be on 20 June 2015. Mark it in your diary now!’

“This lovely boy is Bobo, a lovely Collie Terrier Cross who we believe is around 7-8 years old. Bobo has had an awful life so far, spending most of his time chained up, with very little exercise. Despite this, he is a friendly, quiet and gentle boy who desperately needs a loving home where he can have company, but his own quiet space when he needs it. He would suit a quieter family, or an older person with limited mobility, as he doesn’t need long walks. He is happy to sit at your side, and loves snoozing in the sun. If you would like to meet this special boy, please give Isle Rescue a call on 01427 728705.”

THE ALZHEIMER’S SOCIETY IS THE UK’S LEADING CARE AND RESEARCH CHARITY FOR PEOPLE WITH DEMENTIA AND THOSE WHO CARE FOR THEM. Through campaigning and lobbying we strive to influence government policies and raise awareness of the challenges faced by people with dementia and the people who care for them. And through our research programme we work to improve the knowledge we have about dementia and its treatment - and pursuing the ultimate goal of finding a cure Our vision is of a radically improved world for people with dementia. A world where they can have their rights recognised, where they can fully contribute to family and community life and where they can live with dignity, free from discrimination. A world where they, and those who care for them, have their needs fully met. A world, ultimately, where dementia can be defeated. STATISTICS One in three people over 65 develop dementia. There are 800,000 people with dementia in the UK. Dementia costs the UK ??23 billion, more than heart disease, stroke and cancer. People over 55 fear dementia more than any other condition, including cancer. By 2017, Alzheimer’s Society aims to invest 10 million a year in dementia research There are over 17,000 people under 65 with dementia in the UK. Only 43 per cent of people with dementia in the UK receive a formal diagnosis. Two thirds of people in care homes have a form of dementia. One third of people with dementia live in a care home. Two thirds of people with dementia live in the community Providing effective support in the community to reduce the time a person with dementia spends on a hospital ward by one week could save at least ??80 million a year. Up to 150,000 people with dementia in the UK are being inappropriately prescribed antipsychotic drugs and these are contributing to 1,800 deaths a year. Dementia is a worldwide challenge. There are currently nearly 36 million people with dementia in the world and the numbers are expected to double every 20 years.

Now Is The Time Dear readers, Now is a good time to treat your car to a spring clean. Salt is a corrosive and will cause rusting if left on the bodywork. If possible take your car to a car wash that specialises in under-car cleaning to get rid of every trace. The UK pollen season starts around now and can be pretty miserable for hay fever sufferers, so replacing your car’s pollen filter annually is a vital investment. Keeping your air-con well maintained would help, too. Servicing your air-con will help your car smell better. If it smells stale when you turn the heating on, it could well be a sign that mould is building up in your condenser. Flies will soon be out in force so be sure to refill your washer fluid. Habitually washing the windscreen and headlamps when you stop for fuel is also important as windscreen wipers won’t get rid of all the fly debris. Old wiper blades are not only deafening, they can leave marks on the windscreen, so remember to replace them regularly. After the dust that has fallen from the volcanic ash cloud, it is particularly important that you clean them regularly to avoid damaging your windscreen. Checks should be made regardless of the season: “Anti-freeze contains corrosion inhibitors so you should keep your car topped up with the right mixture all year round; going without could lead to expensive internal damage such as a blown head gasket,” added Mr Rodger.
