Welcome to the August issue of Epworth and Belton Arrow Summer’s out!! We are now well in to the long summer break for schools and colleges across our region and it is anticipated that millions of us will be jetting off on our holidays, especially with all the limitations over the past 2 years. News is circulating with regard to Doncaster airports closure, this was the key to Doncaster’s successful city status bid and has become a hugh blow just weeks after celebrating its status as part of the Queen’s platinum Jubilee celebrations. Please support your local airport by signing the petition. https://www.change.org/p/save-doncastersheffield-airport? Any local news or events please keep in touch for the next issue of the Arrow. Enjoy the read. The deadline for the September issue is Thursday 11th August for delivery by the 1st of the month.

A Roaring Success Isle Choral Singers Summer Concert Saturday the 9th was the day of the Choral Singers summer concert in St Nicholas Church in Haxey, and was also the first public appearance , with the choir, of Robert Steadman their new musical director and conductor. Robert, who very recently got married, is a composer and conductor. He grew up in Hampshire and went on to study music at Oxford University. He has composed music for the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, the percussionist Evelyn Glennie, and an opera with the author Richard Adams. He currently conducts two choirs and an orchestra - the Isle Choral Singers being one of them - as well as working with various theatre groups. He moved to live in Lincolnshire in 2013. The concert was well attended, and the audience showed their enjoyment and appreciation of the programme with rousing applause, smiles, foot tapping, and with one or two, their own conducting of the music. The programme of music was widely varied with a medley from Les Miserables, songs from 2 different Andrew Lloyd Webber musicals, one or two from the world of films and some traditional tunes to set the hips wiggling and the toes tapping, which Robert urged the audience to join in with if they so wished. A few did, but very quietly. Maurice, the choirs' accompanist played beautifully, as always, and added to the total effect of the evening. Maurice, himself, is an accomplished musician and composer and does a splendid job for the choir. Mr Nick Haines, a former musical director of the choir, made a guest appearance, playing on the church organ in the first half of the programme, and on the modern keyboard, with a little more upbeat selection, in the second half of the programme. The choir is holding a "meet the choir" evening in the Imperial hall in Epworth on July 11th to allow anyone, who may feel that singing is fun, uplifting and good for the mental wellbeing, to go along and meet the choir members and discover for themselves that it's even better if singing with a group of friendly, helpful people and so continue to join in, after the choirs summer break, and prepare for the Christmas concert. If interested in joining the choir you can always get in touch via their facebook page "Isle Choral Society" where you will find contact details, or simply watch out for notification that rehearsals have begun again, after the summer break, in the Imperial Hall in Epworth, and go along at 7pm. Epworth Music Day 2022 The threatened rain didn’t arrive in Epworth until teatime, and by then Epworth had been in party mode since 9.30am. Afterall, it was Epworth Music Day – the biggest event in the town’s calendar, and there was a common wish to banish the woes we have all experienced over the past 2 years. Peter Barnard, Co-Director of the day, said ‘This was the 7th one we’ve organised, and what a great event it was! Over 90 hours of music to sample for free at the 14 different venues around Epworth, with nearly 60 sets of performers across a wide range of genres. It’s such a great showcase for Epworth. As well as many people from the Isle who came out to have a great time on the day, we had a lot of visitors from further afield! The local shops, cafes and pubs all had a chance to benefit from all this extra footfall. During the daytime, music echoed around Epworth from 9.30am when the bells of St Andrew’s Church rang out, to 5pm. Then the evening concert in the church was completely full, as were The Queen’s Head, The Old School Inn and The White Bear which had all organised their own music till late. It was glorious to see so many people enjoying themselves amid all the wonderful entertainment, and with the road closure in the centre of town, the crowds spilled across the roads and pavements listening to the music. We’ve received so many messages of thanks for staging the event. We want to thank all the performers who took part on Saturday. All the venues and service providers. All the spectators and listeners. Epworth Town Council for their financial support. All the stewards. All my Epworth Music Day committee members. And most of all my fellow director, Kate Billmore. It was her and my idea to create this wonderful celebration of live music in North Lincolnshire, and we're so proud of how fabulously it ran. We're not going to make Epworth Music Day into something it's not. It'll continue to be held in the centre of the town and outdoors; to be a free to attend event; and it will be about promoting and celebrating the power of live music. A real community event, put on by the community for the community. Next year it's on Saturday 24th June. Add it to your diary now and spread the word! If you want to play at it or would like to help us organise and run it, contact me at peter.barnard@me.com’

Crowle Peatland Railway
We hosted a couple of schools from the Isle who came to the Railway after visiting the Landscape Partnership Exhibition at the North Lincolnshire Museum. They were treated to a ride on the railway and found out more about the history and heritage of the Moors. We have also hosted a number of walking groups who have enjoyed a guided walk onto Crowle & Thorne Moors followed by a full lunch in moorside cafe. If you think we could organise an event for your family or a group you are a member of, please get in touch (angus@townley.com) Many thanks to all who attended our June open weekend which included a craft market in the 'Goat Shed'. We were blessed with good weather and it was great to see so many people enjoying themselves. We were able to operate with two separate locomotives - the Wickham Trolley and our Simplex 'Little Peat'. Open Weekends Our programme of Open Weekends continues and the next event in August will be our Food & Beer Festival. In addition to stalls from local food producers, we will be selling beers from the Pig Barn Brewery in Haxey and the Axhole Brewery Company. August 13 - 14 - Local Food & Beer Festival There will be train rides and the cafe will be open from 10 am to 4 pm on both Saturday & Sunday for the following dates. Work continues on fully restoring the Lisbon Tram and we will shortly be constructing carriages using wagon bases that have been kindly donated by Stadfold Barn Railway in Staffordshire. We are also working on completing the ballasting of the track and construction of platforms at both ends of the line. Some of this work will be carried out by Students from North Lindsey College in Scunthorpe. Would you like to help us? We need help in all areas and not just in maintaining and running the railway. Would you be able to help; - in the cafe? - writing a members' newsletter? - gardening and keeping the grounds smart? - help in the workshop? - running the railway? - or any other skills we might need? Is there any other way you could help us? All necessary training provided! If you are interested in becoming a member and volunteering please feel free to drop into one of our work parties on Wednesday and Saturday mornings - we are a friendly bunch and always looking for new willing hands. The cafe is becoming a regular date in many people's diaries. In addition to being open during Open Weekends we are open for; - Afternoon Tea on the First Wednesday of the Month (August 3rd) (pre-booking essential - Julie 07584 261066) - Sunday Brunch (10:00am-12:00Noon) on the Third Sunday each Month (August 21st). We would like to be open at other times but need sufficient numbers of volunteers to make this happen.
