It seems hard to believe that it is now 5 years ago since my own young family was locked into a struggle with adversity in which there were no winners, each tiny victory weighed against the inexorable march of a rampant disease hell bent on destruction. Anna died on the night of 19 November 2013. Since that date, the small group of trustees with friends and people we have met along the way has raised money to support over 70 families with second opinion to potentially improve their prognosis; we have funded over 750 counselling sessions, paid for 8 research grants into statistically less significant cancers (i.e. fewer people get them) and assisted those undergoing treatment by providing 183 travel support packages and 136 hotel rooms in that period. I would really like us to be able to hit the magic half a million mark by the time we hit the fifth anniversary on 19 November 2018. If you can host a coffee morning, ask work to hold a dress down day, do an event or come up with another way to help us, then now is the time. Thank you Paul

We meet weekly in St Nicholas Church Hall, Haxey starting at 7.30 pm to approximately 9.30 pm. We are a very friendly club and welcome any newcomers. The annual subscription is £10.00 plus £2.00 for each meeting attended (reduced for under 18s) which includes tea/coffee and biscuits. Feel free to contact any Camera Club member you may know or give Joyce Hooley a call on 01427 752323 or just turn up on the night.

ROYAL AIR FORCE LINDHOLME Adapted and Edited for publication by Anthony Catherall acknowledgement to Margaret Draper It is around this time that the Station Farm began to receive increasing publicity. It was official policy to encourage all forms of cultivation and even in 1945 the station was still playing its part in the wartime ‘Dig for Victory’ campaign. Group Captain Clelland, who was himself a Herefordshire farmer’s son, was determined to increase the eight acres already under cultivation. By July 1946 he had persuaded the Acting Station Warrant officer, one Flight Sergeant Eric Graville, to become Farm Bailiff upon his demobilisation. Mr Graville’s original task was to ensure the clearance of barbed wire, concrete standings and gorse bushes from the camp area. At first, Italian prisoners of war from Sheffield were used for the job but their work rate, predictably slow, was proof against the offer of cigarettes and similar bribes. Their replacement by German prisoners of war changed everything. Not only was the clearance completed but German bricklayers built the piggery that still stands at Lindholme today. The Station Commander also took the precaution on ensuring that this new Station Administrative Officer had a farming background. Squadron Leader Lester Davies, now Warden of the Ullswater Outward Bound School, had spent a year before the war as a student at Wye Agricultural College. It was he and Mr Graville who did most to ensure the success of the project and to gain for Lindholme’s farm a reputation second to none throughout the Royal Air Force. Station farms were common in those days; food was scarce, rationing was in force and the farms provided a supply of fresh vegetables to the Messes and profits to PSI. Lindholme was the first Royal Air Force station to exhibit at the Royal Show and this was reported in the national press. The Daily Mail report was under the, ‘But No Wings’ (1), and told of the success of two members of the station Wessex Saddleback pig-herd, ‘Luffenham Perfect’ and ‘Luffenham Rosalind’. In the show; the former gained 3rd prize in his class and the latter was highly commended in hers. The station farm had bought three sows from Royal Air Force North Luffenham when that station closed in 1946 and ‘Perfect’ was a son of Luffenham Princess, one of these sows. 1948 began with the visit to the station of the Right Honourable Tom Williams, the local MP, who had ten years before raised the question of the Irish labourers in the House of Commons. He was now Minister of Agriculture and his main purpose was to visit the station farm and model piggery. Thirty or forty pressmen accompanied the Minister and the next day the Lindholme farm was mentioned in nearly every national paper. The reports show that the Royal Air Force had over 2,000 acres under cultivation at the time and that at Lindholme nearly 47 acres were being farmed and that a profit of over £700 had been made in the previous year. The success story continued, Luffenham Perfect being placed first in his class in the 1948 Royal Show and subsequently sold for 350 guineas, a record national price for a pig. One could continue to chronicle the station farm’s successes in great detail, for they were many and frequent. Throughout the decade between 1946 and 1956, when the last Royal Air Force Horticultural Show was held, Lindholme consistently won first, second or third place in the Unit Farms competition and frequently won the Sherwood Cup for the best vegetable display. In 1948, Squadron Leader Davies appeared on Joan Gilbert’s TV show to talk about the Lindholme farm after the Sherwood Cup had been won the first time. The Lindholme farm outlived the Royal Air Force Show by one year; as prosperity and plenty returned the need for intensive cultivation was deemed to be over. In 1957 the farm was sold to Mr Graville, the man to whom the station owed so much of its success. The farm must be seen in a proper perspective, for it was only in the background of the station’s story. However, since it gained the station so much publicity any station history must record its prowess. But life on the station was continuing all the while. On Sunday 9th September a 9 year old pupil from Epworth Primary Academy walked the Humber Bridge both ways to raise money for Bluebell Wood Children’s Hospice and Lexi’s Legacy. Annabel Amy Malam told her Mum she would like to help children less fortunate than herself and decided she would walk the Humber Bridge both ways. Within a few days she had asked for sponsorship from local businesses and set up a Just Giving website. Within a few days she had raised £300 for Bluebell Wood Children’s Hospice and £187 for Lex’s Legacy. Although still recovering from tonsillitis she bravely finished her walk in style wearing only her socks as her trainers had rubbed her little toe!! Annabel is a very kind and caring little girl a real ‘star’ and her Mum, Sister and grandparents (who accompanied her) are so very proud of her. Annabel is now planning her next ‘venture’ !!

Candlelight and Supper in the Kitchen Have you seen Susanna's kitchen on a daylight tour? Or maybe even not seen it at all? If either of these fit you, then you need to join us on one of our candlelit tours. Come and see the house as the Wesleys might have lived in it. Picture an early winter evening, light gone from the sky, no street lighting or anything similar as there's no electricity. Darkness is the order of the day. You've spent time working outside, or maybe travelling back from market in Bawtry and you open the door to enter. You step inside to the warm glow of the candles on the table and dresser, and the welcome heat and flare of the blazing fire in the entrance hall with the smell of wood smoke and maybe something savoury emanating from the kitchen. Home at last to comfort and supper. All this and more awaits you on the candlelit tour. You'll be welcomed by a costumed guide with whom you wait until all the expected parties arrive, then you will be led by lantern light to the front door where you knock for entrance. The door is opened by another costumed guide who welcomes you in, just as you would have been had it been in the early 18th century. From there, with only candles to light your way, you are taken around the whole house and introduced to the story of the Wesley family and some of the activities that happened in the house, activities that changed the world almost as much as it has been changed by wars and conflict. Of course those changes are much less violent than conflict, but no less important. You will end your tour in the kitchen, and sit around the table in front of another welcoming fire and have the opportunity to talk to each other and to your guides while you enjoy your repast. Hot fruit punch and home made pies and cakes to tempt your palate. Hot water crust pastry filled with pork flavoured with sage and onion and a layer of Bramley apple, mince pies, fruit cake with butter and cheese, maybe sausage rolls, or mushroom tarts. Who knows what culinary delights await you. The only way to find out is to join us, and we'd love to share our evening with you. Booking is essential, and places are limited, so call the Rectory and stake your place. We can take payment by card over the phone so don't let anything delay you. We look forward to seeing you all on either the 6th or the 7th of December. Cath Fordham
