ROYAL AIR FORCE LINDHOLME Adapted and Edited for publication by Anthony Catherall Acknowledgement to Margaret Draper
CHAPTER ONE Winston Churchill in his ‘History of the Second World War’ gives a former Prime Minister, Stanley Baldwin, short shrift in blaming him for the loss of air superiority over the Germans in the middle 1930’s. Whether this is completely fair to Baldwin is debatable, but what is not open to debate is that the Royal Air Force was lagging badly behind its potential foe, the Luftwaffe. It was the realisation of this and the subsequent efforts made to close the gaps that led, amongst many other things, to the creation of Royal Air Force, Hatfield Woodhouse, later to be known as Royal Air Force, Lindholme. The Official History of the Royal Air Force points out that the new airfield building programme of the late 1930’s was based on the probability of war with Germany and not with France, up till then thought of as the most likely enemy. Thus, it was completed to a geographical pattern very different from previous building programmes. In 1934, our airfields were based largely in the Home Counties. The new airfield locations clearly indicated Germany as the potential foe and were sited in the Eastern part of the country, in Yorkshire, Lincolnshire and East Anglia. It was here that the long-range striking force of the future would be based; yet in 1934, there had been only one operational Airfield in that area. The builders of the new airfields had many problems to face: “Since ‘business as usual’ was until 1938 the Government’s motto for industry the land-owner and farmer could fairly claim its application to agriculture. The result was that the Air Ministry’s proposals for new airfields, schools and camps met with constant opposition in the countryside. Air gunnery and bombing ranges were especially unpopular, for even if some miracle of selection lighted on a spot at once suited to the purpose and void of human haunt or habitation, voices were rarely lacking to defend the rights of the local wild-fowl. In one case a colony of swans was held to be threatened, but fortunately the birds, when their supporters lost the day, rapidly adjusted themselves to their new and noisier surroundings”. (1) There were no wild birds to consider at Hatfield Woodhouse; at least no-one came to their defence. One of the local newspapers published an article in May 1938, which gave news of the building of a new airfield locally. It reported that the owner of ‘Clowne’s Farm’, a Mr Haresign had sold his 400-acre property to the Air Ministry. The report went on: “Surveying the land has already begun and it is expected that the Ministry will take occupation by 1st June. The district is ideal for aerodrome purposes as the land is flat and free from tall trees and buildings for miles around”. (2) The same paper carried a progress report in September 1938, when the construction work was in full swing,

MATISSE Drawing with Scissors. Late Works 1950-1954 A Hayward Touring Exhibition The Point, Doncaster
Henri Matisse Nu bleu II (Blue Nude II), 1952 Gouache découpée 116,2 x 88,9cm DACS Gouache découpée 116,2 x 88,9cm Arts Council Collection DACS
4th November 2017 - 7th January 2018 The French painter, sculptor and designer, Henri Matisse (1869-1954) was one of the 20th century’s most influential artists. His vibrant works are celebrated for their extraordinary richness and luminosity of colour and his spectacular paper cut-outs were his final triumph. Matisse: Drawing with Scissors, a Hayward Touring exhibition from the Southbank Centre features 35 posthumous prints of the famous cut-outs that he produced in the last four years of his life, when confined to his bed. It includes many of his iconic images, such as The Snail and the Blue Nudes. It comes to The Point, Doncaster from November 4th 2017.
Matisse continued creating highly original works into his eighties. For his cut-outs he used paper hand-painted with gouache, which he carved into with scissors: ‘the paper cut-out allows me to draw in the colour … Instead of drawing the outline and putting the colour inside it…I draw straight into the colour’. The colours he used were so strong that he was advised by his doctor to wear dark glasses. The lithographic reproductions in this exhibition are taken from a special double issue of Verve, a review of art and literature, published by Matisse’s friend, the critic and fine art publisher Tériade, in 1958, four years after Matisse’s death. Matisse began his working life as a lawyer, before going to Paris to study art in 1890. At first strongly influenced by the Impressionists, he soon created his own style, using brilliant, pure colours, and started making sculptures as well as paintings. In 1905 he and his colleagues were branded the Fauves (wild beasts) because of their unconventional use of colour, and it was during this time that he painted his celebrated Luxe, Calme et Volupté (Luxury, Tranquillity and Delight). ‘There is no gap between my earlier pictures and my cut-outs’, Matisse wrote; ‘I have only reached a form reduced to the essential through greater absoluteness and greater abstraction’. Helen Jones, Assistant Director at The Point said: ‘We feel really privileged to show these beautiful lithographs in Doncaster. It is a fantastic opportunity for people to see such exquisite artworks and take inspiration from one of the greatest artists of the 20th Century.’
Tutoring available for GCSE Combined Science, Biology, Chemistry and Physics
During the exhibition, on Saturday 18th November local artist Karen Hall will be offering family workshops to create a bright and colourful poster to take home using a wonderful selection of vivid coloured papers inspired by the ‘Drawing with Scissors’ exhibition. Doncaster Sheffield Airport launches airspace consultation A public consultation on proposed changes to the airspace around Doncaster Sheffield Airport (DSA) has been launched which will outline potential minor changes to the routes that aircraft depart and arrive into the airport. DSA is participating in a UK-wide initiative to modernise airspace known as the Future Airspace Strategy (FAS) backed by the Civil Aviation Authority (CAA), which will involve moving away from the traditional ground-based navigation and over to a new satellite navigation system known as Area Navigation (RNAV). The government’s objectives to modernise UK airspace policy are a welcome step which could bring wider benefits across the UK such as noise reduction, less CO2 and other emissions, plus fuel and time savings. The airport has taken the opportunity to utilise this new technology to develop and consult on improved departure and arrival routes from the site, investing over £250,000 in the design process. The new technology will allow aircraft to operate with greater accuracy within their designated flight paths when departing and arriving from DSA. The routes have been designed to be very close to the current routes but improved, where possible, to reduce disruption to communities surrounding the airport. This process will allow us to ensure that we are using our airspace in the most efficient way, whilst also reducing disruption to local communities. We have made considerable efforts to design these proposed routes to the benefit of local communities and to ensure safety. We have worked closely with local stakeholders to develop these proposals, including our Airport Consultative Committee made up of elected representatives, local public agencies, local business, residential communities and airport users. We would encourage all interested parties to participate in the consultation process. The consultation will run until 15th December 2017. More details including the full consultation document can be found on the DSA website:

TRUST ASKS, HAVE YOU A SPECIAL NEED? There is a long history of people in Epworth being keen to help those who live in the area and who may need some assistance. Twenty seven local charities, the oldest originally set up in 1662, are managed by six local Trustees, and exist to try to provide some financial help to individuals who are resident in Epworth and who are in need. In recent years money has been granted: To help a family with small children following a sudden and unexpected bereavement; To provide transport to and from school for the child of a single parent who had to stay with family outside Epworth while the parent was a patient in hospital; To help with the cost of providing a stair lift; To help to purchase a wheel chair; To assist with the cost of respite child care for a single parent suffering an illness; To assist students from the area at University who are finding it difficult to manage financially; To assist apprentices who might have difficulty in purchasing necessary tools or equipment; To assist students at school whose families might have difficulty in budgeting for field trips or special courses. While funds are not limitless, there are many possibilities, but the Scheme approved by the Charity Commission and by which the Epworth Charities are governed means that help can only be given to individuals who live in Epworth and who are in need. It is not possible for the Charities to assist businesses, clubs or organisations. Applications for help can be made in confidence to the Clerk to the Trustees, Michael Ellison, who lives at 1 Paddock Close, Epworth. Applications should be made in writing, but Mr Ellison would be happy to discuss any possible application informally first by telephone on 01427 362524 if that would be helpful.

Brigley House Christmas Lights Double the fun!
Each year we decorate our house in Saffron Way , Crowle with thousands of dancing lights (now over 13,000 to be more precise !) raising funds for local charities. Last year, having ran a vote on our Facebook page, our followers voted that we raise funds for Team Verirco - we were stunned at the response and thrilled to hand over £2,700 to Team Verrico . This year we will be raising funds for another amazing local charity - Pride Of The Isle . During last years vote it was neck and neck in the vote right up to closing the vote - so we are really pleased to be able to support Pride Of The Isle this year and hope to replicate the success of last years show and fund raising success. The dancing lights of Brigley House in Saffron Way, Crowle will light up the dark evenings once again this December and this year it’s double the fun as not one but two houses will jibe part of this years show! Now with over 13,000 lights between the two houses, this years show has a selection of new songs and old favourites and its all shining bright to raise funds for a fantastic local charity - Pride of the Isle. The show runs from 4pm to 10pm every day in December. If you can’t visit in person then you can see a selection of show videos and donate to Pride of the Isle at the Brigley House Facebook page - www.facebook.com/8000lights

All our thousands of visitors during the season from March to October get a fully guided tour of the house as part of our normal service. So what's different in the Candlelit Tours? As the name suggests we have candles for the tour. but not just the guides carrying candles, as they do, but the entire house is lit solely by candle power as the Wesley family would have experienced it during their 40 year residency in Epworth. Not only that, the guides and reception staff are dressed in costume reflecting the 18th century so when visitors come along to the gift shop which is the meeting place for the tours, they are met with, not only an array of quality goods, many of which will make suitable Christmas presents, but a member of the sales and reception team who will be dressed in costume similar to the type worn by Mrs Susanna Wesley and her contemporaries. When all the group are gathered together, they are led by the team member using a lantern to the front door where they are received by guides, in appropriate costumes, into the main entrance hall with the fitful flicker of candles and the glorious warmth of the blazing open fire.
how she educated her children and responded to the needs of the local people in Epworth while enjoying refreshments around the kitchen table, in front of another roaring open fire. Refreshments which include home made pork pie, fruit cake and cheese, mince pies and whatever else we volunteers decide to make for the occasion. Just to encourage you to eat with us try the recipe for our Pork Pie - Hot water crust pastry filled with pieces of chopped pork flavoured with onion, sage, salt and pepper, and topped off with a layer of Bramley apple. Want the real recipe? Come and see us and each guest who wants it can have a copy of our personal recipe free of charge. Do remember though that places are limited and prebooking is essential. Call the office on 01427 872268 as soon as possible to book the last few places.
The house is decorated throughout with seasonal greenery and colourful bows which our guests have time to enjoy as they are taken on a tour around the house, seeing it in the same light as the Wesley family did. Listen to the guides tell the story of Old Geoffrey in the atmospheric conditions of gentle candlelight; hear of the conditions for the family and the achievements of mother and sons; Find out which of our favourite Christmas carols was written so long ago by Charles Wesley; and finally end up in the heart of the home, Susanna's kitchen. From here Susanna started a revolution that, through her sons, became the worldwide Methodist Church. Hear Lindsey Lodge Hospice would like to wish you a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year. Thank you for your support throughout 2017.
