Welcome to the February issue of the Epworth and Belton Arrow.
Not the start we expected in 2021! As I am writing this editorial I am knee deep in snow with temperatures of minus 5 whilst temperatures further up North dropping to minus 11. Speaking to people in the Isle, I believe the snow hasn't arrived! Whilst the snowy scenes outside are beautiful, the roads are icy and treacherous. Please ensure you drive carefully. With the introduction of lockdown 3, ensure you keep safe. The vaccines are well under way. I was pleased to see my mum of 90 years old receiving her first vaccine this week. The NHS have done us all proud. The whole procedure of booking your vaccines to attending was very well organised. A massive project to see millions in the UK receiving their vaccines over the next few months. We applaud you NHS!

It was great to see the Christmas gift appeal do so well. A big well done to Abbie and her helpers on ensuring children in need received a gift. A thank you message is on page 14. I would love to receive any good news from the local community; maybe some planned zoom meeting for your organisations; a special birthday or anything you would like to share with your local community. . The deadline for the March issue is Friday 12th February for delivery by Sunday 28th February. Enjoy the read and keep safe!

Wildlife and Rural Crime Humberside Police are committed to the policing of Wildlife and Rural Crime. We have trained 60 Wildlife Crime Officers (WCOs) who, along with their normal duties, volunteer to investigate and provide advice in relation to wildlife offences. WCOs are specially trained in investigating crimes against wildlife. They will either assist other police officers or take the lead role in the investigation of the more intricate cases, and can also provide advice to colleagues & members of the public. WCOs are able to provide support and advice in relation to Wildlife & Rural Crime, and have a personal interest in this type of work. The Force has now held three National Wildlife Crime courses over the past three years delivered by Craig Fellows. Craig is an expert in the field and delivers the training across the UK. With 60 officers having completed the course we have one of the highest numbers of staff trained, if not the highest in England and Wales. Humberside Police is fast becoming one of the lead forces in the area of wildlife crime within the UK. Investing in staff in this complex area of policing is one of the main ways forward to protect our rural communities and wildlife. Having 60 staff trained, who are prepared to go that extra mile to protect our valuable wildlife for future generations, is a strong sign of our continued commitment to our rural communities. Thousands of virtual viewers support Lyndsey Lodge Thousands of local supporters tuned in to Lindsey Lodge’s Light up a Life virtual service and helped raise a record-breaking £18,000 on Friday 4 December. Lindsey Lodge made the decision to hold their annual remembrance service virtually as a result of Covid-19, to provide people with the opportunity to remember a lost loved one at the end of a very difficult year. Streamed live from the Hospice’s Memorial Garden, the service encouraged viewers to light up a life from home, and has been viewed by over 6,500 people. Lindsey Lodge Chief Executive Karen Griffiths said: “This year saw us having to dramatically adapt our Light up a Life plans to provide a safe service for everyone to enjoy. After making the decision to go virtual this year, we hoped the local community would show their support. “The response we’ve had so far has been phenomenal, our live service has been viewed by thousands and we’ve had our most successful year ever, raising an incredible £18,000 to date. She added: “It was particularly moving to see people’s tributes and comments live as the service commenced, and it made it a very poignant and personal service. Even though we were apart, we were sharing these special moments together. “Thanks to the support of Mayor of North Lincolnshire, Cllr Jonathan Evison, our Hospice Chaplains, members of our Clinical team and bagpiper Danny Fleming, we managed to capture the very special essence of Light up a Life, even when we weren’t all able to be together as normal. “We truly could not have asked for a better response from our local community, so a heartfelt thank you to everyone for their unwavering support during these difficult times.”

Ready, steady, census Households across North Lincolnshire will soon be asked to take part in Census 2021. The census is a once-in-a-decade survey that gives us the most accurate estimate of all the people and households in England and Wales. It has been carried out every decade since 1801, with the exception of 1941. It will be the first run predominantly online, with households receiving a letter with a unique access code, allowing them to complete the questionnaire on their computers, phones or tablets. “A successful census will ensure everyone from local government to charities can put services and funding in the places where they are most needed,” Iain Bell, deputy national statistician at the Office for National Statistics, said. “This could mean things like doctors’ surgeries, schools and new transport routes. That’s why it is so important everyone takes part and we have made it easier for people to do so online on any device, with help and paper questionnaires for those that need them.” Census day will be on March 21, but households across the country will receive letters with online codes allowing them to take part from early March. The census will include questions about your sex, age, work, health, education, household size and ethnicity. And, for the first time, there will be a question asking people whether they have served in the armed forces, as well as voluntary questions for those aged 16 and over on sexual orientation and gender identity. Results will be available within 12 months, although personal records will be locked away for 100 years, kept safe for future generations.

Christmas Gift Appeal Update Doncaster and North Lincolnshire A personal message from Abbie
From originally wanting to help a few families turned into over 650 vulnerable families across Doncaster and North Lincolnshire. Thousands of donations, pre loved and new toys as well as raising over £2500 ! It’s been a rollercoaster full of laughs and tears. How we managed to pull this off in just over a month I will never know! Thank you to each and every one of you that has helped in some way, I honestly could not have done this without you. To my amazing volunteers who have become great friends. To all the volunteers who distributed toys. To the ones who helped with skip runs. To those who helped with drop off locations. To those who wrapped hundreds of selection boxes and to everyone that shared and donated THANK YOU. You don’t realise how you have helped so many struggling families this year. We have helped those who have fled domestic abuse, who have lost a parent, who are struggling with mental health, even families who have never asked for help before but suddenly had to because COVID-19 changed their lives. We went through the professional services to make sure we got the right families in need apart from a few who did personally message me. Christmas was a little different this year and I’m sure I can speak on behalf of the volunteers too. Waking up Christmas morning knowing lots of children received a few presents to open is something very special and it is all thanks to each and everyone of you that helped. Finally I’d like to say a special thank you to my hubby who I hardly saw this past month. Thank you for understanding and being supportive and to my two amazing daughters. The girls spent their evenings after school sorting through the donations and coming with me to pick toys. When they are old enough I am sure they will understand how we all helped create smiles for lots of little children like themselves. 14 Please mention “The Arrow” when responding to advertisements

Epworth Thurlow Fundraising team and the Preschool staff would like to thank everyone who participated in our christmas raffles and to the many local businesses who generously donated. Our raffle prizes were 1st prize-A Christmas Day Food Hamper (complete with meat) 2nd prize- A freshly arranged Fruit basket by D Gravils & Sons (Epworth) We raised a fantastic ÂŁ314.00 which we are told is going towards purchasing a brand new ipad/tab. Well done to our two raffle winners! We had a great response with our Christmas picture competition for the children to get involved with (it was very hard choosing our winners) and requests for personalised letters from Santa. We have lots of new COVID-19 safe fundraising ideas coming up in the very near future so please keep your eyes peeled!

I am 14 years old and practicing hard so I can start busking in York and places in Yorkshire. I play electric and acoustic guitar and love to perform. I love performing but just cant sing very well!! I like playing ROCK and music from the Artic Monkeys and similar sounds. I have the required amp for busking, you would just need a mic. If you would like to join me and have some fun message my mum on aranys@outlook.com and we can arrange a zoom call!
