Our Kiln Dried Firewood Logs are selected from the finest hardwood and have been through a kiln drying process, which means they are perfectly dried and ready to burn on your open fire or wood burning stove. Light, clean and easy to handle, they also emit a delightful aroma when burnt. The performance of your stove is directly related to the quality of the wood you use. Our kiln dried wood has a moisture content between 10 and 20 percent, ensuring it burns hotter for longer, increasing the efficiency of your stove or appliance.

Unfortunately, I have to report that burglary offences are continuing at houses, and I have noticed an increase in shed and garage burglaries. Pedal cycles continue to be targeted and an increasing number of these are being stolen from sheds. The demand for and use of electrically assisted pedal cycles is growing and these can be expensive, even the basic machine can cost a few hundred pounds. Reports of these machines being stolen are appearing on local crime figures. If you have purchased any type of pedal cycle at Christmas for yourself or as a present for someone else, don’t let it be stolen from a shed. Sheds are by design not a secure environment to store valuable property. If all else fails, thieves will remove a shed roof and steal property that way. Replace screws in hinges with clutch head or non-return screws. Add a couple of additional hinges to support the original hinges fitted. Fit a substantial padlock and reinforce that part of the door to which the lock is fitted with a sheet of 16-gauge sheet steel. Use a coach bolt to secure the padlock and hasp to the shed. Use a ground anchor and cable to secure your property inside the shed. Ensure the anchor is securely located in the ground and not simply fastened to the shed itself. If you do not enter the shed at night, why would you need a light inside? Usually, the only people going into sheds at night are thieves. Consider fitting an alarm; Battery operated alarms are not expensive and can be quite effective. JNE Security manufacture a battery-operated portable alarm that sends a signal to a receiver up to 200 metres away or a text message to a mobile phone. Both are simple methods of alerting a householder that someone has entered their shed or other outbuilding. The devices are cheap and further information can be found at http://personalalarms.com/acatalog/shed-alarms.html Burglary prevention advice is available on the South Yorkshire police website at http://www.southyorkshire.police.uk/sites/default/files/4-9-14%20Janes%20approved% 20artwork.pdf If you have any questions you can contact Eamonn Larkin the Doncaster Police crime reduction officer via email eamonn.larkin@southyorkshire.police.uk

Haxey Hood, 2024 - WHAT A TURNOUT! The ancient tradition of Haxey Hood welcomes in 2024, in style! It would be hard to imagine that Lady Mowbray could have envisaged hundreds of revellers roaming across the "Haxey Hood field", ready to "wage war" (in an entirely well organised, and fabulously friendly manner), those some 655 years ago, having lost her hood whilst out riding! Never the less, they just did! The annual Haxey Hood tradition/ challenge/ festivities took place on Saturday, January 6th 2024. The pubs filled from the early morning. The streets, and fields filled from 3pm, and the Lord, Fool and Boggins led the festivities with fabulous flair, as always, beginning with the Fool’s traditional (and humorous!) welcome. A unified cry of "Hoose agen hoose, toon agen toon, If a man meets a man, knock 'im doon - but doan't 'ot 'im!" began the games! The majority of the revellers then headed towards the "Haxey Hood field" between Haxey and Westwoodside (although a fair number used the mass exodus from the street, and pubs, as a valid excuse to head back into the pubs to top up those empty pint glasses whilst the going was good and the pubs, at least ever such a little, emptier!) The games commenced on the traditional field, beginning with the kids’ retrieving the sack hoods (all for their well-earned £3 each, obviously!) and then onto the Sway! This year the Sway, whilst Westwoodside gave it a valiant go, were rather overpowered by Haxey's supporters, headed straight along to Haxey and made its way to The Duke and The Loco... then very forcibly and quickly went past the two pubs and headed straight down to its residence for 2024, the winner of the 2024 Haxey Hood games - The Kings’ Arms. Well done to one all for a fantastic Haxey Hood. Particular mention and thanks must obviously be made to The Lord, The Fool, The Boggins and all the fabulous supporters who helped prepare and clean up the entire area. 1st Isle of Axholme BP Scouts January 2024 Happy New Year! We celebrated Christmas in style in December, with crafts, parties and festive baking. We meet in Westwoodside Village Hall for our activity nights and so a team of scouts joined the hall committee to help decorate the Christmas trees inside the hall, and to string lights and tinsel to make the hall festive for all the users. Well done Scouts! Our scout sessions focused on passing our Signaller badge (morse code and NATO phonetic alphabet) and then we turned our attention to Advent. We enjoyed a craft evening making Christmas cards and wooden puppets, plus decorating cookies. The cubs have enjoyed a fun-filled December which has included the investiture of 6 new cubs and one new leader! We then enjoyed an evening of shelter making, fire lighting and knife safety which the cubs enjoyed immensely. We then also switched our focus to Advent. We welcomed Sarah-Jayne for the evening (one of the cub parents) for some festive baking, it's amazing how much you can fit into 90 minutes! We baked and decorated 3 cupcakes each, all with a different theme. For our final session of the year, the Scouts and Cubs shared an evening at Doncaster Bowl, something they chose as their “Christmas Party”. They had had great fun whilst also adding some friendly competitive spirit! Beavers section restart - please get in touch if your child (aged 5-8 years) would like to join us this Term. Sections all meet at the Westwoodside Village Hall: (Cubs, Scouts and Senior Scouts) meeting on Monday evenings 6pm (Cubs), and 7pm (Scouts & Senior Scouts), and Beavers (tbc) probably on a Tuesday evening at 6pm (from September). Remember, we are still looking to recruit more Beavers leaders/ helpers for this section. Please get in touch if this is something you would like to do.
All enquiries about Scouts or Beavers should go to Gregor on: gagibb79@aol.com, 22 Please mention “The Arrow” when responding to advertisements and Cub enquiries should go to Ma hieu at: ma hieu_maloigne@mentor.com.
'Parkrun is a free community event where you can walk, jog, run, volunteer or spectate over a 5k course. Parkrun is positive, welcoming and inclusive, there is no time limit, and no one finishes last. Everyone is welcome to come along.' The parkrun is held every Saturday morning at 09:00. We held our inaugural event last July which was attended by 97 runners and all was very well enjoyed by all. "Following a longstanding invite to visit our good friend and one of North Lincolnshire’s finest, Mr Jonnie Armstrong, it was a fortunate coincidence that meant we were able to join Jonnie for the inaugural Epworth Equestrian parkrun. The weather gods were kind, and despite some foreboding clouds the rain held off and upon arrival we were directed into the large car parking area adjacent the café. As well as a large car park, toilets were available, and I’ve been reliably informed that shower facilities are also available at a small charge. The start line is a short walk across the access lane from the car park, and it was here we gathered in a decent sized and manageable crowd of 97 parkrunners for the run briefing delivered expertly by Run Director Adrian Tuplin. On top of what you’d normally expect to hear in a run briefing, with it being the inaugural event, it was really good to hear the thanks and appreciation given to those who have put in the time, effort, and in some cases money into getting Epworth Equestrian parkrun up and running. Whether that be the core team of volunteers, the landowner, the local council or the generous sponsors, it really came across as a heartfelt thank you. Coming from South Wales the first thing I appreciated was the flatness of the Isle of Axholme, and Epworth Equestrian doesn’t disappoint on this level. It is a flat, out and back course, with a double loop of one of the equestrian fields, ran almost entirely on grass. The route will take a little bit of time to settle down underfoot, so until then I’d recommend trail trainers and keeping an eye out for bits of uneven ground and rabbit holes. For a flat profile, it’s a challenging course, the views are stunning, the horse jumps in the field give you something to take your mind off your burning legs and lungs, and the all the marshals dotted around the course were super encouraging. A special shout out needs to go to the young marshal with the air horn, well played young’un. The 97 runners were led home by Andrew Hamblen in a fantastic time of 19:18, followed by Andy Irvine in 20:42 and Jonathan Maxfield in 21:09. First female to finish was Lynn Temperton in 25:59, followed by Tracy Tuplin in 26:52 and Charlotte Jackson in 27:30. The top 3 age grade runners being Lynn with 76.84%, Andy with 73.59% and Denis John Elliott with 72.88%. Hats off to you all on incredible times and age grades on this challenging course. A special shout out must also go to Jacky Shelley, who not only tail walked, but did so dressed as an inflatable horse. Kudos Jacky, kudos! All in all, a fantastically well organised event, which the volunteers managed as if it were their 100th not their 1st. Thank you on behalf of all the runners, joggers, shufflers and walkers, you did yourselves proud. Which brings me on to my last, but most important shout out for the day, without whom parkrun couldn’t exist, namely the volunteers. Epworth Equestrian you were awesome, I hope to visit you again sometime soon." I hope that gives you a flavour of the Parkrun community and if you would like any further information please feel free to contact myself on 07889423511 or epworthequestrian@parkrun.com.
