Christingle-Making at St Martin’s C of E Primary School Following on from Paul Taylor leading an inspirational Christingle worship at St Martin’s C of E Primary School on Friday 26th November, a number of pupils had the opportunity to create their own Christingles, remembering that ‘Jesus is the Light of the World’ and that we all have a light to shine, to make a difference to others and to ourselves. The children learned all about the symbolism of the Christingle, as well as enjoying the range of sweets that were available to use! The pupils were also looking forward to attending the Christingle Service that was set for Advent Sunday at 4pm, St Martin’s Church. As we progress through this season of Advent and towards the end of this term,
St Martin’s school would like to wish everyone a very Happy Christmas and a peaceful New Year.

Epworth Music Day 2022 – Saturday 18th June
After a two year gap owing to Covid, we’re planning to hold Epworth Music Day as a ‘live’ event again on 18th June 2022. We’re hoping to use the same locations as in 2019, but are also applying to close the roads in the centre of Epworth to provide a safer place to enjoy the music. If you want to perform at Music Day, please email me at peter.barnard@me.com We already have several performers on the list, and it’ll be a case of ‘first come, first served’! John Lambert looks after the stewards for the day and tells me that he is looking for some more people to help out. You don’t have to be a steward for the whole day – an hour or two would be as welcome. If you can help, please email John at jrlambert@doctors.org.uk So, please put the date in your diary and tell your friends! It should be a great day of live music in Epworth! peter.barnard@me.com

The Apple of Your Isle – Celebrating Apples 2022 – Epworth Open Fruit Gardens The Apple of Your Isle has organised several successful Apple events in Epworth, as well as apple pressing days in Epworth, Haxey, Crowle and Ealand. It all serves to promote the fun to be had from growing apple trees and using their produce. In 2022, we’re planning to hold two events in Epworth to celebrate apple trees. The first one will be in April/May and the other in September/ October. The Open Gardens Scheme operates to let people visit interesting gardens and donate to a local charity. Epworth gardens have been part of such an event. We’re planning to set up something similar but with apple trees as the focus. The April/ May event will be when they are looking beautiful in their blossom and the September/October one when the fruit is ripening.
14
At this stage of planning, we’re looking for some owners of apple trees – it could also feature other fruit trees – in Epworth who would be prepared to open their garden for a morning/afternoon and let people visit. I’m planning to open our garden for the event. If you’re prepared to be part of this, please contact me on peter.barnard@me.com or 01427 873937. I do hope that we can find enough gardens in Epworth that can open. Peter Barnard
On Thursday January 5th at 7.30pm the Isle Group of the Lincolnshire Wildlife Trust will hold their monthly meeting. This month we are welcoming Simon Wellock who will be taking us on a tour around Far Ings NNR at Barton, explaining the management work that has been taking place over recent years and the benefits this has had on the wildlife which can be seen there. Far Ings is a large wetland reserve on the banks of the Humber which attracts many birds including the very rare Bittern. Simon is the reserve manager and he will be explaining what has been done and showing us photographs of the reserve and the wildlife to be found there. Again we are meeting in the more spacious venue, Belton All Saints Centre (Church Hall) which is next to the Church on Stocks Hill off the High Street. The committee will do everything they can to make sure we have an enjoyable and safe meeting. Everyone is welcome, you don't have to be a member of the Wildlife Trust so please come along and join us. Entrance fee is £1. For further information about the local Trust group and their meetings please contact Tony Lee on 01427 753831 or Chris Trinder on 01427 872051. Details about the group are also on the Lincolnshire Trust web site under area groups.

The first half term at John Leggott College One of a parent’s most important things is to make sure that their child is settling into their new school or college. So, I know that this article is going to be useful to many looking into applying to John Leggott College in the future. I am a first year student here at JLC and it’s been a great step up from secondary school. Since I didn’t get to attend any open days for colleges, due to Covid-19, I would look at reviews online and see what people had to say about their personal experiences here. Coming from a student themselves, John Leggott College has been incredibly supportive in making me and other students feel safe and comfortable in their environment. For many, including me, change is a very touchy subject which requires some adjustment. Even though everyone always says that ‘you’re never alone’, going somewhere new at such a young age may make you think the opposite. Now, I don’t want to sound clichéd, but you truly are never alone when in this college environment. Personally, the first week of college was harder than I thought it would’ve been; I didn’t feel like I was settling in as much as everyone else. However, during only my first week, I already knew who to contact and have had constant support from teachers, wellbeing and peers; this support has continued on ever since and I now feel remarkably safe and secure. So, feeling a little bit scared at times is nothing to worry about. It just means that you're embarking on something new and exciting. Without John Leggott College I would never have got to join extended opportunities, which could be things such as debate team and journalism, and courses that weren’t accessible to me before. Which you may say is boring, but I find it all very exciting and who knows, you might too. Obviously, the main reason you or your child is going to college is to sit the courses. Now, I won’t lie and say that the change from secondary school to college is small and slow paced as it unquestionably is not. It can be quite fast- paced and stressful at times, but it’s definitely something to consider going into if you’re looking into higher education, such as university. Although it’s fast paced and stressful, it’s also a fun experience and the freedom involved is a vast improvement from what I have previously experienced. Something I desperately wanted in secondary school was to be treated like an adult and let me just say, John Leggott staff put an immense amount of trust into the students and treat them like the adults they are turning into. Treating students the way that many of us have wanted to be treated for a long time makes students mature. For example, since my time at this college, I have witnessed no falling out with friends and no spats in the corridors, mostly because coming to John Leggott is a choice. So, just remember everyone there has chosen to be there and I hope that one day you do too. If you do decide to join John Leggott College everyone, even students in the year above, are rooting for your success. Maisie Lister, Journalism Internship student
