VIRTUAL BALLOON RACE RAISES OVER £3,500 FOR AIR AMBULANCES

As part of fundraising activities for the 3 air ambulances operating across their area (Yorkshire; Great North; and Lincolnshire & Nottinghamshire), the North East England Trefoil Guild region have raised over £3,500 from a virtual balloon race. The balloon race was supported by individuals from all parts of England and the worthy winner had participated “because a friend had owed his life to a ride in the helicopter from Cumbria to Newcastle”. Girlguiding Units across the Region from Rainbows (aged 5) to Trefoil Guild (aged 18+) are also working towards an Air Ambulance Challenge for which, when completed, they will receive a badge. The challenge comprises 3 Sections: Flight and Science Navigation and Communication First Aid and Safety Plus one fund-raising activity for the Air Ambulance It is hoped with this and other fund raising initiatives to raise a sizeable sum to help maintain this valuable service.

Doncaster Rambler’s Press Release – A Local walk from Epworth Today’s walk, if anything, was about people. And it started as soon as a two or three gathered in the car park outside Holme & Garden Centre Epworth. In the bright sunshine spontaneous chatter began and continued throughout this 3 hour ramble. It was a joy to witness as more and more gathered, some new faces, some returners, even some from other clubs, all breaking out in lively conversation. It was almost impossible to break in with our usual Covid announcement! Eventually that done fourteen set off on our six and half mile walk to the west of Epworth. There was definitely a heightened level of excitement as most had not been in this area before, and many were now used to this Friday morning jaunt by Doncaster Ramblers. The route took us east a short distance passing St Andrews Church whose Rector The Rev Samuel Wesley was father to John and Charles Wesley, indeed Epworth is know as “The Home of Methodism” Turning south along the Peatland Way, which runs along the edge of the village then out into open country. At times it felt like being below sea level well only a foot or two above anyway, as the sandy soil was reminiscent to walking on the beach. Now heading west we made our way towards Epworth Turbary Nature Reserve, via a disused railway tunnel, and several field edges. All the while conversation were going on in the background.

Reaching the Nature Reserve we stopped for a short coffee and snack break on a patch of grass allowing some social distancing. Suitably fortified the return journey took us passed a series of fields containing pigs, lots of pigs, some inquisitive enough to venture over. Though unlike cows and horses, no-one attempted petting these porkers. Mind you there was an electric fence keeping us apart. Moving on now eastwards following the Ingham Drain to reach the norther outskirts of Epworth. The journey not yet over we rose to the 50ft highpoint of our walk now back on the Peatland Way to view two magnificent former windmills (used maybe by Dutchman Sir Cornelius Vermuyden to drain the area). The walk ended with a dreamy march through a narrow avenue of trees back to the Garden Centre. Rules continue to change regarding outdoor exercise and group activity so please visit our website https://www.doncasterramblers.org.uk/ for latest, including future activity. Also follow us on Facebook https://www.facebook.com/ doncasterramblers/ for details of past Rambler outings. Remember while out observe social distancing, carry a mask, hand sanitiser, and gloves. Obey the Countryside Code and give way to other walkers.

CHILDREN’S BEREAVEMENT BOOK FEATURES THAILAND ADVENTURES Hugo and Daddy’s Thailand Adventures is a sequel to the first book written by Misterton author, Ric Hart, Hugo and Daddy’s Night-time Adventures. In the new publication, Hugo wakes up one morning ready for a trip of a lifetime with Daddy. Ric (pictured with the new book) explains: “The creation of this book was so much fun, working with my illustrator Jackie Tee, it was an adventure in itself for us, but also a very emotional journey. So I can’t wait for Hugo to read it, and look forward to what will be going forward. “This children’s adventure book came to mind simply because Jade (Mummy) and I got married in Thailand in April 2015, and travelled to many special places during our month away, and also hit some other very special islands in 2016 together. This was where Jade found her special place, Koh Lipe. “The book shares the journey we both took where Daddy shows Hugo all these special places with lots of special meaning. So one day we can both go backpacking to Thailand and relive some amazing moments for Hugo to experience. Daddy just can’t wait for this trip with Hugo!” Jade died in 2018 after the birth of Hugo. Ric Hart took to writing to help come to terms with his loss, and to give Hugo a lasting legacy of his mother. Again, this book will be going to a charity called The Children’s Bereavement Centre, based in Newark, Nottinghamshire. The choice of charity ties in nicely with Hugo’s adventure book and his loss. It is available from 24 June from Amazon – copies can be preordered - and other leading booksellers. This is Ric’s second children’s bereavement book; a third, Hugo and Daddy’s Superhero Adventures comes out August time alongside a Christmas book in the making. Ric has also written an autobiography, Pupy Love.

What sad news for those that want to travel. Sadly we have no movement yet on any more countries we can travel to for holidays (of course you can travel to some if you are happy to quarantine on return and pay for additional testing). It looks like we are going to have to make use of the UK and all it has to offer (and that is lots) for Summer 2021. We have to watch and wait for travel updates. Cruising from UK ports and to UK destinations began and has been a real HIT. These ships are amazing have so much to offer on board, have you ever thought about cruising? Call me to chat over, there are so so many brands and style of cruising, from large to small ships to sailing ships and yachts, it is all available for you. Additionally in the UK we have an abundance of holiday parks, cottages and lodges, along with the Norfolk Broads, canal boats and fabulous hotel stays. There is so much to see and do, right here and I think we are going to have to appreciate the UK holiday a little more this year. Be ready to travel, download the NHS App in readiness as this is going to be the way to show and prove your vaccination status for travel in the future or alternatively seek a letter by calling 119 when you have had both vaccines. Holidays are still being booked and planned and I am booking many clients for Winter 202, Summer 2022 and into Summer 2023 with cruising and some Tour Operators. Please do head to my page on Facebook www.facebook.com/luanthornhillathaystravel to keep up to date with travel news or give me a call on 01427 333013 Luan Thornhill @ Hays Travel Details correct on 14.6.21
