The Isle of Axholme Family History Society held their annual general meeting at the end of April. The Chairman, Nick Nothard in his report stressed the need for new Committee members to see the Society into the future as at least top Committee members had made it plain that this was the last year they were prepared to hold office. Several F.H.S. had folded in the last few years due to the lack of Committee members. He thanked the committee and others for their support.
The main officers Chairman, Secretary and Treasurer were re-elected as was the old Committee with the addition of a new member, Brian Watkins. After the official meeting had closed members were free to do their own research or make a purchase from a book sale. Later a fine supper was enjoyed by all.

News, News, News, News, News, News, News... Epworth Men’s Society will never be the same again – following the organisation’s latest AGM.
With the election of officers, under the new rule, Stuart Taylor remains chairman for another year and Barry Briggs will continue as vice-chairman for the same period of time.
The Society has existed for more that 50 years but members decided to change their constitution when they met for their annual meeting at the town‟s Mowbray Arms pub.
Other positions went to: Roger Callum - minutes secretary, Dave Poulter - treasurer, press secretary - Eddie Mardell, speaker secretary - Ken Bickerstaff, social events secretary – George Williams and games secretary – Dave Hayes.
But the change is not earth-shattering - it simply means that whoever are elected chairman and vicechairman will now serve for a period of two years rather than just for 12-months. In proposing the change, John Needham pointed out that being appointed chairman was an honour in recognition of service given to the Society. “But by the time they have picked up the ropes and become acquainted with the role their term is over. It would be far better if the chairman and vice chairman both served for a period of two years,” he stressed. It was eventually agreed that the second year in office would be subject to agreement by the Society‟s committee that members wanted the individual to serve for a second year and that the incumbent of the post also wanted to continue. The meeting, which had been preceded with a meal, also saw the presentation of trophies won at a games night held earlier in the year.
Anyone wanting further information of the Men’s Society is asked to call Ken Bickerstaff on 01427 872288.
A ‘Time Team’ has been called in to attempt unravel a 300-year-old mystery at one of North Lincolnshire’s highly popular tourist attractions – the Old Rectory Museum in Epworth. For an archaeological survey is about to get underway in an attempt to discover if there are any remains of the previous rectory – destroyed by a fire in 1709. “We proposed to dig several trenches at key points in our grounds in order to find out if there are any remains of the previous buildings that stood on the site when the Wesleys lived there,” said Rev Claire Potter, curator at the Old Rectory.

News, News, News, News, News, News, News... The work gets underway on Monday, May 10, and is expected to last for up to two weeks. Leaflets explaining what is taking place have been sent to people living close to the Old Rectory and the museum‟s car park will be temporarily closed. The excavation work is to be carried out by specialist company Preconstruct Archaeological Services, which is based at Saxelby, near Lincoln.
The money is need in order to allow the Old Rectory to take out contracts with specialists in a series of fields - including those working on historic interiors and structural engineers. Their reports will help progress plans for a purpose-built visitors‟ centre, to house a museum shop, café and other facilities. There will also be improved parking.
The company‟s senior manager, Will Munford, said that earlier geophysical survey work had revealed a number of anomalies below the surface and that some of the exploration trenches would be targeting them. “Our work will be to assess the impact of the proposed planning decision. We hope to discover artefacts and the remains of outbuildings relating to the first rectory,” he said. Meanwhile the Old Rectory has submitted its round one bid to the Heritage Lottery Fund and the result of the application for financial help will be known in July.

News, News, News, News, News, News, News... The smartest designer children’s wear shop, bar none! Smartest, Baa None! was only launched in Fountain Court, Epworth a month ago but is already making quite a name for itself as one of a smartest and most fun places to shop in the Isle. Proprietor Jane Keightley is clearly delighted by the impact Smartest, Baa None! has made since she opened its doors on 1 May: „‟I always thought there was a gap in the market for a designer children‟s wear shop in Epworth and felt it was important to make it a refreshingly different shopping experience. By bringing together some of the best names in children‟s fashion in an exciting environment, I seem to have found the right formula. Customers are loving the ranges on offer and seem to appreciate the level of service. The good news is that many lines are selling so well that I‟m already re-ordering for Spring/Summer having secured the best designs for next season.‟‟ Timberland‟s Autumn/Winter stock arrives in store towards the end of the month closely followed by Catamini, Bèbè, Joules and no added sugar. Jane is also planning to take to the road over the summer months with stands displaying the Smartest, Baa None! range at popular events such as local shows, fun days and baby/toddler groups. If you know of any event which may be suitable for Smartest, Baa None! or would like to arrange a designer children‟s wear party at your home for your friends please call Jane on 01427 875 975.
AVID - or Awaken Village Interest in Dance to use its full title - has been organising informal folk dances - or barn dances or ceilidhs - in the isle since 1999. These dances are held in village halls in different villages on the evening of the second Wednesday of each month. They are designed to be informal, with no prior knowledge of the dances required. Live music is provided and there is expert tuition for the dances. Peter Barnard has been helping to put on these dances since 1993 and says “we have held some fantastic evenings. We never know who is going to turn up. We don‟t book a band or a caller - we just see who is there. Yet we have never had to cancel a dance for lack of musicians or callers. Because the dances are informal we are able to cater for dancers of all ages and ability levels. And at £1 entry it is a snip!” AVID has its own website - www.aviddance.co.uk where you can see the location for the next dances. Just watch as no dances are held in July and August because of the school holidays. So, why not get your dancing shoes out or dust down that violin and come along. You will be made to feel very welcome. If you would like more details, please contact Peter Barnard on 01427 873937. The next dance is on June 9th at the Coronation Hall, Owston Ferry.

REPORT FROM EPWORTH & DISTRICT FLOWER CLUB – MAY MEETING. The Flower Club has a friendship with St. Lawrence‟s Flower Circle, Scunthorpe, which goes back a fair few years now. They were invited to the May meeting , along with friends of members and other visitors, to see a demonstration by Rosalind Walker from Driffield, affectionately known as” Auntie Ros, ”because our treasurer is her relation. What a treat we all had! We had an evening of wonderful flower arranging, fun and laughter, when Ros created a striking display, entitled “Spring into Summer” . The title did not reflect the weather outside, it being a bitter cold night, with severe frost forecast, but inside Haxey Memorial Hall, we had our spirits lifted with Rosalinds designs. She worked on five, mainly traditional arrangements, using five very designer containers. Bringing from her boxes, beautiful pieces of fresh plant material from her garden, one after the other, blossom, dogwood, witch elm, silver birch, red robin, Solomon‟s seal, and skilfully arranging them as background for heavenly flowers, such as, roses, gerberas, carnations, stocks, hellebores, the list could go on, and using the last of the tulips as spring steps into summer. The stage, at the end of the show, was a stunning presentation of colourful arrangements, created whilst keeping us entertained with chit-chat , anecdotes and rhymes. Coffee, tea and cakes were served, adding to making it a very enjoyable evening. Thanks to everyone who helped with, and provided refreshments. The next meeting is on June 14th2010, when Sue Hoy, Head Gardener, Normanby Hall, will give a talk entitled “Wind, Friend or Foe”. This meeting will be in the Stephen Jones Community Hall, Haxey and will commence at 7.30pm.

Flowers for Someone Special Do you know someone special? Someone who has gone the extra mile for others or someone who just deserves something nice.
The Arrow has a special nomination this month for a special lady, Marjorie Trimingham from Epworth. Marjorie is the oldest lady I know. We have over recent
years spent a lot of time together reminiscing. I thank you for your kindness, your conversation and your company. Together we covered lots of information on Epworth and the Isle. Because we met, you were able to introduce me to many other older Epworth Residents who were able to talk of the past 'their good times' when they were young too. It was largely your inspiration that set me on the road to create the history articles for the Arrow magazines. Thank you Marjorie, I send my sincere very best wishes for everything and may you continue to have a happy and peaceful life in you delightful new home. Thank you. We were very interested to see the article ‘Now & Then, No.13’ by Anthony Catherall in Issue 15 of the Epworth and Belton Arrow. We have lived in the Old Courthouse in Hollingsworth Lane for about 12 years now and were the first residents after it ceased being used as a Petty Sessions court. We have searched over the years for photographs showing the original left hand wing of the property which was, we understand, destroyed in a fire and was replaced by a smaller structure approx 20-25 years ago. We would be very interested to see a photo front view of the house before it was remodelled if anyone has any. The original Deeds from 1848 itself is a very interesting historical document. Your photo from issue 15 seems to show that the left wing was larger and taller than the right (courtroom) side although the plans we have seen suggests that the house was intended to be symmetrical. You might be interested to hear that the two cells on the upper floor, including the heavy original cell doors with peep-holes etc., are still in place (see photograph) although one of the vaulted ceilings has had to be taken down. As the ground floor is much larger than the upper (cell) floor, we basically live on one floor a little like a bungalow but as you can imagine it is a lovely spacious home with about 13-14 foot ceilings in places! The main courtroom remains on two levels with the original parquet flooring retained on the lower area which would have been where the public were seated. The proprietor I would like to thank the proprietor of the Old Courthouse for getting in touch with the Arrow. As we have published the contents, you have qualified for a £10 voucher to spend at
Jonathan David of High Street Epworth. Enjoy your experience!

The Isle of Axholme
Where You Live
Your Local History
Adapted by Anthony Catherall
THE NORMANS continued Justices under the Mowbray’s was in the shape of the Manor Court. It settled disputes between tenants. It had the power to try offending tenants and to condemn to death for theft. The Manor Court remained in operation long after the Mowbray’s. The counties of England were divided up by the King amongst his followers in return for armed service in time of war. The counties were divided up into Hundreds, and Hundreds divided into Manors. One hundred Manors made up a Hundred. The Manor land was divided up into the domain (Lord’s Land) and the villeins land. The villeins, as rent, had to plough four acres for the Lord and supply two oxen for the Lord for seven days a year and work three days a week on the lord’s land. He must follow the Lord to war and sit on his court of justice. He also had rights. He could not be ejected from his land as long as he performed his duties. These Villeins were called copyholders because they had their conditions of land tenure written down and they had a copy. Cottars held small parcels of land in return for a certain rent. Porcarii were free occupiers who rented the privilege of feeding pigs for payment. Servi had few rights and were almost slaves. Most of these social classes were set up in Saxon times and carried over into Norman times. The manor lands were divided up into three large fields. One was left fallow each year. The crops sowed on the others included wheat, hemp and flax. The whole village ploughed, sowed and reaped together each field. Despite this, the fields were divided into strips between the various tenants to ensure that no one hot all the poor land or all the good land. There were common fields for grazing. According to the Doomsday Book, Epworth Manor had sixteen acres of common meadowland and one square mile of woodland. In addition, the Epworth tenants had the deed of John de Mowbray that granted free use of the waste lands in the west of the parish. In 1795 an act of parliament was obtained to enclose the commons of Owston Ferry, Haxey, Belton and Epworth. There was a great deal of haggling about the division of the lands. The locals resisted the enclosure of the arable lands that of course, are still to some extent in strips in certain parts of Epworth and Haxey parishes. South Engine Drain and the Bridge Inn Belton circa 1920’s courtesy of Albert Morris. Mr Glew, of Green Lane Belton left at front of the punt and his colleagues performing the continuous task of removing weeds and plant growth in the drain. The ‘Bridge Inn’ above catering for the needs of Belton people were supplied by brewers Warwick and Richardson. In late 1960 or early 1961 Raymond and Kitty Howarth served he last pint from the cellar at the pub. The Brick road bridge was later demolished and replaced by one below that traverses both this drain and the river Torne. Albert Morris worked for the Severn Trent authority for 29 years clearing the drain with his excavator. Looking at the picture below taken in March 2010 one concludes that these tasks are not performed today.

Epworth Primary School News Letter Kingswood Residential Our Year 4 children spent a very enjoyable 3 days at a Kingswood Activity Centre at Peniston in the Peak District. The children took part in all kinds of adventurous activities including climbing, archery, quad biking and making a leap of faith (attached to a rope of course). The children learnt to attempt something new and challenging and even the staff joined in! The children gain so much from such residential experiences. As a school we firmly believe that children need these sort of experiences to broaden the curriculum and promote learning outside the classroom. Friends of Epworth Summer Fair Our F.O.E.‟s fundraising group of parents is planning our annual Summer Fair on Friday 25 th June after school at 3:15pm. This is our biggest fundraising event of the year – last year we raised £2000 to go towards the Trim Trail for the children to use. This included a Summer raffle with over 20 prizes all donated by local businesses and family attractions. This year we are raising funds for Basketball posts for our Junior playground, new books for the Infants and new equipment for the Reception children. Our target is to raise £6000! We hope lots of you will be able to join us at our Summer Fair to help make it our best ever! Litter Sweep Members of the School Gardening club recently had a litter clean up of the path near our school and the school grounds. The children filled 3 sackfuls of rubbish. The children had the Litter sweep after learning about the effects of litter on our environment. Well done children for your hard work. Lets make sure we all play our part in keeping our community litter free. Now the children are continuing to improve the school environment by tidying our sensory garden and planting vegetables and flowers.
Best wishes John Hodgkins Headteacher

Launched in 1982 by the French Ministry for culture, the Fête de la Musique is held in more than hundred countries in Europe and over the world. It takes place every 21st June, the day of the summer solstice in the northern hemisphere. All kinds of music / A large audience Completely different from a music festival, the Fête de la Musique is above all a free popular fête (or festival in English), open to any participant (amateur or professional musicians) who want to perform in it. This Music Day allows the expression of all styles of music in a cheerful atmosphere. It aims at a large audience, working to popularise musical practice for young and not so young people from all social backgrounds. A free and popular event Musicians are asked to perform for free and all the concerts are free for the public. On this day they play in open air areas, such as streets and parks or in public buildings like museums, churches, halls etc. Furthermore, the Fête de la Musique is a way to encourage the major music institutions (orchestras, operas, choirs, bands etc.) to perform outside their usual locations. In this way the day offers an opportunity to develop exchanges between musicians of different musical genres and to offer concerts in a variety of locations, many of which do not normally host them. Most of all, it offers music in the open air. Finally it gives amateur and professional musicians a chance to play together in the same arena. Fête de la Musique in the Isle of Axholme

Last year the Fête fell on a Sunday and it was celebrated in the afternoon at various places in the Epworth. Sticking with the tradition of always holding it on the 21st, this year it will fall on Monday 21st June. A number of musicians and singers have already expressed an interest in playing at some point in the day and evening. If you would like to play or sing - in whatever style - please contact Keith on 01427 873915 or Peter Barnard on 01427 873937 for more details. Or just turn up anywhere in the village and perform. This is a great and free way to make Epworth really buzz on the solstice day and for people to have free entertainment. Now why wasn‟t that in any manifesto?

I don‟t know what you know about your heart, but after the last election
Vince Cable has emphatically asserted that his heart beats on the left. Not a statement of human biology (though that might be an accurate statement biologically), but a statement of his political views, for he is left of centre. Most people have been surprised at the changes that the general election has caused to happen. Former enemies have become colleagues, and many words that were spoken in the heat of political campaigning have had to be forgotten. Well they would perhaps have been forgotten but for interviewers and political correspondents reminding Mr Cameron and Mr Clegg what they have formerly said about each other. Some see this as a sign of double talking, others as a sign of openness. The political realities have changed. In our own experience we know what such change is, and the difficulty of bringing together formerly irreconcilable sides. In South Africa it took a Truth and Reconciliation Committee, in Northern Island many still feel uncomfortable at alleged IRA and Orange terrorists working together. Christianity is about God reconciling mankind to himself through Jesus Christ so that we may be one with each other and one in Him. And all this because of love, in particular the heartbeat of Gods love for the world. Whether our hearts beat on the right or left (as it were) they are called to beat to the rhythm of God‟s forgiveness.

Forecasting a Hot British Summer This Year? Vitamin D is essential for our health, so how do we ensure we have enough? It is important to expose our bodies to the sun without burning. Remember to
Spend time in the shade between 11am and 3pm Make sure you never burn Aim to cover up with T shirt, hat and sunglasses Remember to take extra care with children, using factor 15 sunscreen
Indoor tanning facilities offer a viable alternative to natural sunshine, if they are used correctly! Sunburn can double your risk of skin cancer

Now the dust has settled The General Election is over. We, the British people have spoken. We don‟t like any party enough to give them an absolute majority. The Tory/Lib Dem coalition has caused even more bad emotion because of those who think the wrong deal has been done. Our next General election should be on the first Thursday in May 2015, less than 60 months away. But for those who do not back the coalition and for those who voted Labour or for any of the smaller parties, it‟s 59 months too far away. What should we do? In the Bible, the apostle Paul writes to Timothy. “I urge that petitions, prayers, requests and thanksgivings be offered to God for all people, for kings and all others in authority.” It will be easier for some to pray for the new Government than for others. However Paul urges all of us, regardless of political persuasion, to pray. He doesn‟t stop at rulers in the UK. When we pray for President Barak Obama of the USA, we should also pray, just as fervently, for the much loathed President Robert Mugabe of Zimbabwe. Yes, we are to sit in the presence of God and bring all the rulers of the world, good and bad, to God to pray for them. This really pleases God.

Wrooted were formed for a one off charity gig 13 years ago, we had a great first gig & decided to repeat the performance. Back then we were a trio, and since the entire band came from Wroot, we were named Wrooted! Wrooted are a 5 piece, all live, upbeat party band (no backing tracks) and our music ranges from The Stones and Beatles though to the Kaiser chiefs, Killers and even the Proclaimers are thrown in for a bit of fun! By 2001 word had spread locally about Wrooted and as they grew to a 5 piece band they started to work the club circuit around Yorkshire and Lincolnshire. Wrooted have played lots of events including weddings, corporate events , festivals, biker rallys and charity events. Our clients include South Yorkshire Police, Royal Bank of Scotland, Doncaster Chamber of Commerce, St Leger Harley Davidson, Doncaster golf club to name just a few. The venues have been great too; The Royal Armouries at Leeds, Keepmoat Stadium, Doncaster Race Course, Doncaster Dome and various hotels around the UK, even someone‟s back garden. The band consists of: Nick Webb lead vocal / guitar, Darren Walker vocal rhythm / lead guitar, Phil Johns lead guitar, Steve Brown bass guitar, Phil Brown drums & Ady Viles sound & lighting. We have a great PA and lighting to suit most venues and carry full public liability insurance and P.A.T. tests. If you want a great band for a great occasion, give us a call on
07815436656 or become a fan on Facebook (just look under Wrooted!) I can certainly vouch for Wrooted! Attending a friends wedding in April, Wrooted were the entertainment of the night! Live music, what more can I say. I would definitely recommend the group to make your event special! Carolyn (Editor)

The past few months have flown bye and so much has happened on the farm. At the beginning of
Ram lambs having breakfast in the snow
March the flock of sheep were split in to two groups – the earlier ewes to lamb and the late ones along with any that were going to have large multiple births, so we could keep a close eye on them. We then had the waiting game, checking regularly to make sure that none of them got stuck on their backs. During this lull before the storm we had a very pleasant visit from the local Beavers group, who had a tour of the cattle sheds and got to meet most of the cows and calves. They were already a very knowledgeable group of children, and hopefully they had an enjoyable experience and learnt a bit more information about the Dexter breed of cattle. At the end of March and the beginning of April most of the cows and claves were moved out to fresh grass, apart from a couple of cows who are currently with Larry, the bull. Ruby the cow who had the twin calves is also in side, having a bit of TLC as she is having to produce so much milk for her two rapidly growing calves. She will hopefully be going out at the end of the month, when the nights are a little warmer. The first of the lambs were born on Easter Sunday, and from then onwards, for the next 2 and a half weeks it was none stop. On our record day we had 8 sets of twins, 3 sets of triplets and a set of quads. We leave all lambs with their mums, apart from the quads where we have to take one off, as the ewes find it very hard to produce enough milk for 4 very hungry lambs. On the 12th April at 6am we had a mad dash to Portland House Vets in Retford, as a ewe who had earlier prolapsed started to lamb and needed a Caesarean section, as we were unable to lamb her naturally. To everyone‟s surprise including the vets she had two very healthy lambs. In total we had 258 lambs, a record year. A big thank you to everyone who came down and helped us with lambing, especially Westwoodside stores who kept us in supply of cardboard boxes for the slightly weaker lambs to snugly in on a hot water bottle, when the weather was wet and cold. Best wishes Jill Carr

Axholme, Doncaster TTL and Retford Camera Clubs met at Haxey Church Hall recently for the annual 3-way competition. Ralph Bennett of Newark was invited to judge. Entries from the clubs were mixed together, so there was no way to tell one from another. At the end of the evening the scores were incredibly close. Prints and digital images were submitted, with Axholme winning in the digital image section. The overall winner was Doncaster with 400 points, Axholme coming in second with 396 points. Retford were close on their heels with 394 points. Axholme members brought sweet and savoury snacks to provide a lovely buffet supper which was enjoyed by all. In a recent digital image competition held at Sheffield, 24 clubs from the area submitted entries, including Axholme Camera Club. The Judge had a hard time of it with around 125 entries to mark. Axholme did very well for a small country club, being placed joint 3rd. Once again Kevin Wells visited the club for a practical session with members. Camera settings can be a bit of a mystery to some, but Kevin was there to help and explain in his usual clear and friendly manner. It proved a useful evening. Open to anyone is an evening show of the North East and Midlands Photographic Exhibition on DVD. This is an opportunity to see many top quality exhibits from the best photographers in the area. The show takes place at Haxey Church Hall on Wednesday 16th June at 7.30pm. There will be a small door charge to include refreshments. All will be made very welcome. The rest of the year's programme to the summer break consists of competitions, photo opportunities locally and a Photoshop evening on June 30th. It is not too late to join in as a visitor, and a reduced membership fee operates if you wish to become a full member at this stage.

The Women’s Institute was started almost 70 years ago during the second world war, with the stated aim of assisting women of all ages to make the most of the facilities available to feed and clothe their families. Its obvious targets were education in the accepted norms for household skills, ie. cooking good nutritious dishes, both sweet and savoury, and sewing clothes and household soft furnishings. Its educational objectives remain as they were then, helping women to make the most of their lives. The traditional areas of home craft are still part of the central core with the addition of many leisure related topics, to suit the modern world. Formal courses, and informal learning, include topics such as painting, genealogy, photography, IT, personal development and crafts, plus anything that women themselves identify as a need. The WI even has its own college where it runs the formal courses, which also gives opportunities for we women to meet like minded individuals from all over the country. The WI is a national organisation, open to women of all ages. No-one is too young or too old to join in, and new members are always warmly welcomed. We are split into regions and areas with hundreds of smaller groups meeting together in many towns and villages throughout the nation as a whole. Our local group is the Epworth WI, of which I am just one of around 25 to 30 members. This current group is a reincarnation of a previous group which closed down some years ago, and has been active now for five years. We meet on the second Tuesday of the month, at the Red Lion Hotel in the market place, starting at 7-45pm. Our current membership comes from other villages apart from Epworth, and all are welcome. There are occasions when the meeting is held elsewhere, such as this month when we met at the Roseacre Nursery in Belton. We have a varied programme throughout the year, with any member being free to suggest topics of interest for inclusion in this. During the last month we have had success with our quiz team, who won the Isle heats of the area quiz with a resounding margin. They then went on to come second in the area finals, losing by only one point. A group of 18 members and friends spent an enjoyable evening at Hull New Theatre watching the stage version of the film Calendar Girls, which they said was an excellent production. The monthly meeting was held at Roseacre Nursery in Belton learning how to plant hanging baskets and tubs for the summer. After refreshments Gail gave a clear explanation and efficient demonstration of how to complete a hanging basket, and answered a barrage of questions about plants and gardening. All the members had taken along a basket or tub to practise on, and after choosing from the nursery‟s excellent selection of plants left with their efforts which, hopefully, will continue to adorn the walls and gardens throughout the entire summer. Next month’s meeting will be held at Jonathon David’s shop in Epworth on 8th June 7.45pm, where we will have a demonstration of cake decorating. For any further details please contact Cath Fordham 01427 874422

Dear Readers,
Five tips to prepare your car for summer After a long winter of wear and tear through snow, salt and potholes - and volcanic dust - your car will be in need of a little TLC. Being prepared for the summer and making checks now can save you a lot of money in the long run. Try to deal with any minor problems and repairs as they happen, as they can become very expensive if left to build up over time. Here are five tips to prepare your car: rusting if left on the bodywork. If possible take your car to a car wash that specializes in under-car cleaning to get rid of every trace. replacing your car‟s pollen filter annually is a vital investment. Keeping your air-con well maintained will help, too. -con will help your car smell better. If it smells stale when you turn the heating on, it could well be a sign that mould is building up in your condenser. windscreen and headlamps when you stop for fuel is also important as windscreen wipers won‟t get rid of all the fly debris. remember to replace them regularly. After the dust that has fallen from the volcanic ash cloud, it is particularly important that you clean them regularly to avoid damaging your windscreen. Certain checks should be made regardless of the season: Anti-freeze contains corrosion inhibitors so you should keep your car topped up with the right mixture all year round; going without could lead to expensive internal damage such as a blown head gasket.

Lindsey Lodge Hospice Sleepwalk Scunthorpe based Lindsey Lodge Hospice is hoping for a record turnout this year for its fourth Sleepwalk event on Friday July 9th at Glanford Park, home of Scunthorpe United FC. Sign up now for either a 6 mile of a 13 mile walk and get as much sponsorship money as possible. The last three walks have raised a total of over £260,000 for Lindsey Lodge which is a tremendous achievement. Head of Fundraising, Mel Banham said, “ Sleepwalk is a fantastic event that brings together hundreds of people, local organisations and businesses – all to raise the funds that Lindsey Lodge needs to keep providing its special care for people with life limiting conditions in the North Lincolnshire area. It costs over £3.50 every single minute to keep Lindsey Lodge running. We get limited support form the NHS so every single £1 raised is needed and valued. This year we're looking for 100 men who'll 'dare to wear pink'. Lot's of women have asked if partners, sons and dads can walk to help raise funds. So let's hear from you guys! This year we will be handing commemorative t-shirts to all walkers on the night, rather than training t-shirts beforehand. We can‟t thank people enough for getting involved. ” For more information visit the Sleepwalk website at www.lindseylodgesleepwalk.org.uk where you can download both the Application and Gift Aid forms. Complete them and return to Lindsey Lodge Hospice, Burringham Road, Scunthorpe, DN17 2AA with your registration fee of £15. You can also call 01724 843731 or email fundraising@lindseylodgehospice.org.uk to receive information.

News from Belton All Saints CoE Primary Sporting Events Pupils have continued to represent the school in a range of sporting events. Our newly formed Football Team came a fantastic second place in a recent Isle tournament just missing out by 1 point to winners Haxey Primary, they have gone on to win at home to St Martins Primary and have further matches arranged. Further successes have been had on the cross country track with pupils from Years 3, 4, 5 and 6 taking part in an Isle event held at South Axholme Community School. Congratulations to all who took part, especially Hannah, Jack and Alicia who won their year group races. Monster Attack! Monster mania has hit school with pupils from Years 3 and 4 designing and creating monsters of all shapes, sizes and colours. The monsters are being built as part of a design and technology project that will see the pupils investigating ways of creating movement in their models such as the use of pneumatics and hinges. Green Fingers Throughout school, pupils have been busy sowing flower and vegetable seeds. Nursery pupils were joined by parent Mr Lightburn, who helped them to plant potatoes. Runner beans, strawberries, tomatoes and lettuce are some of the other crops being sown and it is anticipated that some of the produce will be prepared and served for lunch. Pupils have also potted up donated plants for The Friends of the School Plant Sale. Five Star Award for School Kitchen My congratulations go to our School Cook, Mrs Orton, and her team who have recently been awarded the top award of Five Stars by North Lincolnshire‟s Food Hygiene Rating Scheme for the second time running. The award acknowledges the excellent service provided by the kitchen team in providing hot school meals to more than 120 pupils daily. CHATS – Church At School At school we have a close relationship with the All Saints Church community here in Belton. As a school we visit the Church several times a year to celebrate some of the key Church festivals, the school choir performs at the Christingle Services and the school joins the Church in supporting wider community groups such as „The Forge‟ in Scunthorpe. Six times a year the Church holds a Saturday morning activity session for pupils exploring Christian themes through games, activities and songs and once a term we welcome the All Saints Church community into school for their Sunday „CHATS‟ Service. This month the CHATS service took the theme of Ascension and Pentecost and members of the congregation were invited to write a prayer or a thought which were attached to a balloon, these were then released at the end of the service. The next CHATS service will be early in the Autumn Term and we would be very pleased to see you there; for more details please contact school or Rev Tim Buckley.
