Welcome to the March issue of the Epworth and Belton Arrow.

What a freezing February we have all endured and some great snowy days to enjoy. Whilst I can imagine most enjoyed the snowy weather, as we haven't had snow for some years, I hope our thoughts were with the elderly and vulnerable and gave them an helping hand if needed. If anyone has any snowy photos of either your biggest snowman or a scene on the Isle please email me carolyn@arrowpublications.co.uk. I can select some of my favourites and include them in the next up and coming arrows. I am not sure about you, but I would love to go out for a Sunday lunch or even book a holiday somewhere in the sun. We have taken all these things for advantage and now we are in a situation of not knowing when our local pub will open, our local café for coffee and cake and even the prospect of booking a holiday whether in the UK or abroad. By the time you receive this issue we may have some clarification, fingers crossed we do. I think we all need something to look forward to. I am certainly hoping the schools will be open on March 8th, as home schooling for me is becoming a chore!

Census 2021 will happen on Sunday 21st March and will be the first digital-first census. It is easy to do and can be done on any device. You will get an access code from the Office for National Statistics. Simply go online and enter the code into their secure website to get started. For more information log onto About the census - Census 2021 I would love to receive any good news from the local community; maybe some planned zoom meeting for your organisations; a special birthday or anything you would like to share with your local community. The deadline for the April issue is Friday 12th March for delivery by Sunday 4th April.

Enjoy the read and keep safe!

Community News Axholme Camera Club – ‘ZOOM’ and a new Website The past year has brought many challenges; challenges that organisations such as Axholme Camera Club have worked hard to overcome. From the outset, the committee realised the importance of retaining members’ interest and enthusiasm and the need to provide a focus to offset the confines of Covid 19. Holding true to its commitment to inspire, challenge and support, members of the club have utilised ZOOM to maintain a full programme of events – which has brought the benefit of hearing presentations from photographers across the UK and from France and Australia. It’s fair to say that from the outset members, judges and speakers had little if any, experience of ZOOM, but those with the time and dedication took it upon themselves to find a way forward. Of course, there were some minor technical hiccups initially, but now everything seems to be running smoothly. The club has also committed to supporting the mental well-being of those in the community by providing opportunities to progress their photography skills and raise their self-esteem. Consequently, Axholme Camera Club has been shortlisted as a Lincolnshire Co-op Community Champion for Spring 2021. If you are a member of Lincs Co-op and would like to help the club progress with this aim, please take the time to vote for us. One other significant development has been the establishment of a new website. Two months of work by a dedicated team of four has created a website accessible to club members and the general public. Those who want to view the website and learn more about the club's activities can do so by Googling ‘Axholme Camera Club.’

Would you like to sponsor the cost of lighting at St Marys’ church, West Butterwick? St. Mary the Virgin Church was built in 1842 and the building was funded by public subscription. It is on the original site of an ancient Chapel of Ease. It is situated geographically almost in the centre of the village of West Butterwick. It has a steeple with a clock face on both the West and East side of the steeple. The clock mechanism was installed by Potts of Leeds and in the past had to be wound by hand. A few years ago the clock winding mechanism was changed to an electrical powered system. 18 months ago we welcomed a new rector to the village, Rev’d Paul Wilson who prior to the latest lockdown measures had led a weekly service in the Church. Since the information and advice from the Diocese and Government has meant that the Church had to close for services, Paul has produced a video service which can be viewed online. We are looking for sponsors, perhaps a donation for a birthday, anniversary or in memory of someone special. Please contact Mr or Mrs McLeod on 01724 782914 if you would like to support the church.

Epworth Music Day 2021 We had hoped that after last year’s Epworth Music Day went online because of Covid, we might be able to return to a live show this year. However, despite the roll-out of the vaccines, we still think that a live event in Epworth this June is too early. After all, we can’t control the number of people in the audience because we don’t sell tickets. The cancellation of this year’s Glastonbury brought our decision into focus. So, we’ll be putting on the 2021 Epworth Music Day on Saturday 19th June via our YouTube platform at https://www.youtube.com/channel/ UCVrUnk8GtvD21gX3SBR0eZA If you want to be part of this entertainment, please email me at peter.barnard@me.com

Spring brings new beginnings. Known as the season of new life with blooms of fresh buds and reemerging of beautiful colours, spring is an important time to take care of your lawn. We’re here to share our expert advice and help your lawn reach its full potential as the centrepiece of your garden. Preparing to spend more time in your garden requires little effort, but the results can be a gorgeous green space to be proud of. With over 30 years’ experience in Lawn Care, we can help you get the very best from your lawn over the spring months and prepare it for the transition into summer. Now winter has passed, the amount of mowing required will naturally increase. We recommend implementing a regular mowing programme, ensuring that mower blades are kept sharp or replaced when needed to avoid causing damage to the grass plant. If possible, it is best for a lawn to be cut at least once a week, to about 25mm (1"). A little maintenance in the form of consistent mowing will help train the grass to be stronger over time.

Another useful way to help a lawn through spring is to rake up any dead leaves and twigs and to also cut back overhanging shrubs and plants; this is because grass needs as much direct sunlight and air as possible to stay healthy and green. As the ground starts to warm, it's a good time to repair bare patches that can appear over winter. To do so, carefully rake the patch to create a bed, sow the seeds with a little top-soil and don't let them dry out, they will germinate in a few days (temperature permitting). We can assist in this regard with our bespoke Diamond Green seed and an excellent 100% organic top-dressing. The blossoming of new plants and increased growth of turfgrasses often correlates with an increase of weeds. Not only are unwanted weeds unsightly, but grass will also have to compete with weeds for light, air, water, and nutrients. To combat this, we can apply herbicide from March which is targeted at active weeds present in your lawn. GreenThumb treatments are tailored with the greatest care for lawns in the U.K. We have the solution to transform any piece of grass, whatever the size or condition into a healthy, fresh, and beautiful lawn for you to be proud of all year long. Start your journey to a beautiful lawn. Contact us today by calling 01427 238442 or email us at doncastereast@greenthumb.co.uk. To advertise please call 01302 532676 or 07912 643010 11

WOW so March is already here and Spring is on it’s way... My Daffodils and Snowdrops are looking amazing already and dare we dream we may get away this Summer to a beach? It doesn't matter if it’s in the UK or Europe or maybe you have bigger plans for further afield? We must dream and we must stay positive. We CAN get away this Summer, let’s start with a ‘staycation’. There are some beautiful lodges, little (and big) cottages and holiday parks around for booking this summer. Or why not book something on the Norfolk broads? This is where I have booked in August, a boating adventure for 7 nights ! Maybe you are hoping to get away to Europe somewhere and there is already talk of Greece letting us Brits in as long as we have had the vaccine. There really is hope that we can get away and we can do something this year and beyond. Remember if you book with an agent who should only offer Tour Operators with ABTA cover and if your holiday cannot go ahead due to FDCO advice, you WILL be offered a full refund or amend to another date. If you do not have ABTA cover then you are likely to end up with a credit note to redeem at a later date and a potential hard battle on your hands. If you are flying, make sure your package has ATOL protection. It is invaluable in these erratic travel times. Many people are aiming to get away in October, over half term as this seems far enough away to be feasible. The prices are fab and if you head to the Canaries or Turkey where the weather should still be hot you can pick up a bargain right now, get planning and booking. Please do head to my page on Facebook www.facebook.com/luanthornhillathaystravel and if you would like any ideas. I have plenty of holidays on my page or get in touch with me and I can put something together for you. Safe Luan Thornhill @ Hays Travel To advertise please call 01302 532676 orStay 07912 643010 13

Isle Lions Gratitude to Residents The Isle of Axholme Lions have now counted up their income over Christmas and are overwhelmed and grateful to all Isle residents for their generosity which swelled their funds by £5,800. Lions Treasurer, Chris Godley, said “Counting donations was not easy due to keeping any cash we received quarantined for a number of days. Die to pandemic regulations we decided not to collect door to door but we were very grateful to those who came out and pressed cash into our hands each evening. As well as Cash donations there was also income from text and card donations and the icing on the Christmas Cake was the Santa Videos.” Over 120 videos were made by Santa on behalf of the Lions and this, together with donations for visits to two Nursery Groups brought in over £1,500. Santa also visited Belton Primary and Wroot Travis Schools in person – all distanced of course – and also went online to Zoom into Crowle Primary Academy to speak with the younger children. Lion President, Mike Hare, said “We were also extremely grateful to one Epworth resident who donated £1,000 to our funds. A remarkable act of generosity that will help us to continue doing what we do, making a difference in the Isle and the wider world. While we are all locked down and keeping safe, elsewhere in the world natural disasters continue to afflict many countries and that is where Lions Club International Foundation steps in with substantial donations to clubs in these localities to make a difference in their community. In November and December 2020 alone, and adding to relief funding for Sisak-Moslavina County in Serbia which suffered more earthquakes just before New Year, the Foundation provided US$235,000 in Emergency grants for: Flood relief in India, Brazil, Italy, and Sri Lanka, Tropical storm relief in Colombia, Typhoon relief in the Philippines, Earthquake relief in Greece. We are truly part of an international organisation and we always look to support the Foundation, but the vast majority of our funds stay within the Isle. The boost to our funds will allow us to continue with our Primary School program of ROAR2021 which has been so successful over the last few years when we have had a number of winners in the Regional Finals. We look forward to offering ROAR2021 to all our primary schools and work with them in the Autumn Term.” A number of businesses in the area also had boxes for donations to be made and in Epworth they were:
