After a recent concert, the local paper said ‘We were regaled with some wonderful music that would have been common around the end of the 16th century. All sorts of instruments were played, from bagpipes to guitar to a variety of woodwind, and each was explained in an informal and interesting way. Interspersed with songs and dances, it was an evening full of magic’.

Happy Halloween 14
Epworth and District Flower Club The next meeting of the Flower Club will be the Open Evening on 14th November. This is an evening not to be missed and will be held in the hall of South Axholme Academy. This year Jonathan Moseley, an international demonstrator, will entertain with his “Festive Floral Fabulousness”. The title alone suggests an exciting evening. Tickets are available from any Flower Club member or by phoning Celia Jones on 07784 421273. Jonathan also will be bringing his own Christmas sales table. On Monday, 10th October members sat patiently at their Autumn Workshop while Jo Smith, a NAFAS demonstrator, began to demonstrate. Everyone had gathered their seedheads, flowers and grasses and sat with their copper wreath ring and straw and other necessities on the tables in front of them. Jo demonstrated how to tightly cover the ring with the straw and then inserted 7 plastic test tubes around the circle. Into these she explained the sort and size of flowers, grasses and seasonal materials necessary to make a very original display. The test tubes formed “legs” to lift the ring enabling it to be used as a table decoration. Jo used a variety of flowers and tiny foliage and explained how the members could add any seasonal materials of individual choice to cover the straw as appropriate. Her result was very attractive and she made the whole exercise look simple. The members began, each creating a unique decoration as there was an enormous variety of materials. There was a wonderful buzz of conversation as the evening progressed and Jo helped and encouraged and finally there were about 27 amazingly different arrangements. The evening concluded with refreshments and clearing up! There was an amount of straw on the floor of St Andrew’s Church, but everyone departed after an interesting evening anticipating another interesting evening on November 14th in South Axholme school where their only involvement would be applause!

Crowle Peatland Railway Spooky Goings-on at Crowle Peatland Railway
-
Saturday, Sunday 29-30th October The moors have been a mysterious place full of boggarts, bogles and other fearsome beasts. Come and ride the ghost train and you just may catch sight of some of these fearsome beasts – that’s if they don’t get you first. There will also be activities for children and the cafe will be open for seasonal food and drink. Saturday 29th October – 4pm-8pm Sunday 30th October – 3pm-7pm
Other news from Crowle Peatland Railway We are progressing with the restoration of 711, the Lisbon Tram, the interior has been completed and most of the exterior paintwork will be complete by the Christmas Event - we will then have the problem of sorting out a new canvas on the roof. Acquisition of the tram and its restoration have been made possible by a generous donation from the SSE Keadby Wind Farm Community Fund. New carriages are being constructed using frames that were given to us by Statfold Barn Railway in Staffordshire. These are expected to be complete in time for visits to Father Christmas in December.
We always need new volunteers! If you are interested in becoming a member and volunteering please feel free to drop into one of our work parties on Wednesday and Saturday mornings - we are a friendly bunch and always looking for new willing hands.
Crowle Brickworks Locomotive Group A private group has rescued the Hibberd locomotive that used to operate at Crowle Brickworks until 1968, when it was replaced by dumpers. The locomotive with works number 1881, was built in 1934 and worked on a 1′ 8″ gauge tramway at Crowle Brickworks. It is a Hibberd “Y” type, with a Ford 8hp petrol engine, and fitted with a cab. After the line closed the loco was bought for preservation in October 1970 by Richard Morris of Kent, one of the consortium of enthusiasts who later set up the narrow-gauge collection at Gloddfa Ganol. Mr Morris re-gauged it to 2′ gauge in 1972. The locomotive has for several years been located at the Steeple Grange Light Railway near Wirksworth in Derbyshire but was at risk of being scrapped. This group have been given permission to store and work on the loco at the Old Peatworks, on the proviso that it does not distract from the hard work that volunteers are putting into current Peatland Railway projects. Does anyone have memories of the loco when operatedmention at Crowle?“The Please get in 18 it Please Arrow” touch with the group - angus@townley.com

Remember a loved one and Light up a Life with Lindsey Lodge Lindsey Lodge Hospice and Healthcare has revealed plans to hold its annual Light up a Life Service at 6.45pm on Thursday 15 December at Normanby Hall Country Park. The 30-year old charity is inviting families and friends to come together to remember and celebrate the lives of lost loved ones at the event, which will be a very special service of carols, readings, music, celebration and reflection, including appearances from the Humberside Police Band, accompanied by choir Hospice Harmonies, as well as Piper Danny Fleming. Lindsey Lodge Fundraising Manager Kirsty Walker said: “We’re extremely grateful to Normanby Hall Country Park and North Lincolnshire Council for supporting our Light up a Life service again this year. “The Hall and gardens provide such a beautiful setting for this special evening of celebration and reflection, and allow us to welcome even more supporters to one of the most important memorial events in our Lindsey Lodge calendar.” She added: “This has been our 30th anniversary year, which has seen us complete one of our biggest expansion plans in 20 years, as we opened our new six-bed inpatient Butterfly Wing, along with a 24/7 hour specialist palliative care advice service – the Butterfly Line, to enable us to reach even more local people and families who need our support.” Lindsey Lodge’s Light up a Life service welcomes anyone who has lost someone, not just those which represents a life, that will remain lit throughout the Christmas period in Lindsey Lodge’s Memorial Garden. The service will also be streamed live for anyone unable to attend the Normanby Hall event.Kirsty said: “We are a local charity supporting local people, and we hope that by taking part in our Light up a Life Service, we’ll all be sharing a little light, love and hope to mark the end of one of our most important years.” For more information about Lindsey Lodge please visit its website at www.lindseylodgehospice.org.uk, email llh.enquiries@nhs.net or phone 01724 270835.

Fundraisers raise thousands for Lindsey Lodge in biggest ever Glow Walk
More than 550 walkers helped light up the night sky to raise much-needed funds for charity on Friday 9 September. Glow sticks, face paint and fairy lights were in order for Lindsey Lodge Hospice & Healthcare’s 10 and 5-mile Glow Walk, which took place during its 30th birthday year. Lindsey Lodge Deputy Chief Executive Tom Moody said: “We’re absolutely delighted with how many people supported this year’s event! “We hoped that this would be our biggest and best Glow Walk yet to help us celebrate 30 years of Lindsey Lodge, and the local community came together and helped us achieve this. “The atmosphere was fantastic, seeing all of our supporters dressed up ready to glow, while also paying touching tributes to their loved one with our Memory Mile. All of the early signs are that we’re on track to raise our target of £40,000 for the event – so a massive thanks to everyone who took part!” Musician Connor Hanly, along with Rock’Em Pop’Em Discos provided the right beats to help build the energy on the night, and in true Glow Walk tradition, local Zumba teacher Penny Goulding got everyone limbered up at the start line, before Lindsey Lodge Chief Executive Karen Griffiths, who was helped by hospice patients, officially started the 2022 event. Lindsey Lodge mascot Lindsey Bear also made a special appearance to offer his support. Tom said: “We are so grateful to everyone who made the night such a success –from the entertainers to the patients, staff and volunteers – and of course all of the amazing Glow Walkers!” He added: “The demand for our services is extremely high and we’re now supporting more people than ever in our 30 year history, so every penny raised from this event will ensure we continue to provide our specialist care to North Lincolnshire patients and families.” For more information about Lindsey Lodge please visit its website at www.lindseylodgehospice.org.uk, email llh.enquiries@nhs.net or phone 01724 270835.
