Welcome to the Epworth and Belton Arrow
As the nights grow longer and the air turns crisp, November in the Isle ushers in a season that brings our community closer together.
One of the most anticipated events this month is undoubtedly Bonfire Night, set to light up the skies over The Isle and other nearby villages on November 5th. The crackling fires, the smell of roasted marshmallows, and the vibrant bursts of fireworks will once again remind us of the joy of community gatherings. This long-held British tradition, commemorating Guy Fawkes Night, brings not only entertainment but also a sense of unity to our towns. Be sure to wrap up warm, gather your loved ones, and head to the local bonfire celebrations – a moment to enjoy, reflect, and create lasting memories. This year Epworth community bonfire is on Saturday 2nd November at Epworth Show Ground, not only a great event but all proceeds go to local charities too.
While the colder weather may tempt us to stay indoors, personal trainer Jodie Grant is on a mission to keep you moving. With tailored programs Jodie provides an excellent way to stay active during the winter months. Whether you're a seasoned athlete or just starting out, there’s something for everyone. The energy and motivation Jodie brings to her sessions can inspire us all to keep our health a priority, even as the holiday season approaches. See her advert on page 6 for further details.

Isle Group of the Lincolnshire Wildlife Trust
- Talk on the Conservation work of the National Trust by Carl Hawke
Thursday November 7th
At our November meeting on Thursday November 7th, we will be having a talk on the conservation work done by the National Trust who look after various properties and a large amount of land. Carle Hawke used to work for the Lincs Wildlife Trust as warden at Gibraltar Point, has worked for the RSPB and is now in charge of conservation work for the East Midlands Area of the National Trust.

Crowle & District WI meeting on Thursday 7th November 2024 is all about the important work of the first Responders/Lives. They will bring all their equipment they have to carry, explain all about their work and show CPR and basic first aid. The venue is Crowle Community Hall, Woodland Avenue, Crowle DN17 4LL and starts at 7pm. We also hold a Welfare monthly for members who just want a chat or are feeling a bit lonely and want a cuppa and chat at Joy's house and we have a members sub group, Crafty Bees, which members can join for a small fee. Haxey & Westwoodside Heritage
Society's next meeting is on Thursday, 14th November at 7.30pm in Westwoodside Village Hall. Helen Slade of the Friends of Hyde Park Cemetery is coming along to give an illustrated talk entitled "A Biography of Doncaster". Discover the fascinating stories of some of the famous individuals buried in one of the largest municiple cemeteries in the country. All welcome, £3 including refreshments.
High Levels WI
At the September meeting Kate NcNeil gave a wonderful talk about her prize winning bull, Boxster. Kate’s talk was absolutely enthralling and many agreed Kate was amongst the best speakers heard by the group. At the October meeting, the usual Harvest Auction was held and proceeds will be used to enable High Levels to continue to offer a varied programme next year.
In November this year, High Levels will hold a Spanish evening with a meal provided by the Reindeer Inn, where the group meets. Then in December there will be a social evening The programme for next year includes a variety of speakers and opportunities for members to socialise and get to know newer members. Scarlett Kirwan, the rising folk/pop artist, released her debut EP ‘Glow’ on October 4th. The EP, available on all streaming platforms, showcases Scarlett Kirwan’s signature blend of pop and folk with lyrics that explore the triumphs and tribulations of adolescence. The EP ‘Glow’ was a heartfelt and honest collection of songs that blend soulful melodies with modern folk/pop elements, creating a unique soundscape that draws listeners in from the first note. Each of the tracks explores a different side to Scarletts life, which many young people will find reliability and comfort in, with the songs discussing topics of anxiety, insecurities, dreams and youth. Scarlett is a pop-folk singer songwriter hailing from the Isle of Axholme, within the North Lincolnshire countryside. Scarlett spent her childhood always humming and singing, and creating her own musical chaos. Scarlett first picked up a guitar at the age of 11, and within months she’d graced the stage of a local folk club. Scarlett’s music is a blend of pop and folk-exploring both elements of the genres in her own unique way. Her songs and live performances are marked by her “magical voice”, and her marvellous melodies. Since starting her musical career, Scarlett has ventured to multiple cities performing in bars, music venues, festivals and various stages. At the tender age of 13, Scarlett released her first original song ‘Sweet Home’: this bloomed her love for songwriting. During her promotion for her studio single ‘Marvellous Mess’ she landed her first BBC Radio Interview. Much of Scarlett’s inspiration for her music comes from iconic artists such as Joni Mitchell and Florence Welch. When it comes to songwriting, Taylor Swift is a big influence due to her poetic writing and relatability.

Epworth Short Mat Bowls
Short Mat Bowls is an indoor sport that is a modern variation on Lawn Bowls. It is played on a shorter mat indoors, so not dependent on the weather and doesn’t require the same strength as outdoor bowling. The sport is enjoyed by people of all ages and abilities and is a great way to keep active and socialise.
Come along and join our friendly group in the Sports Hall at Epworth Leisure Centre. Sessions are held on Monday, Wednesday and Friday, 3.45 – 5.45pm. Tuition is provided and woods are available to borrow. Flat soled shoes are required.

1st Isle of Axholme BP Scouts November 2024
Beavers is restarting! Thanks to all the waiting list people for your patience, while we recruited and trained a new team. We will meet from 6-7pm on a Tuesday evening in Westwoodside village hall, and have lots of fun and games planned. Watch this space for welcome photos next month.
Since our Summer break, the cubs have returned with a few new members, so we started this term with games/sports to get to know each other. We have also been working hard towards our “Map Reader” badge, which they have now successfully earned and will be presented with soon. Some of the skills they have learnt are how to set a map and compass, pacing and understanding basic map symbols. They have also been learning about the union flag and all of the flags that make it up (and why Wales isn’t included!). For each flag they learnt facts about that country (symbols, patron saints, national days) and played a fun team game to get their brains working!
Scouts have done lots of badge work this autumn – “Observer” badge (following a natural trail like sticks and pebbles to direct one another; Kim's game remembering items; identifying familiar sounds; and reciting key parts of an eyewitness account), and also completing final tasks in their “Camper”, “Explorer” and “Venture” badges. To achieve these badges scouts needed to help with the organising and planning the layout of a camp, some scouts needed to sleep out in a bivouac and learn how to vault a 5 bar gate, others needed to make a carrying device using tarpaulin and rope. Lots of these skills were employed in our survival camp we call "Back to Basics" held in Caistor. We cook all ou r food on open fires, which is a challenge when you have adventurous menus! Scouts have to build wood stores first, collect the wood they will need (from a woodpile, not foraging!) and then chop/ split the wood (axes) and prepare kindling (knife skills). It is their responsibility to keep their fires going until supper time when we do the traditional campfire (including tall tales and songs). We have also been practicing accuracy in a range of ball skills, nerf wars and throwing a rescue tope 20m long. All great life skills.
Looking ahead to Remembrance weekend, we will be parading through Haxey with all the uniformed organisations, in full uniform with all these newly achieved badges on display!
Sections all meet at the Westwoodside Village Hall: Monday (Cubs, Scouts and Senior Scouts) meeting at 6pm (Cubs), and 7pm (Scouts & Senior Scouts), and Tuesday evening at 6pm (Beavers, from October 29th).
Remember, we are still looking to recruit more leaders/ helpers for all sections. Please get in touch if this is something you would like to do.
