Epworth and District Flower

Club On a cool September evening the Flower Club met at their usual venue of St Andrew’s Church Epworth. The audience was slightly smaller than usual as several members were away enjoying a late summer holiday. There was also an element of illness and the original demonstrator herself had withdrawn due to ill health. However, Toni Gravel the Fountain Court Florist replaced her and entertained with a demonstration based somewhat on autumn and autumn fruits. She told her audience that the arrangements were to be of a suitable size for display on a table which was a very acceptable size especially for the lucky raffle winners. One arrangement actually incorporated vegetables and a wreath was created entirely using sprigs of ivy which is currently flowering beautifully. The evening was enjoyed by all and Toni demonstrated that beauty can be found in gerbera, gorgeous green chrysanthemums, roses, anthuriums and even broccoli.

The next meeting of the Flower Club will be held at 7.30 pm on Monday, 14th October when Marie Bradley will give a demonstration probably entitled “From India with Love”.

However the following month, November, sees the Open Evening when the Flower Club hosts Mark Entwistle. He will demonstrate in South Axholme Academy hall. Tickets for this event usually sell quickly so make sure you have yours.

Epworth Short Mat Bowls

Short Mat Bowls is an indoor sport that is a modern variation on Lawn Bowls. It is played on a shorter mat indoors, so not dependent on the weather and doesn’t require the same strength as outdoor bowling. The sport is enjoyed by people of all ages and abilities and is a great way to keep active and socialise.

Come along and join our friendly group in the Sports Hall at Epworth Leisure Centre. Sessions are held on Monday, Wednesday and Friday, 3.45 – 5.45pm. Tuition is provided and woods are available to borrow. Flat soled shoes are required.

If you would be interested in attending a session or would like more information please contact Edwin on 07742877538 We look forward to seeing you.

We finished our summer term on a high with a combined cub, scout and seniors camp. We played games on the beach and the field, jumped waves, dug holes and hunted for shells. Our main Saturday activity was a longer hike to test our navigation and fitness.

The weather didn't dampen our spirits and lots of fun was had by all.

Obviously none of these camps happen without the hard work and dedication of the helpers.

Today we celebrate Andrew, who has completed 15 (yes 15!!!) camps, he has been head chef and I am sure the scouts/cubs will tell you what a great job he does (they certainly don’t go home hungry!)

Andrew lowered the flag on camp, which is set to be his last camp before he enjoys his retirement. I am sure you will all agree this is pretty epic. He has ably handed over the baton to David!

AXHOLME ORCHESTRA’S ROCK CONCERT

The Isle of Axholme Orchestra will be performing a ‘CLASSICAL ROCK CONCERT’ at the Imperial Hall, Epworth on Thursday, 7th November starting at 7.30pm

It promises to be an exciting evening, with the local musicians performing orchestral versions of a range of much-loved rock and pop songs, including hits from U2, Queen, Journey, Coldplay, Rolling Stones, Pulp, and many, many more!

“We’ve done all sorts of themed concerts over the years,” explained Robert Steadman, the conductor of the orchestra, “including providing live accompaniment to a silent movie , a Bridgerton-themed concert with the orchestra dressed in Regency-style clothes, and a concert about artists and works of art in an art gallery.”

The Isle of Axholme Orchestra was founded in the year 2000 and rehearses at Epworth Baptist Church on Tuesday evenings during term time. All orchestral musicians are welcomed and there are no auditions. Future plans include a Christmas extravaganza and accompanying ‘Battleship Potemkin’, another silent movie.

So, how will the orchestra deal with rock and pop songs?

“We’re really looking forward to the concert,” said Ruth Birkett, the principal violin. “It’s a bit different for us, but it’ll be a great sound and a fantastic evening.”

Advance tickets are now on sale online, priced £8 (accompanied under 16s FREE) and can be booked at: www.ticketsource.co.uk/ioax - we hope to also have some tickets available on the door.

Full detail of the concert can be found here: https://facebook.com/events/s/classical-rock-concert-isleof/3866832436920555/

Our Kiln Dried Firewood Logs are selected from the finest hardwood and have been through a kiln drying process, which means they are perfectly dried and ready to burn on your open fire or wood burning stove.

Light, clean and easy to handle, they also emit a delightful aroma when burnt. The performance of your stove is directly related to the quality of the wood you use. Our kiln dried wood has a moisture content between 10 and 20 percent, ensuring it burns hotter for longer, increasing the efficiency of your stove or appliance.
