Community News HATFIELD WOODHOUSE AMATEUR GARDENING SOCIETY The Society met for its March meeting on Tuesday 7th at Hatfield Woodhouse Club. Our speaker for this event was Sarah Hopps who took us on an adventure “Touring the Gardens of Britain”. But before the adventure started Sarah told us about her career in horticulture, starting selling cuttings and seedlings at her garden gate, broadcasting on Radio York and now acting as an expert guide on specialised holidays. Next Sarah spoke about some of the plants which she had brought with her to sell - quite a variety of plants from miniature daffodils to more mature shrubs. After this entertaining and informative chat, we got to the main part of her presentation, the Tour of the Gardens of Britain. This started off in North Yorkshire where Sarah lives, and was a complete anticlockwise circuit of the British Isles including the Botanic Gardens of Edinburgh, the Castle of May on the north coast of Scotland, Logan gardens in Galloway, the Eden Project, Wisley, and Beth Chatto’s Garden near Colchester. This journey was beautifully illustrated with old fashioned “slide” photographs. Sarah stayed to answer questions, and sell plants. A large audience was appreciative of this presentation. On Saturday 18 March the Society held its Spring Show in the Club. One of the continuing pleasures of the Spring Show is the welcoming scent of Hyacinths as one entered the show hall. The full report of the Show will be in next month’s edition. The next meeting of the Society is on Tuesday 7 March when the speaker will be Aaron Hickman from Askham Bryan College. As usual we will be meeting at Hatfield Woodhouse Club commencing at 7-30pm. Everybody is welcome to this meeting, both members and non members.
A wonderful and successful evening held in Hatfields on Thursday the 23rd February. Starting with a 3 course meal and followed by the extremely entertaining Dr Jive, who had everyone dancing to the sounds of the 50s and 60s. Thanks to all who attended and making it a sell-out. To all who donated raffle prizes which included the Mumbai restaurant (now known as AlAkhtars), Roger Tuby who once again displayed his generosity and the School who's staff provided some beautiful hampers. Carl, the head of the school, was in attendance and was ably supported by many of his colleagues from Coppice. A total of £940 was raised and further to that a good pal of mine donated £60 rounding the total to a fantastic £1,000. The money is to be spent on a stage and I believe, sometime in the future, we will have an opportunity to see one of their productions. Thanks to Julie at the Arrow for the advertising she allowed, in the February edition, which went a long way to selling tickets. Gordon Harper.

Travis Go Train-Tastic! Welcome to our first report from year 1. Last half term they were learning about transport and enjoyed a visit to York to the National Railway Museum. Both the adults and children had a wonderful time and came back filled with stories about the different trains they had seen and the different activities they had been involved in. They all wrote a recount about the event but this term, Matthew has been chosen to be our resident reporter. I went to the museum on a bus. First I saw lots of trains. I saw the Eurostar. I also saw the Mall and the Bullet, the Rocket, the Flying Scotsman, the Queen’s train and the mail train. I also saw the Chinese trains. I had my packed lunch. Next I learnt about George Stephenson. Finally I came back home. We would like to thank all the adults who came along and made our visit so special. We hope you enjoyed our report.

Why NEUTER?
There are many reasons why you should consider neutering your pet. In the UK today there is an over population crisis, with not enough homes to go round for the thousands of unwanted cats, kittens, dogs and puppies. Unfortunately this sad fact is also true for rabbits. The only humane answer to the problem is to neuter animals thus preventing additional unwanted litters. WHATS INVOLVED? Neutering is the term used to describe either spaying or castration, a routine operation carried out under general anaesthetic: Spaying involves the removal of the uterus and ovaries preventing the female from becoming pregnant. Castration refers to the removal of the testicles making it impossible for the male to reproduce. We can neuter dogs from 6 months of age. We can neuter cats from 4 & ½ months of age. We can neuter rabbits from 16 weeks of age. WHAT ARE THE BENEFITS? Prevents females from coming into season and becoming pregnant. Helps combat urine marking, roaming and dominance in males. Reduces the risk of mammary, uterine and testicular cancers. These benefits apply not only to cats and dogs but also to rabbits. Male rabbits have the same drawbacks as tom cats if they are not castrated, most are territorial, frequently spraying urine and show aggressive tendencies. Neutering female rabbits is even more important. From sexual maturity most females become territorial and aggressive, often attacking other rabbits they also have repeated false pregnancies and may growl, scratch and bite their owners. Please feel free to contact the practice to discuss these operations in more detail on 01405 812142

68th Doncaster Hatfield Scout Group It has been another fun-filled half term for all the sections at 68th. Beavers have focussed on their disability awareness badge. Working towards our community badge we also took hyacinth bulbs we planted at the end of last year to the local nursing home Manor View where we sang songs for the residents before giving them the plants. We are all very proud of Max and Cleo who have achieved their Bronze Award, the highest award possible at Beaver level. The Cub section celebrated 100 years of Cubs with a Promise camp at Austerfield Field Centre. They renewed their promises at 19.16 on 16th December, along with thousands of other Cubs across the country. The weekend was spent doing Christmas crafts, a walk, playing games and having fun. The New Year has seen the cubs spending time stargazing, ice skating, bowling and learning where their food comes from with Tesco Farm to Fork initiative. Scouts have enjoyed a mixture of activities which has included making mini hovercrafts, stargazing at Austerfield, a visit to the Apple store in Meadowhall and canoeing with Green Star Canoe Club at Maltby leisure centre. But the highlight has to be the District Cooking competition where 3 of our scouts entered first the elimination round in February. It is a while since 68th have entered the district cooking competition, but our scouts have proved to be very able cooks on camp and they were delighted to get through to the final with 5 other groups. The competition is scored on all the elements of the cooking, Points are awarded for ingredients used and how much preparation is from scratch, teamwork throughout, hygiene, presentation and of course flavour. Each team had 2 hours to prepare and cook a 3 course meal for 2 people with a limit of £15 for ingredients. As you can see they did an excellent job and were thrilled to win the competition. For full section programme details see the website. If you would like to join our beaver, cub or scout group please contact Sue Lloyd (Beaver Leader) on 07802 875738 or follow the links on the website. Beavers are 6-8yrs, Cubs 8-10yrs and Scouts 10-14yrs. All sections are for both boys and girls and meet at Hatfield Woodhouse Village Hall during term time on Wednesday evenings. CONFESSIONS OF A SERIAL LITTER PICKER!
The Keep Britain Tidy ‘Great British Spring Clean’ event 3rd – 5th March was looming but the night before I didn’t think I was going to make it as I’d started with a rotten cold - sore throat, runny nose & was sneezing for England so I dosed myself up with Extra Strength Sudafed (other brands are available) & pockets full of tissues & went off the next morning to meet the other Friends of Quarry Park volunteers at 10am at the St Mary’s Road car park entrance to Quarry Park. Amanda, Barbara, Bob, Delyse, Gay, Janice, Karen, Pete & a lady from DMBC were already there, lurking with intent. We were all kitted out in our FoQP high viz jackets, armed with litter pickers & lots of blue, heavy duty ‘Keep Britain Tidy’ litter bags. We split up into several groups & set off to rid Quarry Park & surrounding areas of the blight of its awful piles of rubbish – discarded foil crisp packets, sweet wrappers, pop & beer cans, polystyrene food boxes, glass bottles, plastic bottles & bags, paper cups, straws, old clothes, a bright pink wig! (you know who you are) & a selection of balls, etc, etc. Hardly any of these items are bio-degradable so will remain intact for years just getting blown around & around, making our Park & streets look dreadful. By 11am Amanda, Karen & me had filled 3 bags from the path down from Dunsville Post Office to the Park, then the rain started. The rain got worse but we kept going until 12.15, now with 6 bags full but on a positive note we did uncover lots of beautiful snowdrops, purple crocuses & some lone daffodils that were previously buried. We dragged our heavy bags back into Quarry Park & reconvened at the car park to discuss our ‘spoils’ with the other volunteers who had collected 12 bags of rubbish! We were all absolutely shattered but we hadn’t quite finished clearing the path from the Post Office yet so me & Amanda returned to our mission (should we choose to accept it?) & after to clear the High Street bus stop areas, especially the one opposite the Flare Path pub which was horrendous. Weary, hungry & as wet as we could possibly get, we struggled on to finally complete our task with another 3 bags filled by 2pm. I hope that everyone has noticed what an improvement we all made to the area we live in & are proud of. It is a shame that we have to do it but imagine what it would be like if we didn’t. Please think about the impact of dropping litter, not only on our environment but also to our precious local wildlife, we are all responsible for our actions & it doesn’t take a minute to put rubbish in a nearby bin or even take it home. It’s got to be worth it if it keeps our villages & parks looking cleaner & prettier. I’m thinking of trying to get Litter Picking reclassified as an ‘Extreme Sport’, we certainly felt it was after 4 hours of bending, stretching, slipping down mud banks, being attacked by brambles & hawthorn bushes in the rain & we have the scars to prove it! but at the end of it all, I must confess I enjoyed seeing the final result – all clean & tidy again so please help us to keep it that way. Oh plus lots of calories burnt off in the process! A Friend of Quarry Park, see more photo’s on our Facebook site/website.

Hatfield Community Library Classes Monday, Rhyme Time, 10:30-11:15 (or as long as you want to stay in the library). Yoga 6:30-8:00 Tuesday, Art Class, 10:00-12:30 I try to attend this class as often as possible. At the moment we are using water based oils which happily do not smell and are easier to use than watercolours. Some people just like to do their own thing using media of their choice. Reading Group 3:00-4:00pm. This is a small, friendly group which meets on the last Tuesday of each Month. We have an informal discussion about the books we read. Not everyone likes the books we read but this makes an interesting discussion. I have found some books interesting even if I did not like them. Being in the group makes us read books we might not have chosen ourselves and it is surprising that some of them have been enjoyable. This Month we are reading “The Taint of Midas” by Anne Zouroudi Yoga 3:00-4:00pm Gentle Yoga 4:30-6:00pm Stronger Yoga 6:30-8:00pm Friday Readers’ Group on the last Friday of the month 10:30-12:30 . Next month’s book is “The Loney” by Andrew Michael Hurley. Needles and Pins twice a month. 10:30-12:30. This is a friendly craft group which would welcome new members. Please ring the library for more information about any courses. Easter Activities. Lego Robotics. 7-9years, 10-12:30 9-11years, 1-3:30. There is some cross over with the ages as families with children from each group can come to either session as long as the youngest child can be supported. My Grandson who is just 5 has been coming for the past two years and is nearly able to do it all on his own. Craft Session. The time and date of this has not been settled yet. Friends of Jubilee Park hold their meetings at the library. There are information sheets and Questionnaires available at the library. Contact the Elderly and the library would like to host tea party for the elderly at the library but we need volunteers to transport some elderly people to the library. A date has not yet been set as any volunteer drivers will need to have the usual CRB check. Once this has been done, we can then set the date for the tea party. MP Surgeries Caroline Flint will be holding monthly surgeries in the library. If you have any issues you would like to discuss with the MP, please make an appointment by ringing 01302 623330 DMBC and Hatfield Town Councillors also hold surgeries in the library. All our activities can also be found on Facebook. Please share the activities with friends and family to help us to advertise them. We are trying to improve our Facebook site to make it more Interior Painter & Decorator informative and interesting. World Book Day Welcome to the latest report from Hatfield Woodhouse Primary School. We have been having fun celebrating World Book Day by coming in our pyjamas and reading wonderful books. We also have the amazing opportunity to work with Creative8 (Doncaster’s new Pauline Quirke Academy) in a drama workshop. If you didn’t know PQA is a wonderful drama group and the principal is Janet Marsh. To find out more read on! The day started when we all came in to School in our favourite, cosy PJs and had a fabulous interactive theatre experience about Roald Dahl’s famous book – Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. As soon as they arrived at our school it was a big surprise to the children because our Breakfast Club was transformed into Charlie Bucket’s house and the Chocolate Factory. We learned that if you do good deeds sometime in your life sometimes something good will happen to you. Here are some reviews from our pupils and teachers: “I enjoyed it when PQA came and did a workshop of Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. It was like being in the movie” “My favourite character was Violet because she actually came and sat next to me.” “I liked it best when Mike TV was shrunk so small, he fitted in the box.” “As a teacher, I liked when the action stopped and the children were questioned about character development and motivation!” Our Favourite books. Hugh – Year 6 “My favourite book is ‘Lemony Snicket All the wrong questions’ by Daniel Handler. Mrs Gray – Year 5 “My favourite book is called ‘Of Mice and Men’ by John Steinback. I also like using a website called Oxford Owl about reading free books online.”
School trips
On the second of March eight lucky students were chosen to take part in the Delta Academy Games at the English Institute of Sport. Some of the people that went said they loved it and thought it was a great opportunity to show their talent in sport and a good way to challenge them. When they went they had a surprising arrival of Katerina Johnson-Thompson, who took part in the Rio Olympics 2016. Conisbrough Castle Year 2 went on an amazing school trip to Conisbrough Castle to learn about historical castles and how they lived during that period of time. It was half burnt-down and in ruins, caused by the wars. Most of the children were scared when they walked to the top of the tower and said it was because they thought that they were very high up. Make sure to get next month’s copy to find out about what’s going on. Thank you for reading! By Year 5 reporters: Lois, Lily, Emily, Maddison, Alex, Evie and Albie.
