Welcome to the April 2020 issue of The Hatfield Arrow. I thought I would give a shout out to all the local shops and businesses who may be suffering during the Coronavirus outbreak. Please remember to support them during this time, go to the butchers, green grocers, local coffee shops etc…. The big supermarket chains can take the strain but the small businesses, florists, hairdressers, newsagents will feel the punch and will find it harder to come back from. Please send any details you would like including in the magazine to me at the contact details opposite. The deadline for the May issue is Thursday 16th April.
Best Wishes Julie Morrell

Community News At the time of writing we are still hopeful that the season will start on time and that everyone has stayed healthy during the recent health concerns. Our Friday Family Evenings commence at Carr Side Land on the 10th April when all age groups from Under 9 upwards will start preparing for the season ahead, following on from our busy indoor sessions. The seniors then start their games on the 18th April and will be looking to build on last seasons successes under new skipper Tommy Hyde. Our pavilion project has received a major boost with the news the we are being put forward for ECB funding which will add to that agreed by Sport England. We are looking for local businesses and organisations that might wish to support us in terms of material or financial donations in return for great publicity for assisting with this exciting community project that will benefit the Doncaster East region. Please get in touch with us at Hatfield.towncc@outlook.com if you are able to assist in any way. It would be greatly appreciated. Here's to a fun and successful season for all our players and supporters.

Community News Friends of Quarry Park It’s officially Spring and Quarry Park is celebrating with one of the best displays of daffodils ever! To see the massed planting on Quarry Hill why not take the Quarry Hill walking route (yellow route) It is a short walk of ½ mile and 1180 steps which should take about 10 minutes. If you also walk up the slope onto the mound you can get an elevated view of the whole park and surrounding countryside, there are benches to take a break and enjoy the view. The March work party got off to a good start with warm sunshine and a mass of spring flowers all around. There were 9 volunteers and one DMBC Ranger. They cut and cleared the broken branches alongside the path through Warren Wood. A reminder to the public that this sort of damage causes extra work for the volunteers. The usual litter pick also took place maintaining the cleanliness standards of the site. Quarry Park is a popular area for dog walking but unfortunately not all dog walkers are applying acceptable behaviour and there have been reports recently of incidents involving dogs. The Public Spaces Protection Order applies on Quarry Park (see the Notice Boards for details of the order) which means that dogs must be controlled at all times and that dog fouling MUST be cleared up anywhere on the site. Please be aware that we do have members patrolling the park and if you are requested to comply with the P.S.P.O ruling you must do so. This should avoid any unpleasant confrontations. Our continuing work on the park is so that everyone can enjoy our beautiful open space and not have to be concerned about the actions of a thoughtless few. Our next Open Meeting will be on Wednesday 18 March at 7 p.m in the Methodist Church, Greens Road, Dunsville. This is a fairly informal meeting when all those interested in Quarry Park can meet the Friends Group with opportunities to share ideas or ask questions. The next Volunteer Work Party will be the fifth year running that the Friends of Quarry Park have taken part in the Keep Britain Tidy Great British Spring Clean. Our litter pick will be on Friday 3 April. All welcome to join us to do our bit on this great country wide initiative. Meet at the Green Flag Pole at 10 a.m. As usual all tools, protective clothing and refreshments will be provided. FOQP can be contacted via email thequarrypark@gmail.com or the Facebook Page Friends of Quarry Park.

Hatfield Community Library News Item Easter Events - Two craft activities have been booked- one on each Thursday of the holidays. The first session will be Easter related and the second one will be about Spring. Places will be limited so booking is essential. All our weekly events are on that website. There may be posters in local shops and Tesco Edenthorpe. We are having an Easter Raffle. Tickets will be £1 a strip. We now have a brand new Brother printer/scanner thanks to the efforts of Nicola at IT. We can now print, scan and fax, if requested. (Fax £1 for the first sheet and 50p thereafter.) We hopefully have the heating under control. Everyone knows how to adjust the temperature without botching up the whole system -which has happened. Future Events. We are hoping to book the theatre company which has performed some exciting and often very funny scenes for us. The previous performances were well attended and the refreshments as always enjoyed. There may be a slight rise in ticket price to help to cover our costs. To help us to raise some money so we can continue to provide activities, we hope to have a coffee morning with some crafts available to buy. Details of both these events will be advertised nearer the time. WEEKLY CLASSES - MONDAY (In Term time only) Rhyme Time 10:30-11:30 Children’s stories and songs. We read a variety of books and most of us have read and enjoyed books which we might otherwise have passed over on the shelf. The latest one was “Stoner” by John Williams. It took me a while to get interested in it but it had some scenes which livened it up. Books are provided for free by the library service. (Free activity). Yoga 6:3.0-8pm This is a lovely way to keep supple and fit. Judy tailors the exercises to match your ability. £6 per session Wednesday - Art Class 10:15-12:30 Tuition from an artist is available to help beginners and experienced artists. This is a friendly craft group which would welcome new members. Readers Group This is held on the last Friday of the month at 10:30. New members are always welcome to these groups. Please ring the library for more information about any courses. It is important to check, particularly in the holiday times, that these courses are on. The Yoga and art classes do have a charge for tutoring. Yoga is £6 a session and Art £30 every 4 week. You do not have to be a library member to attend our classes or events but we hope that you will like us enough to join. Family History. We have three Family History groups at the library. They have been going for a while but if you are interested in exploring your family history, Sherelle may have a beginner’s group you could join. You do not have to be a library member to attend but if you join, you can continue your research at any time. If you want to do your own research, then Ancestry and Find My Past are free to use for two hours at the library for library members. Computers. Our computers are free for library members to use for two hours. It is very easy to join the library and will not cost you anything. Fill in the form and show some identity e.g. driving license or an official letter with your name and address on it. Then you can use the computers and take out books. Some people came in just to print holiday information or to apply for jobs on-line. Unfortunately, we cannot advise you on filling in the application form but we can try to help with the practical use of the computer. NEW BOOKS. We receive list of new books/audio books available in the library system at regular intervals. The list contains the latest books by many popular authors and non-fiction books which have been added to the library system. Remember if we have not got them on our shelves, we can order them from other libraries. All our audio books are free of charge as part of a special promotional offer. DONCASTER CANCER DETECTION TRUST Good news about the CT scanner. The suite was opened on 6th March and some of our members went along and were very impressed. There will be an official opening which was originally planned for 24th April, but due to the coronavirus situation it has been postponed indefinitely. We will keep you informed, but in the meantime there are photographs on our website of the new suite. Our current prostate cancer appeal fund now stands at over £62,000 at the time of writing and we would like to thank everyone who has recently donated. We really do appreciate all your support. Registration is going well for our popular Midsummer Walk on Sunday, 17th May. It starts at 10am and is from Town Fields to Lakeside and return. The distance is approximately 6 miles, but can be reduced. It is all on public footpaths and is wheelchair and dog friendly. Entry is £6 and is free for disabled and children under the age of 12. Please contact Christine Whiteley, Tel. 01302 536472 or Email: musicline02@yahoo.co.uk. Christine is a member of Thorne Rural Lions who organise the walk for us. Please try and book beforehand as it saves queuing on the day, although you are welcome to register from 9am on the morning of the Walk. Our contact details are: 22 Wood Street, Doncaster DN1 3LW (entrance by the side of Kerry Gough Florists), second floor (lift available), Room 209. Tel. 01302 325029. Email: info@dcdt.co.uk. Website: dcdt.co.uk. We are still looking for a volunteer to take over the role of Honorary Secretary at our office in Wood Street. It does mean working alone for the majority of the time, but there are social occasions to get together with everyone else. If you would like more information or would like to pop along for a chat please contact Ruth on 01302 325029 to arrange a visit. It is very rewarding work and you will be made very welcome.
HATFIELD WOODHOUSE AMATEUR GARDENING SOCIETY At the latest meeting on Tuesday 3 March our guest speakers were Jill and Martin Field, with a presentation entitled “Gardening on the Menu”. Jill and Martin live in North Yorkshire where Martin is a professional plantsman, show organiser and appears on Radio York, and Jill is a keen cook using the produce from their garden as a basis for her dishes. The presentation, illustrated by very attractive photographs, was done in an interesting way. Jill and Martin spoke alternately for a few minutes each starting with Martin who featured a part of the garden and then Jill followed up with some menus and anecdotes. The menus were tailored to suit the output of fruit and vegetables being grown. The interplay, with humorous asides, went on for over an hour, followed by the audience being treated to “tasters” of some of Jill’s produce. The chocolate and beetroot cake was delicious! The large attendance enjoyed a great evening. Saturday 14 March brought us our first Show of the year, the Spring Show. As usual this was held at the Hatfield Woodhouse Club and once again the Show benches were a picture. After the presentation of the trophies our President, John Brown, conducted the auction of unclaimed exhibits in his usual entertaining way. The Trophy Winners were: Bulb Cup - Val Geoghegan; Kitchen Memorial Trophy for Daffodils - Joan Brown; Jubilee Trophy for best exhibit in bulbs and plants classes - Yvonne Tomlinson for her Amaryllis; Jean Lewis Trophy for Floral Art - Sally Mainprize for her “Spring Explosion in a Basket”; Produce Cup - Pam Banks; Betty Colwill Trophy for the Set Recipe - Pat Tonge; Dorrick Plate for best entry in Produce Classes - Pam Banks and Handicrafts - Pam Banks and Brenda White, joint winners. The next meeting will be on Tuesday 7 April at Hatfield Woodhouse Club commencing at 7-30pm. The speaker on this occasion will be David Shore with “The History of Cusworth Hall”. David is the Head Gardener at the Hall. As always, everybody is welcome to the meeting.
