Our next activity is the Charity Walk on Sunday 12th May, starting on Town Field’s, at 10am. This is being done to raise money for the Alzheimer’s Society. We did this last year raising about £3000 for those suffering from Parkinson’s disease.

Later in the year will be a sports day for people with Disabilities at Parklands Sports and social Club on Saturday 10th August. Many lions Clubs come together to organise this. People with disabilities of all ages are invited to take part in each of the activities organised by the clubs. A snack and drinks are also provided free to the participants. We realised how much this had been missed by those who had taken part in the past when it was organised again after Covid.

In September a Golf day takes place at Town Moor Golf Course, last year raising in excess of £4500. We raise money regularly by organising coffee mornings throughout the year.

Every penny we raise goes back into the community. We get requests, often through social workers, to help out with white goods and furniture. Young people apply for grants towards projects they want to take part in.

We run race nights and casino nights for organisations to help them raise funds for their projects. We are known mainly for taking Santa and his sleigh round the streets of the areas we cover. This takes place from the end of November to almost Christmas Eve. This year we raised over £7000, our best year yet.

We also organise a toy appeal collecting toys, which are then distributed, to children in the area. As a group we are always busy helping out where we are needed. Lions is an international Organisation originally set up to help the local community but it also gets involved in helping countries around the world.

GRANTS AVAILABLE FOR CHARITIES AND COMMUNITY GROUPS IN DONCASTER

Are you involved with a local charity or community group that is seeking funds?

Each year the Rotary Club of Doncaster St. George’s makes donations to local charities and community groups under its Community Grant Scheme. Applications are now being considered for Grants of up to £750. Over 100 charities have benefitted since the scheme’s inception including among many others within Doncaster, carers groups, Scout and Guide Groups, autism charities, counselling organisations, community libraries, the local branch of the Samaritans and conservation projects. In 2023 we were able to award grants totalling over £15000 to 21 different charities and groups.

If you would like an application form and/or information you can find them on the Club’s website www.doncasterstgeorges.org.uk or contact the grants coordinator Clive Smith by email to community.grants@doncasterstgeorges.org.uk

Applications open on 1st March 2024.

Hatfield Community Library

Technology is a wonderful thing when it is working or being used for legal purposes. For instance, writing my article on my laptop makes it easy to correct (if I spot a mistake!) and when finished, be able to email it to Karren at the Thorne Times or Julie at Hatfield Arrow. Both of whom do a wonderful job of inserting the photos which I send separately. (I cannot insert them on my ancient laptop). However, there is a downside as unscrupulous people can use the internet to con others

A friend of mine was recently nearly scammed when she tried to renew her driving licence on- line which made me think how easily it can be done.

There has been a lot information about scams on different TV programmes over the last few weeks. It is really scary to think how easily scammers can take unsuspecting people in with what seems to be a geunuine phone call, email or text. Some scammers pretend to be from your bank or Amazon or the Post Office. They all try to persuade people that they are about to lose money or even win money and they (the scammers) are going to help them. Part of the scam is to persuade the target to download a piece of software which is essential for them to help the person. What it actually does, is give them access to your phone or computer. BBC 2 have a very informative programme called “Scam Interceptors” ”and “ Morning Live” gives good advice about all sorts of things including scamming.

Whilst on the subject of computers, remember you can use our computers at the library free for 2 hours if you are a member of the library. It is best to avoid Thursdays as we have three Family History groups in during the day. We also print off many parcel labels for returned shopping items.

Saturday March 23rd, Coffee morning for friends of Hatfield Church Building Trust. Come to the library to support this group who raise money to keep our wonderful church building in good repair. There will be cakes and hot drinks to enjoy while chatting to friends. Pre-loved jewellery to buy for a gift for someone or even yourself. There will also be a tombola, a raffle and a chocolate tombola.

April Friday 5th Doncaster Councillors' surgery. If you have any pressing worries or concerns our local councillors who represent us on the City of Doncaster Council will be there to help you.

April Saturday 6th Dr Bike 10-2pm Bring your bicycle to the library for a check and repair session. Most repairs are done for free. These include inner tubes, brake pads, tyres, cables, chains, pedals and hand grips. Anything major such as wheels or cranks (whatever those are!) are not free.

Just turn up at the library as there is no need to book.

April Tuesday 23rd CPSO Drop-in. This is the opportunity to discuss local issues with our neighbourhood team.

April Thursday14th Lego Robotics. Ages 6 -12 There will be two sessions of this popular activity. Session 1 10:30-12:30 and Session 2 1:30- 3:300

This activity involves building a lego model and programming it to make it move and make sounds. It is enjoyed by children and adults alike. Booking is a must. Can we please ask people only to book if they intend to attend the session. As numbers are limited, we sometimes have to disappoint children by turning them away so it is disappointing for us and them if people who book don't turn up. I know that sometimes circumstances change or there may be an illness to prevent attendance so if possible can you please let us know, as another child could take that place.

There will be some other art/craft activities to be confirmed. Information will be on the library window, on posters or passed on from your local school.

Jigsaws and For sale books

We have a large collection of different sized jigsaws which we lend out. Pick one and take it home then bring it back when you have finished with it. We also have a good selection of fiction and non-fiction books for sale, for very reasonable prices. 4 paperbacks £1 and 2 hardbacks £1, buying books at a low price gives you the opportunity to try new authors without having to spend too much. Of course our library does give you the chance to do this for free.

Weekly and other groups.

We have a variety of activities in the library which encourage people to be creative, competitive (in a friendly way), have fun, make friends and keep fit in mind and body. If you are interested in any of the activities, come along to see what the groups are doing to find out if you would like to join in.

MONDAY - Wriggle, Rhyme and Storytime 10-11am (free) This session is an enjoyable one for lots of young children. The easy game is a bit like gin rummy then it can be played at a higher level if you want. The other players are always willing to help beginners. If there are other games that you would like to play, come along and start a group. Refreshments are provided for the small charge of £1. We have used some recent funding to replenish the games. Friends of Quarry Park

Our intrepid volunteers braved the atrocious weather on the morning of Friday 1st March for our latest tree planting session. We were successful in our application for free trees from the South Yorkshire Mayor’s Free Trees for Communities scheme in conjunction with TCV. As part of the mayor’s commitment to planting 1.4 million trees across the region, the scheme gives packs of trees to communities across South Yorkshire as part of his plan to make places cleaner, greener and better off.

Trees are not just a great way to take carbon out of our atmosphere and fight climate change, they also help to protect against flooding, promote biodiversity, and improve wellbeing. We received 250 saplings of different varieties, including Rowan, Hornbeam, Birch and Beech, along with Hawthorn, Dogwood and other hedging plants, which we planted in several areas around the park.

It was a very cold and wet morning, but our 16 heroic volunteers and Ranger Sam split into groups and worked hard to complete the planting in record time. Due to the inclement weather, and everyone being really cold by now (even Riley the dog was shivering in his jacket!) we decided against staying for refreshments. Julie and Debra handed out their homemade cakes for everyone to take home - Welsh cakes from Debra as it was St David’s Day, and allegedly the start of Spring!! Well done and thank you to everyone for turning out, at least we didn’t need to water the trees!!

Work parties are usually held on the first Friday of each month, weather permitting. There is always plenty of work to be done, including litter picking, clearing paths and cutting back vegetation. Equipment is provided but please ensure you wear suitable clothing and footwear. The next events are scheduled for Friday 5th April and Friday 3rd May 10am – 12 noon, meet at the Green Flag. Full details will be published on our Facebook page ‘Friends of Quarry Park’ or you can email us at thequarrypark@gmail.com or call us on 07546 595144.

DONCASTER CANCER DETECTION TRUST

April is such a lovely month. Clocks have moved forward to give us more daylight hours which inspires us to get out and about.

On that note have you thought about organising an event (or entering one) to fundraise on our behalf? We have printed T-shirts available and we can help with publicity. There are various events if you are active: half marathons are taking place in Birmingham, Sunday 5th May; Bristol on Sunday 19th May; Manchester on Sunday 26th May; London on Sunday 1st September; Great North Run, Newcastle on Sunday 8th September.

For something a little else energetic how about organising a quiz evening, a book or plant sale, be sponsored to lose weight (good incentive!) or abstaining from alcohol, smoking or junk food for a month…..or two!

And for adrenalin junkies, how about abseiling or skydiving or trying a zipwire? The possibilities are endless and you will be raising money for much-needed cancer-related equipment for our local hospitals.

If you fancy any of the above do get in touch with us. Our details are: 22 Wood Street, Doncaster DN1 3LW (entrance by the side of Kerry Gough Florists), first floor (lift available), Room 104. Tel. 01302 325029. Email: info@dcdt.co.uk Website: dcdt.co.uk. As the office is not fully manned it is best to Email or telephone in advance if you are thinking of coming to see us.

Don’t forget, we will help publicise your fundraising efforts beforehand and can include a write-up and photograph on our website afterwards. Big or small, everything you do will help. Just get in touch with us.

Travis St Lawrence go to space

In the afternoon of Thursday 7th March, our Y5 and Y6 children had the fantastic opportunity to attend a live webinar with the British Astronaut, Helen Sharman. Helen Patricia Sharman, CMG, OBE, Hon FRSC is a British chemist and astronaut who became the first British person, first Western European woman and first privately funded woman in space, as well as the first woman to visit the Mir space station, in May 1991. As part of their curriculum, they have been learning about space and the experiences of living in space. We were so excited to see Helen’s face on the screen and to be part of this webinar.

Helen shared with the children what daily life was like for her whilst she was aboard the International Space Station and what her job entailed. Children were able to ask questions and she responded to a question from one of our Y5 pupils. He asked ‘Were you able to bring any artefacts back from space?’ Helen told the children about the space suits and books she brought back. She explained about her career and that ‘she got to see the sun rise and set 16 times a day!’ and that ‘she never dreamed she would get to be an astronaut and go into space when she was like us, at school’.

The children thoroughly enjoyed the experience and were excited to report what they had discovered.
