Summer Fun at Thorne Camera Club The new Photography Course for Beginners and Improving Photographers will begin on the revised date of July 29th, at 10 am – 12 noon in Room 5 of the Methodist Church on King Street. There are one or two places left so there is still time to book your place. The fee for the 5 week course is still only £25.00. Contact David on 07463821182 or email thornecameraclub@yahoo.co.uk The earlier course was enjoyed by all those attending, and they are putting their new found skills to good use. The summer is the time of year when members of Thorne Camera Club tend to go on both arranged photo opportunities and on their own, or with friends, capturing images in a huge variety of settings. These can then be used to enter competitions over the rest of the year’s programme or perhaps those of other clubs, salons or open competitions etc. Many such excursions result in images which add to the individual collections of members and might be printed and displayed at home. In the recent Seascape competition the numerous entries, judged by Colin Lusby LRPS from Grimsby, were of a high standard. Jean Goodburne an d John Marshall LRPS did very well in both the theme and the open sections with several members highly commended for their prints. Upcoming events include a canal trip which on previous occasions has been very well received and provides members with the chance to take photographs of subjects such as landscapes, nature and industrial architecture as well as life on the canal such as narrow boats, locks, angling, pleasure cruisers and all the people associated with these activities. Later in July and into August, trips are planned for Walker’s Nurseries Ornamental Garden in Blaxton and the steelworks at Scunthorpe. By the end of August the club will then be planning to start the autumn programme for this year. Thorne Camera Club continues to grow and develop the skills of its members but we cannot rest on our laurels. We are always looking to encourage new members to join and for existing members to take an active role in suggesting new ideas and new departures for the club. All levels of ability are catered for, from beginner to expert. Anyone interested should contact our Chairman or Vice-Chairman and come along to a meeting, you will be made very welcome.

Community News HATFIELD WOODHOUSE AMATEUR GARDENING SOCIETY On Tuesday July 4 the Society’s guest speaker was Jeanette Merillan whose subject was “Calendar of Colour”. Jeanette, who has appeared on TV, had made the relatively long journey from Skegness to be with us. As the title implies, Jeanette took us through the whole of the gardening year with all its colour changes from January to December. She told us about the plants which provided the colours, both with their flowers and their foliage. Once again we had an extremely good presentation from an accomplished gardener and speaker. The Society’s annual trip this year is on Tuesday 1 August, so there will be no indoor meeting at Hatfield Club in August. The outing is to the Wold’s Way Lavender Garden at Wintringham near Malton, and a visit to Stella Exley’s new nursery at Alne. In September we will be back to our normal programme, and on Tuesday 5 September we again welcome Meryl White with “Afternoon Tea”. This will be one of our occasional non gardening talks, and if it is half as good as last time Meryl visited us, we are in for a treat. As usual the meeting will be at Hatfield Club commencing at 7-30pm and everybody is welcome. And on Saturday 9 September we will be holding our Autumn Show at the Club, doors open to the public at 2pm.
Kingswood 2017 When arriving at Kingswood, we were greeted by our group leader, Denny. He gave us a site tour to prevent us getting lost and he also entertained us simultaneously. Our different group leaders were funny whilst also being responsible. They taught us how to put on a harness and helmet to keep us secure when doing exhilarating activities: the wobbly pole of the leap of faith; the super speedy zip line and the towering abseiling. We had no regrets doing every activity in our way as they were very fun and challenging. There were also evening activities which were just as fun. The first night of our stay we had campfire, one of many fun evenings. Every day, we were always excited for our food as it was delicious. It was enough to keep us going every day. Some of our favourite activities were laser tag, leap of faith and high ropes. They were very fun and exhilarating as most of us hadn’t done them before. Also some people did new things and conquered their fears. All of us did something we wanted to do which is why we think Kingswood is a place worth going. We enjoyed our stay and would be delighted to return. By Charlie Poncia, Harry Macefield and Josh Platt

Hatfield Town Cricket Club It continues to be a busy season at Hatfield Town CC with all the sides being in action over recent weeks. In one weekend we even fielded 7 senior sides in 5 days, including putting 3 full sides out on one Sunday to fulfil all our fixtures, which is a major achievement these days. The 1st XI had some positive results against South Kirkby and Hooton Pagnell in the league before slipping up against West Bretton and Rossington before getting back on track with convincing wins against Old Sharlston and Askern. In the cup we repeated our success against Pagnell in equally convincing style then avenged the league defeat by West Bretton with a great away win and now host unbeaten league leaders Streethouse in the semi-final. An increasingly youthful 2nd XI have picked up some impressive wins, beating Netherton, Garforth, Sykehouse and Ferrybridge1st XI's in convincing fashion and are now sitting comfortably in mid-table and hoping to push on further. It has been a quiet few weeks for the Sunday XI who have only had two fixtures; a much depleted side travelled to Barnsley CC and were soundly beaten before hosting Glasshoughton and coming out on top after a powerful all round performance. The Evening league side have had a mixed few weeks due to weather cancellations and also sit mid-table after some mixed results, the highlight being a nail-biting one run success over Goole Town. The Junior section continues to prosper and all 3 sides have put in performances that really bode well for the future. There are definitely some senior players of the future in the teams! The Friday night junior training session are more popular than ever, with the field flooded with children we now wish we'd entered more than one Under 9 team as we have so many attending. We'll be trying to arrange some friendlies to make sure they all get some game time. Our ECB Allstars Scheme for 5-8 year olds is now well underway under-way the kids have taken to it with real enthusiasm. This club update can't pass without mention of the Spring Bank Holiday Rounders Tournament which made headline news on the RoundersEngland website. The day was a massive success, with teams of mixed age and genders competing against each other and being supported by many from the village. Everyone went home happy and in good spirits and it was a great fund raiser for the club, once again showing what an integral part of the community we are becoming. You can follow us on Twitter and Facebook or at http://hatfieldtowncricket.co.uk/ if you'd like to keep in touch with our latest news.

Hatfield Community Library Our Family History groups have been following up on their success investigating the Hatfield fallen in WW1 by researching those brave men from Hatfield who died during the WW2. Again, each person chose a name to research. This time the task was harder as there are not so many records available for WW2. They also included men from the RAF and Navy. One of the most well-known soldiers is John William Harper who received a VC and is commemorated by a stained glass in St Lawrence’s Church Hatfield. Many of the soldiers attended the local Hatfield Woodhouse school. Less information is known about civilian casualties but the group were pleased to have two Hatfield Woodhouse residents recognised and added to the list of civilian fallen. Retired farmer Henry and his wife Annie Wraith died when a plane crashed onto their bungalow. The pilot, Llewellyn Linlater and a passing airman cyclist also died. HTC Mayor, Pat Sanderson, came in to present the Family History groups with a cheque for £300 towards the cost of producing the research in booklet form. The summer holidays are nearly upon us and Hatfield Community Library has lots of free activities to offer children of all ages. Hatfield Woodhouse Primary School By: Lois, Evie, Lily, Emily, Alex, Madison and Albie. Hello, welcome back to Hatfield Woodhouse Primary. We have all been working very hard on all our work and have progressed with the help of our brilliant teachers. Here are some things that have been going on in this superb, special school! London A couple of days ago, year 6 went on a fantastic trip to London. It all started on a hot Wednesday morning at 7:45am at the Doncaster Train Station. The journey took one and a half hours; we played many games. After that, we arrived at the London train station and went on the tube to the Houses of Parliament. We saw brilliant Big Ben. In the Houses of Parliament we saw Jeremy Corbyn and Theresa May doing Question Time. There were guards on horses for the Horse guard parade. We ate at a pub, which was called Weatherspoons, and had scrumptious meals. We went souvenir shopping, which was lots of fun as we bought lots of things. We walked down the park and saw a black car with lots of security around it. We went to Buckingham palace and we got a picture in front of the palace gates. We walked to the underground and then we went back on the train. But the air conditioning had stopped working, in the middle of the journey. It was so hot! Here are some quotes about London, “It was thrilling, I loved it!” and “It was a once in a lifetime opportunity!” Sports day This year on Sports Day, KS2 did a number of sports such as Hurdles, Sprints, Long Jump, Shotput, Javelin, Bean Bag Throw, Long Distance Running and Relay Race. It was a very exciting event, full of enjoyment and thrill. We had many races and sporting activities that resulted in much amusement to the adults and children. Johnson, Blake and Warrick were the teams, but Johnson were victorious in the end. One Year 6 boy said, “I won two races – the hurdles and the half lap. I was on Johnson and I tried my hardest. It was a difficult competition but I had lots of fun.” Also a Year 5 boy said, “I won all the races that I did and I am very proud of myself. I am pleased that I was on Johnson, as we won. Everybody tried super hard and the school should be extremely proud.” KS1 had a different sports day in the morning of Thursday. They did sack races, running, egg and spoon race, relay race and other exciting things. One child in FS2 said, “I enjoyed the sack racing, as I came 1st and I also enjoyed the running.” Another said, “I loved sports day, but it was really hot. It was still awesome though!” Music Concert A couple of weeks ago we had a fantastic music concert, which included guitars and violins. There were also some super soloists, who played music that varied from exciting to classical. One violinist said, “It was very enjoyable playing the violin in front of a mini crowd. I was a bit nervous but at the end, I was very proud of myself.” One person in the audience stated, “I enjoyed the guitars and the violins but mostly the violins because they made a sweet sound.” It has shown the terrific talent of some of the pupils at Hatfield Woodhouse Primary School. Bunnies As we said in the last Arrow, our school has received two brilliant bunnies that are kept just outside the library, in a large colourful hut with water and food. They are called Unicorn and Willow and are growing up very quickly, but they are very adorable still!!!

‘All about Donny’
was an entirely new adventure for the Woodhouse Players being an entirely home grown and imaginative concept written by and performed by local people. Only the music was written by others but performed by local very talented musician’s pianist Eileen and drummer Neil. The juxtaposition of the music to the sketches was well chosen adding to the story rather than distracting for example the little song ‘ I know I can’ added to the light hearted illustration of the role of the railway in the history of Doncaster. Rob read a story of a valiant little train trying to climb hill being refused help by the bigger trains only to be assisted by a much smaller train to reach the top. The idea of having actors wearing little trains similar to Rod Hull’s emu was brilliantly funny made even funnier by the realistic way Mathew Allen tried to drive his train up the hill. Another sketch that stays in the memory is the chorus on an outing to the races on ‘The Donny Opening Day’ you can guess which music that was sung to with no apologies to ‘My Fair Lady’. Again the set was fantastically imaginative with the view of the jockey’s heads racing across the back of the set behind a fence of grass. Philip a young man dressed as a very tall polar bear sang and danced wildly and enthusiastically ‘The Bare Necessities of Life with a rotund bear who was clearly getting all his bare necessities, a tribute to the Yorkshire Wildlife Park. The Robin Hood Airport sequence was an hilarious tribute to the ‘Full Monty’ I wonder if I dare start the dole queue dance at the next passport control. This was a light hearted follow on to a beautiful tribute to the fliers from Lindholme ‘Coming in on a Wing and a Prayer’ and evocative song sang with meaning by the chorus joined in by the majority of the audience. As well as the highlights there were a couple of sketches that didn’t quite hit the mark for me ‘What did the Romans ever do for us’ I think you have to be Monty Python to perform that sketch. The prison sequence again did not live up to the original Ronnie Barkers ‘Porridge’ which in my opinion means the players were at their best trusting their own imaginations Finally a sequence that moved the whole audience was the ‘miners’ and here the Phoenix got it spot on. The sketch started with ‘Off to Work We Go’ with a gang of miners turning up out of the audience very upbeat and the audience joined in clapping in time to the song. Then came a sequence that was about the past but very relevant to today ‘The March of the Angry Men’ FUNERAL DIRECTORS to a video backdrop of the miners strike. The chorus sang this song and believed every word the A Family Business Giving crescendo coinciding with the head gear falling I was not the only one with tears in my eyes not A Personal & Caring Service only for that past era but for today’s tragedies of the burnt out shell of Grenfall Tower. PRE-PAID FUNERAL PLANS I cannot finish this review without a mention of the tea which was up to Betty’s of York standard and served at the winner of the St Leger speed covering all areas well done to the cast/ tea party workers hope you do it again. The audience were energised and enlivened by the verve and skill of the production which chose old and modern music to sing with talent and enthusiasm. Oh and a final well done to the makers of the sets which would not have been shown to best advantage without the hard work of the nearly invisible set shifter.
