Community News Friends of Quarry Park At our AGM on 26th June 1 new member was voted on to the committee with the previous members wishing to remain. In July our Work Party was held on Sat 6th for a change but we’ll be back to the normal 1st Friday of every month until later in the year. There were 6 volunteers and 2 DMBC staff helping to clear one of the heathland areas in Warren Plantation by removing ground cover and previously cut wood thinning’s and the weeds were cleared on the steps at the Greens Road Park entrance (see the ‘before and after’ photo’s) in honour of the Keep Britain Tidy Love Parks Week 12-21st July. Check out our Facebook page @FriendsofQuarryPark in case you are on there? Our next Work Party will be on Fri 2nd Aug, why not come along, get some exercise and fresh air, have a chat and a cuppa and biscuit or two at half time, you’ll feel loads better for it! Meet at 10am at the Green Flagpole where we hope to be raising a new 2019/20 flag sometime soon if we’ve met the criteria again, fingers crossed! Email thequarrypark@gmail.com to let us know if you’d like to join us....
HATFIELD WOODHOUSE AMATEUR GARDENING SOCIETY The meeting on Tuesday 2 July at Hatfield Woodhouse Club featured Tom Dixon as our speaker. His subject was “The Sweet 50’s, a Story of Liquorice”. As implied in the title, this was a story of how liquorice was made in times past. Tom talked about the old processes, interspersing his talk with a host of funny stories. Our President, John Brown, was called upon to read a couple of poems which gloried the effect which one might have to endure if too much liquorice is eaten in one go. The talk was illustrated by photographs taken during the time he was referring to. We had a very entertain evening , courtesy of Tom Dixon. August is the month when there is no indoor meeting. Instead we will be having our Annual Trip, this year to the “Breezy Knees Gardens and Nursery”. At the time of writing, there were still a few places available on the coach, so if you would like to join us, please contact John Brown.

HOLIDAY TIME FOR THORNE CAMERA CLUB The Camera Club is now well into its Summer programme with outings and photo shoots as well as holidays. Looking forward to Thorne Summer Festival, the Camera Club will be holding a free Exhibition of members’ work. The Exhibition Organiser, says, ‘ Come and visit our compact display of photographs by members of the Club, ranging from landscapes to seascapes, people, wildlife, flowers and many more topics. There will be over 70 images on show over two days enabling work from many members to be displayed. Members will be on hand throughout the exhibition to discuss the images, answer questions and also encourage anyone interested in Photography to join the Club and its activities.’ So why not go along and have a look at what they have been doing, and chat to members about the photos. You will be very welcome. As a bit of light relief at the end of the Spring Programme, the final projected image competition was Open only, with X-Factor judging, a panel of four members, as it suggests. Each judge, in this case, Jackie Woodward, Mike Donnison, Graham Linley and Terry Lockwood, gave a mark to each image, which, added together, gave the final score. The winning images were: Michael Farrand’s ‘By the Canal’ first, ‘St Mark’s Fly’ by Bill Mitchell second, also third with ‘Oak Leaves and Marble Gall’. Highly Commended was ‘Roseberry Topping’ by Terry Gunnill. The Chairman commented on the high standard of all images entered. This was followed by a small finger buffet and drinks to celebrate the end of another successful season, thanks to those helping out in the kitchen. Then, some exhibition winning images from around the world from the Yorkshire Photographic Union, were shown by chief projectionist, David Ulyett. The Summer School got off to a good start with all students attending the first session held in the Memorial Park in Thorne. Here they put into practice lessons learned regarding aperture setting and depth of field. The second session was rained off, and the class was forced to seek refuge in the Punch Bowl Inn where there was a warm welcome and chance to at least talk about the main points of the session. Other venues included St. Nicholas Church and Thorne town centre. A special invitation was received to a private photo shoot in the Old Rectory at Epworth, former home of the Wesley family. It was John Wesley and his brother, Charles, who founded Methodism here in Epworth, and then carried the word around the world. The Old Rectory, a beautiful Queen Anne style building, is decorated and furnished in the style the Wesley brothers would have been familiar with, as it was the home of their parents Samuel and Susanna Wesley and the remaining seven children. If you are interested in the Camera Club, please visit the Exhibition at the Summer fair.

Hatfield Community Library News Item August 2019 I have had a wonderful time going round the schools and telling the children about the events in the library. I even had the chance to sing in assembly which brought back happy memories. The behaviour was very good, especially as I had quite a lot to say with all the events we have on at the library. Visitors to the library will notice that the car park has been cleared of the weeds which were threatening to take it over. Thanks to Dave aka “The Weed Buster” and a later visit from DMBC gardeners. The front part is yet to be done. We had been trying for weeks to find a gardener but I must say there were some very pretty weeds adorning the edges of the car park. Some of our usual events will continue through the holidays. COMPUTER HELP. If you need to use a computer, laptop or other devices we are still offering free help at the library on Wednesday mornings. Yoga There are some sessions in August but ring to check if you want to come along. Bridge Club and Games Café on Mon pm and Tues am respectively will continue unless it is bank holiday. Needles and Pins will also continue. You may still have time to book for our Drama event: DRAMA EVENT. MISTAKEN IDENTITY. Saturday July 27th. We are really looking forward to our Drama Event as all previous events have been very entertaining. This time the emphasis will be on comedy and mistaken identity. The evening will be in two parts with refreshments in-between. Part one will consist of a variety of scenes from The Government Inspector, A Comedy of Errors, Tartuffe, The Merchant of Venice and Pygmalion. The second part will be a one act French farce -The Music Lovers. The cost of all this is only £5. If any of you remember the last performance and the lovely sandwiches, you will want to come to this performance. We cannot supply alcohol, but you can bring your own if you wish. Tea and coffee will be available. Booking open now. Some also have an age limit but most can be done with adult help. You can bring younger children along as we have plenty of toys for them to play with. Events are open for booking now. Nearly all events will have refreshments available. We do ask for a contribution towards them as the activities themselves are free. The activities are all expensive to put on but thanks to donors we can provide them for no cost to you. If you are unable to come, please let us know so somebody else can have that slot. Sadly, we do have people who book and do not turn up. The Poetry Reading Evening idea has generated some interest. If there are any poets who have written their own poems or if you would like to read out your favourite poem, please contact us Tel.
