HATFIELD WOODHOUSE AMATEUR GARDENING SOCIETY Despite the gradual removal of COVID19 restrictions the committee have decided to cancel this year’s Autumn Show which was scheduled for Saturday 12 September. This is a great disappointment for us, but it was felt that the majority of our members and usual entrants to the various classes in the Show would feel the same. To any of you who were optimistic that we would be able to continue as usual, our apologies, but we thought that an early decision was preferable to waiting until nearer the scheduled Show Date, rather than cancelling at the last minute. However, please keep hold of your Autumn 2020 Schedule, because it will become the Autumn 2021 Schedule. The meeting fixed for Tuesday 1 September has also been cancelled. We will keep you up to date on when the Club will start the Autumn season. Watch this space! We are assuming that the 2021 Spring Show will go ahead in March 2021 so the date has been fixed for Saturday 13 March 2021.

Boston Park Farm reopens….. We are pleased to announce the reopening of the farm and outdoor play areas as of 5th July for pre-booked tickets only. The tea room has also opened for take-out options from a limited menu to begin with. Due to current covid-19 restrictions all indoor play areas are closed, but at Boston Park Farm we are still a traditional working farm, our animal trail allows children to get up close with a wide range of farm animals. You can pet and feed most of the animals and every day we have animal handling sessions. The whole experience is geared to suit children up to around 10 years old. We have the fabulous Maize Maze to explore, outdoor play equipment, mud kitchens and the bale pyramid. Make sure you visit our Tractor Track and race around on our brandnew go karts! You and your child can have hours of fun exploring everything we have to offer here at the farm. Remember to ensure our visitor numbers remain at the right level and keep everyone safe you MUST pre-book your tickets via our website: www.bostonpark.com

Hatfield Community Library Whilst the library is not opening in the immediate future, we are hoping that this might happen sometime in the latter part of this year. (Hopefully August) It will of course depend on several things. We need to complete all the safety checks and make sure that the library environment is as safe as it can be for volunteers and borrowers. We need to adhere to all the government and DMBC regulations and have permission to open. The initial service will be very limited as we will be open for fewer hours and be operating a “click and collect” system. A bit like internet shopping except borrowers can ring or email to request books only from our library. We will then contact you to arrange a time for you to collect your book/s. People will not be allowed in the library to browse or use the computers until the next stage is approved. We are really looking forward to being a part of the community again and some volunteers are ready to come back. PLEASE DO NOT COME TO THE LIBRARY WHEN WE RE-OPEN UNLESS YOU HAVE RUNG TO BOOK A TIME SLOT. This is for your own protection and for the protection of the volunteers. We hope we will be able to welcome you into the library properly at some point. The library has had another bit of good news. The Hatfield Village Plan has donated £600 to the library. We are very grateful for this especially as with a lot of businesses, we have not been able to create any income. This will be used to help us to provide our usual range of activities when circumstances allow. I am especially pleased about this donation as I was part of that group. A donation has also been made to The Friends of Jubilee field which will help to keep Jubilee a pleasant place to walk for everyone. I have to say that my (nearly) daily walks round Jubilee have helped to keep me sane in the days of lockdown and restrictions. I have watched and marvelled at the seasonal changes in wild flowers and the trees from March through to now. I have also seen some of the people responsible for litter picking and looking after the newly planted trees and what a wonderful job they have been doing. Sadly, some visitors to the field have left a lot of litter lying about even though there are waste bins around but thanks to the volunteers (and collections by the council) we can enjoy a mostly litter free walk. I would like to give a personal thanks to the person who measured the distance around the perimeter of Jubilee field (or Jubo as I have heard some young people refer to it). I often wondered how far I had walked as I plodded round. I once tried counting steps but lost it after 3000. These days I have a problem remembering how many laps I have done and that’s with a maximum of five! On the days I have not been able to walk round Jubilee, (sore toes) I have walked at home following the YouTube programme “Walk at Home.” Not as scenic but a good workout with several types of “walks” from which to choose. I will add the information about the Flat Roofs, Repairs, Slates, Tiles, Digital Library again for those of you with the Guttering, Fascia’s, Chimneys. technology to use it. You will need your library card number (no spaces) and your pin number. Competitive Rates Online resources have increased and in some cases No Job Too Small been extended temporarily for use from home. See DMBC Libraries web page at: 01302 858164 http s://library.doncaster .gov.uk/web/arena/a-z07427 212714 eresources The latest addition RBDigital which launched th 29 April for eMagazines, eComics and eNewspapers Sj-roofing@mail.com has been greatly received by library members with 626 magazines, 81 comics and being downloaded so far. By the end of this week OverDrive eBooks and eAudio books will launch giving additional choice of titles to Borrowbox for our readers. These online services will play a major part of our recovery whilst we adjust to a ‘new normal’ way of providing a library service in Doncaster. These services also include the use of ‘Find My Past’ and Ancestry,’ if you want to trace your ancestors. I have heard from some users who could not access these two family history sites recently. I am enquiring into this matter. Also a reminder that no fines will imposed for overdue books. I have three which should have been returned weeks ago. Well that is all for now. Keep reading, keep well and stay safe.

Bags of Creativity for Doncaster’s Children and Young People this Summer A new partnership will deliver bags packed with creative activities and inspiring materials to over 1200 vulnerable children and young people in Doncaster this Summer. IVE, the Bridge Organisation for Yorkshire and the Humber, is working with Doncaster Cultural Education Partnership (DCEP) and Doncaster Children’s Services Trust to deliver Bags of Creativity. The bags are designed to make sure all children and young people can be creative at home by providing everything they need in one place. DCEP has recruited a team of 20 local creative practitioners and organisations to design activities for Bags of Creativity. Artists selected include illustrator Ed Syder, Talegate theatre, Angie Hardwick, Buglight Theatre, Mariam Shah and Anna Bean. Child development specialists, Dr Karen Dunn and Di Chilvers, have given training and mentoring to the team to ensure activities are tailored to the contents of the bags and engaging for children in each age range. DCEP is working directly with Doncaster Children’s Services Trust to distribute the bags to vulnerable children via trusted adults including social workers and foster carers. Bags of Creativity, containing 20 specially designed activity postcards, have been created for three separate age groups. For 2-6 year-olds, an orange bag contains vibrant chiffon scarves, a space blanket, and many other materials to enhance imaginative play. 7-11 year-olds will receive a bright green bag full of colouring pencils, pipe cleaners and further tactile materials for creative expression. 12-16 year-olds will receive a navy blue bag with contents including watercolour paints and modelling clay, giving them additional ways to explore their creativity. LazenbyBrown of York designed the Bags of Creativity free of charge. Helen Jones, Joint Chair of DCEP said: “We’re thrilled with the response to Bags of Creativity from creative practitioners and organisations in our area. We’re very happy to be working in partnership with Doncaster Children’s Services Trust this summer to ensure that these resources reach the children who need them most.”

Thorne Camera Club Out ‘n’ About Again Although still meeting according to the rules and regulations, Club members are out with their cameras again. In small groups, up to six members, socially distancing, visits have been made to Thorne Community Wood, the Delves, Rawcliffe Sugar Ponds, Goole Docks and other places locally. It is a relief to feel things getting back to more normal, and chatting to people not seen for a couple of months. The first outing, suggested by Bill, one of the founder members of the club, who felt the lockdown had gone on long enough and, with easing, was the ideal opportunity. The walk was a great success, the weather was good, there was lots of wildlife and nature to photograph and lots of stories to tell. Four gents and two ladies formed the group, all keen photographers, all keeping their distance but helping each other get the shots. The Delves, a lovely, tranquil place, is very relaxing, as being by water often is. It was good to see so many fishermen out, and youngsters learning from Dad as Mum kept a watchful eye on her offspring ( no big splashes to disturb the fish!). The fish in the ponds are getting to be a fine size, and one beginner was proud to show his first catch before returning it safely to the water ( after having his photo taken, of course ). Rawclifffe Sugar Ponds is a place where more unusual things can be seen, like great crested grebe carrying their young, and toads mating. The former were shy and kept their distance while the latter couldn’t care less and ignored their audience totally. Now the bridge is finally finished and open to traffic again, it is easier to get there, and well signed. The visit to Goole Docks was less enjoyable as the weather was colder, damper, and the docks almost empty, just one ship being loaded with scrap metal. The footpath through the docks seems to get shorter every year, but the view from the lock gates of Ocean Lock out to the River Ouse never fails to impress.
Even in these unprecedented times, Thorne Camera Club continues to attract new members, with enquiries and people joining the group. The online video conferencing has continued under Mike’s leadership, and the facebook group too, although everyone is eager for the time when meetings can start again. When this will be remains very uncertain at the moment. Until then, members keep in touch, meet up when they can, and continue indoors and out with this great hobby of ours.
