HATFIELD WOODHOUSE AMATEUR GARDENING SOCIETY The Society was back to normal with a meeting on Tuesday 5 July after missing June because of the outing to Burton Agnes. Our guest speaker on the evening was Rachel Barrowcliffe, who is a professional consultant gardener of over 30 years standing. Rachel has been the Gardener and Adviser at Hodstock Hall over those 30 years, and has other projects running as well. The subject of her presentation to us was “Summer Gardens”. Rachel presentation was based on how to plant up and keep a nice garden, starting off with keeping the soil in good condition by the annual addition of compost, leaf mould or other soil conditioners. Treating the soil in this way provides nutrients and water retaining properties, which means that artificial feeding can be minimised. This was followed by information about which plants and shrubs might be appropriate for individual gardens. We had a lot of information about keeping pests under control now that many of the chemicals used in the past are no longer available. The use of nematodes which target the particular pest in question was highly recommended. Times for pruning, cutting back, and taking cuttings were also discussed. Rachel gave us a large amount of information during the presentation, and there were questions and comments from the floor as we went along. The large turnout thoroughly enjoyed Rachel’s talk which was well presented and illustrated. In a change from our usual pattern of Tuesday evening meetings, the next event will be on Tuesday 2 August. On this occasion the speaker will be Graham Elliot from the Mires Beck Nursery in North Cave. As usual we will meet at Hatfield Woodhouse Club staring at 730pm. Everybody is welcome, both members and non members alike.

Friends of Quarry Park We had another great turnout for our Volunteer Work Party on Friday 1st July. Rain had been forecast but it was a beautiful morning with lots of sunshine. There were 12 volunteers in total along with our DMBC Rangers. We were joined by 4 rangers to begin with, two came first thing to remove an unsafe tree from the woods which was a potential hazard before going on to another job. The remaining two put up our new bird box which had been donated to the Friends by Natural England. It’s unlikely we will get any birds in the box for a while but hopefully they will be checking it out over the coming months and with a bit of luck we’ll get some nesting birds in there! A small army of litter pickers did a great job collecting four big bags of rubbish and a large reel of wire. We all enjoyed a well-deserved break for refreshments, which included delicious gingerbread supplied by Debra. We really look forward to seeing what sweet treats she brings along each month!! We then continued the cutting back of overgrown vegetation around the car park, removing dead branches, and general tidying up around benches and sign boards. Another successful morning’s work by everyone. There are a couple of events taking place over the coming weeks - The Orienteering Event, in conjunction with DMBC Rangers, will take place on the park on Monday 8th August 11am-1pm. And possibly a Mumblers’ School Holiday Trail. Further details will be published on our Facebook page in due course. Work parties are usually held on the first Friday of each month, weather permitting. There is always plenty of work to be done, from litter picking, clearing paths and cutting back vegetation. Equipment is provided but please ensure you wear suitable clothing and footwear. The next events are scheduled for Friday 5th August and Friday 2nd September at 10am – 12 noon, meet at the Green Flag. Full details will be published on our Facebook page ‘Friends of Quarry Park’ or you can email us at thequarrypark@gmail.com or call us on 07546 595144.

Hello and welcome to a summer crime prevention article. Hopefully the weather will be even sunnier and warmer in the coming months and we can take advantage and spend more time outside. While you are outside in your garden, you want to make sure that unwanted visitors do not get into your house. You may leave windows and doors open to let any fresh air circulate your home if it becomes too hot, but sadly, thieves are looking for opportunities like that. The old saying ‘An open window or door is an invitation to a thief’ is still relevant. Never sit in the back garden with your front door unlocked. In fact, always keep your front door unlocked even when you are in the house. Do not leave ground floor windows or other easily accessible windows open in a room if you or someone else in your family is not in that room. Always shut and lock windows if you leave a room. Do not leave any articles on a windowsill in a room especially car or house keys even if you or someone else is in that room. If you are enjoying the rear garden and everyone is sat outside, always make sure you can see if anyone enters your house by the back door. We have had thieves sneak into houses via the back door even when families are enjoying a barbecue out in the garden. When some people go on holiday, they post pictures on social media of them enjoying themselves socialising or admiring the scenery. Be careful about broadcasting that your house is empty. Personally, I would rather share pictures of my holiday when I have returned home. It may lose the impact but it does not advertise the fact that I am away from home. Always ask a member of your family or a trusted neighbour to keep an eye on your house if you go away. They can put out and return your bin if necessary and very importantly move any parcel that may have arrived by Courier delivery and been left by your front door. If you are expecting a parcel delivery, consider redirecting it to a local collection hub or to your trusted neighbour. That reduces the danger of leaving a parcel on open display to any passing thief. If you are tidying up your garden and using power or hand tools, do not leave them unattended in your front garden. If you take a break and go into the house or rear garden, do not leave the tools in the front garden. Thieves can and have simply walked off with lawnmowers and expensive hedge trimmers. Thieves can also use hand tools to gain entry to your property. A garden spade makes an ideal crowbar and they have been used in the past to smash glass and force open doors and windows. You can enjoy the summer and relax without the worry of crime by taking a few simple precautions. THORNE CAMERA CLUB

The Viking Festival got our Summer Outing programme got off to an excellent start with fine and sunny conditions. The festival, centred in Parliament Street and St Sampson's Square, had the Vikings at their stalls or circulating with the general public only too eager to be photographed either with a smile or a frightening growl. The highlight of the day was the march through York to Castle museum where the re-enactment battles took place. A good day was had by the members with many photographic opportunities providing images for our future competitions. For those who like fresh air and sea breezes our visit to Bempton Cliffs provided just that. Bempton Cliffs is a RSPB nature reserve and is home to nearly 500,000 sea birds all nesting on ledges on the cliffs. It was very busy at the viewing points where visitors gathered to see the lone Albatross, but was not seen although it had been aro und rec entl y. An excellent day ended with a short trip to Flamborough for fish and chips before the drive home. Do not forget the remainder of our Summer Outings:1. 27th July Yorkshire Sculpture Park – Wakefield. A fine collection of sculptures by world wide renown artist including Henry Moore and Barbara Hepworth. Meet in the car park at 10.00am. Postcode WF4 4JX. 2. 10th August The Yorkshire Air Museum – Elvington. A collection of aircraft covering over a hundred years of aviation. Meet in the car park 10.00am. Postcode YO41 4AU. 3. 5th September - Autumn Social Evening Meet at the Punch Bowl at 7.00pm for an enjoyable evening for members and to welcome all prospective new members. Our exhibition at Thorne Library was very much appreciated by all those visiting the Library to view the outstanding photographs presented by our members. The Club wishes to thank the Library, TMCR and all the shops that displayed our posters promoting the exhibition. We welcome every one interested in photography of whatever experience to join us on Monday evenings at 7.15 pm at the Methodist Chapel Hall.
