Community News Local Crime Reduction Since the 1st of January 2016, over sixty burglaries have occurred in Doncaster where car ignition keys were stolen. In the majority of these burglaries, the corresponding motor vehicle was also taken at the same time. The type and quality of security devices fitted to many motor vehicles means that relatively few vehicles can be stolen without a key; necessitating in most cases, the key to be stolen in order to steal the vehicle. Some thieves will take car keys, which are found during a burglary and take the vehicle to take themselves and the stolen property from the scene. Others will target the house after seeing a desirable motor vehicle parked at a house. The common thread during these burglaries is that in all cases, the keys are easily found as they are usually left on open display. In some cases, vehicle keys left on a table inside the front door have been stolen by reaching through the letter box using a pole or similar with a hook on the end. The main prevention technique is to take your keys to bed with you. Do not leave car keys on a table inside the door on the kitchen work surface. The belief that offenders will come into the bedroom to steal keys is not one supported by statistics. There is only one report of this happening and the vehicle in question was a Supercar valued at over £300,000. Secure your house to reduce the chances of becoming a victim of burglary. If your doors have Euro profile cylinder locks that are more than two years old, change the locks for ones that comply with Security standard SS312 or TS007 3 star. Further information on these types of lock can be found via your local Master locksmiths or on their website at http://www.locksmiths.co.uk/faq/lock-snapping-most-secure-lock-cylinder/ Burglary prevention advice can be found on the South Yorkshire police website at http://www.southyorkshire.police.uk/sites/default/files/4-9-14%20Janes%20approved%20artwork.pdf If the thief steals the car using the ignition keys, that also means the alarm system and immobiliser are inoperative. Consider fitting a tracking device to your vehicle or a separate physical security device.

Community News Hatfield Community Library The cold weather seems to have caught up with us at last. But the volunteers in the library have no need to worry about it as we are as warm as if it were a really hot summer’s day! So if you want to keep warm, browse the books or just have a coffee and read the papers come and join us. You may have noticed there have been some changes to the opening times of the library. As the nights are getting darker earlier, the library is hardly being used after 4pm so we are closing at 4pm on Monday, Tuesday and Friday. The new opening time will be 10am- 4pm on those days. On Thursday we are open 10am- 5pm as there is a Beginners’ Family History group running later in the afternoon so you are welcome to use the library as usual. Wednesday and Saturday opening times will remain the same. The Lego Robotics was a big success with the 7-9yr old group. (And with my 4 year old grandson). Some children enjoyed it so much they came back for the afternoon session. I was my grandson’s assistant and learned so much helping him to programme his Lego model as well as getting to spend some time with him. This activity is excellent for children and adults alike. The Library Service no longer subscribes to Overdrive-one of their on-line borrowing services but there are alternative sites from which to borrow e-books. Borrowbox and the Cloud Library have apps which can be downloaded onto a Kindle Fire. The library service is still transferring books from Overdrive to the Borrowbox site but there are a lot of books in the Cloud library. I know! I keep looking up into the sky to see if I can see any books up there! However, I don’t think the cloud is as romantic as that-it’s just a big computer somewhere. The links for this are on the DMBC digital library and apps page or you could try these links. http://www.borrowbox.com/kindlefire/install/fire/ http://www.yourcloudlibrary.com/index.php/en-us/get-the-app/kindle-fire Activities at your library Monday, Rhyme Time 10:30-11:15 (or as long as you want to stay in the library). Yoga 6:30-8pm Tuesday, Art Class 10:00-12:30, Yoga 6:45-8:00pm, Readers’ group (last Tues of the month) 3:004:00pm. This is an earlier time as the library shuts at 4:00. We would like new members to join this small and friendly group. Wednesday, Chair Yoga 3:00-4:00pm, Gentle Yoga 4:30-6:00pm, Yoga 6:30-8:00pm Friday, Readers’ Group (last Fri of the month) 10:30-12:30, Needles and Pins twice a month. 10:30-12:30. This is a friendly craft group which would welcome new members. Relaxing Colouring group, 2:00-3:00pm Everything is provided. Come and have a stress free hour before the weekend. NEW I-pad/tablet taster course. We are trying to arrange this course so please ring to book a place. We are still trying to arrange a tutor for this course and will let the people who have signed up know as soon as possible. Christmas Fayre Friday Nov 25th. Hatfield Community Library will be continuing the tradition of having our Christmas Fayre on the last Friday of November. We hope you will support us. There will be a variety of stalls (including a cake stall!) and raffle. I have also heard the rumour that there will be mulled wine!! The money raised will be shared between Weston Park Sheffield, the MS Society and the library. Some of our volunteers have now found employment so if anyone has time to work on Monday and/or Friday afternoon please contact the library. All our activities can also be found on Facebook and Streetlife. Please share the activities with your friends and family. Finally did anyone manage to the ‘Record Super Moon’ on November 14th? Apparently it was the largest moon for nearly 70 years! Contact. Tel. 842064 E-mail: hatfieldcommunitylibrary@gmail.com

Community News 68th Doncaster Hatfield scout Group Beavers did a smartie fund raiser for the guide dogs for the blind in October and had a great visit from Anne and her puppy Betty. Each Beaver took a tube of smarties home to eat, and then brought them back to give to Anne full of coins. A magnificent £65.50 was raised thanks to all the families involved. By the time this is printed the beaver scout section will have enjoyed another sleepover at the village hall. Cubs have been busy working on their World Challenge Badge, learning about other countries, their cub promise and local games, along with the countries traditions, religion, landmarks, food and famous people. The scout and cub sections have joined for some activities in November, including outdoor cooking at Sandall Beat wood and going Ice Skating to the Dome. On November 13th many of the group attended the Remembrance Service and marched to Hatfield Woodhouse memorial to lay wreaths. We are looking forward to all three sections will joining for 2 xmas events, our xmas party, and on December 14th our xmas service at St Lawrence Church in Hatfield to round off the year. It’s been a busy year for 68th and we are delighted to see scouting growing again in Hatfield. Work has also continued on our scout hut. A small group of parents are working on the project but we are always happy to have more help, so if there is anything you can offer either as goods or services please contact the group. If you would like to join our beaver, cub or scout group please contact Sue Lloyd (Beaver Leader) on 07802 875738 or follow the links on the website . Beavers are 6-8yrs, Cubs 8-10yrs and Scouts 10-14yrs. All sections are for both boys and girls and meet at Hatfield Woodhouse Village Hall during term time on Wednesday evenings. The Pauline Quirke Academy Doncaster
The Pauline Quirke Academy Doncaster opened its doors for business on Sat 24th Sept 2016, and I have looked forward to every Saturday morning since! Having sadly been made redundant from Ash Hill Academy after 13 happy years there, I worried about what I would do to replace my love for performing arts and encouraging young people to achieve their personal best, whilst giving them the skills set for a good start in life, and PQA has done that! I have met some lovely students and parents from across Doncaster and further afield and now have 80 students ages ranging from 4-18 years. They carousel classes every Saturday morning in Film and television, comedy and drama and musical theatre, and are all eligible to be in the Quirky Kidz Agency if they want to, where they will audition for roles in adverts, film, TV and stage. The academy is run by professionally by myself, and professionally trained teachers, with teaching assistants in every class to ensure the students get the very best experience and training. We operate every Saturday registering at 9.45am until 1pm at High Melton University in fantastic accommodation. We are currently busy working on a Christmas showcase based on Roald Dahl, them moving onto a main school show next year, in between so giving students opportunities such as outside masterclasses, theatre visits and exams. The students we currently have are a great bunch, and they create a lovely supportive and friendly atmosphere within the academy, with new friendships forming. A mixture of abilities form PQA, which is something I am proud of. Those who come each week to improve self confidence, a way to make new friends, and to learn how to be a team and work together, all life skills which will help them in whatever they choose to do in later life, whilst having fun in a safe and caring environment. On the flip side there are students who want to get their first professional acting job, and I cannot wait to get our first PQA Doncaster student on TV! I wish PQA was around when I was growing up! These children are so lucky, as it is a fantastic stepping stone to greater things. PQA Doncaster is the place where we encourage students to “Be yourself, be amazing!” If you want to come and see what it is all about please get in touch with me on : janet.marsh@pqacademy.com for a free taster session. The school is nearly full but we have waiting lists and spaces are still available in some groups. Follow us on Facebook PQA DONCASTER Janet Marsh, Principal

Eden Camp
On Wednesday 2nd November we (the Lion class) arrived at Eden Camp in Malton, North Yorkshire. We were amazed at how large the museum was and that it was outside. There were twenty-nine huts, each explaining a different aspect of life during World War II. We had a map of the museum and we prioritised which huts we felt were most important for us to experience as Mrs Chesney said that she didn’t think we would have time to go in all of the huts. Eventually, we set off in our small groups, the first hut we went in was hut 5 - the Blitz. Slowly, we edged in, as we opened the door it was: dark, gloomy and frightening. Straight away our eyes, noses and then our lungs were filled with smoke, after that we could hear the sounds of air raid sirens, explosions and screams for help. Honestly, we were not sure we wanted to go any further! At last our eyes adjusted to the dark and we could see, as a group we moved forward and all became clear. The hut was a scene from a Blitzed street in London, houses had been bombed and families were trying to escape. We were shocked at how realistic the experience was, it gave us a real feel of what it was like for people who were living through World War II and in particular the Blitz. Next we moved on to hut 7 - The Street at war. We loved this hut, it was a high street in the 1940’s, it was so different to how we shop now. We are used to going to the supermarket or large shopping centres when we need to buy items, the high street had individual shops such as: a butchers, bakers, iron mongers and a toy shop. Each shop had its windows taped up in case of bombing to stop the glass shattering everywhere. The most shocking thing we noticed was how little food the shops had to sell, we knew there was rationing of food and clothes during World War II, but it made it very clear how little food. We played a game guessing how much food a single person would receive for a week during rationing, we got it very wrong! We didn’t realise how lucky we are, we have cupboards full of food, during the war they survived on so little. After that, we went to hut 6 - the music hall. This was an awesome hut, it was full of fun and laughter. We are used to watching television, playing on video games and using smartphones and tablets, during World War II these items did not exist so entertainment came in the form of music, singing, comedy acts and dancing. We got a little taster of this when we joined in singing “When I’m Cleaning Windows" by George Formby, “White Cliffs of Dover” by Vera Lynn and we listened to a very funny comedy act telling a story about Albert and the lion. We have never laughed so much, we were thoroughly entertained. There were so many other good huts ranging from: the U boat menace, the raise of Hitler, women at war, the home front, evacuation and the Bevin boys. For anybody with an interest in World War II or any class covering this as their topic we would highly recommend a visit to Eden Camp. We got a top quality, first-hand experience of what life during the war was like. Year 5 & 6 Lion class.

2016 - Top 11 Well, here is probably my last ever Top 10 in fact its actually a Top 11... you will see that this year it is dominated by some superb fund raising efforts which I feel deserve a dollop of proper community recognition. There are some amazing people within our midst and sometimes they can go unseen and even unacknowledged for the wonderful efforts they make. Remember its only a bit of fun and so please don't bend my ear if you see me out and about...
And so there you have it.... my 2016 Top 11.... Happy Christmas to one and all... please take time to reflect of those less fortunate than yourself, (that includes West Ham fans like me) make time for your elderly neighbours, make time for your friends, be kind to animals, show compassion to those who need it and finally, let your hairs down in the local pubs..... Happy Crimbo...PW AKA The Difference

Visitors at Thorne Camera Club Thornensians are friendly folk and always make visitors welcome, and this is no less true of members of the Camera Club. They have had several visitors in the past few weeks and are expecting more soon. First they welcomed Geoff Trinder ARPS, Chairman of Lincolnshire Wildlife Trust, and his wife Chris, who live in Lincolnshire. Normally, they travel much further than that; in fact Geoff admitted visiting every continent except Antartica, but that is on his to-do list. He goes on photographic journeys, and Chris carries the excess equipment! From Macaque monkeys in Japan to Wildebeest in Africa, Bison in Yellowstone National Park in the depths of winter, to the barren looking dunes in the heat of Namibia, Geoff took everyone on a journey with him, through his images, and all were happy to go along. He also gave members a few hints and tips about photographing wildlife. He so impressed one member, that, following his advice, she had a close encounter with a stag, but got some great photos. If you are now wishing you had been there, to see and hear him, you have another opportunity to see some fantastic photos. Later this month, on November 28th, Thorne Camera Club will welcome Des Lloyd, from Gainsborough, who won the Daily Telegraph Wildlife Photographer of the Year competition last year, in the face of some tough opposition from excellent and professional photographers, even though Des only took up photography a few years ago. His dedication and expertise are obvious in every photograph he takes. Come along and see them for yourself, 7.15 pm at the Methodist Church Hall, door charge only £3.00. All visitors welcome. For further information contact the Club on 07463821182. Then came a visit by Dearne Valley Camera Club, four members arrived with huge boxes

of large, mounted photographs of a variety of subjects, many super monochromes, which is a bit of a speciality over there. This was a new experience for both clubs; not a competition, not a talk, but a sharing of knowledge and photographs in an expression of friendship and support. In January members of Thorne will return the favour and travel over to Dearne Valley with a selection of their work to share with the members there. It was a very friendly, relaxed evening with lots of chat and banter over tea and cake, and a lot of useful information as well. Chairman of DVCC ,John Jolliffe, brought photographs taken by drone, aerial views of castles, churches and local villages, also explaining the rules of drone flying and aerial photography. How can Thorne top that? Well, they can; they have a member who does underwater photography, so some of her photos will be travelling to Wath. These are just a few of the many things happening at Thorne Camera Club, so if you have an interest in photography of any kind and would like to join this active and growing, friendly group, please contact the chairman.
