Community News Hatfield Woodhouse Methodist Church Scarecrow Weekend 30th & 31st October The scarecrow weekend held by Hatfield Woodhouse Methodist Church was a tremendous success. The village threw themselves into creative mode with 36 scarecrows on various themes dotted all over the village. Despite the torrential rain on both mornings it was pleasing to see the amount of family groups braving the elements and walking around the village to see the entertaining spectacles. The competition was of high quality and the result was extremely close. The winner was ‘Lucy Lockdown’ followed by, 2nd, ‘Crow Your Own’ and 3rd ‘Rugby Player’. On our walk around the village, we were approached by numerous family groups expressing their wish to participate next year. The whole weekend was made much more enjoyable by the return, post lockdown, of bacon butties and scrumptious cakes at the Chapel. The event was a worthy step towards normal village activities again and the intention is for this to become an annual event, put your thinking caps on! Once again, the Chapel would like to thank everyone who put such hard work and thought into their scarecrows. Their efforts raised a grand total of £872.68

HATFIELD WOODHOUSE AMATEUR GARDENING SOCIETY The latest meeting of the Society was held on Tuesday 2 November at Hatfield Woodhouse Club. This was the Annual General Meeting, the first one since November 2019, the 2020 one being cancelled for reasons of which we are all aware. After an introduction by the President and Chairman John Brown the meeting followed the normal pattern for these events. The Treasurer reported on the financial position and proposed that in view of the fact that members who paid their subscriptions in late 2019 had not had much benefit from them, that subscriptions for current members be waived for the coming year, new member to pay the subscription. After discussion this proposal was carried. All but one of the officers and committee were re-elected. Brenda White has retired from the post of Membership Secretary and Julia Jackson was elected in her place. It was announced that the Christmas party will be held on Tuesday 7 December at the Club. We will be entertained by members of the Fishlake Choir and there will be a Buffet. The event is free for members, and member’s guests are welcome at a cost of £5 each. Members who have not yet signed up for this event should call Joan Brown on 07856435334. The committee are planning the programme for the coming months, including a possible outing to Burton Agnes and Bridlington in the summer. Further updates on this when available.

DANUM PROBUS CLUB Danum Probus Club is a group of men who have retired or are semi-retired from their profession, business or other employment who want to maintain a social network with others who have similar interests. Danum Probus Club meets on the first and third Mondays of the month at Town Moor Golf Club, Bawtry Road, Belle Vue, Doncaster starting at 10 am. Recent speakers have included Denis Ashton who talked about the Apollo Programme to take men to the moon. Dennis has been a regular visitor over the past few years and as usual gave an enlightening presentation. Other presentations have included amusing anecdotes about funerals and support dogs. We have also had a Special General Meeting to discuss changes to the constitution and elect officers for the coming year. The decisions from this meeting will be reported next month. Any interested men who would like to come the meetings as a visitor to see what we do, with a view to joining if you like us, please call either Geoff Firth (01302 849734), David Allen (01302 885813 or John Brown (01302 771602) for more information.

Hatfield Community Library When the library was shut, I had to buy new books to read. Now I have a lot of books which have been read once and not a lot of space for them. I can, of course, donate them to the library for resale. Now that the library is open, I can read as many books as I want for free and order the latest books without worrying what to do with them after I have read them. Out of curiosity, I looked up the top 200 writers on the Fantastic Fiction website. Then, with a bit of help, I looked at the books in the library and found that we had books by nearly all of the top 200 authors in our library. The few which were missing were available on the library system. We can order books from other libraries and have them delivered to Hatfield to be collected at your convenience. We have had a delivery of new and new to us Children’s books which are on display in the library. We have many books by some of the top children’s writers. If they are not on our shelves, then we can order them. We also have non-fiction books which cover many of the topics taught in school. The History section has books from Stone-Age up to WW2. The Living things has books on animals including Humans, reptiles, birds and mammals and plants. In the science section there are books on electricity, different materials and Earth and space. We have books about different countries and religions to help with RE and Geography. There are some dictionaries to help with Languages. And last but definitely not least we have many Fiction books suitable for all ages which will help children to improve their reading, language use and imaginations. All this knowledge is free to take home. Nothing is better than looking at a book, turning pages and looking wonderful l illustrations. We have also put out a selection of our toys for the younger children to play with when they are in the library looking for books or just visiting for a change of venue. The toys have been washed and sanitised. There are wipes and cleaner available on a high shelf to give an extra layer of care. Played with toys can be put in a box to be re-sanitised.

Half Term Event

The Lab Rascals was greatly enjoyed by adults and children alike. Exciting experiments on a wet, windy day- nothing could be better. Our thanks go to Councillor Duncan Anderson who used his allowance to support the library events. Without seeking grants, we would not be able to put on our free events especially after such a lean year and a half. Author Event. June Horbury will be talking about her book, Life after Adoption” on Wednesday Nov.30th at 3pm in the library. June describes her story“When my adoptive father died, I was looking through his things and came across a shabby, old box which contained his legal documents, and there it was my adoption certificate. I always knew I was adopted but as soon as I saw my birth mother’s name on this old piece of paper, something stirred inside me and I knew, at that moment, I had to try to find her. My husband told me to “leave well alone” and in some respects he was right, as when I did find her, I discovered a dreadful secret. I was devastated. But it didn’t end there, as following her death some years later, another secret was revealed which shocked my family. Had my husband been right when he said, “Leave well alone”?” Apologies but the advertised talk by Janet Phillips will not be taking place, Friday Dec.3rd Christmas Fayre In conjunction with the Church lights being switched on. There will various stalls- aromatherapy, cakes, books, bird boxes etc, chocolate tombola maybe more. Refreshments will be available. The Fayre will continue into Saturday morning. Saturday Dec. 4th Drama Night. Another performance by actors from Cast who will perform scenes to do with Education. (Not as forbidding as it sounds!) The actors are performing “Educating Rita” this year so that will give you some idea about the content of the evening. The tickets will be £7, and this will include refreshments. We will provide tea and coffee but if you are missing out on going to the pub you can bring your own alcohol. All our groups are still running if you are looking for something to do as the days get colder and darker earlier. I love the zoom Yoga classes which means I can stay at home and not be seen in my sometimes-pathetic attempts. It is a gentle relaxing class. We are trying to get funding to continue with the zoom classes when the current funding runs out. WEEKLY CLASSES MONDAY. Bridge 1:15pm for beginners and improvers. (free activity)

THORNE CAMERA CLUB The delayed 7th Annual General Meeting was held in October with the chairman, treasurer and secretary retiring. After a secret vote Terry Gunnill was elected as chairman and Terry Lockwood elected as treasurer, other members of the committee were elected on a block vote with Malcolm Hayes taking over as vice chairman, Patricia Woodward as secretary,Mike Donnison as competition secretary and Bill Mitchell as Publicity Officer. After a short address the new chairman proposed that David and Lynda be made Honorary Presidents of the Club for their work in founding the club and continued work over the past eight years in the organisation of the club. The proposal was passed by a majority show of hands. On the retirement of David and Lynda as Chairman and secretary all the members of the Thorne Camera Club thank them for their considerable contribution to the club over the years and wish them a well in their retirement. The first meeting after the AGM was a Members Night with an excellent talk and demonstration by Malcolm Hayes on the 'Wet World of Mono Photography' in which he showed members how to develop black and white film and to digitise the images for Printing. The talk was well received with members wanting information on the chemicals used together with their own experiences of dark room operations. The club was treated to a marvellous Talk on 'Photographers at War', first seen at the British Legion headquarters in London. The presentation, given by a sprightly Stuart Clark gave a first hand account of the work together with excellent photographs of the operations of the 'Army Film & Photographic Unit' which he served throughout the war from training at the Pinewood Studios to being deployed to the far east. The club held the first print competition of the new season on the 25th October. The competion was 'Open' with many and varied entries from members. The members welcomed the judge Martin Litchfield CPAGB who gave a first class detailed critique for each entry. His final choices were 'Gannet at Rest' by Bob Allen, 'This IS my Best Side' by Bill Mitchell and 'Summer Time' by Colin Jarvis. Highly commended images were Trevor Holt (2), Bob Allen (2), Mike Donnison, 23 and Terry Lockwood. Commended were Terry Gunnill, Bill Mitchell, Terry Lockwood and June Horbury. Finally Thorne Camera Club express their gratitude to all the shops on The Green and Finkle Street who displayed an exhibition of prints by the club members during August and September it was very much appreciated.

DONCASTER CANCER DETECTION TRUST Here we are well into Autumn and we hope you are managing to keep fit and warm despite the colder weather. We have been in talks with consultants at Doncaster Royal Infirmary regarding our skin cancer appeal and we are thrilled to report that we have the funds to purchase a vital piece of equipment they need. It is a threedimensional camera which will enable students in Doncaster (and potentially all over the world) to learn a new basal cell carcinoma technique via electronic communication. The technique involves excising the basal cell carcinoma and achieving a primary closure of the wound without the need for skin grafting. Doncaster is a centre of excellence for this procedure. In the whole country there are only three centres working at this level. The department would also like to buy smaller pieces of equipment for their work with skin cancers, so your donations will still help in this very worthwhile cause. We will let you know more about this in future publications. We are excited to confirm that, as mentioned previously, we can hold our Memory Tree event in Frenchgate Centre on the run-up to Christmas. This is where you can purchase a Christmas tree ornament in memory of a loved one. It will start on Monday, 29th November and will finish on Saturday, 18th December. Provisional times will be from 10am to 3pm each day. We have recently been informed by staff at Frenchgate Centre that many people were extremely disappointed last year when there was no Memory Tree. This was due to the fact that, because of Covid-19, shops were only allowed to open as a last minute decision by our Government and rules were still very strict as to social contact. We were as disappointed as you, but like so many other organisations, we were faced by tough restrictions. However, we are back this year and hope you will come along to have a chat and see the variety of items we have for sale, some favourites and some new ones which we hope you will like. In the meantime if you would like to get in touch with us our details are: 22 Wood Street, Doncaster DN1 3LW (entrance by the side of Kerry Gough Florists), second floor (lift available), Room 209. Tel. 01302 325029. Email: info@dcdt.co.uk. Website: dcdt.co.uk. Please do keep supporting us. We strive to raise money to purchase cancer-related equipment for our local hospitals which in turn hopefully helps improve the lives of local people and beyond. Our very grateful thanks to you all.

Hatfield Woodhouse Primary School News Hi everyone! It’s Janson, Lola, Ellie, Heidi and Grayson here from Hatfield Woodhouse. We have lots of news for you… Hollowford Year 6 went on a school trip at the end of last half term, to Hollowford. The Year 6s did outdoor activities such as: Weaselling, caving, canoeing, raft -making and ziplining. They all really enjoyed the trip and were able to practise skills such as teamwork, independence and resilience. “Hollowford was very fun, especially the caving.” Max in Y6 told us. Divali The FS2s took part in a Divali workshop last week. They decorated their own candles in the Divali Workshop. They really enjoyed it and Mrs Kantecki told us, “The children loved the Divali workshop. They listened to a story about two people that love each other. They also blew bubbles and watched fireworks”. “I liked the bubbles very much.” Riva told us in FS2. “I liked the fireworks a lot!” Kean. TT Rockstars In school we use TT Rockstars to help us improve our timetables knowledge. Currently on TT Rockstars we are working on a school tournament. All of the classes are competing to see if they can win prizes that will be awarded by Mrs Chesney! Remembrance Day We held a two-minute silence on 11/11/21 for all the soldiers that have lost their lives in war. Mrs Acton held an assembly to talk about the day and what poppies symbolise. Classes made poppy wreaths and art-work to take to the cenotaph to show our respect. Christmas We are currently preparing for our Christmas shows in school. From the Friends of Quarry Park: The Quarry Park volunteers met on Friday 5th November for the monthly work party. There were twelve of us plus the young son of one of our volunteers, who was such an enthusiastic helper! We also had support from two of the DMBC Countryside Rangers. The weather was kind to us and we had a very productive morning. One team tackled the car park hedge, which was badly in need of cutting back and another team worked on tidying up the clearing in the woods. Two of the volunteers did a litter pick, collecting two bags and a very old Council waste bin liner that had somehow found its way into the park. Last month, The Friends of Quarry Park celebrated their 25th anniversary with a Scarecrow Festival and BYO Picnic in the park on Saturday 16th October. The weather was perfect and everything seemed to go according to plan. There were 17 scarecrows entered in the competition and they were all absolutely superb. They turned up in wheelbarrows, attached to walking frames, sitting in chairs and sun loungers, propped up against stepladders and on bespoke frames. So much thought and creativity had been put in to every single one. Proceedings were formally started at 11:00am by Hatfield Town Council Deputy Mayor, Debbie Smith, who delivered the Opening Address and cut the ribbon. The number of visitors exceeded all our expectations, and everyone seemed to enjoy viewing the scarecrows and voting for their favourite. It was an absolute joy to see so many families enjoying the sunshine in the park, with quite a few bringing chairs and picnics. We had plenty of positive feedback about the event, which made the hours of planning very worthwhile! Voting for the scarecrows closed at 2.00pm with a total of 240 votes placed. It was a close call but Top Class, produced by DMBC Countryside Rangers, won 1st prize, closely followed by Betsy Ballerina built by Sue Teale Dancing; 3rd place went to the cute Minnie Aunt Sally by Tracy Sinott and 4th was Danny Dunn hailing from Dunsville Community Centre. The 5th prize went to Space Oddity by Amanda Lane. Congratulations to all the winners; we wish we could have given everyone a prize as they all deserved one. Thanks to Hong Kong Cantonese Restaurant, Coffee at Number 4, Natural England, Londis and Barrie Cars for donating the lovely prizes and our Chairman provided another two. All the children scarecrow builders received a prize too. Thanks also to Doncaster Town Councillor Hatfield Ward, Glynis Smith, for presenting the prizes and to the Countryside Rangers, Chelle and Louise, for their support. We also had some other good news during October as the Park was once again awarded a Green Flag for 2021 /22. The presentation was held at the flagpole on the Park on 14th October, with Nick Fletcher MP in attendance. The Friends are so proud to have been recognised again for all their hard work but couldn't do it without the amazing commitment from all the regular and ad hoc volunteers, all the DMBC staff who also work hard, cutting the grass, emptying the bins, doing the heavy maintenance plus inspecting and keeping the children's play areas safe, and the Rangers who support The Friends. Congratulations to all involved. The December volunteers’ work party will be held on Friday 3rd December. Anyone interested in coming along to help will be most welcome. Equipment is provided but it’s advisable to have sturdy footwear and gloves. There is always plenty of work to be done, from litter picking to clearing paths and cutting back vegetation. We meet in the car park at the end of St Mary’s Road, Dunsville at 10.00am. For more information, please email us on thequarrypark@gmail.com or message our Facebook page ‘Friends of Quarry Park’.
