Welcome to the February 2016 Issue of The Hatfield Arrow. I can’t believe its been 11 years since I started the magazine!! Initially called ‘The Hatfield Flyer’ the magazine has been distributed to homes in Hatfield, Hatfield Woodhouse and Dunsville every month for 11 years!! This would not have been possible without the many local businesses that have given their support and have advertised in the magazine, some of whom have advertised every month for years! I would also like to thank all the people who send in regular articles, readers, distributors and anyone who has at any time contributed to the production of the magazine. There are so many people in the community that help make the magazine a success, who I am truly grateful to. I would like to list everyone individually but as usual the magazine is full and I am having to squeeze in what I can.

Thank you!! Julie Morrell

Hatfield Community Library I have to start this New Year with an apology to readers as I have given you some incorrect information. Yes, there goes one of my New Year resolutions-not to anything daft!! (The others, losing weight and keeping fit I am still working on but ……) In the last edition, I mentioned that all the internet sites available for borrowers can be accessed for free at home or the library. Unfortunately, some of my information was not entirely correct. Three of the sites are only available at Central Library, Which magazine on line, Mint and Latitude Mapping. The last two are not free. I should have checked the data instead of taking it at face value but we live and learn. The library is back in action with all the course running as usual. Monday, Rhyme Time 10:30-11:15 (or as long as you want to stay in the library). Yoga 6:30-8pm Lingotots begins in January at 3:45. For more information ring the library. Tuesday, Art Class 10:00-12:30, Yoga 6:45-8:00pm, Readers’ group (last Tues of the month) 3:004:00pm. We would like new members to join this small and friendly group. Wednesday, Chair Yoga 3:00-4:00pm, Gentle Yoga 4:30-6:00pm, Yoga 6:30-8:00pm Friday, Readers’ Group (last Fri of the month) 10:30-12:30, Needles and Pins twice a month. 10:30-12:30. This is a friendly craft group which would welcome new members. Please ring the library for more information about any courses. MP Surgeries From January Caroline Flint will holding monthly surgeries in the library on the following dates. Jan 20th, Feb 3rd, March 10th, April 21st, May 12th, June 9th, July 14th, Sept 8th, Oct 13th Nov 10th, Dec 8th. Time 3:30-4:15 If you have any issues you would like to discuss with the MP, please make an appointment by ringing 01302 623330 We also have local councillors holding their surgeries at the library. Feb 11th Councillors D. Fiennes-Gregory and B Morrison March 11th Councillor Powell and another to be decided. These are drop in sessions. I have had a couple of interesting emails from people who are trying to trace residents of the Hatfield area. One gentleman is seeking information about Thomas Turton, Bishop of Ely b.1780 in Hatfield. His father, also Thomas Turton, was an apothecary. There is a lot about him on Google but no local information, The other gentleman is looking for any information from the 1700s about the Prime (Pryme), Ambler and Jennings families with particular reference to land ownership or rentals from that time. At the library, we have a list of residents in the Hatfield area during 1784. We did find some Jennings who were farmers at Tudworth and Hatfield Levels. According to Family Search.org, there were Prymes and Amblers born in this area in the early 1700s but no information other than names at the moment I know these are date are not in anyone’s lifetime but if anyone has any information please contact the library. If you were given DVDs or books for Christmas and would like to make some space by getting rid of some of your older ones, please bring them to the library, The DVDs must be original and not copies. All our activities can also be found on Facebook and Streetlife. Please share the activities with friends and family to help us to advertise them. We are trying to improve our Facebook site to make it more informative and interesting. We also put posters in local shops that kindly promote the library.

Happy New Year We would like to take this opportunity to wish you a Happy New Year. It has been a busy time for all at Travis, however Year 5 would like to tell you about their learning. Last half term, their topic was WW2 and this is their report. Year 5 of Travis St Lawrence Primary were visited by World War Two expert Alan Jamison. The whole year group were gathered in the school garden when Mr Jamison drove into the school grounds in a magnificent replica WW2 jeep. We were all overwhelmed! The jeep was full of imitation weapons, it had a first-aid kit, a fire extinguisher and it had lots of controls: it even had a siren. Many questions were put forward to our expert and we discovered many things: the siren was sounded when the jeep would lead a convoy of jeeps into a town or new village, it ran on petrol, there were extra seats at the back, there were no doors for easy access but fabric sheets instead. We took many photographs and were captivated by Alan’s uniform. He had a steel helmet that looked like an upside down soup plate, he had a belt with a book, a bayonet, a sidearm and various guns including a rifle. The experience was very useful and it gave us many more ideas about World War Two. We all thanked our visitor before he reversed out of the school gates. Thank you for reading our report.

A NEW YEAR AT THORNE CAMERA CLUB When it comes to photography, wildlife photographers take the biscuit! They not only wake at unearthly hours, they then crawl about in undergrowth, rain or shine, all day long, to photograph some elusive creature which may not even show up! This is how Des Lloyd, of Gainsbrough, gets fantastic images which he showed at Thorne Camera Club. With tales of falling in dykes, or spending nights in a tree, Des showed there is no need to travel the world for wildlife, it’s there on your doorstep. ( A fox was spotted in the town centre one Monday night! ). Des doesn’t travel far, but takes photos of badgers, foxes and deer, birds, and reptiles too. Members really appreciated his down to earth approach to photography, which he began in retirement four years ago. The last event of the year for the Camera Club was the Christmas social which was well attended. An informal competition, theme - a Christmas Carol or Song. The aim was to interpret the title of the chosen song in an image. Two photographs stood out in terms of the result of a vote by members: “Winter Wonderland” by Colin Jarvis and “Let It Snow” by David Ulyett. A buffet supper was provided with many of the usual goodies associated with the season. Then members formed teams for a photographic themed quiz . The sixteen

questions were mostly quite straight forward, for anyone interested in photography, but one or two tough ones caught out the unwary. The results were: The Apertures 5 Of Us The Half Dozen

The Committee distributed diaries for members as a small gift, containing the Winter/Spring Programme for 2017. Lots of variety included, something to suit all, with competitions both in print and projected, themes such as architecture, pattern and texture, weather and seascapes, plus an Open option in each competition. Also guest speakers’ visits, and nights devoted to portraiture, lighting and Smartphone photography to name a few. Finally, a raffle, with prizes donated by members, first prize being an impressive hamper, won by Sunday Akpan. Of 22 prizes, some lucky members won two or even three !! And no-one won a prize they had donated! Multiple winners were; Terry Lockwood and Trevor Holt 3 each, Sunday Akpan, Alan Pickersgill, Lynda Ulyett, David Wood, Bill Mitchell and Mel Brown 2 each. So we look forward to the New Year, and don’t forget I f you were fortunate enough to receive a new camera for Christmas, or would like to learn how to get the best from a camera you already owned, come along to a Thorne Camera Club Meeting in 2017. Contact 07463821182 or email thornecameraclub@yahoo.co.uk Happy New Year to you all!

Whether you’re a shopaholic or a reluctant browser, most would agree that convenience is a key word when it comes to the charms and chores of shopping. And what could be more convenient than the shops that are there on our doorstop? Don’t pass them by as if they are somehow second rate. They are not. In fact convenience is only a part of the story as to why they deserve our support. Here is a little food for thought… Jumping into the car and heading for that out-of-town super store or shopping mall may seem a good idea. But it can end up a time-wasting, costly and frustrating experience. Time, they say, is precious. But how many hours are wasted in traffic jams, just getting to your destination – and then driving round to find a place to park (and often having to pay for the privilege to do that, too!) In the meantime, the pennies you think you will save turn into pounds of extra expense. Strange, but true, most people don’t view it that way. Why? – Because the extra expense is not shown on the receipt of goods they buy. But it all comes out of the wallet just the same! Another thing which is often overlooked is the cost to the environment – something which is on the minds of a growing number of people in these days of climate changes. Unnecessary journeys simply add to all those CO2 emissions which are threatening to choke our globe. A walk to the local shops is healthier... and cheaper in more ways than one! If it’s a friendly, personal service you are after, then there’s nothing finer than the shop on the corner. Such attention is a tradition that has its roots embedded in the history of each village and hamlet in the area. “It wasn’t until I tried my local shops that I realised just how much they stock,” said one shopper. “I was amazed at the variety – and the costs were very reasonable too.” The growth of our villages in recent years has seen an increase in facilities and business services. But they can only survive if the people they are designed to serve support them. Let’s face it, we’d all miss them if they were not there!

Tuesday 4 January was our first meeting of 2017 which was held as usual at Hatfield Woodhouse Club. The subject for the meeting was ‘The Twilight Garden’ presented by Gail and John Summerfield, who run the Westshores Nursery (www.westshores.co.uk) at Winterton near Scunthorpe. The presentation was in two parts. Firstly, Gail explained the effect of the diminishing light of twilight on the colours of flowers and foliage. Blue flowers are the first to disappear from view, followed by reds. Pale pinks and yellows follow. The whites and near whites are the last to disappear. Shiny foliage stays in view longer than matt leaves, and variegated longer than non-variegated. Also, as the light fades the outlines of clumps of plants and of large flowerhead which are higher than foliage, all blend together into one interesting shape. All these points were illustrated with excellent photographs. Then we moved on to the light show. John showed us how to make our gardens change character by using white and coloured lights when the sun has set. Reminding us that the primary colours of light are red, blue and green (not red, blue and yellow like pigments), he showed us the effect of lighting plants and shrubs from above, the side and below. Lighting a Phormium (with a white background) from the sides with two different colours produced a fantastic effect both on the plant and on its shadows on the background. This unusual presentation gave us lots of ideas on how we can enjoy our gardens as the daylight ends and moving into the dark hours. The next meeting of the Society is on Tuesday 7 February. Unfortunately our scheduled speaker, Christine Johnson, is unable to be with us, but her husband, Martin Johnson, has stepped in to fill the spot. We will be having one of our non gardening evenings, but with an entertaining speaker all the same. Martin will be telling us some amusing tales based on his working life which started in the Police Force. As usual the venue is Hatfield Woodhouse Club, and the starting time 7-30. Everybody is welcome to the meeting.

Cyber-crime is one of the fastest growing crimes both nationally md internationally. It affects major companies, small businesses and individuals. Major crimes involving large companies may often become a victim of cyber-crime but keep quiet about the crime as customers could lose confidence in the company if details were publicised. Small businesses could be affected to such an extent that they could lose customers, valuable and sensitive information or even cease trading. An individual could have their bank accounts emptied, have their computer infected by a virus and lose all their files or have their computer used to carry out a dedicated denial of service to a larger company. A few simple tips can help reduce the chances of cyber-crime happening to you or your business. Passwords can be cracked. Software is available that can assist criminals to crack passwords. Never Use  Pets names  Family members names  Partners names  Childs names  Place of Birth  Something related to your favourite sports team  Nicknames’ Use a phrase including capital and lower case letters, a symbol and a number. I have used a four word phrase in a foreign language and included several symbols and more than one number Always  Keep a Clean Machine: Having the latest security software, web browser, and operating system are the best defenses against viruses, malware, and other online threats.  Ensure you have effective and updated antivirus/antispyware software and firewall running whenever your computer or mobile device is switched on.  Download updates to your programs and apps when prompted to do so … they often include security fixes.  Take great care about which links you click on in emails – they may be phishing.  Take great care about opening attachments in emails, even if they seem to be from people you know  Avoid suspicious website and torrent downloading. Many such downloads are not only against the law but also a major gateway for this type of cyber-attack.
