Welcome to the February 2019 Issue of The Hatfield Arrow. I can’t believe its been 13 years since I started the magazine!! Initially called ‘The Hatfield Flyer’ the magazine has been distributed to homes in Hatfield, Hatfield Woodhouse and Dunsville every month for 13 years!! This would not have been possible without the many local businesses that have given their support and have advertised in the magazine, some of whom have advertised every month for years! I would also like to thank all the people who send in regular articles, readers, distributors and anyone who has at any time contributed to the production of the magazine. The deadline for the March issue is Thursday 14th February.
Best Wishes Julie Morrell

Community News HATFIELD WOODHOUSE AMATEUR GARDENING SOCIETY With the first Tuesday of the month being New Year’s Day, the Society broke with precedent and held its meeting on the Second Tuesday of the month. The meeting was at Hatfield Woodhouse Club as usual. On this occasion we were entertained by Pam Banks with one of her quizzes. The nice thing about Pam’s quizzes is that they are hard enough to make you think, but not so hard that you can only get a few correct answers. The next meeting is back on the first Tuesday of the month. So on Tuesday 5 February we will meet at Hatfield Woodhouse Club at 7-30. The guest speaker will be Sarah Hopps and her topic is “The All Season Garden”. Everybody is welcome to the meeting, members and non members alike.
Senior Indoor Nets at HTCC New Club Captain Craig Pattison and Vice Captain Alec Elliott are on the look out for a couple of signings to strengthen their squad for next season. Indoor nets commence on Wednesday 20th February 6:30-7:30 at Hungerhill School, Edenthorpe, if you're interested in a new challenge at an ambitious club with close community ties and a growing junior section, that promises much for the future, then get in touch with Craig on 07446782017. The club will be competing in Saturday and Sunday Leagues as well as the Evening League so there's lots of options available to play. HTCC Junior Nets open to all existing players and newcomers. Hatfield Towns junior Under 9's and Under 11's begin preparing for their season on Monday 18th February 6:00-8:00pm at Hungerhill School. The Under 13's will be commencing their training Wednesday 20th February at Hungerhill School 6:30-7:30. All our coaches are ECB Level 2 qualified with first aid certificates and are DBS checked. Hatfield Woodhouse Primary School By: Lloyd, Lydia, Emily and Masie 50 Years and Counting An amazing event happened at Hatfield Woodhouse this week, Mrs Holt one of our teaching assistants has been working at our school for 50 years! Yes that’s right 50 years! To celebrate this momentous occasion each class looked at a different decade starting in the 1970’s. We focused on changes in education, clothes, toys and also film and T.V. We were all staggered to actually see in front of us the changes that the lovely Mrs Holt has witnessed so far, in life and school. Starting at the 1970’s and ending all the way at present day – 2019. There was plenty of giggles at the potential fashion Mrs Holt wore from miniskirts, perms and shoulder pads to rara skirts and shell suits. Changes have been vast and constant for Mrs Holt in the education sector for the past 50 years, if you think, she has seen blackboards and chalk come and go, then white-boards and markers were introduced and now we use interactive computer screens or T.V.’s in classrooms. Yet some things have stayed exactly the same, pupils still write with pencil and paper. We asked Mrs Holt what her favourite change was that she has seen in her time at school and she said, “I like that both boys and girls can do all the activities now, there was a time where only the girls would cook and do sewing and where only the boys would do P.E. and woodwork. I think everyone should have the opportunity to learn the skills like want.” Mrs Holt didn’t like all the attention being on her, but we wanted to celebrate how hard and how long Mrs Holt had worked at our school, we made her a card and gave her some flowers too to say thank you. The funniest thing was looking at all the other teachers and adults faces, they were struggling to think about working in the same place and job for 50 years, Mrs Chesney said, “ I have no idea how Mrs Holt has managed it, I have only been teaching for 17 years and I have found that tricky enough!” Can you imagine being in the same job for 50 years? Young Voices 2019
At Hatfield Woodhouse we are lucky that we have lots of extra-curricular clubs that we can take part in, some are during lunch time, whilst others are after school. One of the most popular clubs is choir, we enjoy meeting up, learning new songs and performing. Sometimes, we learn traditional songs such as hymns and Christmas carols and other times we learn more modern songs and even pop songs. We perform at all different events throughout the year in our local community. We

entertain at Christmas in a couple of residential homes, in the summer we perform at the Hatfield Church garden party, but our favourite event in the singing year is “Young Voices” at Sheffield arena. Schools from all over South Yorkshire get the opportunity to go and perform together as a large young choir, we learn the same songs (and dance moves) and perform as one. Our parents can buy tickets and come and watch us perform. It is an amazing day and night, it always gives me goose bumps every time I go, I think it’s is hearing my voice with everyone else. It really is a life changing experience and I would highly recommend if you get the opportunity to and do it. Every year there is a famous singer who performs, this year it was Tony Hadley from Spandau Ballet, he was fantastic and really made the crowd excited – especially the mums! We had enjoyed learning the songs for this event but they were even better when we all song them as an arena together, we sang “This is the Greatest Show” from The Greatest Showman (that was my favourite) we also sang songs from Billy Elliott and Moana. That night was so special and I will never forget it, also we didn’t get back to school until 10:30pm, which was a late night for me. By Tyler

Hatfield Community Library Welcome back to the library as another new year creeps upon us. Many people have remarked how fast time seems to pass these days. I don’t know if it because we are older or if it is actually passing more quickly! The decorations at home and in the library have been put away for another year so everywhere looks bare but no doubt other things will take their place. I need to find that elusive safe place where I put the photos to make way for Christmas decorations. In this new digital age most people keep their photos on phones or computers but I like to put mine in frames or albums to look through. I have had to stop putting them in frames as I had so many and hated taking old ones out to make way for new ones. So far I have resisted all pressure to get an iPhone or smart phone. I prefer interacting with and talking to people-one of the perks of working in the library and of course to read actual books. The weather is not too good for being out and about so if you are feeling bored or need some company, have a look at our activities to see if there is anything that interests you. Most are group activities but you can sit for a while and do part of a jigsaw puzzle or colouring while having a cup of tea or coffee. The Bridge Club and Games Café are for the residents of the DN7 but all are welcome and we would not turn away anyone from outside the DN7 area. If you have friends who would like to come with you bring them along. The Bridge Club is for beginners and improvers. Tuition is available and better players will help the beginners. A variety of games are played. If you like Scrabble etc but have no-one to play with join the games group. Meet Your Community. Members of the team will be in the library on the last Thursday of the month and will be able to discuss a variety of things such as: finding out how to stay independent in your own home for longer, improve your wellbeing, gain support for physical or mental health conditions or volunteering for a local organisation. Please ring to check that the community team is in. WEEKLY CLASSES - MONDAY, Rhyme Time 10:30, Children’s stories and songs. This is a fun session for pre-school children and parents/carers. Very young children are welcome. Parents can stay on afterwards and have a chat and coffee or read to their children. Refreshments are included, (Free activity). (£5 a session or £20 for 5 sessions) Computer/iPad/iPhone/tablet/smart phone. Free help available on Wednesday mornings. Please ring or call book a one to one session with David. FRIDAY, Readers’ Group on the last Friday of the month 10:30-12:30. Books are provided by the library service. (Free activity) Needles and Pins twice a month. 10:30-12:30. This is a friendly craft group which would welcome new members. New members are always welcome to these groups. Please ring the library for more information about any courses. Thorne Camera Club Happy New Year Everyone! End of year celebrations at Thorne Camera Club went well, with an invitation to Trefoil Guild members to join the fun, and judge two competitions. The Audio Visual consists of numerous photographs set to music and words, ranging from simple and straight forward to more elaborate. Several members had a go at creating one, and these were shown to the guests who chose their favourite. The winner, using a voting system, was ‘ In the Circles of my Mind’ by Graham Linley followed by ‘Clouds’ by David Ulyett . After festive refreshments, much relished mince pies and Christmas cake, the postcard competition was judged by Trefoil Guild. Members had been asked to make a representation of a postcard similar to the kind bought on holiday, and there were some excellent examples in varying degrees of creativity. The visitors were again asked to pick their favourite. This time the winner was ‘ Greetings Humans from the Animals of Woburn Safari Park’ by Lynda Ulyett. It was a very enjoyable evening to start the run up to Christmas. A social evening, with games in the form of a tombola, a quiz and bingo, was fun. Delicious pies and peas , from a local butcher’s shop, were served for supper, very much appreciated. It is possible to get too many mince pies and turkey at that time of year, so the steak pies, or cheese and onion, made a welcome change. Wath Salon is an exhibition organised by Dearne Valley Camera Club in Wath Library. Selection is from an entry of over 500 prints and digital images from all over the country. As in previous years, Thorne Camera Club was represented in the acceptances, as three members had a total of eight images between them, accepted and displayed, more than in previous years, showing the progression made by the club. Congratulations go to those members, David Ulyett, Lynda Ulyett and Lynda Rhodes. For the New Year, another non-turkey event was organised in the form of a fish and chip supper at a local Fish Bar where members, their family and friends, enjoyed a pleasant evening and Britain’s favourite dish. The talk, not surprisingly, was about looking forward to a new year, plans and resolutions, to the new Camera Club programme, and enjoying the hobby members all share, in a friendly atmosphere. The Spring Programme begins on 14 th January 2019. Why not go along if you have an interest in Photography, you will be made very welcome, Methodist Church Hall on Mondays at 7.15pm.
