HATFIELD WOODHOUSE AMATEUR GARDENING SOCIETY We started our New Year a week late at the Garden Society, meeting on the second Tuesday of the month (!4 January) instead of the first. Our speaker on this occasion was Peter Bernard with a presentation on “Trees in the Garden”. At the time of writing we had not had our meeting because of this one week later start, and so there is no report of the talk, but we will rectify that next month. Our February meeting will be back to our usual first Tuesday of the month, so on 4 February we will meet at Hatfield Woodhouse Club at 7-30pm. On this occasion the speaker will be Sarah Hopps who will be telling about “Touring the Gardens of Europe”. Sarah is a well know speaker at Garden Clubs in Yorkshire and has been a contributor on Radio York. Everybody is welcome, both members and non members.

Friends of Quarry Park After a busy 2019 the Friends have enjoyed a quieter start to 2020 so not much to report yet this year. The spells of good weather since the New Year have brought lots of visitors to Quarry Park, it has been a pleasure to see all ages enjoying everything the Park has to offer. It is heartening to see that most areas are looking clean and tidy mainly thanks to the regular users who pick up litter daily as they walk around, it shows true community spirit, a sense of pride and an appreciation of this great local facility. Many thanks to them all once again. A new feature on the Park is the addition of the way marking posts for the walking routes, they are one of the final elements of the grant funded improvement works carried out over the last few years. They have also been a collaboration between DMBC, who installed the posts, and FOQP, with one of the volunteers putting in many hours routing and painting them. Maps of the different walks can be found on the Welcome Boards at the entrances to the Park. Information includes the health benefits of walking, the length of each walk and how many steps, the estimated time to complete and the potential calories burnt. One walk is an accessible route. At this time of year when most of us resolve to get fitter a walk in the park is a good way to start! The Friends aim to highlight features that can be found on each route at different times of the year so look out for those in future editions. The next Volunteer Work Party will be on Friday 7 February from 10 a.m to 12.00. New volunteers are always made welcome. Meet at the Green Flag (near the outdoor Gym) at 10 a.m. Protective clothing and tools are provided as well as refreshments. The work parties are supported by DMBC Countryside Rangers who have a wealth of knowledge and experience. Friends of Quarry Park can be contacted by email: quarrypark@gmail.com or via the Facebook page Friends of Quarry Park. Information can also be found in the Notice Boards on the Park.

Hatfield Community Library News Item Another new year and we have started off well in the library as we have been busy. Especially on the first day back, but four of us managed to keep up with things-even managing to put all the books away. However, it is only two weeks until we close again to have the heating done One of the tasks I am not looking forward to is emptying the shed so it can be moved to put up the outside bits for the heating system. Looking on the bright side, it will be an opportunity to get rid of some rubbish that has accumulated over the years. We re-open on Monday February 3rd. Again quite a few books may be returned on that day so please bear with us if we are busy. Can I just give people polite reminder about using the car park? It is for library customers and closes when the library closes. Recently a couple of people have been locked in as they had left their cars after library closing time. Volunteers have been known to go round the neighbouring shops and dentist to save people from being locked in. On Monday, Tuesday and Friday the closing time is 4pm. On Thursday we close at 5pm during term time when the Family History groups are in. Wednesday closing is 1pm and Saturday is 12:00. Occasionally we have to shut because of a volunteer shortage on a particular day. (usually due to illness) Of course we don’t mind borrowers leaving their cars for a short while if they need to pop to the shops. Watch out for the next author event when Linda Stacey is coming along to talk about writing about heroes and villains. All our classes should have started by the beginning of February when the Yoga restarts. Most of the classes are drop in if you want to see how they are run or to have a go to see if it is for you. If you want to get out of the house and meet people, all the classes are suitable for this. I have made some good friends working in the library and other people in the groups have become friendly often giving each other lifts to the class. The Family History groups which have been running for a long time are not taking on new members at the moment but if you are interested in finding out about your family history, we can put you in touch with Sherelle, who runs them, to see if she has a suitable beginners’ group. Sadly, we will not be able to offer Yoga practitioners a heated floor after the heating has been replaced but it will still be enjoyable as Judy caters for all abilities. She also makes a range of aromatherapy products which are popular. When we re-open there will be heating in the toilet area which will most welcome in this weather. There will also be a proper baby changing unit which is be good news for those who come to our Rhyme/story time, or come to the library with young children. It is lovely when parents/Grandparents bring in children to spend some time in the library reading or playing with the toys. WEEKLY CLASSES - The art class has moved to Wednesday morning. MONDAY (In Term time only) Rhyme Time 10:30-11:30 Children’s stories and songs. This is a fun session for pre-school children and parents/carers. Very young children are welcome. The activities include songs, dough disco and crafts. Parents can stay on afterwards and have a chat and coffee or read to their children. Refreshments are included. (Free activity). Bridge 1:30pm for beginners and improvers. (free activity) TUESDAY Games café 10:30-12:30 Join us in the library to play a variety of games including Mahjong. Refreshments are provided. (Free activity). Readers’ group on the last Tuesday of the month 2:00-3:00pm. We read a variety of books and most of us have read and enjoyed books which we might otherwise have passed over on the shelf. The latest one I have enjoyed was “Eleanor Oliphant is completely fine” I would not have picked this book off the shelf but could not it down until I had finished. Books are provided by the library service. (Free activity) Art Class 10:15-12:30 Tuition from an artist is available to help beginners and experienced artists. New members are welcome. You do not have be good at art to enjoy this class. A recent member had no art experience but is turning out some great pictures. (£30 for 4 weeks) Friday. Needles and Pins twice a month. 10:30-12:30. This is a friendly craft group which would welcome new members. We run two Reading groups which are full at the moment but sometimes spaces occur so you can ring the library to see if there are places available. One is on the last Tuesday of the month in the afternoon and the other is on the last Friday of the month in the morning. New members are always welcome to these groups. Please ring the library for more information about any courses. It is important to check, particularly in the holiday times, that these courses are on. The Yoga and art classes do have a charge for tutoring. Yoga is £5 a session or 5 sessions for £20. Art £30 every 4 week. NEW BOOKS. We receive list of new books available on the library system at regular intervals. The latest list for Oct/Nov is for Audio or Spoken word books. The list contains the latest books by many popular authors which have been added to the library system. Remember if we have not got them on our shelves, we can order them from other libraries. All our audio books are free of charge as part of a special promotional offer. Tel. 842064 email hatfieldcommunitylibrary@gmail.com DMBC website

Community Together at Christmas Prior to Christmas a young lady and her father, whilst standing at the bar in the Bay Horse, suggested that it would be an idea to consider people that may be spending Christmas day alone, both within the community and beyond. She added, that perhaps a dinner might be arranged. The landlady Chris, joining in with the conversation, along with a few regulars, said that we may use her premises, i.e, the function room upstairs and the use of her kitchen. Immediately the suggestion was put into action and a group of regulars formulated the way forward ( sometimes chaotically ). Came the day around 3-30 pm the guests, 25, in total were collected/arrived and the festivities began. Downstairs in the kitchen staffed by volunteers, and ably led by the Chef, Chris Roy, (man of many talents) and supported by just about all his family, (voluntary ? not sure ! ) produced a wonderful Xmas dinner, which was enjoyed by all. Before the actual day, word had got about that Chris at the Bay Horse was intending to allow the event to take place which resulted in her being inundated with support, with goodies, from the Co-op, Asda, Dave and Sylvia, Charlottes Florists and even a Hamper from a School which remains anonymous, and even a monetary donation also given anonymously. Anyone I have failed to mention, please forgive me! This added to the occasion and their donations were distributed amongst the guests. Never being part of such a venture previously, I cannot stress, how rewarding the day was. Experiencing the joy and happiness that was exuberated and the gratitude shown by all ! All the volunteers, whether in the Kitchen, or waiting on at the tables, should be very happy with their days work and such was the success, I do believe, it will be an occasion that will be repeated in the future. Finally, a massive THANK YOU to our wonderful landlady and her family (landlady shown in the forefront of the photograph attached ), who literally, having closed the pub only 1 hour previously, joined in and added to the festivities which culminated circa 8pm. Gordon Harper.

Update re Fishlake after flooding: After the devastation of the floods on Friday 8 November 2019 which saw around 80% of properties in the village affected it has obviously been a very difficult time for all concerned. We have seen a visit from The Prime Minister, HRH The Prince of Wales and also received coverage from lots of local and national media. We are proud as a community of how we have pulled together and supported each other and we will continue to do so. We are hugely grateful for the support shown to us by neighbouring villages and we are overwhelmed by the number of message of support received from across the country. There is still a long way to go before we are anything like back to normal. We need to persist with information as to how and why this happened and to work to prevent this happening again. St Cuthbert's Church, The Old Butcher's Café and the Hare and Hounds have all done a tremendous job supporting the community and the essential/emergency workers who visited the village. Thoughts are very much with those residents who are still unable to return to their homes.

Thorne Camera Club Having Fun The New Year began as the old one ended, with club social activities to celebrate the season. First, a buffet supper with quizzes and games, and then the holiday break before starting the Spring Programme on 13th January 2020, meeting most Mondays until the end of May. A new Exhibition will be on view at Thorne Library so go along and have a look at what members do best. At the first club meeting, members share their images, with the club outing to Amsterdam the main feature. Several members and partners braved the North Sea on a mini- cruise from Hull to Rotterdam, a first for the club, as a weekend and a foreign outing. It was so enjoyable plans are afoot for another one. Amsterdam is a beautiful city, with tree lined canals, pretty houses and thousands of bikes. Of the many museums and galleries, the Anne Frank House is always popular, the Tulip Museum, of course, and the Van Gogh Centre. Members went their own ways to visit and photograph whatever interested them, on a rather damp day. A canal boat trip was recommended to see more of the city than would have been possible in one day on foot. Pancakes were on the menu for some, or a Dutch beer or two, with a sandwich, but not too much, as another evening meal was waiting back at the ship. Eating, drinking, socialising and enjoying on board entertainment made for a very enjoyable outing, in good company, although after a tiring day, and a six course dinner, some retired early to bed, to be gently rocked to sleep again, and wake in dock at Hull on an altogether brighter day. Another outing, to the illuminated gardens at Brodsworth Hall, was also very enjoyable, once the rain stopped. A lovely place at any time, but with the lights and sound effects it was magical, a photographer’s dream, maybe, but tricky to photograph. However, in the spirit of the club, more experienced helped the less experienced to come away with some decent shots. The weather does not stop ardent photographers, but it does present a challenge! If you have an interest in Photography, why not go along to a meeting. You will be made very welcome, your first visit is free, and joining fees are reduced at this point in the year. Tree-planters triumph in Hatfield Dig Volunteer tree-planters turned out in force to plant out 333 saplings at Hatfield’s Jubilee Park with three generations completing the task in just two hours. The Rotary Club of Doncaster joined forces with Friends of Jubilee Park to help improve the ecology of the park – a big favourite with walkers and skatepark scooterists – and help combat global climate change. In their lifetime trees capture tons of carbon dioxide, a so-called greenhouse gas- from the air and transform it into wood and vital oxygen. Friends’ Secretary Dave Ketteridge says: It was heart-warming to see so many young people involved brought in by their families. Two years ago we planted out 250 trees and after a scorching Summer some 150 survived. We have put them in earlier this time and expect an even better result. It is normal to lose saplings so we plan to carry on with the programme. We have had good discussions with Hatfield Town Council and plan to create new copses in to middle of the park. The Council have already provided a new seat and we will be installing a bird table nearby to add to interest.” The 20 varieties of saplings – trees and hedgerow bushes - are provided free through The Conservation Volunteers who have an office at Potteric Carr Doncaster, and financed by Ovo Energy as part of their commitment to become carbon neutral. A new threat to the trees is the number of deer coming in from nearby woodland and nibbling of the tips of young trees and stripping bark. Says Dave ”We put rabbit guards around all our new plants but once the trees outgrow these they are at risk. At first we though vandals were pulling down branches and stripping bark but then noticed bark was being nibbled and just the tips of branches being taken off. We are getting reports of roe deer at large with their young around the Motorway services area. They are beautiful creatures but can do a lot of damage. They also hide out in fields dedicated to growing maize and willow for use in eco-friendly power stations.” Friends Chairman Peter Wyatt adds: “We have put a list of proposals to the Town Council for their consideration. There are tremendous Flat Roofs, Repairs, Slates, Tiles, opportunities to develop our local park, which Guttering, Fascia’s, Chimneys. our surveys show is used daily by over a hundred Competitive Rates people. The skate park is in used constantly and is a tremendous asset to the community. I would No Job Too Small like to thank all those unsung heroes and heroines 01302 858164 who pick up litter every day, and everyone who 07427 212714 picks up after their dogs. There are a small number of people who don’t pick up and fail to Sj-roofing@mail.com realise just how much everyone else hates it”
