Welcome to the February 2024 issue of the Hatfield Arrow. This month The Hatfield Arrow is celebrating 18 years of publishing. Initially called ‘The Hatfield Flyer’ the magazine has been distributed to homes in Hatfield, Hatfield Woodhouse and Dunsville every month for 18 years!! This would not have been possible without the many local businesses that have given their support and have advertised in the magazine, some of whom have advertised every month for years! Thank you! I would also like to thank all the people who send in regular articles, readers, distributors and anyone who has at any time contributed to the production of the magazine.

Introducing Dance On Strength and Balance A new programme designed to help over 55s stay active through the power of dance

darts’ successful Dance On programme is expanding with brand new sessions aimed at fostering strength, balance and overall wellbeing for adults aged 55 and above. Supported by Get Doncaster Moving, this innovative initiative blends the joy of movement with targeted exercises to enhance stability and coordination, build confidence and reduce the risk of falls. The programme will be delivered by experienced dance artists and qualified postural stability instructors Charlotte and Alex, who will ensure that participants receive expert guidance. These lively, fun sessions are flexible and tailored to the needs of those taking part. Suitable for all abilities and mobilities, participants can take part seated or standing, with or without support. Dance On Strength and Balance is not just about physical activity; it’s also about making connections with others and building new friendships, and there is time for a cuppa and a chat after sessions. Charlotte Armitage, Dance Development Core Artist at darts said: "Dance has the incredible ability to connect mind, body, and soul. Through Dance On Strength and Balance, we're not just guiding movements; we're unlocking a world of vitality, promoting strength, balance, and a renewed sense of confidence for everyone over 55.” Led by darts, One Dance UK, the University of Leeds and Yorkshire Dance, the pioneering Dance On programme has proved to be a highly successful model, enhancing the lives of hundreds of older adults over the past seven years – many of whom who were previously deemed ‘inactive’. Participants have reported that taking part in Dance On sessions has improved their physical health as well as how happy and connected they feel to others, saying: “I have limited mobility, use a wheelchair and have COPD. However, the dance moves and exercise help with my mobility and give me a sense of freedom of movement.” Dance On Strength and Balance will run on a weekly basis for 12 weeks from Monday 22nd January 2024, with a break on 1st and 8th April for Easter. All sessions will be held in Woodfield Park Community Hall, Tickhill Road, Doncaster, DN4 8QN with time for socialising at Café Flourish afterwards. Sessions are free and no booking is required. People can just turn up and join in. For more information about Dance On, please contact amy@wearedarts.org.uk or telephone 01302 341662.

Friends of Quarry Park It’s been a very wet start to the New Year with the car park and some areas of the park being flooded at times. Thankfully, the day of our first Volunteer Work Party of 2024 was dry and most of the water had receded. We had a great turnout of 17 volunteers and 2 Council Rangers which included 3 new recruits who were eager to join in with the activities. There was plenty to do so after our briefing, we split into groups to carry out various tasks. We had some daffodil bulbs left over which didn’t take long to plant. One group set about trimming back the bramble hedge near to St Mary’s car park which had become so overgrown it was getting close to the path. Another team checked on the new saplings to ensure that the guards and straps were still in place and replaced a few of the tree stakes that had been removed. The next job was to start cutting back the many gorse bushes in that area. Our army of litter pickers did a sterling job collecting 4 large bags of rubbish along with a fire pit, rusty seat frame and several gas canisters! We finished off with much needed hot drinks and Julie’s delicious banana cake! A great start to the new year with lots planned for the coming months, including more tree planting and installing some new benches. A huge thank you to everyone who attended for your hard work. Our new volunteers enjoyed the morning and even said they will come back!! Work parties are usually held on the first Friday of each month, weather permitting. There is always plenty of work to be done, from litter picking, clearing paths and cutting back vegetation. Equipment is provided but please ensure you wear suitable clothing and footwear. The next events are scheduled for Friday 2nd February and Friday 1st March 10am – 12 noon, meet at the Green Flag. Full details will be published on our Facebook page ‘Friends of Quarry Park’ or you can email us at thequarrypark@gmail.com or call us on 07546 595144.

DONCASTER CANCER DETECTION TRUST We would like to thank everyone who visited our Memory Tree in the Frenchgate Centre before Christmas. We can now report that donations totalled £2,088 which is a fantastic amount, especially considering the economic situation. Our grateful thanks also go to Frenchgate management and to our lovely volunteers who helped on the stall. The Charity Christmas Concert held at Doncaster Minster raised a wonderful £1,784.14 for us, which included £128.74 from the Memory Tree inside the Minster. We are enormously grateful to Dorothy Miller, the Doncaster Wheatsheaf Singers, Hatfield & Askern Colliery Band and the Co-op for arranging the evening. The Minster was full, which was a tribute to all their hard work in making this such a popular annual event. We are currently in discussions with Doncaster Royal Infirmary regarding cancer-related equipment they need. We hope to bring you more news in the next issue. If you would like to fundraise on our behalf we would be very pleased to hear from you. Our details are: 22 Wood Street, Doncaster DN1 3LW (entrance by the side of Kerry Gough Florists), first floor (lift available), Room 104. Tel. 01302 325029. Email: info@dcdt.co.uk. Website: dcdt.co.uk. As the office is not fully manned it is best to Email or telephone in advance if you are thinking of coming to see us. We are always looking for volunteers to help in various ways. If you have office skills, would like to join our committee or help on stalls at various events, please do get in touch with us. You will be made very welcome.

Unfortunately, I have to report that burglary offences are continuing at houses, and I have noticed an increase in shed and garage burglaries. Pedal cycles continue to be targeted and an increasing number of these are being stolen from sheds. The demand for and use of electrically assisted pedal cycles is growing and these can be expensive, even the basic machine can cost a few hundred pounds. Reports of these machines being stolen are appearing on local crime figures. If you have purchased any type of pedal cycle at Christmas for yourself or as a present for someone else, don’t let it be stolen from a shed. Sheds are by design not a secure environment to store valuable property. If all else fails, thieves will remove a shed roof and steal property that way. Replace screws in hinges with clutch head or non-return screws. Add a couple of additional hinges to support the original hinges fitted. Fit a substantial padlock and reinforce that part of the door to which the lock is fitted with a sheet of 16-gauge sheet steel. Use a coach bolt to secure the padlock and hasp to the shed. Use a ground anchor and cable to secure your property inside the shed. Ensure the anchor is securely located in the ground and not simply fastened to the shed itself. If you do not enter the shed at night, why would you need a light inside? Usually, the only people going into sheds at night are thieves. Consider fitting an alarm; Battery operated alarms are not expensive and can be quite effective. JNE Security manufacture a battery-operated portable alarm that sends a signal to a receiver up to 200 metres away or a text message to a mobile phone. Both are simple methods of alerting a householder that someone has entered their shed or other outbuilding. The devices are cheap and further information can be found at http://personalalarms.com/acatalog/shed-alarms.html Burglary prevention advice is available on the South Yorkshire police website at http://www.southyorkshire.police.uk/sites/ default/files/4-9-14%20Janes%20approved% 20artwork.pdf If you have any questions you can contact Eamonn Larkin the Doncaster Police crime reduction officer via email eamonn.larkin@southyorkshire.police.uk
