Community News I am sorry to have to report that burglary offences are continuing at houses and I have noticed an increase in shed and garage burglaries. Pedal cycles continue to be targeted and an increasing number of these are being stolen from sheds. If you have purchase a pedal cycle at Christmas for yourself or as a present for someone else, don’t let it be stolen from a shed. Sheds are by design not a secure environment to store valuable property. If all else fails, thieves will remove a shed roof and steal property that way. Replace screws in hinges with clutch head or non-return screws. Add a couple of additional hinges to support the original hinges fitted. Fit a substantial padlock and reinforce that part of the door to which the lock is fitted with a sheet of 16-gauge sheet steel. Use a coach bolt to secure the padlock and hasp to the shed. Use a ground anchor and cable to secure your property inside the shed. Ensure the anchor is securely located in the ground and not simply fastened to the shed itself. If you do not enter the shed at night, why would you need a light inside? Usually the only people going into sheds at night are thieves. Consider fitting an alarm. Battery operated alarms are not expensive and can be quite effective. JNE Security manufacture a battery operated portable alarm that sends a signal to a receiver up to 200 metres away or a text message to a mobile phone. Both are simple methods of alerting a householder that someone has entered their shed or other out building. The devices are cheap and further information can be found at http://personalalarms.com/acatalog/shed-alarms.html Burglary prevention advice can be found on the South Yorkshire police website at http://www.southyorkshire.police.uk/sites/default/files/4-9-14%20Janes%20approved%20artwork.pdf If you have any questions you can contact Eamonn Larkin the Doncaster Police crime reduction officer via email eamonn.larkin@southyorlks.pnn.police.uk or telephone 01302 385869
Doncaster Pathfinders Walking Club Doncaster Pathfinders Walking Club walk the 1st or 2nd Sunday in every month and we welcome new members. We are not a competitive bunch and our walks are for fun and enjoyment of our beautiful countryside. All our walks are led by experienced leaders and we offer two each month, one of around 8 miles or a slightly longer one of 11 to 13 miles. We set off from Waterdale in Doncaster by private coach and travel to the Yorkshire Dales, the Peak District or other equally lovely places. On 9th December we enjoyed a moderate walk in North Nottinghamshire and as is our Christmas tradition our walk was followed by a carvery at The Boat Inn at Hayton. If you fancy joining us, our January walk takes place on the 13th and we will be walking from Harewood to Otley. If you can't make it in January why not join us on 10th February when we are off to The Peak District. It`s a great way to meet like-minded people, enjoy our countryside and get a little bit fitter at the same time! For more information, you can find us at http://www.doncasterpathfinders.org.uk/ or search Facebook for Doncaster Pathfinders Walking Club

Hatfield Community Library The library has had a successful year. We put on many children’s events which have all been free of charge and adult events which have mainly been free. New members joined during the year and new volunteers came forward to help us to provide the community with a good service. We ran lots of classes/groups where people could learn new skills, socialise or keep fit. The Reading group books have given rise to lots of energetic discussions of some of the books read by the members. Occasionally a book has not appealed to members and they have not finished it but they have always been interested to hear what other people have thought about the book. Some people have a lot to say others only want to add a bit to the discussion which is fine. The Readers’ group makes me read books which I would otherwise ignore and to my surprise, I have enjoyed most of them. If you would like to join the Tuesday group, please come along after Christmas. The Pins and Needles group are a sociable craft group who have a chat while working on their projects. They meet twice a month and always welcome new members. The library is a lovely warm place to sit, natter, knit, sew etc. The Art group attracted new members this year. They were all beginners who have been delighted to find that that they can paint. This is a very friendly group which always makes new members welcome even down to sharing art materials if necessary. Graham, the tutor, shows us how to use the right techniques and colour mixes etc. Everyone manages to produce a good picture, many of which are on display in the library until finished. It is a really satisfying feeling to complete a painting which actual look like it is supposed to. This is a fee paying class. Fees £30 for 4 weeks The Yoga groups, led by Judy, have helped to keep many people fit and supple during the year. The relaxing session at the end on a warm floor is wonderful. Judy caters for all abilities in her classes so it really is Yoga for all. She also makes potions and creams etc. for aromatherapy treatments. This is a fee paying class. Fees £5 per session or £20 for 5 sessions. The Monday Rhyme and Story time has entertained children and parents/carers with songs, dough disco and activities. I have occasionally joined in with a particularly catchy tune. If you are a carer for children or grandchildren, bring them along to this enjoyable session. Two new groups have been established to encourage the residents of DN7 to join in with others and have an enjoyable time. These are the Bridge sessions for beginners and improvers and the Games Café. (see photo) Bridge for Beginners and Improvers has a volunteer tutor who has played bridge for longer than I have lived (and I am no Spring chicken!) so he knows a lot about bridge. The Games Café provides a variety of games including card games and scrabble. Players can enjoy a chat while playing. The Funding/ event manager is applying for funding for new games and a jigsaw table which can be left in the library for anyone to have a go. The jigsaw will be left out for anyone to have a go. We are also collecting complete jigsaws to have a Jigsaw Swap in the library. People can come along and swap a complete jigsaw for another one. Computer, iPad, iPhone, androids. A reminder that we are still holding computer/iPad or phone etc. tuition sessions on Wednesday mornings. David who runs the sessions is very kind and patient so don’t feel embarrassed to ask about what might seem to be the simplest of tasks. (I’m

Not). There are half our slots for one to one help. Ring or call in to the library to book an appointment. We have some mini iPad covers for sale at a knockdown price of £5. Of course none of this would be possible without the volunteers who run the events, work on the desk or make the refreshments for the groups, put the books back on the shelves and keep the books ordered and tidy. Or indeed you the borrowerswe could not carry on without your support. The more books you take out the longer we can keep going. The more events you support the more we will try to find new things for you enjoy. Borrowers also help by donating books to sell or send the revival and by buying our for sale books We do need to raise money to run events/funding co-ordinator works hard to find funding for the events so we can offer a variety of free events. She also works with the treasurer to keep the books in order as we have to be accountable for all monies received and spent. All our officers are volunteers who put in a bit extra to keep the library running smoothly and within DMBC parameters. The Christmas Fayre was a great success. Thank you to all the people who came along to support us. We raised £431. The raffle contributed £200 of the amount taken. As we had forty prizes, it was well worth buying tickets. Thank you to everyone who contributed prizes and congratulations to those who won them. Our book and cake stalls did very well. Some excellent books were sold for a bargain 20p per book. The ladies and gentleman who did the baking are also to be congratulated as not many cakes were left. (I think I was partly responsible for that) When I am in the library, I often have a pleasant surprising experience as I did the other day when a lady from my home village of Newbiggin-by- the -sea came in. It was lovely to have a chat about home and find out we both went to the Colliery school. We could even remember the names of some of the teachers. I have no excuse for not remembering one teacher as she was my aunty-which by the way did not get me any special treatment! All it remains for me to do is wish you all a Happy Christmas and a Joyous New Year. Contact Details. Tel. 842064 Email hatfieldcommunitylibrary@gmail.com

Hatfield Woodhouse Primary School By: Lloyd, Lydia, Emily and Masie December is an exciting time of year in our school, we start preparing for Christmas with lots of traditions and exciting activities such as, preparing for the Christmas concerts in Key Stage one and Key Stage two, Christingle, our annual advent calendar collection and instant Christmas to name but a few! One of our pupils decided that as part of their Archbishop of York, ‘Young Leaders’ award they would collect advent calendars for children we are less fortunate than they are so a letter was sent out to the rest of school asking for donations. We did amazingly well! All the advent calendars were given to Thorne foodbank so that when families picked up their food parcels, their children could get an advent calendar and enjoy the run up to Christmas too. This went down very well with pupils, parents the food bank and families. We collected a whopping 102! This year Foundation Stage (Nursery and Reception – our 3 – 5 year olds) as well as Key stage one put on a fantastic performance of ‘Prickly Hay’. It put a smile on everyone’s face because of the costumes, the singing and the wonderful acting. The story is from the point of view of a stable boy and his friend a pet shrew, they worked together to prepare the stable, little did they know they would have such an important visitor - baby Jesus. Unfortunately, the hay they used was very spikey, prickly and uncomfortable and they spend the whole show trying to sort it out. Everyone from the Governors, to parents, grandparents and Key Stage two loved it. Well done! Christingle is celebrated by Christians in the run up to Christmas, in year five, we had a go at making our own. In R.E. we have been looking at the meaning of Christmas for Christians, as part of this we had a lesson on the tradition of making Christingles. We found out the meaning behind each item used: orange represents the world, red ribbon or tape can be the blood or love of Christ, the four cocktail sticks with fruit and sweets depict the four season (winter, spring, Summer and Autumn) and the candle represents the light of Jesus, guiding all Christians. We made our Christingles and wrote up instructions on how to make them too. What do you think? This year is the 50th year of the Christingle. We had our amazing Christmas Fair run by the PTA of Hatfield Woodhouse, this year was bigger and better than ever before. As a school we use this as an enterprise event and each class

work to make and produce something to sell, such as snowman soup (hot chocolate), reindeer food, edible reindeers, baubles and candy cones. Parents, staff and pupils all man the stalls and work together, there is a real feeling of true Christmas spirit. All the money raised is used for school projects, we can’t thank the PTA and all the pupils and parents enough for their support. Finally, Key Stage Two Christmas performance, this year we decided to do something a little bit different. As a school we work hard to stay fit and healthy, but we struggle with dance, so we bought in a specialist dance teacher, to teach each class a dance to a Christmas hit. The show is linked together with a family all sat down after Christmas dinner getting ready to watch Christmas Top of the Pops, each member of the family explains why their song is their favourite Christmas song and then the classes come on and dance as though they were on Top Personal Attention From Jessie of the Pops. Every pupil has taken part and learnt Now Practising Part-Time a dance, working on timing, steps, team work and Tuesday Wednesday and acting skills. It seemed to be enjoyed by pupils and Thursday Mornings Only liked by parents. That’s a brief insight into some of the Christmas happenings at Hatfield Woodhouse Primary Footcare Advice & Treatment School from pupils in Year 5 Lion Class. Community News HATFIELD WOODHOUSE AMATEUR GARDENING SOCIETY On Monday December 4 the Society celebrated a successful year with its Christmas Social. We were royally entertained by a group of four gentlemen who call themselves Quarto. In two sessions of almost an hour each we heard a succession of funny stories, folk songs, songs which were amusing parodies on well known hymns and songs, and jokes. This group is not just amusingly funny, it is belly laugh funny. In between the sessions we enjoyed a splendid buffet supper. Before the start of the second half the President, John Brown, presented Terry Head with the President’s Shield. The Shield is presented to the person who gains most points in total at the past year’s Spring and Autumn Shows. The next meeting will be on Tuesday 8 January at Hatfield Woodhouse Club. Please note that this is the second Tuesday of the month, the first Tuesday, our usual meeting day, is a Bank Holiday, New Years Day. Everybody is welcome, both members and non members.

Sunday League cricket returns to HTCC! We are pleased to announce that we have been accepted into the Barnsley and District Sunday League for season 2019! This is seen as a key part of the clubs continued development and will give some of our juniors a chance to experience senior cricket in a competitive league alongside experienced players but in a more relaxed environment. The Barnsley League is an open league so players from other clubs wishing to play a few games on a Sunday are more than welcome to get in touch and join us. Our aim is to make it an enjoyable and social Sunday afternoon for players and spectators alike. Junior Nets open to all existing players and newcomers. The juniors will start their training for the forthcoming season on Monday 18th February 6:008:00pm at Hungerhill School. The club will be entering teams at Under 9's, 11's and 13's in Season 2019, All our coaches are ECB Level 2 qualified with first aid certificates and are DBS checked. If your child would like to join in the fun and help us build on last seasons successes contact Richard on 07740215350. Hatfield Ladies make an impact in South Yorkshire Softball League! Whilst the men are preparing for their season the ladies have been having a successful time in the Women's Indoor Softball Six a Side League. They finished the season with three straight wins, including a victory over league champions Rockingham CC. The ladies finished 2nd in the league which was a fantastic achievement given they were all beginners to the sport prior to the season. They certainly made an impact in the league awards with Julie Clegg winning the Best Batter award and youngster Amy Jordan winning the league's Most Valuable Player award. All the players have enjoyed their first ever experience of cricket and cannot speak highly enough of the fun and great spirit in which the games are played. There will be a new season starting in the New Year, if you'd like to get involved drop us an email at hatfieldtown@outlook.com and one of the team will be in touch.

Pupils Create Happy Farm at Coppice School Caroline Flint joined pupils at Coppice School to see how they have given new homes to unwanted animals at the school’s growing farm. Caroline was given a tour of the school by Deputy Head, Natalie Swearman. But the highlight of the day was when pupils showed Caroline their farm; with a goat, two pigs, chickens and a family of guinea pigs. Said Caroline: “Everything I saw at Coppice today, with Cllr Derek Smith, showed a school with creative and patient staff, finding new ways to help these pupils understand their world and gain valuable life skills. “The pupils love the farm, which is run on a shoe-string thanks to constant fundraising by the school. This past year, staff ran a three peaks challenge to raise thousands to keep the farm in business. “And with the pupils support, they have happy animals: including pregnant goat; pigs that are gaining weight; a thriving family of guinea pigs and new chicks – a sure sign of happy animals. “Coppice School has every reason to be proud; not just because of its Ofsted, but because of the ways its committed staff enrich the lives of these young people, who face challenges every day of their life.” Deputy Head, Natalie Swearman said: “We teach skills through interesting, meaningful and imaginative ways, which engages our students and enables them to learn. Our approaches are often quite inventive, and this year we have been focusing on building and developing ‘Coppice Farm and Gardens’. Dan Wainman is one of our Teaching Assistants and has been the driving force behind creating the farm. We aim to become an “eco school” that is part of the community, with gardens, allotments, a mini-farm, an outdoor classroom and a café that is open to the public. We are fundraising to further develop this project so that it is an outstanding learning provision for our students. Their families, our staff and local businesses have been extremely supportive of our new venture.” You can donate to support Coppice Farm at https://www.justgiving.com/crowdfunding/ coppicefarmgardens?utm_term=QP6WKjr2r
