Community News RETIRED - ACTIVE - BORED If the answer is “YES” to the above then DU3A is for you. Doncaster U3A is a non-profit charitable organisation which provides activities and interest groups for retired and semi-retired people in and around Doncaster. We have been operating for 27 years and currently have around 300 members. We offer more than 30 interest groups ranging from “active” groups such as walking, tenpin bowling and walking cricket, to more sedentary groups such as languages, history, quizzes and art. The groups are all led by our members, for our members. Since the end of March 2020, most of these groups have been unable to meet at their usual venues, however, using digital technology, we formed various groups on Zoom. This proved to be highly successful, with about 16 groups meeting this way. Over the last couple of months many of our groups have restarted meeting up, at their various venues. If you are interested in knowing more information our website is: https://u3asites.org.uk/doncaster or to speak to someone please telephone 07735436176.

FRIENDS OF HATFEILD CHURCH BUILDING TRUST. The Friends were very happy with our Pre-Loved Jewellery sales at Hatfield Community Library Christmas Fayre on Fri 3rd & Sat 4th Dec. Customers swarmed around our table which was groaned under the weight of all those lovely sparkly things which were just waiting to be snapped up for Christmas gifts or that special occasion. Quite a few people bought multiple gems, leaving with their bags full & smiles on their faces. Thanks to them all for helping us to raise another £77 for the maintenance of our magnificent Church building. How gorgeous did it look when the tower Christmas lights were turned on to gasps of delight throughout the library.... Credit to the library staff for organising & manning the event. Wishing all our Friends & supporters a happy & safe 2022.

HATFIELD WOODHOUSE AMATEUR GARDENING SOCIETY The Society had a great end to a horrible year on Tuesday 7 December. We had an early celebration of Christmas with entertainment and community singing featuring and led by the Fishlake Choir. Almost 50 members and guests enjoyed a lovely evening, broken at half time by a sumptuous buffet supper provided by Brenda Batty, Hope that your gardens did not suffer too much from the recent two “Great Storms”. The worst that seemed to happen around us was the amount of dead leaves left in the garden after both events, and I’ve not personally seen any badly damaged trees locally. But it did bring to mind that leaves appear to be staying on trees and bushes longer this year. I’d have expected all the leaves to have fallen by the end of November, but our wisteria only started to yellow at the end of the first week in December and still has most of its leaves despite the storms. We have had a relatively mild October and November, maybe that’s something to do with it. Now back to the Society’s programme. After Christmas we will start our normal run of events, all things being equal. Our Programme Secretary has engaged excellent speakers for next year, starting off with Sarah Hopps whose subject will be “Right Plant, Right Place”. As usual we meet at Hatfield Woodhouse Club. The meeting will commence at 7-30pm and everybody is welcome, members and non members alike. We look forward to seeing you there. It's that time of year when we are looking forward to the warmer summer times and getting back into the swing of things at indoor net sessions. The Women and Girls over 13 are currently training each Monday evening at Trinity Academy, Thorne. From Monday 7th February we then revert to junior training at the same venue. 6:00-7:00pm Under 9's (School years 3/4) 7:00-8:00pm Under 11's/13's (School years 5-8) 8:00-9:00pm Under 15's (School years 9-10) From Wednesday 9th February 7:00-8:00pm it is School year 11 and above with Senior Men's training. It all takes place with fully qualified and DBS cleared coaches and volunteers. If your child would like to come along to any of the sessions feel free to turn up at the relevant time or contact us at hatfield.towncc@outlook.com or drop us a message through our Facebook page'

Friends of Quarry Park

The Quarry Park volunteers met on Friday 3rd December for the monthly work party. There were eight of us this time plus support from two DMBC staff. Gareth, a representative from The Conservation Volunteers working with the Doncaster Green Space Network also came along to see first-hand how our work parties run and to provide information on how we might be supported in future activities. Three of the volunteers carried out litter picking, with two covering the perimeter pathways where the greater amount of discarded items often tend to be found. We collected two full bags of litter this time, as well as a couple of larger items. It’s always really heartening when members of the public stop to tell us that they actually notice how litter free the park is. Two more volunteers tackled lopping and cutting back vegetation to keep pathways clear, which is one of our regular work party activities. The other focus of the day was the installation of the new memorial bench, sponsored by grants from the DMBC Elected Members Ward Budget and the Rotary Club of Doncaster and St George’s. It’s sited on the right coming from the car park on St Mary’s Road, facing up towards the flower meadow, and is dedicated to NHS frontline workers and everyone affected by the Covid 19 pandemic. We hope that it will provide park users with somewhere to pause and reflect, as well as enjoying the views across the park. The pictures show the bench as it arrived and, after two hours’ hard work by the DMBC staff and three of our volunteers, how it looks on completion. Many thanks to the DMBC staff for their help and for providing all the relevant tools needed to ensure its safe and secure installation, and to our sponsors for funding it. The Friends have recently received confirmation that two more of our funding bids have been successful, namely a DMBC Members’ Ward Grant and one from Hatfield Town Council. These funds are very much appreciated and will allow us to take forward some more planned projects in the New Year. Work parties are usually held on the first Friday of each month but at the time of going to press, we’re not sure whether there will be one in January so if anyone is interested in coming along to help, please check for details of the next date via the links below. Equipment is provided but it’s advisable to have sturdy footwear and gloves. There’s always plenty of work to be done, from litter picking to clearing paths and cutting back vegetation. We meet in the car park at the end of St Mary’s Road, Dunsville at 10.00am. For more information, please email us on thequarrypark@gmail.com or message our Facebook page ‘Friends of Quarry Park’. Finally, we would like to wish all Quarry Park users a happy and hopeful New Year.

Hatfield Community Library I can hardly believe that I have just put 2022 at the top of this newsletter. Where has the year gone? It is only a few days since I finished the December article so there is not too much to write about. However, we have had two events which took place on December 4th and 5th. On December the 4th we held our usual Christmas Fayre in conjunction with the switching on of the Church lights. Looking across from the library, there is a lovely old-world scenario which encompasses the Bay Horse, the house next to it and the church tower. It is always a lovely view, but the Christmas lights make it even prettier. Back to the Fayre. There were lots of stalls from which to buy some Christmas presents or to indulge those people with a sweet tooth. I failed miserably in keeping my grandchildren and their two cousins from spending nearly all their money on the two chocolate tombola stalls and chocolate bingo game. In my defence, I was busy with other things. Judy’s aromatherapy stall was popular. She makes all her soaps etc. I bought some of her lovely rose soap as stocking presents. The other stalls Included bird boxes and bird tables which sold well, Christmas wreathes, jewellery and lots of other gifts. The book stall also did well. Even though we sold a lot of books, there were so many that there are still some left, which are still in the library. Most of the books are in pristine condition. You might want to try a new author so 30p for a paperback or£1 for a hardback is not too much to risk. I would like to thank everyone who supported the library by coming to the Christmas Fayre and for wearing facemasks. Those who came without one bought one at the door so thank you for that. On December 5th we held our Drama Night. This was not as well attended as usual, but it was awful weather and perhaps people were being more cautious in the light of a new strain of covid being detected. Everyone again wore masks and the windows were open. The acting group were affected as two of their members had covid and one had had an accident so there had to be some re-adjustment in the programme. As the title of the evening was “Education, Education, Education,” all the excerpts were connected to this. The cast coped very well and provided an entertaining variety of scenes. The audience were at first surprised to be treated like naughty children but soon realised the Kevin Spencer was actually performing a scene from a book. We were all taken back to our school days. This was followed by a scene from Adrian Mole’s diary, ”David Copperfield,”” Zigga Zagga,” which was a more modern play, a visit to a posh girls boarding school from “Daisy Pulls it Off,” a school scene from Alan Bennet’s “All Our Lives” and of course a nursery experience with Joyce Grenfell. After the refreshment break, we were treated to an act from “Educating Rita” which is the play at Cast in the new year. Because it was a longer scene, the audience were drawn in and left wanting more at the end of the scene. The library made a total of £651 all of which will be used to provide more free activities for children and make any improvements to our library experience. Two local history mysteries were cleared up in November. As I was browsing through Ben Brown’s book, I found a picture of a pub which I mentioned in a previous article. It was called the Spotted Bull and I wasn’t sure

where it was-now I know. One of our borrowers had noticed a picture of part of Crookesbroom Lane in Ben Brown’s “Old Hatfield- A Pictorial History.” He was not sure which part of Crookesbroom it was. Our Borrower thought she had recognised it. This is her explanation. “Just after the bend, the High School road bends to the right. This straight stretch after Roseberry Avenue now has bungalows on the left side and a new Georgian style terrace called Broom Court opposite. The two big houses in the distance were demolished. The one on the left for two identical detached houses and the one on the right was replaced by apartments.” WEEKLY CLASSES MONDAY, Bridge 1pm for beginners and improvers. (free activity) TUESDAY, Games café 10:00-12:30 Join us in the library to play a variety of games including Mahjong. Refreshments are provided for the small charge of £1.50. (Free activity). Readers’ groups on the last Tuesday of the month 2-3;30 or the last Friday of the month at 10:30 We read a variety of books and most of us have read and enjoyed books which we might otherwise have passed over on the shelf. The latest one I have enjoyed was “Where the Crawdads sing.” By Delia Owens. I have not finished the book yet so I reserve judgement. Books are provided by the library service. (Free activity) Yoga 6:30-8pm Gentle Hatha Yoga £6 WEDNESDAY Art Class 10:15-12:30 Tuition from an artist is available to help beginners and experienced artists. New members are welcome. You do not have be good at art to enjoy this class. A recent member had no art experience but is turning out some great pictures. (£30 for 4 weeks). Yoga (gentle/chair yoga) 3:30-5pm £6 Friday, Pins and Needles twice a month. 10:30-12:30. This is a friendly craft group which would welcome new members. We are still trying to find a volunteer to run a Mum and Toddler story time session, if anyone is interested. To contact the library Tel. 842063

Hatfield Woodhouse Primary School News Hi everyone! It’s Janson, Lola, Ellie and Grayson here. We wish you all a very Happy New Year and hope that you have all enjoyed a lovely Christmas with family and friends. New topics We are all just beginning brand new topics in school. We will update you on how we are getting along with these, next month! TT Rockstars competition We love using TT Rockstars. Mrs Chesney, our maths lead in school, set us the challenge of seeing who could get to the top of the times table leader board in school. Bentley in Y4 won and Edward and Isaac came 2nd and 3d. Mrs Chesney told us, “I am very proud of all the children who took part and also of the winners.” Bentley told us, “I’m really happy I won.” Edward told us, “I was thrilled to win 2nd place.” We also took part in a ‘times table-off’ competition where prizes were given to the person in each class who knew the most times table facts. We had to go all the way up to x13 and x14 times tables to decide a winner in Y5! Reading book displays The teachers in school have been working hard on our reading book displays in the corridors. We are trying to promote some of our non-fiction and fiction books to entice the children to read them. We have attached some photos for you, what do you all think? The Muffin Fairy We have something called the ‘Muffin Fairy’ in our school where, once a week the Muffin Fairy- Kirsty, our fabulous chef- hands out one muffin to each class and the teacher decides who to give it to. It could be someone who has tried really hard all week, or someone that has helped someone, or done something really special that week. Welcome back! We welcome back Mrs Burnet Smith this term as she is now back from maternity to teach her Y4 class. We hope she has a lovely term in school.

Thorne Camera After the first few meetings since the restrictions of Covid were lifted there is a new enthusiasm within the membership. This enthusiasm was present when the club held a 'Photo Clinic' when members brought photographs for a critique from other members in order to improve their photography. The photographs, laid out on tables, with members formed into small groups circulating around the tables discussing the merits each photograph leaving notes on each which they thought would improve the photograph. 'Still Life' is not every ones 'cup of tea' and on our 'Studio Night' members set up miniature studios complete with lighting and 'Still Life' sets for all members to photograph or to rearrange to suit their artistic requirements. Members interacted with the challenge of the evening and discussed the intricacies of the miniature 'Light studios' that the members brought. Our guest speaker for the month was David Hewson who provided a excellent lecture on the 'Successful Wild Life Photography'. David presented a series of prints of birds and animals with a detailed explanation of how and where the image was taken. The lecture concluded with projected images that included a series of tips and advice on taking wild life images followed by questions from the members. The lecture was extremely well received by the members who will go out and try to emulate the images shown by David utilising all the information and tips provided. Enthusiasm was again evident on our 'Challenge Night' where members brought their laptops and were given three images to work their magic through their editing programmes and provided a varied and inspirational interpretation of the images. Our second print competition themed 'Two Linked Images' provided a diverse range of subjects for the members to judge. The members choice were first Terry Lockwood with Itchy “Back” Bacon and Back Bacon, second Brian Kirsopp with Ludo 1 and Ludo 2 and third Bob Allen with First Snow- Peak District 1 and First Snow- Peak District 2. Our spring programme commenced in January and we welcome any of the readers of our column interested in photography of whatever experience to join us on Monday evenings at 7.15pm at the Methodist Chapel Hall. For more information please email Terry at cameraclubthorne@gmail.com. The Thorne Camera Club send belated Christmas Greetings to all members and readers of Arrow Publications and wish you all a Happy and Prosperous New Year. MONTY'S MONTHLY TIP In order to minimise camera shake, the shutter speed should be set to 1/Focal Length ie Focal Length 250mm shutter speed set at 1/250sec.
