Mining with our Year 3s. At Travis St Lawrence CE Primary School, we are always excited about visiting new places and experiencing exciting adventures. This term, our year 3 classes have already conducted 2 nature walks in the local area (both wet and windy) and have now ventured further afield. In November, our year 3 children visited the National Coal Mining Museum in Wakefield. This visit was to support their learning linked to the local area and coal mining. The children enjoyed exploring the museum and discovered lots of interesting facts linked to coal mining. They enjoyed the hands-on experience of turning on the lamps, moving machinery and dressing up as miners from different periods of time. Whilst in the museum the children also were able to explore life in the mine. They were fascinated to find out about children of their age and the pit ponies. During the trip, the children were able to experience going down the mine themselves. They conquered their fears and entered the cage to take them to the bottom of the mine. Whilst in the mine, the children travelled through time starting with the Victorian times and making their way back to modern times. They saw how lighting had changed and the development of the Davy lamp, and how explosives were used. They enjoyed seeing the bigger machinery and figuring out how it got down there! "I liked it when the man told us about the mine. I learnt that if you don't shut the door you could cause an explosion. I was scared when we first went down the mine," Carter. "When we went, I found out about the lights. They made different lights like candle light in the olden days," Josh. "It was fun and a bit scary. I was scared of the dark. I thought rats were going to come out. Little boys and girls had to work down the mine. I don't think I would have liked to," Imogen. "We had to go down the mine in a small lift called a cage. It was a bit scary." Lulu. We are so proud of the children and the way that they were ambassadors for our school. We look forward to sharing our next adventures with you.

HATFIELD WOODHOUSE AMATEUR GARDENING SOCIETY 2023 has been a good year for the Society with extremely good attendances at our Tuesday meetings, a Summer Outing to Capesthorne Hall near Macclesfield, and our two Shows, in Spring and Autumn. The Spring Show this year featured a Special Class, sponsored by Duncan Hedley Carpets, in which members of the Society each grew a pot of daffodils using bulbs supplies by Duncan Hedley. This was a huge success and there will be something similar in the 2024 Spring Show which will be sponsored by Lee Plevey. On Tuesday 5 December the Society held its annual Christmas Party for members and guests, Once again this was an extremely enjoyable event for all those who attended. In addition to our usual excellent buffet supper, the musical entertainment really set the evening off. So we are now thinking of 2024, how time flies. Because the first Tuesday of the month is so close to the New Year Bank Holiday, January’s meeting will be held on the SECOND Tuesday of the month. That means that the next meeting of the Society will be on Tuesday 9 January at Hatfield Woodhouse Club commencing at 7-30pm. The Speaker will be Lee Plevey. Everybody is welcome to our meetings, members and non members alike.

Friends of Quarry Park Our Volunteer Work Party on 1st December was a very cold and frosty day and when most people would have stayed at home, our diehard volunteers and CDC Rangers gathered on the park to plant trees! Well, it was National Tree Week! The Friends have purchased 34 2m saplings of mixed native varieties (Hornbeam, Field Maple, Crab Apple, Rowan and Lime) from Thorpe Trees Nr York who are UK Plant Healthy certified. Vulcan Renewables Community Funding Scheme has been very generous in funding the purchase and we were delighted to have Ross Taylor who manages the scheme join us for the morning. Ross soon got to work helping with digging, planting and inserting the tree supports. He was very interested in the park and what it offers the local community and the work the volunteers do every month, and it was great for everyone to meet him. I think he particularly enjoyed the tea and cake at the end of the session! It is massively important for us to receive funding to enable the group to continue with the projects we undertake to improve the park for everyone who uses it and to provide food and habitat for wildlife, and we are enormously grateful to Ross and Vulcan Renewables for this grant. We were also ably assisted by HTC Mayor Lee Pitcher and Councillor Glynis Smith who planted several trees. Lee also presented the Friends with a virtual cheque from the Hatfield Town Council Grant which funded our recent, very successful, Coffee Morning. Huge thanks to Hatfield Town Council. There were 18 attendees on the day which, considering the freezing temperatures, is amazing. We had done some preparation work beforehand but there was still plenty to do: digging holes, planting the tree saplings, watering in (with collected rainwater) inserting support stakes and flexible ties. Lastly, we finished off with tree guards and mulch mats, which contain nutrients and will biodegrade, around each one. Paul was our Team Leader on the day, and he did a sterling job of planning the project, making sure everything was prepared and organising everyone. All the volunteers worked hard and most even stayed on at the end to enjoy refreshments with cakes and mince pies. Thank you to everyone who took part in our tree planting project, and we look forward to seeing the trees flourish in the years to come. We would like to end by wishing everyone a Merry Christmas. All our volunteers have done an amazing job throughout the year, and we hope to see everyone in 2024. Work parties are usually held on the first Friday of each month, weather permitting. There is always plenty of work to be done, from litter picking, clearing paths and cutting back vegetation. Equipment is provided but please ensure you wear suitable clothing and footwear. The next events are scheduled for Friday 5th January and Friday 2nd February 10am – 12 noon, meet at the Green Flag. Full details will be published on our Facebook page ‘Friends of Quarry Park’ or you can email us at thequarrypark@gmail.com or call us on 07546 595144.

Domestic burglary is a nasty crime, it can leave victims frightened, anxious and afraid in their own homes. Some victims feel that they have no option but to move house to escape these feelings following a burglary. These feelings can be heightened if the burglary occurs at certain times of year, such as holidays, birthdays and around Christmas. It is heart breaking to read of burglaries occurring before Christmas with thieves stripping houses of presents especially if children’s toys are taken. As we approach Christmas, it is a good time assess the security of your home. If your security does require upgrading, you may want to request security devices for your home as a Christmas present. Check that your door locks comply with security standards BS 3621 for mortice locks and rim locks on wooden doors and either TS007 3 star or SS312 Diamond standard on Euro profile cylinders in upvc doors. Upgrade your locks now to reduce the chances of becoming a burglary victim. If you have doors or windows that are particularly weak, replace the locks and consider fitting a locking device called a sashjammer. These can be fitted on inward or outward opening doors and windows. Look at simple but effective methods to deter burglars. Many people leave a light on when the home is empty at night. Coupled with a plug-in timer, it gives the impression that someone is in the house. Another simple device to make it appear that the house is occupied is a TV simulator. This is a small unit that emits a light which is similar in colour to the light emitted from a television. Basic units costing less than £7.00 are battery operated and emit a single colour. More expensive units emit a flickering light and wok on a timer which can vary the times it is operated. A range of these devices can be found by searching online. If you purchase expensive electrical items at this time of year, be aware that by leaving the empty box alongside your recycling bin, you are advertising the purchase to potential burglars. If you can take the box to a recycling centre and deposit it there. While it is tradition to leave Christmas presents around the Christmas tree, it also places the gifts together and if they can be seen by someone looking through the window from outside, it may increase the chances of a burglary. Take a few simple precautions and I hope you enjoy a safe and crime free Christmas.
