Welcome to the July 2017 issue of The Hatfield Arrow. I do love the Summer months! The weather is great, (mostly), everyone is out and about saying hello and generally people are happier. Boston park Farm is open all year round! And the Maize Maze opens on 16th July, 10am - 5pm. See page 25 for full details. Or you could visit the Yorkshire Wildlife Park during the holidays, there are some amazing animals to see and lots of other activities. Full details can be found on page 16. I’ve received a huge amount of information to be included in this months magazine which is fantastic. Its great to know that so many people read the magazine and like to share their news and event details. The Hatfield Arrow relies solely on local businesses advertising their products or services, if you know of anyone that would benefit from having an advert in the Arrow please pass on my contact details which are printed below.
The deadline for the August issue is Friday 14th July 2017.
Best Wishes Julie Morrell

Hatfield Community Library The library held two half term activities, Lego Robotics and Sandart. These were free for children to attend. Nick brought new equipment for the Lego including tablets for the children to use instead of laptops. Even the youngest children were able to use the tablets to programme their models. The accompanying adults were very impressed. In the last edition, I mentioned some of our volunteers who work in the library. We do have a group of volunteers who do not work on the desk but contribute in other ways to make the library a place where people can come to spend some leisure time. Rhyme Time, Emma, Carol, Gill and Steph with help from Vera who also helps out at other times Needles and Pins, Jan Tovey Art Class, Graham Hanks Sewing/Quilting, Carol Family History, Sherelle Hawes Yoga, Judy Some new volunteers have started recently and are training to work with borrowers. Summer Art Exhibition with a coffee morning will be held at the library on Sat. July 22nd. We hope you will support us. There will be a variety of stalls (including a cake stall!) and raffle. We also hope to have some games to entertain children (and adults). We are still accepting books, both paper back and hardback which we can sell or send off to get money if they are in poor condition. So if you have some please drop them off at the library. Classes Monday, Rhyme Time, 10:30-11:15 (or as long as you want to stay in the library). The ladies who run this group work hard to find interesting songs, stories and activities for pre-school children. Yoga 6:30-8:00 Tuesday, Art Class, 10:00-12:30. At the moment we are using water based oils which happily do not smell and are easier to use than watercolours. Some people just like to do their own thing using media of their choice. Come along to see examples of the art work at the art exhibition and coffee morning on July 22nd. Reading Group 3:00-4:00pm. This is a small, friendly group which meets on the last Tuesday of each Month. We have an informal discussion about the books we read. This Month we are reading ‘The Messenger of Athens’ a Greek who dunnit by Anne Zouroudi. Yoga 3:00-4:00pm Gentle Yoga 4:30-6:00pm Stronger Yoga 6:30-8:00pm Friday, Readers’ Group on the last Friday of the month 10:30-12:30. This is a group which enjoys lively discussions. Next month’s book ‘The Visitors’ by Sally Beauman. NEW, Quilting/ Sewing Group. 2:45-5pm Needles and Pins twice a month. 10:30-12:30. This is a friendly craft group which would welcome new members. NEW OPENING TIMES. Tuesday and Friday 10-5pm. Hopefully this will give children time to come to the library after school. (In September we will also be open on Thursday from 10-5pm). Contact. HATFIELD WOODHOUSE AMATEUR GARDENING SOCIETY At the most recent meeting of the Society on Tuesday 6 June our guest speaker was Steve Lovell from Lincoln. Steve is a garden designer and also does garden make-overs, concentrating on the planting aspect of the job. He is a self confessed plantoholic and lover of wildlife. The subject of Steve’s presentation was “The Four Seasons”, which was well illustrated with a variety of photographs. We started with the hot frosts of winter, through the many colours of spring and summer, finally coming to the vibrants yellows, oranges and browns of Autumn. Interspersed between the pictures of pants, shrubs and trees we were treated to birds, amphibians, animals and insects. Throughout the “show”, Steve gave us a commentary explaining the changes throughout the year. The audience thoroughly enjoyed the presentation. The Society’s annual trip this year, on Tuesday 1 August, will be to the Wold’s Way Lavender Garden at Wintringham near Malton. We will be combining this with a visit to Stella Exley’s new nursery at Alne. The next regular meeting of the Society will be on Tuesday 4 July at Hatfield Woodhouse Club. The speaker will be Jeanette Merillan. As usual, everybody is invited, members and non-members.

Community News A Special Day Out On 19th May Roger Tuby and his family provided the most amazing experience for all the children who attend Coppice School in Hatfield. Fourteen Coppice School mini buses set off in convoy to visit Tuby’s Funfair in Balby which had been open solely for the use of the school. Roger and his family opened some fantastic rides for the whole school to enjoy, completely free of charge, turning down music and dimming lights where needed to ensure the children with sensory processing needs could still access this experience. The staff at Coppice School were both delighted and touched by the children’s reaction to this experience, witnessing a sea of excited, happy faces. The afternoon then ended with Roger giving each child a bag of candyfloss. Head Teacher Karl O’Reilly commented: “We are very thankful for Roger Tuby and Son’s generosity. The children had an amazing time and were given the opportunity to share a great day out with their friends.” Gordon Harper, who helped organise the event commented:’ MR TUBY’S GENEROSITY SEEMS TO KNOW NO BOUNDS AND I AM AWARE HE WILL BE ANNOYED AT ME FOR RECOGNISING HIS KINDNESS. BUT PEOPLE LIKE HIM AND HIS SON, (also called Roger) MAKE OUR COMMUNITY MUCH STRONGER, BY THEIR ACTIONS, NOT JUST WORDS.’

Hatfield Woodhouse Primary School By Lily, Lois, Emily, Madison and Evie. Welcome back to Hatfield Woodhouse Primary. We have been very busy lately as the year 6 sats have been on. Also, our school has competed in the Hill House Cross Country competition .To find out more read on. New Teacher Unfortunately, Miss Bridge -Yr5 teacher- has left. Miss Winks is her replacement and is doing a great job so far. Miss Winks Chicks Our fs1’s have been keeping chickens that are adorable. They have been there for 9 weeks and they have their little coop outside at the back of the shed. The black and brown chick is called Rupert, the white chick is called Daisy and the black chick is called blaze. Fs1 were super-excited when they got them and enjoyed watching them grow. They want to keep them forever. Yr6 SATS Last week, the YR6 class were put to the test as they completed their SATS. Shyanna -I felt excited when I finished my SATS. On the last test , I felt nervous because I wanted it to go well. Daniel- I felt nervous and happy when it finished. It was a big relief. Gardening In the Ks2 garden, we have been kindly donated £250 from the Travis Trust. Mr Needham and some Ks2 girls have worked on the garden for over a year, at lunchtimes. We now have a pond, which has tadpoles in and some plants. There are some smooth slabs, stones and a wooden deck chair. We have steps and plenty of little plants. We are currently making a herb garden and trees have been planted on a hill. Cross Country Last Saturday, our school took part in the cross country competition. Our ks2’s did very well and we have interviewed one of them. Fran-I had a really fun time, but I felt very nervous when we were about to set off. Surprisingly, I had butterflies in my tummy. Bunnies Recently, Kiera Fowler’s bunny rabbit has had two baby bunnies. She has kindly given the school the baby bunnies for school pets. They are sooooooooooo cute! We adore them!!! Now we’re having a naming competition for them. Artwork Lately, yr5 have been working on their artwork. They have been doing self-portraits and soon they will be displayed in the corridor. First, they looked on how to do the portraits and then they carefully drew them.

Success at Thorne Camera Club The new Photography Course for Beginners and Improvers, which began in May, is such a great success that a second course has been suggested. The course concentrates on the basics of photography and camera function, which relates mostly to digital cameras as most people use these now but don’t always understand the use of all the buttons, dials and settings. Ron emailed; Glynn did an absolutely great job. Started with the basics and put it over perfectly with great analogies. Wished it went on longer. Looking forward to the next session. Di said, ‘He explained everything so clearly it was easy to understand’ Cath added, ‘It’s a really good course, I’m glad I signed up for it.’ If you think this course would help you with your camera, you have a second chance to attend. Just contact the Club on 07463821182 or email thornecameraclub@yahoo.co.uk and put your name on the list. This is important as places are limited. The cost is just £25 for 5 lessons 10am the 12 on Saturday mornings at the Methodist Church Hall, starting soon. Summer is now almost upon us, however, looking back over the last few months of activity at Thorne Camera Club, there is much to report. Another success at Thorne Camera Club was Sheffield Photographic Society Annual Knockout Challenge earlier this year, where the Club achieved 14 th place of 29. Considering that the club has run for only 4 years, TCC beat some well established clubs, some which have been in existence for over 100 years. The Competition Secretary was incredibly proud of the result which was a distinct improvement over last year’s placing. One of the other main events was a competition the theme of which was animal portraits plus an open section. The competition resulted in a large number of entrants, the winners of which included: firstly, in the Animal Portrait Section: “Bad Hair Day” – by Jean Goodburne “My Teddy Bear” – by Mel Brown “You Looking at Me” – by Mel brown secondly, in the Open Section: “Street Scene” – by David Ulyett “Stormy Seaside” – anonymous “ The Bus Queue” – by Lynda Ulyett Thorne Camera Club has embarked on its summer outing season now, which will take it through until mid September when the Autumn programme commences. Outings so far have been to Selby for the Civic Society photo quiz and to Wollaton Hall and Deer Park. The latter also staged a Classic Car Show on the same day, so what with the deer themselves, the classic cars on show, the park and the hall, there was an abundance of photo opportunities for all. Other events planned for the summer include: Tropical Butterfly World at Leeds, a Canal Trip to Doncaster and a visit to Walker’s Nurseries Ornamental Garden at Blaxton. More outings will follow in August and September. If you are interested in joining the Club, please contact the Chairman, David, details above.
