Welcome to the July 2018 issue of The Hatfield Arrow. I do love the Summer months! The weather is great, (mostly), everyone is out and about saying hello and generally people are happier. Boston park Farm is open all year round! And the Maize Maze opens in July. They also have a Summer Carnival on June 30th. See page 9 for full details. I’ve received a huge amount of information to be included in this months magazine which is fantastic. Its great to know that so many people read the magazine and like to share their news and event details. The Hatfield Arrow relies solely on local businesses advertising their products or services, if you know of anyone that would benefit from having an advert in the Arrow please pass on my contact details which are printed below.

The deadline for the August issue is Thursday 12th July 2018.

Best Wishes Julie Morrell

Community News HATFIELD WOODHOUSE AMATEUR GARDENING SOCIETY Our latest meeting was held on Tuesday 5 June when we had a larger number of members and guests than usual to listen to our speaker, Don Whitton. Don’s presentation was entitled Plants, People, Passions and Places. Like most of us Don is an amateur gardener, but unlike nearly all of us he holds one of the National Collections of Euphorbias as well as growing a multitude of other plants And all this is done on his allotment garden near Sheffield. Using some very good photographs as his visual aids, Don talked about many of the plants he grows and included stories about the people he has met on his travels when showing and lecturing, and visitors to his garden. Among the people shown on his photos was at least one who has also spoken to the Society. Don was really passionate about his plants and garden and this really came through to us on the night. He also brought a lovely selection of plants for us to look at, and these were also for sale at the end of the presentation. Many of them were snapped up! Our Chairman, John Brown confirmed arrangements for the Annual Outing. This year it is to Renishaw Hall and Gardens on Sunday 5 August. We are going on the Sunday because there is a Special Plants Sale in the Garden on that day. The cost of the outing is £17 which includes a guided tour of the Hall, access to the Gardens and entry into the Plant Sale. Our next meeting is on Tuesday 3 July at Hatfield Woodhouse Club commencing at 7-30. At the time of writing the speaker has not been confirmed, but we are expecting that it will be a “name”. Everybody is welcome to our meetings, both members and non members alike.

Hatfield Community Library We are now on the run up to the summer holidays and the start of the Summer Reading Challenge. Although we do have quite a few children who do the challenge, I hope that the subject will appeal to even more children this year. We really want to encourage children to use the library, at least a few times during the year, to borrow fiction, non-fiction and audio books. We have books which are useful for school topics with age related information. Children are allowed to use the computers with parental/guardian consent. They can be used for research or games. “Friv games for schools” are popular. However, you do headphones to hear the sound effects. (We do have a few at the library) SUMMER READING CHALLENGE. This year it is Mischief Makers. (Gosh! Dennis the Menace was around when I was a child but don’t let that put you off!) The challenge takes place in Beanotown where Dennis, Gnasher and their friends are on the trail of buried treasure. Children have to help them by reading any six books and collecting stickers. Each sticker has a clue to help to find its place on the map. The final clue leads to the treasure. AUTHOR EVENTS, Tuesday July 24th at 2pm. Community News CRIME PREVENTION NEWS: Driver Advice to Combat Car 'Key' Jammers Please check your doors are locked before leaving your vehicle as there has been a recent spate of thefts from cars with the use of electronic car key jammers. Thieves have been using hand-held devices that block signals sent by drivers to lock their vehicles, before entering their unattended, unlocked car and stealing valuables. There has been a recent spike in thefts from vehicles which show no signs of entry, where the driver clearly recalls locking their doors and are confident they can be attributed to thieves blocking their signals remotely. Drivers are pressing their key fob and walking away from their vehicle thinking they’ve locked it, but they are having their frequency blocked by thieves. The only sure way to know your car is locked is to check it manually. If your indicator lights flash, wing mirrors fold in, or the horn beeps when you lock it, this is a sure sign your vehicle has locked, but the failsafe method is to check your door handle manually before you walk away. Basic jamming devices can have a range of 75 metres and affect a whole car park at the time of activation. We are eager to bring this issue and the associated crime prevention advice to the attention of motorists, to enable you to protect your property. The issue of key jamming affects forces nationally and has previously been highlighted by the National Police Chiefs’ Council.

Summer at Thorne Camera Club Just because it’s summer doesn’t mean the Camera Club stops. Members are enjoying the summer weather getting out and about with their cameras capturing eye-catching shots, interesting events, and super scenery. Finishing the Spring Programme with a Fish and Chip Supper, accompanied by a selection of members’ images from previous few months, members then planned what to do and where to go during the summer . Some strange characters were encountered in Wetwang, in the East Riding of Yorkshire, recently, and only some were members of the Camera Club! The village was holding its annual Scarecrow Festival, and residents had come up with some strange, but some vaguely familiar personages. Camera Club members made their way up there for interesting and humorous shots around displays in streets and gardens, and enjoyed a cuppa and chat in the village hall. The weather was fantastic, and members learnt a lot as well as having a good time. There’s also the informative short course running currently on Saturday mornings helping people improve their photography. What they learn they put into practise on days out to interesting places. Very successful last year, it has just 2 more weeks to run this time, and participating photographers report they are learning a lot in a small, friendly group with an excellent tutor. Not everyone has a garden like Geoff’s, but then, not everyone is an ex-president of the Lincolnshire Wildlife Trust and dedicated to wildlife like Geoff and his wife, Chris. With the aid of a moth trap, Camera Club members were able to get some amazing close-ups of these nocturnal insects, as well as other inhabitants such as frogs, bees, caterpillars, beetles and Praying Mantis. A big hit was an ‘infinity pool’ to photograph frog and reflection, the Peppered Moth, so well camouflaged it was almost impossible to spot, and the daredevil Tiger Legged Monkey Frog, determined to make its escape by jumping the equivalent of a high rise block. Another garden and another photo opportunity was provided by new member Mark, who volunteered to open his garden for other members. A Tardis like garden with a multitude of flowers in bloom, and for sale, behind the Post Office in Moorends, there was plenty to keep the shutters clicking all evening. Thankfully the rain held off, although the light could have been better, and everyone had the opportunity to get some great pictures for future competitions. Most outings are fully booked, but for anyone interested in joining the Camera Club, there are a few outings you could come on and see how much you can learn. Hatfield Town Cricket Club 'Hatfield Town CC are continuing to buck the trend and our junior training nights are proving even more popular this year with the number of children attending increasing week on week. The teams are doing us all proud on the field with both Under 9's teams showing that practice and hard work is paying off by winning the majority of their games. The Under 13's have won two, lost two with both defeats being close contests against strong sides. Four of the Under 13's have already made appearances in the senior 2nd XI and fared well. The Mid-week senior XI are continuing to lead the way in Division 1 of the Snaith League with a perfect 7 from 7 record and also came away from Goole Town with a victory in the cup against a strong Goole side. Skipper Greg Fairhurst will be hoping the success continues and sees them win at least one of the competitions. The 1st XI have found it difficult to find a victory in the Pontefract League Division 1 but moral stays high and they will be looking to fare better in the 2nd half of the season. The 2nd XI showed better form with a resounding 7 wicket victory over Bentley and a narrow defeat against Ferrybridge with several youngsters featuring in the side. The Spring Bank Holiday saw the annual Rounders Day take place and once again it proved to be a resounding success. There were teams taking part from across the local community and the ground was flooded with visitors making the most of the lovely weather, good food and refreshments. It was another great day at HTCC! Thank you to everyone who participated and visited. Upcoming events at HTCC are Doncaster v Leeds Under 11's on the 8th July, Doncaster Junior League Cup finals day for Under 9's 11's and 15's on the 15th July and our annual BBQ evening will this year be a Hog Roast Night on the 4th August.

Hatfield Woodhouse Primary School By: Maisie, Lydia, Byron and Lloyd

At Hatfield Woodhouse Primary School, we took advantage of the good weather to bring a classic book to life outdoors! Engaging the talents of Active8 theatre group, all our Key Stage 2 children shared Lewis Caroll’s ‘Alice in Wonderland’. In discussion with the theatre group beforehand, we explained that we wanted to develop the children’s vocabulary and their understanding of the author’s choice of words and phrases, so at key points in the story, the action stopped and the children were questioned about their understanding. British Values were also strengthened when the children were offered stolen jam tarts at the start of the performance – despite being warned not to take them. They then took place in a courtroom trial at the end of the experience, to vote on whether the knave who stole the tarts was the guilty party, or if they were…especially as they had eaten them on the way round. A very enjoyable and engaging way of bringing literacy to life! In addition to promoting literacy, at Hatfield Woodhouse we have been working hard to raise the profile of sport. We were extremely honoured to welcome the Tour De Yorkshire women’s bike race pass by our school gates, last month. Children spent time before the event researching the event and even designing their own bunting, posters and cycling tops. The sun was shining on the day of the race and the children were lucky enough to see the riders pass by, enjoying cakes that were kindly donated by a local coffee shop. After, parents joined children on the school field for a picnic lunch to celebrate. The children thoroughly enjoyed the morning and were all inspired by the cyclists. Staff are very hopeful that the event will encourage children to enjoy cycling and to cycle more often. KS2 were lucky enough to be given the chance to visit Sunnybank Gardens and play on their brand new play area! Rebecca, the owner, very kindly gave children juice and some homemade ice cream! The children had a great time and said they would definitely like to return.

One Very Long Walk: Fundraising for Cystic Fibrosis Faithful readers of the Hatfield Arrow may recall that two summers ago a group of 14 ladies and 1 gentleman from the Hatfield and Isle of Axholme areas participated in a 40-mile walk in North Yorkshire raising money for the Cystic Fibrosis Trust. We are delighted to announce that after a year off, we’re back at it this summer – and we’d love for you to help sponsor us! On Saturday 7th July, a group of 7 local ladies and lads will once more undertake Great Strides 65, a 65km (40mi) circular walk that must be completed in 18 hours, to raise money for the Cystic Fibrosis Trust. We will set off from Castleton in the Peak District at the crack of dawn, armed with spare socks, bananas, flapjack, and gumption. We will meander down the Limestone Way, cut across east towards the Derwent Valley Heritage Way, pass by Chatsworth House, and hike back up to Castleton. If all goes well, we will cross the finish line by midnight. Along the way our beloved support car drivers will meet us at checkpoints to provide physical and emotional nourishment, but the rest of the time it will just be us, the hills, our flapjack, and our aching feet. (Even our months of practice walks can’t prepare us entirely for 40 solid miles of schlepping along!) The pain will all be worth it though, as the money we raise will go to support the Cystic Fibrosis Trust. Cystic fibrosis (CF) is a life-shortening genetic condition that slowly destroys the lungs and digestive system and affects quality of life. The disease affects more than 10,400 people in the UK. People are born with CF and cannot catch it later in life, but one in 25 of us carries the faulty gene that causes it, usually without knowing. CF Trust is the only UK-wide charity fighting for a life unlimited, when everyone living with CF can look forward to a long, healthy life. This year, we’ve set our group target to raise £3,000 for the Trust. We’re doing the walk and raising the money in honour of family and friends we know who live with CF every day, and in memory of those we knew who lost the battle all too soon. If you’d like to help us on our journey and support research to make CF history, please visit our fundraising page and make a donation at https:// www.justgiving.com/fundraising/helen-young28. Don’t forget to watch this space next month for a recap on our adventure! And thank you from the bottom of our hearts for your support.
