What a month, can You believe half the year is over? I can hear you say thank goodness for that! Normality has not yet returned but I am thankful for the few changes such as meeting up with others, businesses getting back to work and outdoor training sessions for all ages starting up again. We are currently awaiting information on further relaxing of restrictions following the news we have moved from level 4 to 3 so hopefully our cafes, bars and restaurants will receive some welcome news and hair and beauty salons can open again. They have been hit incredibly hard and I wish them all the very best of luck in rebuilding their businesses. I am hopeful usual community events can start up again soon so if you want to share any information in the August issue, please let me know. The deadline for the August issue is Wednesday 15th July Keep safe everyone. Julie Morrell Tel: 07854 880882 Julie@arrowpublications.co.uk www.arrowpublications.co.uk
I would firstly like to apologise for not including the Prison Service when I thanked the different key workers for their work during these difficult times and secondly I would like to say a huge thank you to the Prison Officers and Probation Officers who are putting their lives at risk every day whilst providing an essential service! Community News HATFIELD WOODHOUSE AMATEUR GARDENING SOCIETY We unfortunately have no news to give this month, so the status of events from the beginning of September is still to be decided. We will have some information next time, mainly about whether or not the Autumn Show will take place on 12 September. Watch this space. We have all continued gardening during these past few months, and walking around one can see how nice gardens are looking, obviously they have been getting a lot more attention than usual this year. The up and down weather this year - cold and wet for a long time in late winter/early spring, then heatwave, more rain, another heatwave, and expected thunderstorms (forecast as I write this) - seems to have really been ideal for lots of whitefly and blackfly infestations. Lots of flowering garden plants have been infested with whitefly, which seem to be very persistent and difficult to get rid of. But the worst in our garden has been an invasion of blackfly onto our Spanish Broom tree. The new shoots which bear the blowers have been absolutely covered, all over the tree. They have stopped the flowers coming out, partly because of their physical presence hindering the buds breaking and ruining the flowers, but also from them sucking the tree’s sap, which inhibits flowers’ growth. It was so bad that we have tried to wash the blackly away, first by trying to brush all the branches and shoots with a water containing washing up liquid, and then hosing down with clean water. Most of the blackly came off, but the tree does not have the green healthy shine we are used to, and there are hardly any flowers. It should be covered with yellow bloom at the time of year. We shall see in the coming two or three months if the tree has survived.

Community News St Lawrence Church Children’s Work Update This 6 week summer break is certainly going to be one of the strangest that families have ever encountered – holidays away possibly cancelled, most attractions and restaurants still closed, and already having spent over 4 months at home together. We are sure that the stress and isolation for families will be hitting peak levels by the summer. So this year, Rachel, our new Youth, Children’s and Families Worker, has launched the “Socially Distant Staycation Summer Club” to provide fun activities and ideas throughout the six week break. The theme will be “Around the World”, and will follow Saint Paul and some of his journeys. The club will cost £10 per child, and they will receive a welcome pack of goodies, activities and craft materials. To find out more or to register you children or grandchildren, visit www.stlawrencesummerclub.wordpress.com Free places are also available for those who are struggling financially, just contact Rachel on rachel.ridler@centenaryproject.org.uk
SSAFA and Age UK Doncaster are working together to ensure that during and post COVID-19 Doncaster’s veterans are not forgotten. Doncaster Stands by our Veterans SSAFA Doncaster & Thorne Division working with Age UK Doncaster has secured funding from The Armed Forces Covenant Trust to support forces veterans over the next six months. This project is free to former members of the Armed Forces or their spouse. The main aim is to ensure that veterans and their family: are kept safe, have appropriate support, for example, collecting medication, undertaking shopping, are not feeling as if you have no one to talk to, and providing one off assistance Many individuals over the past few weeks have been shielding or self-isolating to stay safe and this has often led to a feeling of being disconnected with what is happening locally. It may also be the case that you are encountering financial hardship and between SSAFA and Age UK Doncaster we may be able to help. This project is here to alleviate some of the difficulties we are all enduring and to ensure that you are keeping as well as possible. It maybe you would just appreciate a chat every other week or it may be some practical assistance is required. Whatever the issue we encourage you to get in touch with either of the two contacts below who will then be able to discuss any of your needs further and agree a way forward. Hatfield Community Library News I hope you are all coping with the current situation of coming out of lockdown. I am actually finding it slightly more scary than total lockdown. Although it is nice to be able to drive further, I have seen so many situations where people are obviously not following the rules so I am very wary of going out and about. I might just stay at home a bit longer and keep practising my baking. I really feel obliged to do this as several kind people have taken the trouble to bring me bags of flour. I will, however, still have my early morning walk even though my toes are starting to protest at the unaccustomed exercise. (Going to the gym was much easier.) At the moment the news coming from DMBC is that libraries are not opening in the immediate future as there are lots of factors to consider before this can happen. As you know our library, and probably nearly all other libraries are not easy to make safe as there is no simple way to protect borrowers and staff. However, the library service has been working on ways in which to recover library services with the guidance from official sources. The main concern is of course the safety of all staff, volunteers and borrowers. I am sure there will be a way in which libraries will be able to provide books. There will also be health and safety checks to do on the buildings. Some of the library staff have been going round the libraries to do these checks every week. Other members of the library service have been keeping in contact with those unable to leave their homes and were using the Home library service. An older friend of mine has appreciated the chats. I will repeat the information which I put in the last article about on-line resources in case you missed it. You will have noticed that our online resources have increased and in some cases been extended temporarily for use from home. See our web page at: https://library.doncaster.gov.uk/web/arena/a-zeresources . Our latest addition RBDigital which launched 29th April for eMagazines, eComics and eNewspapers has been greatly received by our library members with 626 magazines, 81 comics and being downloaded so far. By the end of this week OverDrive eBooks and eAudio books will launch giving additional choice of titles to Borrowbox for our readers. These online services will play a major part of our recovery whilst we adjust to a ‘new normal’ way of providing a library service in Doncaster. These services also include the use of ‘Find My Past’ and Ancestry,’ if you want to trace your ancestors. Also a reminder that no fines will imposed for overdue books. I have three which should have been returned weeks ago. I believe that books are being updated by library staff so no need to worry about that. Well that is all for now. Keep reading, Keep well and stay safe.

Hatfield Woodhouse Primary School By: Lola, Bertie and Mylie Hello, welcome to Hatfield Woodhouse Primary. We are all working hard, most of us in our own homes as we are not all at school at the minute because of Lockdown. Seesaw/Dojo For those of us who are not back to school yet, we are completing weekly work in all subjects and uploading online so that our teachers can read it and mark it. They then respond to us. We are all really enjoying hearing from our teachers and teaching assistants and they are really helping us to keep going with school work and keep motivated. Some of us have received post cards and messages for our hard work. We intend on keeping up the great work right until the summer! Zoom lessons Most days of the week, if we are not one of the year groups back to school, we have been having a daily lesson taught by our class teachers on Zoom. We do reading, maths and writing in these sessions. Our teachers then upload us an activity to complete after the session. Miss Winks, Y5 teacher told us, “Teaching on Zoom has been really tricky as we are not face-to-face with the children in person like we usually are. However, it is working really well and teachers are learning a whole new way of teaching! It is giving children the structure and purpose to learning that they need.” Childcare School have been running childcare at Ash Hill Academy and then at Hatfield Woodhouse for the children of key workers since the beginning of lockdown. The children in childcare have been working really hard on their work that their teachers have set. Also, they have completed lots of creative work whilst in childcare. Please see the pictures below. Here’s what the children have to say, “I’ve really enjoyed seeing the teachers again,” Kade told us. William said, “Coming in and having social time with friends has been the best thing about being in school for me.” Lilly Mae told us, “I loved doing Joe Wicks’ workouts every day! Staff have been working on a rota to cover the childcare. Mrs Nixon our Year 5 teaching assistant said, “I feel very safe in school and it has been lovely to be able to teach children again. I’ve loved being outside with the children.” FS1,2, Y1 and Y6 All of these groups of children are now back in school with their teachers. We welcome Y5 back next week. Helena in Year 6 told us, “I love being back and seeing all the friendly faces of my friends and teachers again.” The classrooms in school are all set out to provide 2m social distancing and all the children are feeling happy and safe in school! All of the children in school and staff have to have their temperature taken every morning as they enter on site. See our picture of this- our office manager Mrs Orridge in charge of this at Hatfield Woodhouse! Staff at Hatfield Woodhouse Mrs Acton, our head has been very proud of her staff and pupils for all of their hard work over this time. She has worked incredibly hard, even through the school holidays to ensure that school was ready for children coming back. This is what she had to say when we spoke to her: ‘Talking to colleagues from other schools, I am aware that schools have each found their own way of coping during the crisis and that they are all very different. I am incredibly proud of my staff and our children and the way they have adapted their way of teaching and learning to the current situation we find ourselves in. We have all been learners together and the commitment of our children to engage in these new ways in great numbers makes us the fantastic school we are!’ We will bring you more news next month and keep you all posted on what we have been doing. Take care and keep safe.

darts Artists Inspired by Nature for Children’s Art Week - Children’s Art Week Monday 29 – Sunday 19 July 2020 Children’s Art Week will see thousands of children, their teachers and their families taking part in fun, creative activities at home and in schools across three weeks in June and July. Venues of all types and sizes—from libraries to community halls, heritage venues and country parks, schools, museums and galleries across the UK—are hosting online and remote activities that will help children and young people to be inspired, engaged and entertained by art. In Doncaster, darts visual artist, Karen Hall, has created a special activity pack that takes inspiration from the natural world and will encourage children to explore their environment. The arts activities encourage looking, experimentation and play. The activity pack includes Makaton signs and symbols to increase access and ensure that as many young people get involved as possible. Families will be able to access the ‘Natural World Viewfinder’, ‘Making Marks’ and ‘Shadow Drawing’ activities on the darts website www.wearedarts.org.uk on the Arts at Home section. There are also many other creative activities to have a go at here including virtual tours of the Mythomania exhibition, Drawing Like a Sculptor activities, Animal Magic making resources and an Introduction to Collage. Over the past months, the COVID-19 pandemic has highlighted how essential creativity and the visual arts are for learning, connecting and wellbeing. While our venues, cultural organisations and some school buildings may be closed, engaging in the visual arts is more important than ever! darts Artist, Karen Hall, says: “I have really enjoyed creating these inclusive activities and hope that lots of children get involved. I have children of my own and understand how frustrating lockdown can be. Creativity is a brilliant way of engaging children and can really improve their health, wellbeing and happiness.” darts is encouraging those who get involved in the activities to share what they have created. Tag them on social media @wearedarts or email hello@wearedarts.org.uk
