Travis St Lawrence Football Fun
On 6th June 2024, some of our year 4 and 5 children represented our school at the Stoneacre Football Tournament. This was held at the EcoPower Stadium, Doncaster and was attended by 8 schools. We prioritised this event in our school calendar as it is such a wellorganised and supportive event for all involved. As one of the teams, we were presented with a free football kit with our school logo on which will be used for all other competitive events.
Our team comprised of 10 children from across year 4 and 5 who participated in football tournaments throughout the day. Each team had the opportunity to play one another until the final for two teams at the end of the day.
We were so proud of all of the children who attended. They conducted themselves with maturity, determination and care. We were also so proud of one of our team who was awarded the Player of the day ball. Dylan J gained this award for being an incredible sportsperson and demonstrating exceptional leadership skills. He was seen many times supporting, not only his own team but also, the other teams. When someone would be injured he would go and check that they were ok. What a fantastic ambassador for our school!
At the end of the day, the children were awarded with a medal to celebrate their achievement. Our children wanted to give their views of the day:
Imogen- “It was fun, I was happy that I got the opportunity to do it”.
Oliver- “It was a lifetime experience to get to do it and play on the Keepmoat ground”.
Isaac- “It was a very good experience and an honour to play in the Doncaster Stadium”.
Eliah- “It wasn’t the best because we didn’t win but we did get 2 goals”.
Sophia- “I loved it because we all tried our hardest. We tried and that’s what important”.
Theo- “I loved it because every I had fun and that’s what mattered”.
Presley- “I enjoyed it because we got to play in Doncaster Stadium”.
We would like to thank all of the parents/carers who attended and supported the event. I would also like to thank Mrs Oxby for her hard work and dedication giving the children the opportunity of this event. We look forward to more competitions.
Thank you for reading our report.

Hello and welcome to what is supposedly called Summer. Hopefully the weather will sort itself out and it can decide whether it will be sunny or continue to rain.
It is unfortunate but when the weather turns nice, we often need extra ventilation in our homes to help cool down. This usually involves leaving windows and sometimes doors open to take advantage of a draught. Sadly, thieves will take advantage of this and either reaching through or windows or enter houses by open doors to steal your property. The old saying ‘An open window or door is an invitation to a thief’ is still relevant .
While you are outside in your garden, you want to make sure that unwanted visitors do not get into your house. Never sit in the back garden with your front door unlocked. In fact, always keep your front door locked even when you are in the house. Do not leave ground floor windows or other easily accessible windows open in a room if you or someone else in your family is not in that room. Always shut and lock windows if you leave a room. Do not leave any articles on a windowsill in a room especially car or house keys even if you or someone else is in that room.
If you are enjoying the rear garden and everyone is sat outside, always make sure you can see if anyone enters your house by the back door. We have had thieves sneak into houses via the back door even when families are enjoying a barbecue out in the rear garden.
When some people go on holiday, they post pictures on social media of them enjoying themselves socialising or admiring the scenery. Be careful about broadcasting that your house is empty. Personally, I would rather share pictures of my holiday when I have returned home. It may lose the impact, but it does not advertise the fact that I am away from home.
Always ask a member of your family or a trusted neighbour to keep an eye on your house if you go away. They can put out and return your bin if necessary and very importantly move any parcel that may have arrived by Courier delivery and been left by your front door. If you are expecting a parcel delivery, consider redirecting it to a local collection hub or to your trusted neighbour. That reduces the danger of leaving a parcel on open display to any passing thief.
If you are tidying up your garden and using power or hand tools, do not leave them unattended in your front garden. If you take a break and go into the house or rear garden, do not leave the tools in the front garden. Thieves can and have simply walked off with lawnmowers and expensive hedge trimmers. Thieves can also use hand tools to gain entry to your property. A garden spade makes an ideal crowbar and they have been used in the past to smash glass and force open doors and windows.
I have to mention the number of houses that are being entered by the offender snapping the euro profile cylinder in the doors. Properties are still being burgled and car keys stolen resulting in the car being taken as well much. Reduce the risk of this type of burglary happening to you by replacing e Euro profile cylinder locks with one that matches security standard TS 007 3 star or SS312 Diamond standard. Please make sure the lock is correctly measured and installed so that it does not protrude beyond the door furniture.
I know of a recent repeat burglary where offenders returned to a property that was burgled two years ago again to steal the very expensive motor car on the front drive. The victim had installed a bollard on his front drive to stop the offenders driving his vehicle away, but they obviously assumed that the keys to secure the bollard will probably on the car key ring. They broke into the house snapping the lock on the rear patio doors but luckily, they didn't find the key the car keys so this time although damage was caused to get into the house nothing was stolen
You can enjoy the summer and relax without the worry of crime by taking a few simple precautions. For further crime prevention advice, visit the South Yorkshire Police website at https://www.southyorks.police.uk/find-out/crime-prevention-advice/ Stay safe and secure.

Friends of Quarry Park
We had a brilliant session on Friday 7th June with our amazing volunteers and Rangers Sam and Leon. There was plenty of jobs to do so we split into groups and got started. The Council were there too cutting the grass, so the park was a hive of activity.
The litter picking team set off to do their stuff and collected a large bag of rubbish, parts from a burnt-out motorbike and a bicycle! The team reported that the amount of litter was much less than usual which is a positive sign. Let’s hope it continues. The council have provided dog poo bags for the two stations located near the woods and the post office path entrance, which the Friends are keeping replenished. Hopefully this will encourage more owners to clean up after their dogs.
A new bench was installed in a clearing near Warren Wood which was tried out and approved by a lady walking her dog. The weeds and nettles were trimmed back on the Greens Road steps, around way marker posts and in the car park. All the vegetation is overgrown following a very wet Spring, but everything looks healthy.
We installed a new sign to mark our copse of trees that were planted last year. The trees were generously funded by Vulcan Renewables through their Community Fund, and the sign was made by our very talented Ranger Leon. We think it looks amazing!
Another job was making a start laying ground mesh underneath our new picnic table to protect the ground from erosion. Additional mats will be laid creating a link to St Mary’s car park pathway enabling easier access.
After a busy couple of hours, we enjoyed refreshments in the sunshine with delicious strawberry cakes from Julie.
The Friends of Quarry Park were recently nominated for an award in the Environment category of the Hatfield Town Council’s ‘Pride of our Area’ Awards. We are very pleased and proud to have won this award in recognition of the work our volunteers do. Huge thanks go to the committee, volunteers, rangers and everyone who supports us. A reminder that our Annual General Meeting will take place on Monday 17th June at 7.30pm at the Flarepath, everyone welcome. We will also be holding a coffee morning in aid of group funds, at Hatfield Library on Saturday 27th July 10am – 12 noon with other community groups taking part. This will be partly funded through a generous grant from The Rotary Club of Doncaster St George’s, for which we are extremely grateful.
Work parties are usually held on the first Friday of each month, weather permitting. There is always plenty of work to be done, including litter picking, clearing paths and cutting back vegetation. Equipment is provided but please ensure you wear suitable clothing and footwear. The next events are scheduled for Friday 5th July and Friday 2nd August 10am – 12 noon, meet at the new picnic table. Full details will be published on our Facebook page ‘Friends of Quarry Park’ or you can email us at thequarrypark@gmail.com or call us on 07546 595144.

Doncaster HF Rambling Club is an independent walking club which strives to provide its members with opportunities for the healthy enjoyment of the countryside in a spirit of friendship and fun. We organise three grades of walks to suit all abilities every four weeks on a Sunday, visiting a wide range of locations, travelling by coach from a number of pick-up points around Doncaster. We are a friendly group and always welcome new members. We offer anyone interested in joining us to come along on two walks as a guest before committing as a member. The cost of the coach fare is £15.
Our latest walk was from Ashford in the Water in the Peak District which, despite the poor weather, was enjoyed by us all. Our trip coincided with this years Well Dressings and the Flower Festival in this lovely village, as well as refreshments in one of the two pubs, café and Community Centre when we met up at the end of the day.
On June 23rd we did our annual Coastal Walk along the North Yorkshire Coast walking South from Scarborough, and taking in Muston Sands further South. It ended with us all meeting up inland at Hunmanby for the journey home.
Full details of our club and what we have to offer can be found on our website: www.doncasterhframblingclub.org.uk
Our next walk is July 21st in Buxton Derbyshire.,

Hatfield Community Library
We are all feeling very proud in the library at the moment as we were nominated for a “Pride of Hatfield Award.” This is a new initiative by the council to thank the many volunteers who serve in the DN7 ward. Our certificate for 'Service to the Community' is on show in the library. Many other worthy groups of all ages were also nominated, some becoming winners of their section. Congratulations to all the other deserving winners.
It is a special year for us as it is our 10 year anniversary. Yes we have been a community run library for 10 years. Where has the time gone? I can clearly remember the very first public meeting to which I came just intending to help out in some way. The few first volunteers were gradually joined by other volunteers who came forward so here we are. We really have to thank Jenny Haughan for her invaluable help in those early days of setting up and later Mary Camm who was our support when we reopened as a volunteer library. Others from the then DMBC also played a part and the City of Doncaster Council continues to support us. Most of our volunteers have been with us for a long time but some newer faces have filled in the gaps over the years. Thanks to their commitment, I hope we have been successful in our aim to serve the community and introduce new activities whilst keeping the library running in the way the public wanted.
Last month I mentioned Doncaster's great railway history and was quite proud of myself, (as a not born in Yorkshire never mind Doncaster person), for knowing so much about Doncaster's history. However, as the saying goes, pride comes before a fall. In a chance conversation with a local personality in the library, I found out an historical fact about Doncaster's history which I had never heard of but quite a few other people had. Including my 12 year old grandson who is mainly interested in football and his phone!! No doubt a lot of other people may have heard a story that once Doncaster belonged to Scotland. Doncaster, of course, was nothing like it is today. The “Manor of Doncaster” came to the English Crown when the family who owned it died out.
According to the Treaty of Durham, King Stephen ceded the Manor of Doncaster and some other parts of the North to King David 1st of Scotland as part of treaty to appease him when he invaded in 1136 reaching as far Durham. David had already taken Carlisle, Alnwick, Norham and Newcastle. Stephen let David retain Carlisle and a large part of Cumberland, Lancashire and strangely the Manor of Doncaster which remained a fief of the English crown rather than territory annexed by Scotland. King David broke the treaty when he invaded again in 1138. Some years later in 1157 , Henry 11 regained control of all land given to the Scots by Stephen. There is no surviving record in Doncaster of the Scottish Charter as the borough records only go back to the 12th century. However, there are King David coins, which were found in Doncaster, in the museum. I have not yet found any information about this story in the local history section of our library. We do have quite a few books about the history of Doncaster and the surrounding areas in the library.
If you like historical mystery novels, the Cadfael books by Ellis Peters are set in the time of civil war when the aforementioned Stephen was fighting his cousin, the Empress Maud, for the English crown.
COFFEE MORNING MENCAP
Thank you to those people who came to support the Doncaster Mencap coffee morning. I thought for a moment that I had made a mistake with the dates when our friends from Thorne Lions walked in. However all was fine as they also support the Doncaster Mencap group as one of the many good deeds they do. They made over £200 and kindly made a donation to the library.n
TUESDAY June 18th CSPO drop-in from 10am

Please come along to support their efforts, have a coffee wth friends and eat some delicious cake. The Lions are holding a Fun and Sports day on Saturday August 10th at the Parklands Social Club on Wheatly Hall Road. (See poster photo.)
