Exciting New Project at Thorne Camera Club Have you ever wished you knew a bit more about your camera and how to use it? A new course to be run by Thorne Camera Club could be the answer. For beginners or those with a little knowledge, the Photography Course for Beginners and Improvers will run on Saturday mornings at the Methodist Church 10am to 12 noon. You don’t need to be a member to join this course. No matter what camera you use a compact, bridge camera or a dSLR, even a camera phone, everyone needing help with all the knobs and dials, all the different settings and modes, will find some help and advice. What’s an ISO? How to set a shutter speed? Why do I need an aperture setting? What’s this little graph on my camera for? Questions such as these and many others will be answered on the Course. A similar Photography Course by Jessops wil1 cost around £140.00. At Thorne CC a 5 week course is just £25.00. Now that is a bargain! No need to keep struggling to understand your camera now. Go along on Saturday May 27th, at 9.45am sign up and pay the fee. Numbers will be kept low for individual attention. An exciting and informative programme has been devised by an experienced photographer, who will be on hand to help you. So don’t miss out. Go along and learn how to use your camera and take better photographs. You can reserve a place by emailing thornecameraclub@yahoo.co.uk, and a reserve list will be opened for a second course. At the Club, a great evening was enjoyed by members and the Angela Gravil Stage School of Thorne, when the two got together for a portrait session. In a variety of costumes, demonstrating a various styles, the girls from the Dance School were under the spotlights in a different way. Angela, with six pupils, arrived at the club to be greeted by excited members with their cameras at the ready, to take some studio portraits and lively action shots. Posing alone, in pairs, or groups of four or six, the girls smiled for the cameras all evening. Through several costume changes, they posed, danced, leapt and curled, to be rewarded with some lovely photographs to hang on their wall. The Club is grateful to Angela and her pupils for coming along and making the evening such a success. From the end of May to early September club members go on photographic outings, getting lots of good photographs. Indoor meetings start again on Sept 18th at the Methodist Church Hall 7.15pm. If you would like to join them, either on an outing or at a meeting, contact David on 07463821182 or the email address above.

Community News Hockey Tournament – Doncaster games

Last week on Thursday 4th May, an excited group a Year 3 and 4 children from Travis St Lawrence, took part in a fun-filled, Quicksticks hockey tournament with several other teams from the Doncaster area. After arrived through a really tight, we were informed about how the day would run. We were split up into two groups so 2 games could be played at once. There were 6 in each group and twelve teams altogether. We played several different matches, the start of each one filled with anticipation as we waited for the whistle to blow. One enthusiastic player reported, “The games were quite challenging as everyone played well. However, there was something special about each one of us on our team, which made us play effectively. For example, Faith made a good defender, Owen was a quick striker and I worked hard to defend.” The Travis team won 2 of their matches, and proudly returned to school to share their good news. “It was very successful,” said Faith. “We definitely recommend it to others and would most certainly do it again!” “We had such good fun,” exclaimed Owen. “I loved every part of it, although lunch was best because after playing hard we were hungry!” Overall, another successful sporting event for Travis. We returned happy and very knowledgeable about tactics and rules. A huge thank you to all those involved in giving us a great opportunity.

HATFIELD WOODHOUSE AMATEUR GARDENING SOCIETY On Tuesday 2 May we were very pleased to welcome once again Stella Exley who gave a wide ranging talk called “The Ups and Downs of Exhibiting”. We were lucky to welcome her because as the victim of a recent car break in Stella was without her computer, projector and software sticks. But she came to us as promised and spoke off the cuff for well over an hour without notes or visual aids and was thoroughly entertaining in the process. She did indeed talk about exhibiting, but set this within a story of her new nursery near York, and the problems of growing nearly everything outdoors.. Stella is a Camassia specialist who runs Hare spring Plants Nursery (harespringcottageplant.com) which until recently was near Barnsley, and has now moved to Church Orchard, Alne, York. Stella continues to house the National Collection of Camassias at her new nursery, and is now working towards a National Collection of Sidalcea (related to Mallow) as well. One can buy her plants on-line and at the numerous shows which she attends throughout the year (see her web site for details). At the next meeting on Tuesday 6 June the speaker will be Steve Lovell whose subject will be “The Four Seasons”. As usual we will be starting at 7-30pm at Hatfield Woodhouse Club. Everybody, members and non members are welcome. There will be a small charge of £2 for non members.

Community News Officers from The South Yorkshire Fire & Rescue Service, Thorne visited my home in Hatfield Woodhouse last month to carry out a Fire Safety Check. They were very courteous and helpful and gave me advice regarding different actions that could be taken around the house to make it less likely for a fires to start. They also gave me advice on what to do in the event of a fire in the home. Home Safety Checks, including free smoke alarms if needed, are offered to people throughout South Yorkshire. During a visit, firefighters or community safety staff will give you advice on how to make your home safer, what to do in the event of a fire and what to do if you are trapped by a fire. They will also fit free smoke alarms if a home is without one and explain how to keep them working. For more information or to book a safety check please visit syfire.gov.uk Or telephone 0114 253 2314.

Thank you Harry Middleton! Thorne Colliery Under 12’s Junior Football Team would like to say a massive thank you to Doncaster Rovers player, Harry Middleton, for attending their Presentation Evening, held at Hatfield Woodhouse, in May 2017. Harry, who lives locally, presented each team member with their individual trophies as well as the trophies to players who received recognition for special achievements. Tom Harrington was presented with the award for Managers Player of the Season and for Players Player. Twins, Zac and Logan Mason were each given the award for Parents Players of the Season. The Manager, Carl Morrell, thanked every te am member for their outstanding effort throughout the season and for their attitude to training and playing matches. They are now looking forward to more success when the next season starts. The boys enjoyed spending time with Harry after the presentation, when he took the time to answer any questions they had about having a career in football. The evening was a great success!

Hatfield Town Cricket Club It’s been a busy start to the season for everyone at Hatfield Town CC with all our sides being in action. In the Junior Section, it’s been a delight to see the first ever Under 9 games played at the ground. The boys and girls have acquitted themselves amazingly well against more experienced opponents, Goole and Fishlake, and played with great enthusiasm that will see them improve as the season progresses. The Under 11’s produced an impressive team performance in their first fixture to beat a strong Goole Town side. They battled really well and secured victory with two boundaries in the last over of the game. After an abandoned first fixture at Tickhill the Under 13’s returned there the following week and achieved a memorable 5 run victory in which every player contributed well to an excellent all round performance. Everyone is looking forward to seeing them continue the great start throughout the season. Training is every Friday night at Carr Side Lane from 6:00pm onwards, any children wanting to join in are welcome to come along, we have sessions for all ages from 5 upwards. The parents ar well catered for with the bar and kitchen open. Please contact Junior Cricket Manager Richard on 07740215350 if you’d like more information. Our Sunday XI, captained by Talib Hussain, were the first of our senior sides in action securing a hat-trick of wins to start the season in great fashion before being pegged back in their last two fixtures. They’ll be looking to get back to winning ways soon and get back to the top of the league. The 1st XI are again competing in Division One of the Pontefract League, with new captain Luke Cockburn now at the helm. They began with two difficult fixtures at home to Askern and away to Ackworth CC. Despite periods of dominance in both fixtures they suffered frustrating defeats in both games before securing victory at home to Frickley when Ellis Pattison returned to the side and scored 57 before taking 5 wickets to see Town home by 15 runs. They will be looking to build on this victory in the coming weeks. The 2nd XI started with a disappointing defeat at Ferrybridge before securing two convincing victories against Frickley and Stainborough, skipper Craig Pattison has lead the way with 63 and 117 not out, with all the bowlers chipping in with valuable wickets. In the Snaith Evening League the weather interrupted a good start at home at home to Outcasts Cc with Town on 56-1 when the heavens opened, they made amends the following week away at Hirst Courtney with a convincing 7 wicket victory, Luke Cockburns 48 not out securing victory. Follow us on Facebook and Twitter or visit the clubs website to keep up to date with fixtures and results.

Well What a Night That Was! Vulcan XH558 has been in storage for the last few months but, with the kind permission of 2Excel - the new leaseholder - was returned to Hangar 3 especially for the Rossington Hall Riding for the Disabled 30th Anniversary Ball. The Vulcan to the Sky Trust and their dedicated team of volunteers pulled out all the stops to ensure our Ball went ahead without any hitches. Ably assisted by the NCM Roadshow Team who worked really hard in the days prior, the Hangar was transformed into a venue befitting the incredible Vulcan and the gaiety of an Anniversary Ball. Escorted into the Ball by Bawtry Air Cadets, the guests were entertained by Jean Stewart, Colin Fingers Henry and Gracie B, and were treated to the delights of a varied delicious cuisine provided by Sandra Bishop Occasions Catering. A raffle and auction raised over £1,300 towards a new horse, this was subsequently made up to £2000 by a donation of £527 from Chris West of NCM Roadshow. Colin Wedd, the founder of the Rossington Hall Group of the RDA, and the Northern Racing College was presented with a gift marking the event. The RDA Trustees would like to thank everyone who donated or attended in support of this unique event, in particular, Ian Straw and the Vulcan to the Sky Trust volunteers and Chris West of NCM Roadshow, without whom the Ball couldn't have been the huge success that it was. It was a very special night. In South Yorkshire, we the Police, refer to a ‘Crime calendar’ in relation to the type and volume of crime we expect to occur. Crime statistics prove that at different times of the year, certain crimes increase in number. We adapt or introduce a strategy in an effort to combat these increases. During early spring and into summer, the number of sneak-in burglary offences increase, along with thefts from sheds and outbuildings in gardens. As the good weather improves, people often spend more time outside in their garden; this can be time spent relaxing or working in the garden itself. Whatever your reason for being in the garden do not leave your house door unlocked. If you are in the rear garden and not in sight of the rear door, secure that door as well. Offenders have and will continue to take advantage of the weather and simply walk into houses with unlocked and in some cases, open doors. If you are inside the house, require some ventilation, and decide to open a window, always secure that window when you leave that particular room. If a window is open, the thief can reach in and steal anything within reach or open the window and climb into the room. I am preparing my garden for the growing season. My lawnmower and garden tools have been serviced, cleaned and sharpened. I am lucky in that I can secure my garden tools and car in my garage. Garden tools such as mowers, trimmers and strimmer’s are in demand during the summer and if left unattended in a garden or an open shed or garage, they will be an easy target for a thief. Lock away your property when not in use. I have marked my lawn mower, hedge trimmers etc. with my postcode and house number using an electric engraving tool and then highlighting this using bright yellow paint. By marking it visibly, you are making less attractive to someone else and therefore it is less likely to be stolen. Even thieves prefer pristine unmarked tools; they can sell it for a higher price. Burglary prevention advice can be found on the South Yorkshire police website at http://www.southyorkshire.police.uk/sites/default/files/4-9-14%20Janes%20approved%20artwork.pdf

Hatfield Community Library The last two weeks has seen the library full of children as we welcomed Hungerhill and its feeder schools which were taking part in the Kate Greenaway Illustration competition. The children were shown the short list of books and had to vote for what they thought was the best illustrated book. I thought the choice was quite difficult this year. There were some beautifully illustrated books to choose from. The children had a search task, a song to sing and refreshments-the chocolate biscuits were very popular! I don’t often get the chance to mention the volunteers who keep the library open. We could not keep running if we didn’t have our dedicated volunteers. Most volunteers have been with us for a while. Those borrowers who come in regularly on the same day will know who the volunteers are on that day. Mon.am Dave (committee), Sarah, June H, pm Lorraine, (committee) Margaret. Tues.am Dave (committee), Anne, Doreen, pm Sue L (committee), Sue H, Liz, June B. Wed am Dave (committee), Patricia. Reading Group 3:00-4:00pm. This is a small, friendly group which meets on the last Tuesday of each Month. We have an informal discussion about the books we read.
