Welcome to the June 2019 issue of The Hatfield Arrow! We have some new advertisers this month, please remember if you use any of the businesses that advertise in the magazine to let them know where you saw their advert. It really helps them to know what advertising works and what doesn’t. Also let me know if you have used any of the businesses in the magazine and any comments regarding their work, products etc. Its good to have recommendations. Please forward any details of fundraising events, School Summer Fayres etc that you would like including in the upcoming issues.

Community News Spring has officially sprung at Quarry Park! We have some lovely photos from our work day on the 3rd May! Dandelions are so important for bees in the first few weeks of spring. They can be the only food source around, so let them flower before the go to seed. Our Work Party got a little bit soggy this month, but our hard working volunteers still got their jobs done. Our next Work Party day will be on Friday 7th June and we meet at 10am at the Green Flag pole. Everybody is welcome and equipment and refreshments are provided. We hope to see you there! NB: Our July Work Party will be on a Saturday! If you work during the week then this is a perfect opportunity for you to get involved. If you would like to be included on our mailing list about workdays and other activities that are going on in Quarry Park, please email: thequarrypark@gmail.com Find us on Facebook @FriendsOfQuarryPark or contact us on thequarrypark@gmail.com

Chapterhouse Theatre Company to appear at Epworth Old Rectory Lincoln based Chapterhouse Theatre Company is bringing Pride and Prejudice to the Old Rectory in Epworth. This will be the first time this company has performed at the Rectory and I'm sure it won't be their last. This is a troupe of eight actors who will interpret the well loved drama often seen on television; the story of intelligent, high spirited and strong young women living in a time when women were considered inferior and had very few rights, just like our story of Susanna Wesley. The Bennett sisters story may be a hundred or so years later, but they, liker Susanna struggled with adversity and won through to a successful outcome. I don't need to tell you the plot - you probably know it from the films just as well as I do, but what will be interesting will be to see how the main characters are portrayed live on our formal lawn. Tickets can be obtained on line or from the Rectory, and do remember to come early and bring your picnic. For more information or enquiries please contact the Rectory on 01427 872268, or simply call in whenever we are open. Cath Fordham

Community News HATFIELD WOODHOUSE AMATEUR GARDENING SOCIETY The Society had its annual Plant Sale on Tuesday, 7 May in Hatfield Woodhouse Club. Members and guests provided a large selection of plants of all sizes, from seedlings to mature plants and small trees and shrubs. Most of these were sold on the night, and the majority of the rest were donated to the 18 May Plant Sale at Hatfield Church. One unusual feature of the event was that one of our members donated about thirty onion seedlings which could be taken for free. The attached condition to the gift is that the seedlings are grown on and the mature onion entered in the September Autumn Show in the “Largest Onion” Class. Considering the number of onions taken, we will have to extend the Show Benches in September. The Society Chairman told everybody about the Committee’s suggestion for the Annual Outing in August. After discussion about the date of the Outing, the suggestion was favourably accepted. The Chairman said that details of the date and price would be announced at the June meeting. Our next meeting is on Tuesday 4 June when our Speaker will be Norman Jones whose subject is “Icelandic Exploration”. As usual we will meet at Hatfield Woodhouse Club commencing at 7-30pm. Everyone is invited, members and non members alike.

Friends Of Hatfield Church Building Trust have a Derby Day Coffee Morning on Sat 1st June 10am till noon in The Barn, Hatfield, behind The Bay Horse. Fun Derby Sweepstake as well as homemade cakes for sale, Tombola & raffle. All welcome. Also Pre Loved Jewellery stall at Finningley Village Hall Table Top & Car Boot Sale on Bank Holiday Monday 27th May from 10am till 2pm. Behind The Harvey Arms, near The Church. HTCC Pavilion Project News Since the last issue there has been some amazing news with regards to our plans to build a new community pavilion. After several months of hard work by the committee Sport England have committed to providing £75,000 partnership funding towards the project. The confirmation of the award stated 'awards at this amount are rare and so it is positive that the panel agreed your project was worthy of such investment'. The club are now pursuing every possible avenue to find the funding to match this and help bring the project to fruition. If you would like to assist with the project n any way please get in touch with the club at hatfieldtown@outlook.com On the field it's been a positive start with all the sides recording victories. The 1st XI currently sit second in Division Two after convincing wins against Streethouse, Whitley Bridge and Pledwick. The 2nd XI have won both their completed fixtures, against Ryhill and West Bretton, in convincing fashion but were thwarted by the weather when in a dominant position away at Featherstone having posted 264/6. The Sunday League side have also been dominant in recording 3 straight wins to sit top of Division 3 and the Evening League side started their season off with a 10 wicket win at home to Doncaster Town. It's been a frustrating time for the junior sides with fixtures being affected by the weather and opposition team withdrawals. The new Under 9's team did manage to record a victory at home to Warmsworth. The ladies Softball Cricket team are also now training each Friday evening at 6:00pm and looking forward to beginning their fixtures, if you are interested in getting involved get in touch with Joanna on 07982 729749.

Hatfield Community Library News Item May 2019 Over the last two weeks the library has been ringing to the tune of the “Greenaway” song when some of the local schools have been visiting us to take part in the Kate Greenaway illustration competition. The library was host to Hungerhill School who brought in their feeder schools to vote for the book with the best illustrations and take part in a treasure hunt which used clues from the stories. The library was a bit manic with the industrious eager children searching among the books and shelves but the art class and family history class coped magnificently. I think I even caught some of them humming the Greenaway tune! It is one of those tunes which can linger on in your head. The children all behaved well and were a credit to their schools. The Easter activity, which was Sand Art, was enjoyed by 30+ children and parents/carers. Everyone enjoyed this popular activity. The children all made at least three pictures which they were able to take home. We are booking our activities for the summer holidays. We are hoping to have at least two activities per week so that children will have the opportunity to come to some events at some point in the holidays. The events will be advertised in the local publications and on the DMBC library website as well as on the library front window. Some of the Head Teachers have given me permission to put a notice on their school railings which is wonderful. I also hope to visit schools to talk about our activities. So far we have confirmed two Lego Robotic sessions, Kimmo and an activity with the Literacy Team to link with the Summer Reading Challenge theme of Space. Some of our activities will be creative craft sessions. All our events are free and refreshments are provided. We also have our Drama event on Saturday July 27th. The tickets (which are about£5) will include refreshments but you will need to bring your own alcoholic beverages. I will give more details nearer the time. Borrowers may have noticed that we have been shutting early at 2:30 on Friday afternoons. This is because of staff shortages at the moment. If anyone wishes to volunteer to help out on Friday afternoon, please contact the library. It does not have to be every Friday as many people like to go away at the weekend. We would also love another person (or even two people)to help out with Story/Rhyme time on Monday Mornings. This could be as little as one session per month or more if you wish. The small team plan and support the activities, Again, if you are interested, please contact the library. WEEKLY CLASSES MONDAY, Rhyme Time 10:3-11:30am, Children’s stories and songs. The Club is grateful to Alan Pickersgill and Glynn Raynor for their help and support during their time on the committee, and welcome Patricia Woodward and Michael Farrand who were elected along with David Ulyett, Graham Linley, Jackie Woodward and Lynda Ulyett . Mark Harrison volunteered to audit the accounts and Bill Mitchell as Exhibition Organiser. In the latest competition, Roger Poyser CPAGB, from York, judged. The theme was Kitchen Utensils, and members came up with some innovative ideas. Roger chose Michael Jackson’s Banana Whisk first, Getting the Point by Colin Jarvis second and Jean Goodburne’s Patterns in Utensils third. In the Open section, the standard was quite high. Eventually Roger decided on Gothic Queen by Lynda Ulyett as his favourite, with Bee on Tulip by Doreeen Hookway second, and Steampunk Lady by Terry Gunnill third. Commended and Highly Commended were: Julia Jackson, Michael Donnison (2), Sharen Thompson, Ian Thompson, Jean Goodburne (2), Lynda Ulyett , Doreen Hookway and Colin Jarvis. Since then, practical sessions and tutorials were led by members. Affinity software was discussed with useful instructional presentations for guidance. Photostory 3 was also demonstarated, with the addition of sound to the visual presentations giving a new dimension to previous sessions. During the summer months, as well as the Summer School, members will be able to go on outings to places of interest. The Autumn programme commences on 16th September.
