Welcome

to the June issue of The Hatfield Arrow.

It feels so good to be back and we are so sorry we didn’t produce the May issues of the Arrow. We felt it was the right thing to do to protect our delivery staff and readers when there were still many unknowns about Covid 19. We have given careful consideration to when would be the right time to produce a new issue and taken advice from public health, local government, Royal Mail and others within this sector. I am sure you will have been moved by the generosity of our community, their spirit, good humour and positivity. At such a bleak time, there is so much to be thankful for. I am humbled by the commitment and motivation of our NHS staff who are working with this virus daily and carers who are living with it in their care homes. I sincerely hope we never forget your bravery. To the army of support that has kept us all going, our local shop keepers, I don’t know how we could manage without you and hope we continue to repay your hard work and effort in the future by shopping local. Our police, Fire Service, bus drivers, shop workers, DMBC staff, teachers and of course, everyone within the community who has volunteered their help and support to those in need and looked after their neighbours. Our next challenge after lockdown is how we learn to live with the threat of this virus. We still need to work, be educated, exercise, care, and socialise. Social distancing is paramount to reducing transmission as well as regular handwashing. We all have a responsibility to beat this virus and this is the only way we can help until our scientists find a treatment or vaccine. So, until we are safe, this community will continue to do what is does best, support one another, look after our most vulnerable and be mindful of how we can reduce the chances of transmission. The deadline for the July issue is Wednesday 17th June. The July issue will be distributed the weekend beginning 26th June.

Keep safe everyone. Julie Morrell

Community News FRIENDS OF HATFIELD CHURCH BUILDING TRUST

Sadly we have had to postpone our annual Coach Trip to Ripon & Markenfield Hall from 21st May until Thurs 17th Sep which is still a ‘provisional date’ until we know what the travel rules will be by then. There were some tickets left, £20 each, with local pick ups/drop offs so if you want to register your interest just drop me a text or call 07873 340307 and I can add your name to the list. Firstly, we would like to pass on our sincere condolences to those in our area that have been affected by the terrible virus and wish those currently suffering a speedy and full recovery. The issues the situation has caused us as a club pale into insignificance compared to the personal suffering. At present we still await news as to whether there will be any team cricket played this season, after months of preparation and great support from our sponsors it has been a big disappointment that we have not been able to have our usual community events at the ground. Cancelling our VE Day plans was particularly disappointing given it's poignancy. The first tentative steps towards playing have been taken and one to one training sessions can now take place at the ground under strict rules and we are happy to ensure we meet those rules in order to allow some physical activity for our members. Whilst the seniors have been keeping in touch through social media and we have been sending our juniors activities and challenges nothing can beat getting outdoors and active, even with the restrictions in place, and the players have been quick to get out on the field in their socially distanced pairs. As with any organisation, a charity such as ours that relies upon subscriptions and income from fundraising events has been hit hard financially, especially as we had already outlaid all our major pre-season spending totally several thousand pounds but the local council have provided support in helping ensure we will still be here when the community needs us. Our plans for a community pavilion had taken a big step forward at the beginning of this year with additional funding in the pipeline to allow a build to commence this autumn and we were eagerly putting the build programme in place. This funding is unlikely to be available when the crisis subsides given the finances that have understandably been required elsewhere, we will have to re-assess where this leaves us when we have some form of certainty. We will keep you updated as and when we can. Stay safe everyone and thank you for all your support.

HATFIELD WOODHOUSE AMATEUR GARDENING SOCIETY Like all other small clubs and organisations we have had to cancel our current meetings because of the current COVID19 lockdown. Indeed, with hindsight we were very lucky to be able to hold our Spring Show not long before the emergency started, which was reported in the April edition of the Hatfield Arrow. As far as the future goes, we will have to wait for Government advice on how we can proceed, but all of our plans are on hold at least until the beginning of September. This means that we will definitely NOT be having our Annual Outing, which is a great pity because we were planning to visit Burton Agnes Hall and Gardens and Bridlington in August. Perhaps next year! The Autumn Show is scheduled for Saturday, 12 September. Whether this will go ahead or not will of course depend on any rules still in place for social distancing, and also access to Hatfield Woodhouse Club. Nevertheless, keep on growing your vegetables and flowers so that we can, hopefully, all enjoy them in September.

Changes at Thorne Camera Club Unfortunately, due to the Corona Virus epidemic, Thorne Camera Club meetings are suspended until further notice. This meant the postponement of the Annual General Meeting, a prospective Birds of Prey photo shoot, an invited speaker, and some of the summer outings. However, before any compulsory isolation, members met in Thorne Park for an informal, socially distanced meet and photo shoot out in the fresh air. Trying out his new camera Mike wandered in the direction of the bridge. He said, ‘ I took this photo on a Monday evening at 6.50pm, quite a dark evening. The camera, an Olympus OMD, was hand held, resting on the foot bridge. It was taken on a shutter speed of 1.6 seconds, with stabilisation.’ Since then, members have continued sharing photographs with others, even if only of flowers in their own back garden. It is now seven years since Thorne Camera Club started. Most of you have heard of the ‘seven-year itch’, and it seems some members are experiencing this phenomenon. After a recent visit to judge a competition, Lynn Haith LRPS sent the following message: I just wanted to thank you, David, and all your members, for such a warm welcome and kind hospitality at Thorne CC. The large entry meant keeping a close check on the clock, but I was pleased to conclude pretty much on time – even if the break was slightly late! Certainly, my job was not made easy with the variety of subjects and range of skill shown in your Open and “Treasured Things” PDI competitions, but I very much enjoyed seeing everyone's work and the sheer creativity demonstrated in some of the images. This kind of praise for members of the club encourages and inspires them to better things. Several are interested in advancing their work with the possibility of, in the future, entering salons and exhibitions, and gaining distinctions. The local Wath Salon was a starting point, where some members have already had work accepted, as well as the Yorkshire Photographic Union and other national salons and exhibitions, so use the summer to carry on improving your photography. Just because we are all confined to home for the majority of the time does not stop members getting together. Mike D initiated the idea of online conferencing, and to date several members have joined in on a Monday evening for a virtual Camera Club meeting. As ever, any new developments are sent to members via email. Current Chairman, David, will keep you posted.

Hatfield Community Library News This is a strange article to be writing for as you know all libraries are now closed. However, there is a little bit I can write about. First of all, I would like to apologise to our borrowers for the rather sudden closure of our library. On Monday March 16th the PM announced that all over 70s with underlying health problems should stay at home. We decided to shut the library immediately because more than half of the volunteers, who work on the desk, are over 70 and some have underlying health problems. Some of our “younger volunteers” have family at home who also have health problems and would not wish to put them in danger. That meant we could not run a satisfactory service. We have about 26 volunteers on our books who run or help with our activities or deal with the financial side but only 13 actually work on the desk. Not all of them have been available over the past few weeks (being in foreign lands, or dealing with other things) so we were a bit short staffed to begin with. That is why I have been seen in the library on more than my usual times. As you will appreciate, all our staff are volunteers and we have to juggle with family commitments and our own leisure time (and even housework and cooking and shopping)- But we do enjoy working in the library and meeting the lovely people who come in for books and clubs or even just to wait for a bus. Do not worry about overdue books, even if you have had an email (like me) saying that your books are overdue as there will be no fines levied. Many people who use the library are also in the older age bracket so I hope you are all keeping safe and listening to the health advice given by the government. I know that after the first euphoria of not having to leap out of bed before 6:30 am to take the grandchildren to school has worn off, it is tedious not to be able to go and do all the activities we have taken for granted. I still get up early for my morning walk- avoiding dog walkers and joggers to an almost rude degree but I do wave and shout hello to show it’s not personal. I can find things to do at home-not always things I want to do like spring cleaning! I sorted out my hundreds of photos and had happy memories looking at them. Talked to and seen friends and family on WhatsApp. I can now see three different households at the same time. I found the little person icon in the top right corner that lets you add others to the conversation. I have even tussled (mainly unsuccessfully) with on-line shopping. The use of library on-line resources has increased and in some cases been extended temporarily for use from home. See our web page at: https://library.doncaster.gov.uk/web/arena/a-z-eresources Our latest addition RBDigital which launched 29th April for eMagazines, eComics and eNewspapers has been greatly received by our library members with 626 magazines, 81 comics and being downloaded so far. By the end of this week OverDrive eBooks and eAudio books will launch giving additional choice of titles to Borrowbox for our readers. Borrowers can also use Ancestry and Find my Past at home. If you have ever thought of looking up relatives and not had the time then this is the opportunity to do so. All you need is your card number and PIN as for all on-line services. If you have forgotten your PIN, I believe that you can contact DMBC and be helped with this. We have no idea when the library will reopen, but one of our volunteers is doing the weekly safety checks so that we will be able to open as soon as the all clear is given- whenever that is. In the meantime, stay safe, be well and keep reading.

Evidence of just some of the things taking place at Sheep Dip Lane Academy throughout lockdown.

Staff and children at Sheep Dip Lane Academy have been thinking of those teachers that are working remotely in order to keep the children busy whilst working at home. As well as the staff and children working remotely we would like to thank Mrs Sparrow for her lovely ideas with the children in school. The children loved making a banner to show their appreciation for all the hard working NHS staff and key workers and VE day celebrations at school included preparing the outside area, Creative Celebrations and Creative Making.
