Please mention “The Arrow when responding to advertisements
Welcome to the March 2019 Issue of The Hatfield Arrow. Please remember to mention the Hatfield Arrow wherever you use the local businesses that advertise. The Hatfield Arrow relies heavily on the support of the local businesses advertising their goods or services. Without them it would not be possible every month. Also, remember that we have a business directory listing at the back of the magazine. If you are looking for a local tradesman, electrician, plumber, tiler etc, you should find what you are looking for, if not throughout the magazine then hopefully in the business directory. Look out for the new additions each month. The cost for advertising in the Business Directory is ÂŁ30 plus vat for a 12 month entry. Please contact me if you would like your business details including. The deadline for the April issue is Thursday 14th March.
Best Wishes Julie Morrell

Hatfield Community Library The library has been fairly busy since the beginning of the year which is good news for us. We still have the occasional computer blip when books are not recorded when taken out by a borrower or the computers are on a go slow. I’m sure they have independent brains as they always choose a busy time to play up. A bit like a wayward child. Sometimes we have to record all the information by hand then put it in the computers when they are back up. Thank you for your patience when this has happened as borrowers have to wait while we do all the recording. I remember those little brown cards with slips of card in which were stamped when books were due back then a stamp in the book itself. Simpler times! However, it is much easier to find and order books for borrowers on the computer and to let people know if their books are in or are going to be overdue so I suppose I shouldn’t be too nostalgic. Lego robotics. We do have a half term activity on Thursday Feb.21st. This article might not be out in time but I have put up notices and informed schools. It also, hopefully, on DMBC library website. This activity is mainly for KS2 children. Younger children may need some adult help. Please ring to book a place as this is a popular activity. The Bridge Club and Games Café are for the residents of the DN7 but all are welcome and we would not turn away anyone from outside the DN7 area. If you have friends who would like to come with you bring them along. The Bridge Club is for beginners and improvers. Tuition is available and better players will help the beginners. A variety of games are played at the Games Cafe. If you like Scrabble etc. but have no-one to play with join the games group. Several more People have joined both clubs in recent weeks which is good news. If you know anyone who feels housebound or wants to join a sociable group, tell them to come along. Refreshments are available Meet Your Community. Members of the team will be in the library on the last Thursday of the month and will be able to discuss a variety of things such as: -finding out how to stay independent in your own home for longer, improve your wellbeing, gain support for physical or mental health conditions or volunteering for a local organisation. Please ring to check that the community team is in. Jigsaws. There is now a permanent jigsaw table in the library for anyone who would like to sit for a while, have a coffee/tea and do part of a jigsaw. I have a sneaky feeling that the library volunteers (myself included) have enjoyed this activity. We have a very able volunteer who puts everyone’s mistakes right. It can be really therapeutic as you forget about the rest of the world while trying to find that elusive piece. We also have a jigsaw swap shelf. You can bring a finished jigsaw and swap it for another one WEEKLY CLASSES - MONDAY, Rhyme Time 10:30 Children’s stories and songs. This is a fun session for pre-school children and parents/carers. Local Charity Supported by South Yorkshire’s Community Foundation Citizens Advice Doncaster Borough has been able to upgrade IT equipment in its Thorne office thanks to a grant of £4000 which was funded by E.ON’s Tween Bridge Wind Farm Community Benefit Fund through South Yorkshire’s Community Foundation. Last year the charity helped over 9000 clients with more than 31000 issues, handling over £6 million debt, and client statistics show that demand for services rises year on year. Mrs Karen Bothamley, CEO of Citizens Advice Doncaster Borough, said, “The majority of our IT equipment is outdated and unable to cope with vastly increased client numbers and new initiatives such as advice by webchat. Cuts over many years have meant that we have not been able to replace machines when we needed to. The new computers and printers will make the jobs of volunteer advisers working in our Thorne office much easier, and some of the machines will allow us to help clients to set up and access Universal Credit accounts. We are very grateful for the support of South Yorkshire’s Community Foundation – we would have really struggled to upgrade our equipment without them.”

Citizens Advice Marks Fuel Poverty Awareness Day
on 15th February
2019 Citizens Advice are working with National Energy Action, MPs and local authorities to raise awareness of support available for those in fuel poverty. Fuel Poverty affects many people within our communities and contributes to health problems and excess winter deaths. Raised awareness of how to save money on energy costs by switching energy supplier or tariff, accessing discounts or grants, and making homes more energy efficient can make a real difference to people’s lives and health. In the 6 months to the end of March 2019 Citizens Advice expect to have helped 120 vulnerable consumers across Doncaster who are struggling to pay their bills and heat their homes. Liz Ramage, Citizens Advice campaign coordinator, said, “Don’t be cold because you cannot afford to pay fuel bills. You have a right to free help. We see clients who have self-disconnected when they can’t afford energy bills and people are having to choose between heating and eating. We can deal with most issues which prevent people from keeping their homes warm –including struggling to pay bills, getting a better energy deal, problems with your energy bill and claiming back credit due.” Citizens Advice Doncaster Borough is a registered charity, number 1174228 and can be contacted on 0344 499 4137 or 01405 741457

Improving Images at Thorne Camera Club The new programme began with a review of the interclub competition images. Led by the Chairman, David, members considered the remarks the judge had made about images. Judges try to help improve photography, by pointing out things that could be done, and how to do it. Sometimes in a competition, things move quickly, so there is little time to consider the remarks. This session gave members more time to discuss what was said, what was meant, how to do the things suggested, and get feedback from other members as well. Most thought it was a very useful and informative session, and some asked for more such evenings. No doubt this session proved useful when members entered images for a Club competition , with Robert Helliwell ARPS of York judging. One of his main comments was about bland skies, and how a more interesting sky can add to an image. A note to be made regarding a tutorial on how to change a sky! Robert’s choice of images for the theme of Sepia Toned, was Hope Springs Eternal by John Marshall LRPS, Ghostly Shoppers by David Ulyett, Zoe by Mark Harrison, and Time to Reflect by Michael Donnison. In the Open section his choices were Tour de Yorkshire by Colin Jarvis, Leopard at Lunch by Patricia Woodward, and Cromer Pier at Sunset by Lynda Rhodes. All were Highly Commended. Using an instructional DVD by Ken Payne, members were shown how to darken down bright spots, and had the opportunity to have a go at the Laptop Night. Working through what Ken had said, following the steps on the DVD, some good attempts were made at enhancing one of their images. Those without a laptop found a fellow member to share with, and as two heads are better than one, so the saying goes, learned from each other. The final meeting of the month, the ‘ piece de resistance’ as she surely must enjoy being billed, Andrea Hargreaves MPAGB, EFIAP/b, BPE3*, PSA4 presented her images and prints for the delight of club members, and also gave details of how she began her photographic journey from a beginner to a Master in eight years, plus how she produced her winning images for the assessment. Her approach to digital photography elevates it to an art form with stunning images inspired by Norse mythology, yet every element is from a photograph she has taken. It was a stunning and mesmerising presentation with images we can only dream of emulating. There’s a lot more good stuff to come in the Spring Programme, so if you think you’d like to join the Club, contact David on 07643821182 or email on thornecameraclub@yahoo.co.uk
