Please remember to mention the Hatfield Arrow wherever you use the local businesses that advertise. The Hatfield Arrow relies heavily on the support of the local businesses advertising their goods or services. Without them it would not be possible every month. Also, remember that we have a business directory listing at the back of the magazine. If you are looking for a local tradesman, electrician, plumber, tiler etc, you should find what you are looking for, if not throughout the magazine then hopefully in the business directory. Look out for the new additions each month. Contact
Julie Morrell The cost for advertising in the Business Directory is ÂŁ30 plus vat for a 12 month on 01302 351760 entry. Community News HATFIELD WOODHOUSE AMATEUR GARDENING SOCIETY The speaker at our “late” January meeting was Peter Barnard who gave a presentation on “Apple Trees”, not the “Trees in the Garden” previously advertised. This was a wide ranging talk, amply illustrated, about all aspects of growing and maintaining apple trees. Roy initially spoke about the thousands of varieties of apples varieties still in existence with especial reference to the National Fruit Collection at Brogdale in Kent. He then went on to the use of grafting on to root stocks to produce trees of the required size, and methods of pruning to maintain optimum fruit production and reduce tree size if necessary. These methods were illustrated with prunings recently removed from his own trees. Also, Roy had brought a large selection of apples for us to taste, indicating the flavour and sweetness differences in the these varieties. It was noticeable that in general they all had a softer texture and skin than the varieties we are offered in supermarkets, which are usually of a firm texture and fairly hard skin, presumably bred because they are not easily damaged by transportation. Then at our most recent meeting on Tuesday 4 February our speaker was Sarah Hopps with her journey “Touring the Gardens of Europe”. We had a fantastic evening with Sarah who a well known gardener, show judge at the highest level, and tour guide. The presentation began with a general introduction and a talk about some of the many pot plants she had brought with her and which made a lovely backdrop on the stage. We then had a whistle stop tour of many of the famous gardens of Europe starting in Madeira. We then moved to Italy to Mortola, the famous Hanbury Garden near the French border and then into France itself. Here there was an initial focus on the Menton Lemon Festival and nearby gardens including Serre de la Madone built by the American Laurence Johnstone which has links with Hidcote Manor Garden in the UK. Then up through France stopping off at Giverny and finally into Belgium. This was a real treat for the Society members and guests and was enjoyed by all. On Tuesday 4 March we will have a presentation by Jill and Martin Fish called “Gardening on the Menu”. Martin will be talking about growing plants to be used in the kitchen, and then Jill’s recipes will feature with we understand some samples. This promises to be another great evening. It will be held as usual at Hatfield Woodhouse Club commencing at 7-30pm. As usual everybody is welcome. And shortly after that on Saturday 14 March the Society will hold its Spring Show in Hatfield Woodhouse Club. This will be open to the public at 2pm and everybody is welcome.
Friends of Quarry Park Friends of Quarry Park held their first volunteer work party of the year on Friday 7 February. There was a great turnout with 11 volunteers supported by 2 of the DMBC Countryside team. Gorse was cut back and cleared on a section of the blue walking route. This had been growing over several years and was well and truly out of control. This essential work had to be completed at this time of year before the birds start nesting so they are not disturbed. A small team of litter pickers worked in “the dip” and on the Post Office path. They even retrieved an article of clothing high up in a tree thanks to some excellent work with long rakes. It just shows how a willing, hardworking team can make a big difference in a relatively short time. New volunteers are always welcome to join this friendly team, all tools and protective clothing are provided and it’s not all work, there is time for a chat and a laugh in the break for refreshments. Meet at the Green Flagpole at 10 a.m on the first Friday of each month. The sunny days this last few weeks have highlighted signs of spring on its way in Quarry Park with spring bulbs starting to make an appearance. The snowdrops scattered through the woodland are a pleasure to see. The newly planted ones have a way to go yet but the more established clumps are showing the treats instore for future years. Dates for your diary: - Next Volunteer Work Party Friday 6 March at 10am. Open Meeting Wednesday 18 March in the Methodist Church, Greens Road, Dunsville at 7 p.m. All welcome. This is an informal meeting to give those interested in Quarry Park an opportunity to meet the Friends, hear their plans and have their own input. April Volunteer Work Party Friday 3 April at 10 a.m, this will be combined with the Keep Britain Tidy Great British Spring Clean, a special litter pick when the Friends will once again join with other groups across the country to tidy up their areas. quarrypark@gmail.com Facebook Page: Friends of Quarry Park

Hatfield Woodhouse Primary School By: Lola, Bertie and Mylie
Hello, welcome to Hatfield Woodhouse Primary. We have all been working very hard on all our work and have progressed with the help of are brilliant teachers. Here are some things that have been going on superb, special school… Chinese New Year: In January we celebrated the Chinese New Year. It’s now the year of the rat! Fs2 did some exciting things to do with the Chinese new year on the 24th of January . A company called Debutots came to our school to tell the story of the Chinese new year. Fs2 also had a Chinese banquet with lots of yummy Chinese food. Here are some quotes from the children. Hope says, “We ate crackers! They were yummy!!!!!” Sophia told us, “We ate worms. They were noodles but they looked like worms. They were so nice! ” Yr. 5 Remember Me Dementia trip On the 27th of January Flamingo class went to watch a play held by the Doncaster Council about Dementia. It was a very touching story line nearly the whole class teared up (especially the three of us!) here are some quotes from year 5. Riley said, “It was nice to learn about Dementia.” Lola told us, “It was a rollercoaster of emotions.” Imogen said, “It was a moving story-line.” Reece said. “It was a good play.” Lawrence mentioned, “it was good and It taught us a lot about Dementia and about people that suffer from Dementia.” Finally, James told us, “It was really good and I got to ask a question which was when you get Dementia does your brain sit still and do nothing and will it rot away?” Ash Hill Heart Science Experiment. On Tuesday Y5 and 6 had a visit from Ash Hill to do a fun experiment about our heart and the human body. Surprisingly, after our break the session the year 7 science teacher set up three real life lamb hearts on our tables! On the tables there was real scalpels that doctors use when they do surgery! We had to cut open the lambs heart and tell witch part of the heart is what. Here are some quotes Tarn said, “It was juicy I loved experimenting the heart." Jack said, “The memories of cutting up the heart will stay with me for eternity!” It was a fantastic morning.
Cannon Hall Trip Year 5 went on a trip last week to Cannon Hall. We dressed up as Victorian servants and worked in the house for the day. The jobs we did were: washing, cooking, organising the larder. We also had a tour of the house. We ate the food we cooked- the bread was delicious. James said, “It was good because we got to experience life as servants in the Victorian times.” Ben told us, “We got to learn how hard the servants used to work.” See you all next time!

Thorne Camera Club Spring into Spring Thanks to the work of the Committee, the Spring Programme is as varied and interesting as usual, with a mix of competitions, demonstrations, tutorials and speakers. This month’s competition was judged by Dave Burgess MA (Photo) ARPS from Castleford. He found the theme, Magic Moments, a good choice with a variety of subject matter covered. Family and friends are hard to fit into club themes generally, but this theme was perfect. ‘Kelpies at Sunset’ by Tom O’Shea was the judge’s first choice, closely followed by ‘Family Moment’ by Terry Gunnill and ‘Across the Generations’ by Lynda Ulyett. Commended were Norman Pugh, David Ulyett and Mike Donnison. In the Open section, where just about anything goes, Terry Gunnill was first again with ‘Autumn’, closely followed by Mike Donnison’s ‘Splash’ and Norman Pugh’s ‘North Bay, Flamborough’. Highly Commended were Bill Mitchell and Colin Jarvis, Commended were Trevor Holt, Terry Gunnill and Bill Mitchell. A Visit to Kirk Bramwith for the Snowdrop Festival is always popular, and this year was no exception. Flowering quite early, the churchyard is carpeted with snowdrops. So members got some lovely photos. At Thorne CC members like to share their experience with others, so were given a demonstration of portraits using only one light. With the use of modern technology, members watched live time, images produced by tethering the camera, laptop and projector. Changes of angle of light made different moods and atmospheres to images of competent models Ishaia, Ophelia and Morganrose. A very talented family, they later posed for members to take some photos of their own. Maybe some of these portraits will figure in two other competitions to be held in the near future, the InterClub Contest with Winteringham CC, hosted this time by Winteringham. Then the Annual Sheffield Photographic Society Knockout Competition, between twenty to thirty clubs from around the region. Sadly, Wath Salon was cancelled this year, after almost forty consecutive years, due to the lack of volunteers to run it, a sad case, but sadly not a rare state of affairs. If you have an interest in Photography and would like to visit the club, do go along to a meeting in Thorne Methodist Church Hall on Mondays at 7.15 ( except Bank Holidays ) where meetings will be held until the end of May. You will be made most welcome and your first visit is free of charge. Or contact David on 07463821182 or email thornecameraclub@yahoo.co.uk
