Please mention “The Arrow” when responding to advertisements

Welcome to the March 2022 issue of the Hatfield Arrow.

Please remember to mention the Hatfield Arrow wherever you use the local businesses that advertise. The Hatfield Arrow relies heavily on the support of the local businesses advertising their goods or services. Without them it would not be possible every month. Also, remember that we have a business directory listing at the back of the magazine. If you are looking for a local tradesman, electrician, plumber, tiler etc, you should find what you are looking for, if not throughout the magazine then hopefully in the business directory. Look out for the new additions each month. The deadline for the April issue is Thursday 17th March. Best Wishes Julie Morrell Tel: 07854 880882 Julie@arrowpublications.co.uk www.arrowpublications.co.uk Find us on facebook

HATFIELD WOODHOUSE AMATEUR GARDENING SOCIETY The first day of the month was our date for the February meeting. We were very pleased to welcome, once again, Steve Lovell, with a presentation about the geography and flora and fauna of parts of Scotland. Steve look us on a journey from North Berwick near Edinburgh to the Black Isle north of Inverness. Bass Rock is near North Berwick and is famous for the huge numbers of gannets that breed and roost there. We went up into the Cairngorms to see red squirrels and pine martins, and also featured the ospreys and reindeer near Aviemore. Steve told us about introductions such as the European Beaver and re-wilding projects in the Cairngorms. He finished the talk at the Black Isle, which is not an island but a peninsula and so called because of the almost black, very fertile soil in that area. This was another well illustrated talk by Steve, greatly enjoyed by the good attendance. The Spring Show date is creeping upon us, Saturday 12 March at Hatfield Woodhouse Club. This will be our first Show for two years having just got the 2020 one in before the lockdowns started. There is one change to the published Schedule. Class 34 will now be “Jar of Fruit Jelly”, instead of “Four Hen’s Eggs”. But of course before that we have the usual March evening meeting on Tuesday 1 March commencing at 7-30pm. We will be welcoming Don Witton, another of our returning guest speakers who this time will present a ”Calendar of Colour”. As usual, we will meet in the Hatfield Woodhouse Club, and everybody is welcome, members and non members alike.

Friends of Quarry Park It’s been a busy start to the new year for the volunteers. Our January work party had to be postponed due to bad weather, but we met up the following week on Friday 14th. There were 7 volunteers and support from two DMBC staff. One of the team did some litter picking, concentrating around the zip line area, collecting a substantial amount of litter. The rest of the team set about repairing, sanding, cleaning and varnishing the information boards dotted around the park. It was a beautiful sunny morning so perfect drying conditions for this task. Although it is still very early in the year, the park looked stunning in the winter sunshine and there were many people and their dogs taking advantage of the good weather. Following the work party, we were advised that DMBC have donated 700 daffodil bulbs for planting in the park, so on 28th January 4 volunteers set about planting the bulbs on the banks and in various other places around the park. It was hard going as the ground is very hard at this time of year but with great determination, they managed to get most of them planted! It was a great opportunity to use one of our recent purchases too – a folding trolley which is excellent for transporting equipment around the park. The February work party took place on a cold and windy Friday 4th. There were 10 volunteers, 2 of whom were new recruits, along with a DMBC staff member. It was great to welcome the new volunteers, Dan and Debra, especially as they brought cake for everyone!! Our main objective was to complete the varnishing of the information boards as they needed a second coat. They are looking very smart now! We also had some daffodil bulbs left to plant so 4 of the volunteers set about completing this job. Hopefully there will be a lovely show of colour in Spring for visitors to enjoy. During the morning we had a special visitor. Councillor David FiennesGregory who is the Hatfield Town Council Mayor, joined us for refreshments and presented the Friends of Quarry Park with a symbolic cheque for £200. We really appreciate Councillor Fiennes-Gregory taking the time to visit us and chat about our projects. We finished off the morning with a litter pick around the perimeter of the park. Funding is very important to our group to enable ongoing work to maintain and enhance the park’s facilities, and we have been very successful with our Grant applications recently. The first was for £200, from DMBC Councillor Glynis Smith's Member’s Ward Budget which we used to purchase a new storage facility and insurance for our equipment. The second, for £263, was for more tools and the all terrain buggy to transport our equipment around the park, courtesy Hatfield Town Council. We are very grateful for this essential financial support and we have more great grant news next month so watch this space! Work parties are usually held on the first Friday of each month, weather permitting. There is. always plenty of work to be done, from litter picking, clearing paths and cutting back vegetation. Equipment is provided but please ensure you wear suitable clothing and footwear. The next event is scheduled for Friday 4th March at 10am – 12 noon, meet at the Green Flag. Full details will be published on our Facebook page ‘Friends of Quarry Park’ or you can email us at thequarrypark@gmail.com

THORNE CAMERA CLUB The art of photography offers more than just a single printed or a digital projected image. Images can be presented in the form of 'Audio – Visual' (AV) display in which the photographer presents a series of images that tell a story over a wide spectrum of subjects ranging from amusing situations to social commentary on life and accompanied with an appropriate piece of music, commentary or both. There are a number of programmes available for the photographer to use in order to produce an AV which guide the author through the various stages of production and providing a wide range of options of visual effects on both the image and the transition between the images. A well produced AV is very rewarding to the author and provides good entertainment and food for thought for those who watch. The club is very lucky to have Graham Linley, the club's expert on AV's, who gave an entertaining presentation on how to produce and edit an AV giving tips and hints based on his experience. The evening ended with a contribution from other club members with their AV's on various topics. Ray Bramall ARPS DPAGB APAGB EFIAP was invited to judge our Open Print Competition. The number of entries was excellent and covered a wide range of subjects. Ray gave a short but concise critique of each entry and his final choice of the entries were 1st Allen Denby with James Carew, 2nd Terry Gunnill with Gold 10 and 3rd Terry Gunnill with Shambles, Highly Commended entries David Ulyett (2) Lynda Ulyett and Terry Gunnill, Commended entries Bob Allen (2) and Lynda Ulyett. Well done to all the winners and thank you to all the members who contributed to the excellent exhibition of prints on the evening. The club held it's first outing of the year with an evening visit to Lakeside Doncaster for an 'After Dark' Photo Shoot. The evening was a little on the cold side but thankfully the wind had dropped. Six members arrived at the meeting point and walked partially round the lake and on to the island before returning to the meeting point. A good night was had by all! We welcome any of the readers of our column interested in photography of whatever experience to join us on Monday evenings at 7.15 pm at the Methodist Chapel Hall. The first two meetings are free and the third meeting we would like you join the club on a regular basis. For more information please email Terry at cameraclubthorne@gmail.com MONTY'S MONTHLY TIP - Everybody likes a good portrait so for a good sharp portrait try setting the camera mode to aperture priority, set the aperture to f11, focus on the eyes and shoot.

Hatfield Woodhouse Amateur Dramatic Group The drama group, allied to the village hall, had the pleasure of presenting a Pantomime, ‘Ali Baba and the Forty Thieves’ in the early January holiday season. The cast and production staffs’ pent up desire to produce and present a festive show, after a two year hiatus, was thankfully matched by the publics’ appetite for a colourful and cheering spectacle. Following the cancellation of the pantomime in January 2021, due to the Covid pandemic, the commencement of rehearsals in late summer was greeted with great enthusiasm by the members of the group. However, the difficulties of safe rehearsals, social distancing and the ever present cloud of potential cancellation due to the Pandemic were never far from members minds. Despite the difficulties the group pulled a stunning show out of the hat. The feed back from the audiences has been so positive as to be tear inducing. The back stage and set crew worked wonders to transport everyone , by an amazing magic carpet, to a magical land full of wonder ad colour, romance, beauty and triumph of good over evil. The plot contained something for everyone. Songs by the romantic leads which put a lump in the audience’s throats and big chorus numbers to fill the hall. A classic over the top but loveable Dame. Baddies to really boo at, comedy characters serving up all the favourite gags and of course wise and just rulers. Just the thing we all wanted to see. Special thanks go to the front of house staff who worked wonders in providing a Covid secure environment for our patrons, to the sound and lighting team for a technically outstanding show, the costume team for such a colourful spectacle and of course to the musical director and our music technical director for their hard work in whipping us into shape and turning potential disaster to triumph all at the last moment. Above all our thanks to our producer/director Tina who worked so hard to produce the show and encourage, cajole and support the cast as well as painting vast swaithes of scenery The group would also like to express their thanks to the Future Biogas Group for their grant given two years ago for new rolling back cloths. This was a generous grant which not only provided stunning sets but will prove a great cost saving for future shows. This pantomime was the first time they will have been able to see the fruits of their generosity. The costs of the production were supported by a grant from NISA to whom we are also greatly indebted especially as their support has been constant over many years. All in all, life mirrored the panto plot with a colourful and heart warming start to a new year . So, it’s a, “See you all next year, Oh yes we will!” from the Cast and Crew of Hatfield Woodhouse Phoenix
