HATFIELD WOODHOUSE AMATEUR GARDENING SOCIETY

February’s meeting of the Society was a little different from usual. We did not have a gardening theme, but instead welcomed Jean Horbury whose subjects were The Aurora Centre together with her account of “Life after Adoption”.

Aurora Centres are a charity which actively promotes activities to ensure the mental and physical well being of cancer patients. It works from three sites based in Doncaster, Mexborough and Bassetlaw. The Centres run classes and support groups for cancer sufferers, but able bodied people are welcome as well. Jean started the charity after her husband died of cancer some twenty tears ago.

Jean was adopted soon after birth and the second part of he evening was the story of her search for her birth parents and their/her families. This turned out largely successfully and she is still in touch with members of her blood family. And the last part was the follow on story of how a book was written about the search, culminating in the self publication of the result. Copies of the book were on sale.

March will be an eventful month for us. On Tuesday 7 March our guest speaker will be Rachel Barrowcliffe who will give us a presentation on “Container Gardening”. This is a return visit for Rachel who spoke to us early last year. As usual we meet at Hatfield Woodhouse Club commencing at 7-30pm, and everybody is welcome, members and non members alike. Then the following Saturday, on 11 March, the Society’s first Show of he year, the Spring Show, will be held at Hatfield Woodhouse Club. Entry forms and fees for this will be accepted at the 7 March Tuesday evening meeting. Please put them in a sealed envelope. They cannot be accepted “loose” because there is the danger of “mix-ups”. Of course they can be deposited as usual as per the information in the Schedule.

Friends of Hatfield Church Building Trust Coach Trip to Southwell

The National Trust Workhouse & a local Garden Centre on Friday 12th May.

Coach pickup at Hatfield St Lawrence Church 9.20am & Hatfield Woodhouse WMC 9.30am for a 1 hour journey. Drop off in Southwell town centre for free time, perhaps visit the beautiful Minster then transfer to the very interesting Workhouse, especially if you’ve ever done Family History research, for a 2 hour visit.

The Workhouse had a huge Re-Imagining in 2019 which included adding new reception facilities, a new visitor route, digital handheld guides that tell the stories of past inmates, a new visitor hub, new information boards & redressed rooms with new props & has a small Cafe & Kitchen Garden to wander around.

Finally transfer to a lovely local garden centre with a Swan Sanctuary (extra cost) for free time or coffee before journey home at 4.30pm.

Ticket cost is £26 or only £13 if you have National Trust membership.

What a lovely way to keep fit and also have a great time, I am talking about Scottish Country Dancing which is yet another Du3a group activity. They meet every friday morning with upto 30 people turning up. The Friends Of Quarry Park

It was a lovely, mild and sunny day for the first of our two February work parties on Quarry Park with 17 willing and able volunteers, along with 2 DMBC Rangers. We concentrated our efforts firstly by planting 20 oak saplings. These were to replace the ones we had lost or that had been destroyed along the paths in between the wildflower meadows. The trees were donated by The Conservation Volunteers in partnership with OVO Energy as part of their 'I Dig Trees' project to plant over 3 million trees this year! Each volunteer planted a sapling and 'adopted it', pledging to water, nurture and look after it for the future. Please let us know via our Facebook page or our mobile 07546 595144 if you see that anything untoward has happened to them or the supports and recycled guards that protect them from the rabbits. We will be planting a further 80 saplings around the park at our Tree Planting Day on Monday 27th February 10am-12pm, all welcome to come and join us. When all the planting was finished, we split off to do other tasks. 2 removed some graffiti from the back of the climbing wall, 2 went into the woods to remove some fallen branches from near the paths while others went litter picking and collected 4 full bags. We are seeing that the old, rusty waste bins on the park are in the process of being replaced, thanks to DMBC!

After all our hard work, we ended the session with hot drinks, some delicious home baking by Debra and Julie and a good old chinwag in the sunshine. It's lovely to see that the snowdrops are now flowering and some of the early daffodils are also popping up along the bank before you go into Warren Wood. Spring is definitely on its way!

Thank you to all the volunteers and Rangers for another successful day. Work parties are usually held on the first Friday of each month, weather permitting. There is always plenty of work to be done, from litter picking, clearing paths and cutting back vegetation. Equipment is provided but please ensure you wear suitable clothing and footwear. The next events are scheduled for Monday 27th February (Tree planting) and Saturday 18th March (Great British Spring Clean) 10am – 12 noon, meet at the Green Flag.

Hello, I am sorry to have to report that burglary offences are continuing at houses with the predominant target being car keys. Thieves are actively targeting properties that have expensive cars on the drive. Burglaries are using a number of methods to enter house, but in the main, these are by snapping Euro locks in doors and smashing glass in patio and French doors. All householders should consider and implement this advice, irrespective of whether they have a car on the drive or not. Thieves consider any house a plausible target.

If your locks are older than two years, the chances are that they do not meet the latest security standards. Euro locks are simple to change and can be done by just about anyone using a screwdriver to remove and install the lock and a tape measure to measure the lock and ensure that it is the correct size.

The security standards you must look for are either TS007 3 star or SS 312 Diamond Standard. Some companies may try to sell you a one star lock matched with a two star handle stating that this is just as good. I recommend a three star lock and a two star handle, which will enhance the security level. Mater Locksmiths carry a range of these locks at different prices and they can be obtained via the Internet. Instructions on how to measure a door and fit the correct sized lock are available on YouTube, simply search the words, ‘Replacing a Euro Lock.’

The price of these locks can vary but you do not need the most expensive and I recommend a midrange priced lock as long as it meets the above security standards.

If the glass in your double glazed windows is broken for whatever reason, I recommend replacing that pane with laminated glass instead of the standard type of glass, which is known as toughened glass.

Toughened glass is designed to break in a safe manner so as to reduce injury to anyone nearby. This glass shatters completely resulting in small regular shaped pieces of glass without sharp or jagged edges. Laminated glass consists of a layer of thin clear polythene sandwiched between two pieces of glass. In the event of an attack upon the glass, the polythene holds the glass together making it very difficult for someone to smash the glass to gain entry into a house. Laminated will cost about one third more than the equivalent sized toughened glass pane. If replacing glass panes, ask for a quote for laminated. A cheaper alternative for existing glass is to fix window security film to the inside of your large windows. These are sheets of clear film, which can be fitted to the window and will reduce the ease in which the window can be smashed. They can be purchased in various thicknesses up to bomb blast quality. The minimum recommended for houses is 100 microns 200 microns is used to protect glass from bomb blasts.

Thorne Camera Club

The social way of life is changing partly due by two years of covid lockdowns but also by the advance of 'group' communication technology such as 'Zoom' that are being developed and adopted by many people. Therefore clubs of all descriptions, especially camera clubs, have to adapt to this change and fully utilise the technology of the 'internet connectivity' to the clubs advantage and not succumb to totally rely on 'on line' meetings.

Our programme continued with a very informative 'Exhibition of Exceptional photography presented on DVD's by Sheila Haycock who demonstrated the use of all images which were not of her competition quality can be presented in AV form with excellent results.

The club's first speakers were David and Lynda Ulyett, the founders of our present club who gave a very interesting talk on 'Where do we go from here' providing food for thought on the progress of members on whether to stay within the clubs competitions or to expand to external competitions and salons.

The DVD presentation by photography judge John Tinsley, in which he explored the problems facing judges when assessing competition images. This was put to test when members judged the 'Open' print competition. The results were interesting but not definitive. However it was a good exercise with the top two images from Graham Linley with 'What goes Around Comes Around' and Terry Gunnill with 'Caister' and the second highest images from Colin Jarvis with 'Blue Hour' and Jacki Greenwood with 'Vinnie Pondering'.

Monty's Monthly Tip

There are many aspects involved in composing a good image and each one plays an important part in the process. Leading lines and framing are very useful in this process each both taking the viewer to the point of interest in the image. Other methods in composition include filling the frame with the subject or to the other extreme of negative space around the subject that help it stand out. The depth of field can also play a part in composition when the subject is set against a busy background, eg, a wide aperture will blur the background and enhance the subject. In photography there is no right or wrong way for anything providing that you create pleasing images for others and for yourself.

DONCASTER CANCER DETECTION TRUST

At the time of writing the sun was shining on a lovely group of snowdrops, a sure sign that Spring was on the way.

We are very pleased to report that we are in the process of buying equipment for the Jasmine Centre at DRI (breast cancer). It is a table and rack which will help the theatre staff during surgery and we have donated £6,250.

Also, as previously mentioned, we are buying another couch for the Urology Department. The price has slightly increased since last month and we will donate £13,667.

We now have a final figure for the money raised by Doncaster Wheatsheaf Singers along with the Hatfield and Askern Colliery Band at their annual Christmas concert at the Minster. The total came to £1,500 which included donations from the Minster Memory Tree (kindly provided by Doncaster Co-op Funeralcare). Our very grateful thanks once again to everyone involved.
