Community News 68th Hatfield Scout Group As part of Hatfield village contribution to the Keep Britain Tidy great Litter Pick weekend a small group of 68th Hatfield scout group went down Station Road on Sunday 5th March. It was a cold day but we set off armed with litter bags and picking sticks and starting at the scout hut walked down as far as the coop. The staff there were very pleased to see us tidying outside their shop and invited us in where we were given a bag of drinks, doughnuts and cookies. After working our way back up the other side of the road to the scout hut in the wind and rain, we cleaned our hands and enjoyed our well earned snack. Please try and keep our village tidy and take your litter home with you or use the bins provided in the street.
Hatfield Community Library I have just returned from the golden sands of Northumberland to the coloured sands of the library. Yes another free children’s activity in the library. This time making pictures from coloured sands. The activity was well booked but fortunately we had organised a morning session as well as the original afternoon session so over 80 children and carers enjoyed the experience. One of the best things, from our point of view, was the sight of children, who had finished their activity, sitting reading books. Next week’s Lego Robotics is also booked to capacity and will be as enjoyable as always. Activities at your library Monday, Rhyme Time, 10:30-11:15 (or as long as you want to stay in the library). Yoga, 6:458:15pm Tuesday, Art Class, 10:00-12:30, Yoga, 6:45-8:00pm , Readers’ group (last Tues of the month) 3:00-4:00pm. This is an earlier time as the library shuts at 4:00. We would like new members to join this small and friendly group. This month’s book is “The Song of Achilles” by Madeline Miller Wednesday, Chair Yoga, 3:00-4:00pm, Gentle Yoga, 4:30-6:00pm, Yoga, 6:30-8:00pm Friday, Readers’ Group (last Fri of the month) 10:30-12:30, Needles and Pins twice a month. 10:30-12:30. This is a friendly craft group which would welcome new members. NEW Quilting Sewing Group. 2:45-5pm Easter Egg raffle. The raffle raised £135 which will used to improve the Rhyme Time sessions. Summer Art Exhibition with a coffee morning will be held at the library on July 22nd. We hope you will support us. There will be a variety of stalls (including a cake stall!) and raffle. We also hope to have some games to entertain children (and adults). The Facebook site has been tougher to set up than anticipated so I am still resorting to ways of advertising which do not need technology (apart from a photocopier, a laminator and computer). Yes I know they are technology but at least ones I can deal with!! On this subject we have a new machine in the library which can (amongst many other things) enlarge small coloured pictures to A3. It can also be connected to a laptop. Finally, we have discovered that we do not have an atlas in the library after two people requested one. I hope we will be able to purchase one in the near future. For further information about activities Contact. Tel. 842064 E-mail hatfieldcommunitylibrary@gmail.com

Community News Hatfield Brass Band concert was a resounding success in St Lawrence Church on 31st March. A fabulous & varied selection of songs were performed from Phantom of the Opera to Lord of the Dance & a fantastic £701 was raised for the 'Friends', many thanks to Hatfield Mayor David Feinnes-Gregory for arranging the concert & to the band for sharing their talents with us. (Photo - the Band in St Lawrence Church). The Doncaster 1914-18, At Home, At War
project team Victoria & Vicky gave us a fascinating presentation of personal stories from family members of people who served in the Great War along with lots of interesting photographs. They also brought objects along like trench art made from shells, clothing & food items from the time. Members of the audience also brought their own photographs & momentos to discuss with Victoria & Vicky. After refreshments there was a good old fashioned sing song to tunes like It's a Long Way to Tiperary & Goodbyee & a few of us dressed up to see how it felt to be in the clothing of the time. £119 was added to the funds. (Photo's - Betty & Tom with a family invalided out certificate & John Brown in uniform!)
HATFIELD WOODHOUSE AMATEUR GARDENING SOCIETY On Saturday 18 March the Society held its Spring Show in the Club. This was an extremely successful Show, the number of entries being the largest fin Spring for some years. The trophy winners were: Bulb Cup - Pam Banks, Kitching Memorial Trophy (for 6 cut daffodils) - Denise Thornhill, Jubilee Trophy - Mel Reed for his Narcissi, Jean Lewis Trophy (Floral Art) - Mel Reed, Betty Colwill Trophy - Set Recipe) - Joan Brown, Cookery Cup - Marion Head, Dorrick Plate Joan Brown, and the Handicrafts Trophy - Brenda White. On Tuesday 4 April we were back to normal and welcomed Aaron Hickman from Askham Bryan Horticultural College as our guest speaker. In addition to his College work, Aaron speaks to clubs like ours, does garden design consultancy work, and occasionally appears on Radio Leeds. After a brief description of Askham Bryan, now and in the past, Aaron moved on to the main part of his presentation about Small Gardens. The general theme of his talk was that all plants, shrubs and trees used should earn their keep e.g. they should have a long flowering season, or a shorter flowering season followed by a colourful leaf display. For winter interest he mentioned shrubs which have red or yellowish stems. Containers were given a big rating because they can be moved about to instantly make new designs, and/or used to replace a perennial which has died back. He said that containers are useful for trees in small gardens because the restriction of the root slows down tree growth. He prefers not to increase the size of the container as a tree/shrub grows, but to lift the plant out annually, knock away as much of the old compost as possible, trim off dead roots and re-plant in the original container using new compost. This was another presentation which was thoroughly enjoyed by the audience. On Tuesday 2 May we will once again welcome Stella Exley who will be talking about “The Ups and Downs of Exhibiting”. Stella is a Camassia specialist who runs Hare Spring Cottage Plants Nursery near Barnsley and houses the National Collection of Camassias. As usual we will be starting at 730pm at Hatfield Woodhouse Club. Everybody, members and non members are welcome. There will be a small charge of £2 for non members.

Reaching Out at Thorne Camera Club At Thorne Camera Club visitors and new members are always welcome, and this invitation extends beyond the borders of Thorne and Moorends, as a number of members have found. The location of members is like ripples on a pond, constantly spreading to surrounding areas. At the present time, members travel from Hatfield, Dunsville and Stainforth, Scawthorpe, Arksey , Sprotborough, Askern and Howden and maybe other places as well. It is unimportant where you start from, it’s where you end up that counts. Some members have tried other clubs and found them not quite suitable for their needs, although at Thorne all abilities and interests are accommodated where possible, and some members are in more than one club, so great is their interest in improving their photography. The programmes, three per year, are meant to support and inspire, to encourage members to learn, and to grow as individuals. Ladies and gents, young and old, are all welcome at the club. The range of cameras used is as varied as the members, from pocket sized compacts to big DSLRs with multiple lenses, and even the Smartphone is encouraged. Malcolm Sales ASWPP visited the club recently to demonstrate the art of Smartphone photography. Some phones have as many megapixels as a DSLR and are capable of excellent results. Many of the members who only use their phones for talking, ( fancy that! ) were inspired to try smartphone photography for themselves after seeing what Malcolm had done. Whatever camera ( or phone ) you use, this is the time of year to get out there and take photos. Thorne Camera Club members will be doing just that. As May draws to a close the Summer Programme begins, consisting of outings to various places to enjoy a day out in good company, and take photos with plenty of advice and help on hand. Then, come September 18th when the new Autumn programme begins, with meetings in Thorne Methodist Church Hall, Mondays at 7.15pm, everyone will have some great images to share with one another. If you are interested in the Camera Club, contact David on 07463821182 or email thornecameraclub@yahoo.co.uk. Or just turn up at a meeting, you’ll be made very welcome.

Friends Of Jubilee Park Hatfield The Friends of Jubilee Park volunteer group has been set up to work with the owners of Jubilee Park, Hatfield Town Council, to maintain and improve the facilities of the park for all members of the public, young or old, fit and not so fit. The park, Cuckoo Lane, Hatfield, is well used by walkers, dog owners, skateboarders and footballers as well as families seeking fresh air in a rural setting and with children using the play equipment. The friends have already carried out a litter pick and gathered 3 black bags of rubbish and have been out planting bulbs and saplings. A Public Consultation Exercise is now under way to find out the likes and dislikes of the park users and seeking suggestions for improvements and future use. Forms and a postbox are to be found in the Hatfield Library. Financial restrictions on public spending means there is an urgent need for volunteer groups to add to the basic grass-cutting routines of most public parks. Unlike many other parks, such as Quarry Park Dunsville, Jubilee Park is not owned by Doncaster MBC, but by Hatfield Town Council. Anyone interested in joining the group or lending a helping hand can leave a note in the library postbox. Group Secretary, Dave Ketteridge says “Development of the park has stood still for too long. There is a huge potential for new projects. We are applying for grants and talking to people like the RSPB for ways to enhance wildlife and make it a better place to visit. From our ongoing consultation exercise it is already clear that the Number One Hate is people who don’t clear up after their dogs. Even stranger are those dog walkers that bag the dog mess and hang it on a branch. This is a national problem but we want dogowners to realise how awful it isto bring your kids to the park for a nice day out, only for it to be spoiled by dog mess” Group Chairman is Hatfield Cllr Duncan Anderson.
