Community News HATFIELD WOODHOUSE AMATEUR GARDENING SOCIETY Just after Easter we had our April Meeting on Tuesday 3 April. This was held at our usual venue, Hatfield Woodhouse Club and our Speaker was Christine Johnson who told us about “The Wonderful Life of the Honeybee”. Christine locates her hives for most of the year in the woods near Wentworth Woodhouse, and in Summer and Autumn they are on heather moors in the lower Pennines. Christine had a brought a miniature hive (no bees) and showed us how it was constructed in sections and what activities took place in each part. She told us about what were the functions of the different bees in the hive ie the queen, the drones and the workers. After hatching, worker bees spend about two weeks in the hive on tending and cleaning duties before flying out to collect pollen. If a particularly rich source of pollen is found, an individual bee will perform a ‘waggle dance’ to inform its colleagues of the location of the source. Each bee will make about one twelfth of its weight of honey in its short lifetime, which makes one realise how many bees there are in each hive, considering the amount of honey which is obtained. We thoroughly enjoyed this entertaining talk, illustrated by a range if photographs which were passed around the audience. Honey was on sale as well. The Society held its Spring Show on Saturday 17 March. Considering the horrible weather in the run up to the Show we had a very good turn out of exhibits and also there was an excellent attendance on the day. The Trophy Winners were: Mel Reed (Bulb Cup); Joan Brown (Kitchen Memorial Trophy for Daffodils); Pam Banks (Jubilee Trophy for best exhibit in bulbs and plants classes); Val Geoghegan (Jean Lewis Trophy for Floral Art); Marion Head (Produce Cup): Margaret Conway (Betty Colwill Trophy for Set Recipe); Marion Head (Dorrick Plate for best entry in Produce Classes) and Pam Banks (Handicrafts). The next meeting of the Club will be on Tuesday 1 May when we will be holding a Plant Sale. Members and guests are invited to bring any spare plants which they have to sell on the night. As usual, we will be meeting in Hatfield Woodhouse Club and starting at 7-30pm. Everybody, members and guests are welcome.

Hatfield Community Library I need to start with an apology to those of you looking forward to our author events. Unfortunately, they were cancelled due to circumstances beyond our control. However, the good news is that our author talks will be resumed in the future. The Easter events were enjoyed immensely by those who attended them. Apparently we had visitors from Australia at the Lego Robotics. They were very impressed with the event and the fact that it was free to attend. Most of our events are free especially for children. We can do this because any money we raise is put into the library for events or to improve the library. Some money is from donations, some from the books the public donate and some from funding applications. Our next event is the Drama Evening on Saturday April 28th at 7pm. Actors from CAST will perform a variety of scenes from Chaucer to Victoria Wood entitled” The British in Love.” There will be a charge of £5 per ticket. Refreshments will be provided. The children’s non-fiction books have been sorted into smaller categories to make it easier for children to find the books in which they are interested. We have some which will be useful for school topics eg Romans, Victorians, First and Second World War, Space, Mini-beasts. The books also provide information about pets, hobbies etc. There are also some simpler non- fiction books near the fiction books to encourage children to read a variety of subjects. If any adult is interested in volunteering at the library, please contact us with your details. The library is a rewarding place to work but does need commitment from volunteers to allow it to provide a good and reliable service. The work is suitable for a wide range of adult ages, especially if you are retired, part-time workers or work at home. The Hatfield Local and Natural History Group will be holding some talks in the library on Mondays at 2pm. Everyone is welcome to come, although there will be a small charge for nonmembers. Community News Jordan’s Junior Journos launch new magazine at Travis St Lawrence Last month it was wanabee politicians, this month Travis St Lawrence released the Travis Times. A magazine produced purely by children in the school under the supervision of Travis’ new top notch apprentice Jordan Courtney. If Travis’ Year 6 children, Cameron and Jasmine are producing articles of this quality, the Arrow better snap them up quickly! Here’s what the Travis St Lawrence junior journos wrote about the Easter Service. The service was held at church and was hosted by Year 5 children and took place at 9:15am. Parents were welcome to see their children and others, photos containing other children were not allowed to be posted on any social media. The service consisted of the entire Easter story acted out by Year 5 pupils and the rest of the school singing hymns related to the event. Firstly, the year 5 students welcomed everybody and then proceeded to inform the rest of the school that they had been studying the Easter service. Next, they began the service, acting out Jesus entering Jerusalem on a humble donkey and civilians waving palm leaves ‘enthusiastically’. The rest of the school then sang – and some parents - ‘Give Me Joy In My Heart’ and received great applause from the spectators. After the hymns, they resumed in telling the story where Jesus was betrayed by Judas, put on the cross and resurrected. After this, Reverend Liz stated a few kind words about one of the many great services performed by the school.
Travis St. Lawrence’s new Chair of Governors Scoops Top Award from HRH The Princess Royal Travis St Lawrence School in Hatfield is going places under a new top notch Leadership Team. In the last few months alone, transformation is aplenty, with elections and the opening of the Pupil Parliament, the call for budding, young journalists for the launch of the in-house paper headed up by apprentice Jordan Courtney, an American inspired inter-department decoration competition and the start of a refurbishment programme that will see a new modern library, conveniences and safety features. It’s perhaps not a surprise when you see just a few of the credentials of that new Senior Team running the school. At a prestigious awards event on Thursday night in London’s Guildhall, the recently appointed Chair of Governor’s, Lee Pitcher saw his team of the last three years, SafeMove scoop the top award to become the British Quality Foundation’s overall UK’s Excellence Award winners 2018, one of the highest accolades any organisation in the UK can achieve. The award was presented by the foundation’s patron, HRH The Princess Royal, Princess Ann at the event hosted by the face of premier league and FA Cup football on Sky TV, Jake Humphrey. Lee Pitcher, whose two children and niece attend Travis St Lawrence, hopes to bring his learning from the business world to build on the success of this wonderful Church of England school based in historic village to the North of Doncaster. Carolyn Buckley has recently returned to her Doncaster roots, having worked for 7 years as deputy in a Rotherham school. Whilst in Rotherham, she worked alongside an inspirational head teacher, moving the school from special measures to good. She is passionate about improving education and brings with her enthusiasm and full commitment. The new Head Teacher and local Mrs Buckley and Mr. Pitcher are working closely to bring their ambitious aspiration to ‘go beyond outstanding’ to life over the next few years. “Travis St Lawrence is already an Ofsted ‘good’ school but this isn’t enough for our wonderful community, colleagues and children. We want to give them the best of the best and will strive to do so.” said Mr. Pitcher. Travis St Lawrence certainly seems the place to be right now.

Hatfield Woodhouse Primary School By: Maisie, Lloyd, Byron and Lydia Hello, welcome back to Hatfield Woodhouse Primary. We have all been working very hard on all our work and have progressed with the help of our brilliant teachers. Here are some things that have been going on in our superb, special school… Easter Journey On Wednesday, KS2 took part in an Easter trail, which was performed by Mrs Gardener and some lovely helpers .The first section was Palm Sunday were we all had to wave palm leaves and shout Hail the king and Hosanna. Then we had to write on them one thing that we hope for in the world. After, we went to the last supper were we saw bread for his body and wine for his blood .Then we got a napkin and wet our hand and printed it on to the napkin. Next, we went to the Garden Of Gethsemane were we learnt all about how Jesus was arrested by the guards. Later, we went to Jesus’ crucifixion and two men explained what happened during hanging. Finally, we went to Jesus’ tomb where we were told about how Jesus rose and what happened after. This was a fun and interesting activity and we all enjoyed it lots! Sport relief For Sport relief our school did a sponsored speed bounce and we raised a total of £502. Each class came dressed in their P.E kits ready for the challenge ahead of them. The whole school had been preparing for this event and have been working their socks off. We all enjoyed it and was very sucsessful. This all happened because of our wonderful P.E teacher Mr Nichols and Mr Alderson organised it for us. Y4 Archbishop of York As part of the Archbishop of York award, Y4 collected Easter eggs and donated them to the elderly and the children patients at the Doncaster hospital. They were very happily received! The whole school donated lots of eggs for the cause and they were very appreciative. Timestable Rockstars The whole school have been working really hard on times tables. We are using Timestables Rockstars online to help us with this! We have been competing against ourselves and each other. We are really enjoying learning our times tables.

Thorne Camera Club
After the snow, bitter winds and freezing temperatures of “The Beast From The East” , it is pleasing to report that our guest speaker for April, Oliver Wright, who has spent the last six months in Sweden and Finland, has made it safely back. On 23rd April he will be presenting some of his fantastic photos and talking about his chilling experiences in the frozen North, with ice sculptures, Northern Lights and wildlife, among other things. Visitors are welcome to come to the Methodist Church Hall at 7.15pm, £3.00pp admission. Last month, we had an entertaining visit from Jim Price FRPS AFIAP DPAGB. He gave a presentation entitled ‘ Every Picture Tells a Story’ describing his own distinctive way of taking pictures, getting the composition right and the techniques he uses. In the Sheffield Photographic Society Annual Knock-out Competition, with 23 clubs participating, Thorne managed a respectable 16th place against some top class and long established clubs from around the region. Members also enjoyed a tutorial night in which various photographic techniques and information were exchanged and discussed by members, allowing less experienced members to learn more and improve their skills. Also a number of members managed to visit. The Photography Show at Birmingham NEC. It was a chance to view some of the latest equipment from major manufacturers and check out some supplementary items, such as paper, printers, lighting and filters. It was a long trip from Thorne but well worth it. This month’s competition, theme – Friendship, was held, also with an Open section. David Neve, professional photographer from Brigg, judged on this occasion the dpi or digitally projected images. The results were as follows: Themed section: i.e. “Friendship” 1st “Let’s Swim” by Mark Harrison. 2nd “Hanging with Friends” by John Marshall 3rd “Man’s Best Friend” by Mel Brown In the open section the results were: 1st ‘Branches Reflected’ by Julia Jackson 2nd “If Looks Could Kill” by Mel Brown” and jointly “Winter Sun” by Terry Gunnill and ‘Free Range Chickens’ by Colin Jarvis 3rd “Goth Girl at Whitby” by David Ulyett and also “Study in Light” by Bill Mitchell. Members Commended were Terry Gunnill, Graham Linley, Mel Brown, June Horbury, Norman Pugh, John Marshall (2), David Ulyett (2), Lynda Ulyett (2), Mark Harrison, Jackie Woodward, and Colin Jarvis. The 5th Annual General Meeting of Thorne Camera Club is being held on 16th April. Nominations for positions of officers have been notified to the membership. It is worth emphasising that it is an opportunity for those wishing to contribute to the running of the club to put their names forward. Very soon the Summer Programme will be under way, with various photographic outings organised for members. If you are interested in joining please contact David thornecameraclub@yahoo.co.uk

Volunteers Plant Out 250 Trees in Hatfield’s Jubilee Park Public-spirited volunteers from the Rotary Club of Doncaster and Friends of Jubilee Park Hatfield turned out in force with spades and watering cans to plant out 250 saplings on the park boundaries, with some 20 varieties of trees and shrubs established to add beauty and variety to this popular walking and play area. Thanks to some smart preplanning, the job done in less than ninety minutes, with time for a chat at the coffee and soup station manned by Rotarians. Organiser Peter Wyatt commented: ”This is an ideal project for Rotary groups to put their funds and effort into as it benefits everyone and encourages community involvement.” Tree species include oak, alder, birch, hornbeam, rowan, cherry, maple, hazel, crab apple, willow, blackthorn, rose, dogwood and beech. The Nature Conservancy calculates that, in terms of carbon offset, planting seven trees would trap enough carbon to compensate for one person travelling to, say, Alicante and back, and put oxygen back into the atmosphere. The Rotary Club of Doncaster has already arranged tree-trimming weekends and brought in contractors to dig a defensive ditch to deter late-night incursions by quad bikes and 4x4 vehicles. Hatfield Town Council have promised to install pedestrian-only entries at a number of points, although motorcycle riders are still a problem. Friends of Jubilee Park continue to clear litter from the park on a daily basis and have planted out daffodils and snowdrops. Wildflower seeds mixes to benefit, bees butterflies and birds are to be sown on the 150 yards of earth bunds created by the earlier ditch digging exercise. Friends Secretary Dave Ketteridge says: ”I was amazed how everyone got stuck in and the job was complete in no time, with rabbits guards in place as well. It will take some time for everything to get established but we plan to feed them and keep them clear of weeds, so we get a better show earlier than previous plantings in the park “I urge everyone to put their litter in the bins. Plastic will last a thousand years and break down into micro-particles and end up in our lungs or on our dinner plate. People don’t realise how deathly it can be to wildlife. One survey found hundreds of dead mice and shrews in discarded cans and bottles. They clamber in for shelter or insects and can’t get out again because of the slippery sides, and drown or starve to death. We still have a problem with one or two individuals who don’t pick up after their dogs, coming at night when no-one can witness their nasty habits. Take a torch, mate, and a poo-bag and make everyone happy. We want to revitalise the park and make it a great place to visit. Dog-muck really puts people off bringing their kids to play.” We have our first request for a Memory Tree to be planted in the park. These need to be at least two metres high, with stake and ties. The great message we are getting all the time is just how much pleasure Jubilee Park has given people over the years.”
