Friends Of Quarry Park
We have had a very eventful March! Thank you to all the new faces at our Open Meeting on the 6th. It was lovely to meet you all and share what has been going on in the park. Our Work Party, on Friday 8th, kept our 5 volunteers and Dennis from the Council busy taking down some head height branches down to open up the areas underneath the trees. This helps more light reach the ground layer and helps more plants to grow underneath; such as the Bluebells and Snowdrops that were planted last October as well as creating a nice line of sight through the trees. Saturday 23rd March was our Keep Britain Tidy litter pick. We can’t wait to update you about what happened! Our next Work Party day will be on Friday 5th April and we meet at 10am at the Green Flag pole. Everybody is welcome and equipment and refreshments are provided. We hope to see you there! If you would like to be included on our mailing list about workdays and other activities that are going on in Quarry Park, please email thequarrypark@gmail.com Find us on Facebook @FriendsOfQuarryPark or contact us on thequarrypark@gmail.com

Community News HATFIELD WOODHOUSE AMATEUR GARDENING SOCIETY March 16 brought the Annual Spring Show to Hatfield Woodhouse Club. There were more entries and entrants than there had been for many year’s at a Spring Show, which made the tables look splendid when all the entries were laid out. Trophy Winners this year were: Bulb Cup - Mel Reed; Kitching Memorial Trophy - Maria Brack; Jubilee Trophy - Maria Brack; Jean Lewis Trophy - Julia Jackson; Produce Cup Marion Head; Betty Colwill trophy - Margaret Conway; Dorrick Plate - Margaret Conway; Handicrafts Cup - Brenda White. On 2 April our Speaker was Liz Webster from Garden Blooms Nursery at Fishlake (gardenblooms.co.uk). Liz’s presentation was about “Pests and Diseases” in the garden. As well as a description of these problems in the garden, Liz offered solutions to them, trying not to use chemicals as control agents. She offered many common sense solutions which might not completely eradicate a problem, but which would keep them under control. After the presentation, the audience was able to buy plants from a selection which Liz had brought along. On May 7 we will be having a Plant Sale. Members and guests are invited to bring their spare plants for sale on the night with proceeds going to club funds. As usual we will meet at Hatfield Woodhouse Club commencing at 7-30pm. Hatfield Woodhouse Primary School As it is the Easter holidays, this month’s article is from Helen Acton, principal, because for some reason, our children-journalists weren’t keen to come into school to meet the deadline! Just a few of the events and activities occurring at Hatfield Woodhouse Primary School this month …… Tooth Brushing Club Did you know that almost a third of 5-year-olds in Doncaster have tooth decay? For that reason, Hatfield Woodhouse Primary School are working in partnership with Doncaster Council Public Health to improve the oral health of the children in our school. We initiated tooth brushing club in 2017 for children in Foundation Stage and KS1, which trained school staff lead daily after lunch. The tooth brushing club aims to teach the children how to brush their teeth and look after their mouths. The children are extremely enthusiastic about tooth brushing club and enjoy the daily sessions as they brush along to some jolly backing music. We have seen a vast improvement in the children’s attitude to oral hygiene and their willingness to keep their teeth clean. Wear Green Day Whenever we initiate fund-raising for a charity I am astonished how well our children and parents respond. Our Year 4 children are currently studying for their ‘Young Leaders Award’ and as part of their whole class project to ‘Make a Difference’, they chose to fund-raise for the Children’s Air Ambulance. There are only two Children’s Air Ambulances in the whole country and one of them flies from Doncaster Airport. What makes them distinct from a normal air ambulance is not only the smaller equipment they carry, – suitable for very ill small children and babies, but also the fact that they have a spare seat so a parent can accompany their child. Year 4 initiated a Bake sale and a Wear Green Day (the Doncaster ambulance is green) and made an incredible £619! Easter Show Year 3 and 4 parents were delighted to come into school to watch the Easter show this year. Through song and dialogue, the children told the story of ‘The Three Trees’. The first tree wanted to hold treasure and when it was cut down it became the manger holding baby Jesus. The next tree wanted to be strong and powerful. It became the boat from which Jesus calmed the storm. The final tree wanted to stand on a hillside and point to heaven. That tree became the cross. A fabulous way of sharing the Easter story! Well done Years 3 and 4! Finally On Saturday 18th May the PTA have organised Ben Smart’s circus to come onto our school field. A performance will take place at 2:00pm. Tickets are £7.50 and available from the school office. Do come and join us!

Crowle Rescue Day gives close up access to 999 teams
Rescue Day, the emergency services day held annually at 7 Lakes Country Park in Crowle near Scunthorpe, promises yet again to be an action packed event for all the family promoting the work of our 999 and rescue services. This year’s event is being held on Saturday 13th July and planning is already in the advanced stages for what promises to be another day of high octane displays on land, in the water and in the air. Organisers are putting together a full day’s schedule of live emergency and rescue displays with East Midlands Ambulance Service, Humberside Police and Humberside Fire & Rescue Service at the centre of the action, along with many more emergency, rescue and support teams involved. The crew behind running this popular event include many serving local emergency service staff, who come together each year to volunteer and make Rescue Day happen. One of the organising team, Martyn Johnson said: “Our constant aim is to run an event that lets the public get up close and see the great work that our 999 and support services do and how they deal with incidents, as well as the vehicles and equipment they use, which we hope generates a greater appreciation and understanding. We also use the day to give road, rail, water and fire safety tips to help keep our communities safer and we wrap it all up in a fun day that appeals to all of the family.” Regular Rescue Day favourites the Red Devils Parachute Display team will be appearing, along with fire, police, ambulance and water rescue teams who will be performing a range of exciting displays and demonstrations in the idyllic setting of 7 Lakes Country Park. Visitors will be able to meet crews and rescue dogs, see helicopters and take part and interact with the many different teams that will be attending the day. Advanced tickets can be purchased online from www.rescueday999.com from May onwards, or pay on the gate on the day. Follow Rescue Day on social media Twitter: @Rescue_Day or www.facebook.com/rescudedayuk for the latest information.
South Yorkshire Police Male Voice Choir
In October 1925 the Doncaster County Borough Police formed a Male Voice Choir to perform at the Doncaster Grand Theatre in order to raise money to buy boots for the less well off children in the Borough. Over time the choir's name changed due to force amalgamations and today the choir is known as The South Yorkshire Police Male Voice Choir, probably the oldest police male voice choir in the uk (94 yrs) with the same charitable ethos. Many concerts both home and abroad have been performed in front of many people and on Saturday 1st June 2019 at Hall Cross Lower Academy School at 7pm the choir will be in concert with guests The Doncaster Youth Swing Orchestra, compare is BBC Look North Presenter Phil Bodmer. Tickets are £10 to include interval refreshments and are available by phoning 01302 539284. Donations from a share of the proceeds are to be made to the Doncaster Cancer Detection Trust and DonMentia, the local Dementia charity group. New members are always sought. Further details on membership can be found at www.sypmvc.org.uk or contacting the choirs secretary on 01302 390579 or email malc@malbee.plus.com

Discover Doncaster’s heritage at this year’s Doncaster Heritage Festival, Saturday 4 – Sunday 19 May 2019. The 2019 Doncaster Heritage Festival will be launched on Saturday with two fascinating talks – Helen Cox asking the question who was the rightful king, Edward IV or Richard III? And TV historian, Michael Wood, talks about Doncaster’s connection to the decisive Battle of Brunanburh in AD 937, which triggered the making of a united England. Other Doncaster-focussed highlights of the festival, include ‘An audience with Brian Blessed’, Doncaster’s heritage ambassador comes home to CAST recalling growing up here and filming ‘Who Do You Think You Are?’ at Doncaster Archives. In 2017 Heritage Doncaster purchased the Conisbrough Court Rolls, 1265-1935, and we have two full days of related events including a number of talks about how you can get involved with the HLF funded project, an insight into the Manor courts and their evolution through time, entertainment from the Doncaster Waites and many free events are being held throughout Conisbrough and Denaby Main. Doncaster Market Place sees the start of the 2019 Tour de Yorkshire and to celebrate Doncaster’s cycling history, local broadcaster and author, Chris Sidwells talks about Doncaster’s cycling legends including Tom Simpson, a local lad who was the first Englishman to wear the yellow jersey. The festival has an exciting programme made up of a series of enthralling talks, workshops, walks and events that explore the history of the borough and beyond. Events will be at a variety of different venues and location from morning to evening, so why not discover something new? SAND HOUSE ROCKS UP AT DONCASTER HERITAGE FESTIVAL The unique former Victorian marvel known as the Sand House will be one part of Doncaster’s history to feature in the town’s Heritage Festival, running from Saturday 4 May until Sunday 19 May. Events planned by The Sand House Charity for Doncaster Heritage Festival will tell the story of this remarkable feature of the town’s past. They include guided walks on the 6 and 19 May and a poetry writing workshop on the 16 May, led by eminent local poet, Ian Parks. The most ambitious of this year’s Sand House events is “Sand House Rocks!” It takes place in collaboration with Doncaster Youth Jazz Association. Using images, audio recordings, video, live music and the spoken word, it evokes the spirit of the community concerts that were held at the Sand House in the late nineteenth century. “Sand House Rocks!” takes place at St James’ Church, St Sepulchre Gate West, Doncaster on Saturday 18 May at 3pm. Tickets are £8 (£6 for under-16s) Speaking about “Sand House Rocks!” Chairman of Trustees of The Sand House Charity, Richard Bell, said “We held a similar event last year and received wonderful feedback. The involvement of Doncaster Youth Swing Orchestra brings a whole new dimension to what is already a fascinating story from the town’s past”. John Ellis MBE, Director of Doncaster Youth Jazz Association added “Last years "Sand House Rocks!" was a fascinating insight into this unique home of sand and rock, via wonderful pictorial evidence and the vivid memories of Doncastrians of that time. We are indeed honoured to be part of this inspired project”. Both the guided walks and the poetry writing workshop must be pre-booked, by contacting Doncaster Central Library Local Studies on 01302-734307 or by email to central.localhistory@doncaster.gov.uk. Tickets for “Sand House Rocks!” are available from the same source and on the door on Saturday 18 May. Further details of all these events can be found at www.thesandhouse.org.uk/events.

Thorne Camera Club Members at the Camera Club have enjoyed welcoming several speakers of late, from near and far. From Huddersfield came Chris Hodgson, with a presentation entitled ‘Fun with Topaz and Nik Filters’. In it she showed images using these pieces of software to enhance her photographs. She is particularly interested in Impressionism, using the software to give a painterly feel. Chris spent some time actually working through some of her images, showing different stages of transformation in real time, which was enlightening and educational. One member immediately downloaded Nik Filters to try them, several members already use Topaz. However, for some it was all a mystery which will be addressed at a later date. On Members’ Nights, as it suggests, it is all about members and their work. Some members share their knowledge or interest via presentations, and this time three members came forward. The first was about lenses, particularly that old favourite the 50mm prime lens, very much in use before the introduction of zoom lenses. The pros and cons of this were discussed, the quality against the lack of versatility, for example. A challenge was laid before members, to take photos with a 50mm prime lens and present them to the club in the Autumn. Continuing the lenses theme, use of filters on lenses, what they are, how they work, and what they do was discussed. A UV filter permanently fitted, cuts through haze for a clearer picture, but a secondary use is protection. One member, after dropping his camera, lens down, expecting the worst, said only the filter was damaged, and cheaply replaced compared to the cost of a new lens. To finish the evening, consideration was given to the rights of a photgrapher in public places. It is reassuring to know that anyone can take any photograph in a public place, there is no law to stop them, but some consideration must be given to the reaction of others, and how to deal with the public who may not be aware of the law. During the next few weeks, there will be no meetings on Bank Holidays, otherwise there are competitions and a visiting speaker before the summer break. In the summer, as well as outings to places of interest, a Summer School will run for the benefit of anyone wanting to learn how to use their camera. This will be locally based and a small charge will be involved, but experienced photographers will be on hand to give help and advice. Contact David on 07463821182 to sign up. Places are limited.
