Please mention “The Arrow” when responding to advertisements

Welcome to the May 2022 issue of the Hatfield Arrow.

Please remember to mention the Hatfield Arrow wherever you use the local businesses that advertise. The Hatfield Arrow relies heavily on the support of the local businesses advertising their goods or services. Without them it would not be possible every month. Also, remember that we have a business directory listing at the back of the magazine. If you are looking for a local tradesman, electrician, builder, etc, you should find what you are looking for, if not throughout the magazine then hopefully in the business directory. Look out for the new additions each month. Best Wishes Julie Morrell Tel: 07854 880882 Julie@arrowpublications.co.uk www.arrowpublications.co.uk Find us on facebook

Firstly, we had a stall at Hatfield Community Library’s Community Coffee Morning in early Feb where we took £ 61.00. Then we were at the St Lawrence Church Spring Fayre in March & made £107.70 in sales & then we attended Hatfield Woodhouse Methodist Chapel’s Easter Coffee Morning in April & sold another £25.50 worth! We’ve also done well with our easyfundraising, where online shoppers get free donations for shopping from their armchairs if they’ve nominated FoHCBT as their preferred charity, raising £22.98 for us in Jan & we received £33.50 from Recycling for Good Causes where we send all our scrap jewellery, old mobile phones & used stamps. Thanks to all our supporters who donate & buy our jewellery & to the online shoppers, it all helps our aim of raising funds to repair & maintain the beautiful Church of St Lawrence building in Hatfield.

THORNE CAMERA CLUB

It is with sadness to announce that a founder member of Thorne Camera Club, John Hookway suffering for some years with Alzheimer's passed away recently. His interest in Photography began when he was given a digital camera, and he soon became an important and active member o the club. From the first meeting, John was willing to record by digital image or video many varied activities of members at meetings, photoshoots and outings. He came to the club an enthusiastic beginner, and progressed to winning both club and external competitions, encouraging other members to take part. Doreen, his wife was also a member before John became too ill to attend. Our condolences go to her and their family, they will be in all our thoughts. John, you will be greatly missed. The club held a second 'Open Print' competition and invited Christine Hatley to judge the entries. The members provided an excellent range of subjects for Christine to judge which she did giving a detailed critique for each entry. Christine's final choice of the competition entries were 1st Colin Jarvis with 'SPURN HEAD' 2nd Graham Linley with 'HIGH & DRY' and 3rd Graham Linley with 'BUMPER BUMPER'. Highly Commended entries were Bill Mitchell (3) Anne-Louise Allen (2) Bob Allen, Colin Jarvis and Terry Gunnill. Commended entries were Anne-Louise Allen (2), Bob Allen (2), Patricia Woodward, Colin Jarvis and Trevor Holt. All of the entries of the print competition will form the clubs first exhibition of the year to be held on the 23rd April 2022 at The Methodist Church Hall in combination with the Church's 'Coffee Morning' held between 10.00am and 12.00. All are welcome to enjoy a cup of coffee or tea with a cake after the Saturday morning shop and brows through a fine election of photographs. Good news for our chairman Terry Gunnill, he has had acceptance from the Clay Cross Salon for a photograph 'Golden Light'. The Salon is an 'Online event and Terry gained his acceptance out of 5500 other entrants. Well Done Terry! Let us all extend our photographic outlook and follow Terry's lead. We welcome any of the readers of our column interested in photography of whatever experience to join us on Monday evenings at 7.15 pm at the Methodist Chapel Hall. For more information please email Terry at cameraclubthorne@gmail.com MONTY'S MONTHLY TIP When photographing spring flowers chose a calm and overcast but reasonably bright day to get soft defused light. Try Aperture Priority with a setting of f/8 to keep the subject sharp but blur the background. Experiment with a wider aperture for less depth of field and ISO settings to suit your requirements.

The Friends of Quarry Park

This month’s work party took place on Saturday 2nd April to incorporate the Keep Britain Tidy ‘Great British Spring Clean’. The litter pickers assembled at the Green Flag, we had 10 volunteers and a mini recruit, along with 2 Rangers from DMBC. We worked in pairs so no one went picking alone, and were assigned specific sites around the Park to ensure there was no duplicating of areas. A great job was done by all, and there were 11 bags of litter collected. Some areas were worse than others but on the whole there was less rubbish than in previous years. The park is looking very clean and tidy now! Refreshments were served at the end, a welcome hot drink on a bright but cold morning. A huge thank you to everyone who took part in this very important activity. We are hoping to regain our Green Flag status and this will go a long way to helping us secure this. The DMBC Orienteering Course is now ready. If you would like to participate, please visit the Park and check out the details and instructions that will be placed in the Notice boards, one in the car park and the other is near the Post Office. Work parties are usually held on the first Friday of each month, weather permitting. There is. always plenty of work to be done,

from litter picking, clearing paths and cutting back vegetation. Equipment is provided but please ensure you wear suitable clothing and footwear. The next event is scheduled for Friday 6th May at 10am – 12 noon, meet at the Green Flag. Full details will be published on our Facebook page ‘Friends of Quarry Park’ or you can email us at thequarrypark@gmail.com or call us on 07546 595144

DONCASTER-BORN CLASSICAL PIANIST PATRON TO NATIONAL ARTS CHARITY

APPOINTED

A Doncaster-born Classical pianist has been appointed as Patron to the National Youth Arts Trust, a charity which helps to support talented young people aged 12–25 from nonprivileged backgrounds. Matthew Schellhorn, an acclaimed concert pianist born in 1977 who grew up in Hatfield, has been a leading performer for over twenty years, he regularly appears at major venues and festivals throughout the UK and has recorded numerous critically acclaimed albums. The National Youth Arts Trusts has inspirational Patrons drawn from theatre, television, film, music, dance and politics who recognise the need for the charity and who help in a variety of ways. Their list includes actors Hugh Bonneville, Sir Derek Jacobi and Ewan McGregor, Labour Shadow Cabinet Member of Parliament David Lammy, and impressionist Alistair McGowan. Speaking about his appointment, Matthew Schellhorn said: “Studying music demands resources that many talented young learners do not have. My own career as a pianist began in unlikely 1980s poverty-stricken South Yorkshire, when, after numerous local performances in talent shows and care home visits, community figures helped me overcome constraints to undertake higher-quality study than I formerly had access to. I am a passionate believer in widening access to ensure art, and particularly music, can be for all. At a time when opportunities in music are so chronically under-resourced, the work of the National Youth Arts Trust, of which I am delighted to be Patron, is more imperative than ever.” Ruth O’Brien, Director of Operations for the National Youth Arts Trust, said: “We are so excited to have Matthew Schellhorn join our list of inspiration Patrons. We are very grateful for his efforts in helping to spread the word of the National Youth Arts Trust and our work in widening access to the arts. We thank him for his ongoing support of our work.” Matthew says he enjoys lending his professional profile to several charitable causes, including endorsing social projects, offering support to educational and cultural initiatives, and giving fundraising recitals. Now living in London, he still maintains strong links with his place of birth, as Patron of Doncaster’s The Sand House Charity which runs educational activities and projects that have a link to the unique house, carved from solid rock, that once stood in the St James Street neighbourhood. During the Covid-19 lockdowns, The Sand House Charity delivered numerous card model kits to Travis St Lawrence CE Primary School, in order to engage them in an educational project. Commenting on the work carried out by children at his former school, Matthew Schellhorn said, “It is wonderful to know that the pupils of my primary school, which I loved attending, have had this amazing opportunity. I am delighted that they enjoyed making the kits and learning about Doncaster’s astounding history”.

Hatfield Community Library Easter Events. - We ran three events during the Easter holidays as the Easter break in the middle of the holiday used up some of the time. It is also a popular time for people to go on holiday. One activity was two sessions of an old favourite “Lego Robotics” and the other a completely new activity Dib Dab Sparkles and Marvellous Masks. All our activities are free thanks to grants and funding from various organisations. The Easter Raffle will run up to Easter. We would like to thank Tesco Express and the Co-op for generously donating the eggs for the raffle. As I have mentioned several times, we have not yet persuaded anyone to run our pre-school sessions. However, we have secured funding from Sport England to run 7 WEA sessions on the following dates. All sessions will be free and refreshments will be provided. We were unable to get the same days for all the sessions but hopefully this will not cause too much hassle for those who would like to come. The activities will be similar to our previous Rhyme Time sessions. Hopefully the times are compatible with school drop off and pick up time. Tuesday April 26th 1:15-2:45 Tuesday May 3rd 1:15-2:45 Monday May 9th 9:45-11:15 Monday May 16th 9:45-11:45 rd th 9:45-11:45 Monday May 30 9:45-11:15 Monday May 23 Monday June 6th 9:45-11:45 Here is the information which I have been able to find out about football in the past in our area. This was very early Hatfield Football club team picture but I do not have the date of the photo or the names of any team members. Any guesses? I think it pre-dates the next photo. Were shin pads worn over the socks? The second picture is of Hatfield Football Club in 1911-12. The only names given are for the goalkeeper Ernest Davison who was the blacksmith’s son and Mr Charles Sylvester who was the landlord of the Blue Bell (on he right in the back row). Nothing is mentioned about the club’s achievements. The third photo is of the Park Lane (now Dunsville) football team of 1938/39. This team played in the Kirk Sandall Minor League. They won the League Cup and were runners up in the league. Some of the names mentioned were Arthur Rickaby, Eddie Friar, Harold Hibble, Walter Hibble, George Thompson, Bernie Simms, Arthur Jones, ? Tich Shaw, John Davison. There were two surnames Tetley and Kendall. Perhaps some-one will know their Christian names. Football is still going strong in the DN7 area for adults and children at Hatfield Main Club Football Club and Dunscroft Warriors. (Apologies if I missed a football club) My grandson loves playing for his football team. It gives children the chance to learn a skill, be a team player and keep fit. Than you again to Ben Brown and Don McQuade for the information and photos. WEEKLY CLASSES MONDAY. Needles and Pins 10am. Bring your own work and chat with like minded people or ask for advice. Bridge 1pm for beginners and improvers. (free activity) TUESDAY. Games café 10:00-12:30 Join us in the library to play a variety of games including Mahjong. Refreshments are provided for the small charge of£1 (Free activity) Readers’ groups on the last Tuesday of the month 2-3:30 or the last Friday of the month at 10:30 We read a variety of books and most of us have read and enjoyed books which we might otherwise have passed over on the shelf. The latest one I have enjoyed was “Once Upon a RIver.” I would not have picked this book off the shelf but could not it down until I had finished. Books are provided by the library service. (Free activity ) Yoga 6:00-7:30pm. Gentle Hatha Yoga £6. This is available on Zoom if you would like to take part at home You will need to download Zoom then receive a link from the library to join the session. Jayne and the Library have paid this year’s subscription so that people who do not feel comfortable joining in a class at the library can still do yoga in their own home. WEDNESDAY Art Class 10:15-12:30 Tuition from an artist is available to help beginners and experienced artists. New members are welcome. You do not have be good at art to enjoy this class. A recent member had no art experience but is turning out some great pictures. (£6 a session) Yoga (gentle/chair yoga) 3:30-5pm £6 Thursdays and Fridays are when we have our Family History groups in. Unfortunately, these groups are all full. However, if you want to do your own family history research you can do this for free in the library using Ancestry and Find my Past. We can now access the 1921 census but only the Index as Find My Past are charging everyone to look at the Transcripts and this cannot be paid in the library. However, the Index does give some useful information. If you wish to contact the library Tel. 842064 email hatfieldcommunitylibrary@gmail.com
