The Society met for its usual monthly meeting on 4 October at Hatfield Woodhouse Club. Our Guest Speaker for the evening was Lee Plevey. Lee lives in Hatfield Woodhouse, and he and his brothers run their Garden Centre and associated business from Plevey’s Garden World at Chappel Drive in Doncaster.
Lee is one of our judges at the Society’s Spring and Autumn Shows, and his talk was about the recent Autumn Show. Lee judged the vegetable and fruit classes, and he went through the Show’s schedule, explaining how he came to his decisions for winner and places in each class. He told us what particular features he looked for as a judge, and took questions throughout his presentation, clarifying points he had made and expanding on related points as well. His overall judgement was that that although like many local shows this year the entry was relatively small, due mainly to the hot weather and lack of rain, the overall standard was very good. Lee encouraged everybody who grows vegetables and flowers to enter as many classes as they could, both at the Autumn and Spring Shows. This was a really excellent “wash up” for Show entrants, and thought provoking for people thinking about entries in future shows.
At the end Lee reminded everybody that 2023 is the last year in which peat based composts will be sold retail to the general public, and he said that alternative will be available. He had brought some wool based composts, and a bark based, one as examples of what is already available in the non peat line.
The Christmas Social event will be on Tuesday 6 December when there will be entertainment and a buffet supper. This is free to members and with a small charge to non members. The President will gathering names of people wishing to attend at the November meeting.
The November meeting will be the Annual General Meeting, and this will be held as usual at Hatfield Woodhouse Club commencing at 7-30pm. This is an opportunity for members to put forward their ideas of what they would like the club to be doing during the forthcoming year.
Following on from our recent visit to Thorne Community Wood, Karl who had invited us there joined us at Quarry Park one evening and escorted us on a Bat Walk! This is the first time we have done this so was unsure whether we would see any bats but, after around an hour of walking along the perimeter of the woods, we eventually picked up a signal on the detectors. There were a couple of what we believe to be pipistrelle bats flying around. We then made our way back across the park towards the car park where we detected more bats! Karl explained that Quarry Park is a good place for bats due to the tree line and open space. It was a very interesting evening and we are very grateful to Karl for arranging this for us and sharing his knowledge of these fascinating animals. We are hoping to be able to offer some Guided Bat Walks next year, so watch this space!!
Our October work party took place on Friday 7th and we had a record turnout of volunteers! There were 18 of us in total, including 4 new recruits and 2 DMBC Rangers. We split into two groups, one of which went around the park litter picking. They did a great job and collected 6 bags of rubbish. The rest of the team set about filling in some of the many rabbit holes in the central grassed area. A huge thank you to Dunsville Quarry for donating the sand, and to Paul for collecting it in his trailer. Riley the dog thought it was a good game digging the sand out of the newly filled holes! We had a break for refreshments and enjoyed buns baked by Debra before continuing with our tasks. It was a great morning’s work and we managed to beat the rain! Thank you to everyone who joined us. Our Coffee Morning is scheduled for Saturday 29th October at Hatfield Community Library 10am – 12 noon. There will be a raffle, tombola, refreshments and a Carved Pumpkin Competition. The competition is open to adults and children with a small fee to enter. There will be a prize in each category. You can drop off your carved pumpkins at the Library from Thursday 27th or bring them along on the day. The voting for the best ones will take place during the event and be announced at the end, around 11.45am. If anyone would like to donate any home baking to sell that would be much appreciated. There will also be special Halloween Plant Pot Buddies (upcycled golf balls) on sale too! Please come along and support us and vote for your favourite Pumpkin.
Work parties are usually held on the first Friday of each month, weather permitting. There is always plenty of work to be done, from litter picking, clearing paths and cutting back vegetation. Equipment is provided but please ensure you wear suitable clothing and footwear. The next events are scheduled for Friday 4th November and Friday 2nd December at 10am –12 noon, meet at the Green Flag. Full details will be published on our Facebook page ‘Friends of Quarry Park’ or you can email us at thequarrypark@gmail.com or call us on 07546 595144.

It was a memorable week for all the wrong reasons after our Autumn Social evening with the passing of the Queen. Even as she was 96 years old her death came suddenly and was a shock to the whole nation. It was decided that the opening meeting of the Autumn Programme went ahead with a 'Members Night' when members brought a selection of prints to share with other members. The prints had a wide range of subjects, were laid out on tables for previewing before each members presented their images and to talk about what inspired them to take the shot. Many of them produced some questions by others and provided lively discussions.
The meeting on the 19th September was postponed as a matter of respect for the late Queen's State Funeral' and will hopefully will be re-scheduled at a later date within the new programme. Unfortunately the first speaker for the new programme Tracy Lund from Hull was taken ill with covid and had to cancel her talk at the last minute, however the acting chairman rallied to the situation and gave an excellent talk complete with projected images from a tour of Yellowstone National Park showing the diversity of wildlife, hydrothermal features including “Old Faithful” the world famous geyser.
Some of the best times for taking photographs are the “Blue Hour” and the “Golden Hour that take place each morning and evening. The morning “Blue Hour” starting a few minutes before sunrise with the evening “Blue Hour” starting a few minutes after sunset. The periods immediately after 'sunrise' and just before 'sunset' are known as the “Golden Hours” and last around an hour, so check the timings of the sunrise and sunset and plan ahead and get to your location early.
With soft light available, both “Blue Hour” and “Golden Hour” lend themselves to landscapes and cityscapes. Buildings in cityscapes and trees in landscapes also benefit in the “Golden Hour” with long shadows helping to form compositions that add to the impact of the image.
As longer shutter speeds will predominately be used during these periods the use of a tripod and remote shutter release or the camera's inbuilt timer to operate the shutter are recommended. Shooting in aperture mode will allow you to set an aperture that will keep the overall image sharp and with the ISO set at 100 or as low as possible that keeps the image clear and bright, the camera will then determine the correct shutter speed for a good exposure. Manual mode is another option to try – experiment with different settings till you find what you like. Finally it is preferable to shoot in RAW as more information can be gleamed from darker areas in post production editing.
