Hatfield Community Library Some good news for our borrowers who like to use the computers. DMBC has provided us with new public computers which have Windows 10 and new keyboards. The family history sites are now easy to access so if you want to do any research Ancestry and Find My Past have so much on them to look at to help your search. It is official now, our Christmas Fayre is on Friday November 30th. We are joining with the Church and HTC to link in with the Carol Service and the switching on of the village lights. Hopefully the residents of Hatfield will turn out to support all these events as they have in the past. If anyone had any suitable raffle prizes they would be gratefully accepted. For avid readers, we have been collecting good hard and paperback books for our book stall. Our October events were in too late to advertise but in case the publications are out before the end of October, we have a Drama event on Saturday October 27th at 7:30pm. The Cast drama group will be entertaining us with a selection from the works of Yorkshire Authors. If the last performances were anything to go by, it should be a very entertaining night. The cost is £5 but refreshments are provided and you can bring your own wine etc. One of the advantages of working in the library (apart from the good company) is the access to the books. When chatting to borrowers, I often ask about the books they have read to try to get some ideas for myself and other borrowers. From I have discovered a writer called Lucinda Riley. I had to do a search for a book by Jaqueline Winfield for a borrower. The cover looked a bit old fashioned, although it was written in the 2000s but the story, about a young lady private investigator, seemed interesting, so again I have been introduced to a new writer. The time period of the books covers the era from WW1 to WW2. The pile of books on my bedroom floor is steadily growing! We have a steady supply of books to sell. With an offer of two books for 50p it is worth trying different authors. We also have a table of unloved books at 10p each. While trying not to make the library look too much like a jumble sale, we feel sad if we have to consign books to revival without trying to sell them first. Thank you to all those people who have donated books in a variety of conditions - we can always make some money from them. The Games Café became a victim of its success so we have had to split it over two sessions on different days. Bridge for beginners and improvers will be on Monday afternoons from 1:30 -3:30 I have been told it is useful to have played Whist. The other games session is now on Tuesday morning 10:30-12:30. Everyone is welcome to come along to play, chat and have a coffee and biscuit (or two). WEEKLY CLASSES - Monday, FREE Rhyme Time 10:30, Children’s stories and songs. This is a fun session for pre-school children and parents/carers. Very young children are welcome. Parents can stay on afterwards and have a chat and coffee or read to their children. Refreshments are included. Yoga £5 per session or £20 for 5 sessions 6:30- 8:00 Tuesday, Art Class,10:00-12:30. Tuition is available to help beginners and experienced artists. New members are welcome. You do not have be good at art to enjoy this class. Yoga 6:30-8:00pm Readers’ group on the last Tuesday of the month 3:00-4:00pm. We read a variety of books and most of us have read and enjoyed books which we might otherwise have passed over on the shelf. Wednesday Supported Yoga 3:00-4:00pm, Gentle Yoga 4:30-6:00pm, Stronger Yoga 6:308:00pm. Yoga is an excellent way to keep your body supple. The classes are suitable for a range of abilities as Judy, who runs the classes, makes sure everyone can do the exercises within their capabilities. Friday, Readers’ Group on the last Friday of the month 10:30-12:30. Needles and Pins twice a month. 10:30-12:30. This is a friendly craft group which would welcome new members. New members are always welcome to these groups. Please ring the library for more information about any courses. It is important to check, particularly in the holiday times, that these courses are on. The Yoga and art classes do have a charge for tutoring. Tel. 842064 email hatfieldcommunitylibrary@gmail.com

Hatfield Woodhouse Primary School By: Lloyd, Lydia, Emily and Masie Hello, we have all been working very hard on our work and have progressed with the help of our brilliant teachers. Here are some things that have been going on in our superb school… Arts week The first week back we had an Arts Week. All of the classes did different things. Y1 completed cave man drawings and tribal masks , Y2 made some Ndebele African dolls , Y3 did Indian art and looked at paintings on Elephants , Y4 drew Mandela in the playground and also drew elephants and Y5 and 6 looked at Banksy stencilling and graffiti. Poetry Before the holidays, every class in KS2 entered a poetry competition. When we came back to school, some of the pupils received news that their poem was being published! For those whose poem was not published, they received a special bookmark. This week we entered another competition, we are hoping we will have the same luck this time. Year 1 and Year 2 School Trip On Tuesday the 11th of September, Year 1&2went on a school trip to the National Services museum in Sheffield. The reason they went on this school trip is that they are learning about the great fire of London. Whilst they were there, they sat on real fire engines and when they got back, they made box models of the houses on Pudding Lane.

Showing Off at Thorne Camera Club To start the new season, there is an Exhibition of members’ work in Thorne Library. Entry is free, and prints are to be rotated, so an ever changing display. Please go along, enjoy the pictures, and see the current standard of work, which is constantly improving. Any members around will be more than happy to chat to you about the images, and the club. The Autumn programme got off to a good start with members showing holiday photos. A visit to Iceland and Greenland was not for everyone, although the images of icebergs and glaciers are stunning. Some super images were taken around the UK, and also on the Club’s Summer Outings Programme. There were landscapes and seascapes, action and sport, as well as low light photography. All members were keen to show their images and prepare for the forthcoming competition. Mr Royston Packer DPAGB, AWFP, LINSWP , recently arrived in the area from South Wales, was a new and welcome addition to the YPU judging panel. With his easy style, sense of humour, keen interest and photographic experience, he set about the somewhat daunting task of judging the large number of prints. He judged on the night, a new experience for him, which he took in his stride. Shortlisting prints in the Open section, as a first round, was difficult enough, but the standard was so high, he had a large number, so shortlisted a second time. Those not in the final group were Commended. His final selection in the Open section saw Allen Denby take 1st place, with ‘Open Wide’ , 2nd was Bill Mitchell. and 3rd Colin Jarvis. Highly Commended were: Allen Denby, Mel Brown (3), Dan O’Shea, David Ulyett and Stephen Wall. In the Theme, Photos from the Outings, only seven prints were entered, so Roy said that everyone should be Commended at the least. He commented, as is usual, on every print, giving helpful hints and tips, critique not criticism, as he pointed out. First place went to Lynda Ulyett with ‘Leap of Faith’, 2nd to Bill Mitchell, ‘ Amy on the Humber’ and 3rd to Terry Lockwood with ‘Spurn Lightship’. Highly Commended were: Tom O’Shea, Norman Pugh, Lynda Ulyett, Bill Mitchell, Terry Lockwood. Members are now looking forward to an activity packed programme in the coming months, with invited speakers, tutorials, practical sessions, a visit to Dearne Valley CC, and more competitions including the first Interclub Competition. If you are interested in Photography, please go along to the club as a visitor to see if it suits you. You’ll be made very welcome, they are a friendly group. Or contact the Chairman on 07463821182, or email thornecameraclub@yahoo.co.uk for more information. Meetings are Mondays 7.15pm in the Methodist Church Hall on King Street, Thorne DN8 5BA.

Community News HATFIELD WOODHOUSE AMATEUR GARDENING SOCIETY Our second meeting of the new session was held at Hatfield Woodhouse Club on Tuesday 2 October. The guest presenter was Tina Greene. Tina is a glass artist based in Barnsley whose work ranges from small ornaments to stained glass windows. Tina started by telling us about the work she did, with a large group of volunteers, to build a stained glass window commemorating the 26 children killed in the Huskar pit disaster, which was fitted into Silkstone Church in 2010. Then Tina demonstrated glass cutting, and showed how leaded windows are constructed from shaped glass pieces and lead strip which has an “H” form cross section. We were also told about other artistic glass techniques, well illustrated with photographs and samples of glasswork. And Tina had a fine display of work on show, for sale at the end of the evening. This was an enjoyable and well received presentation. It was announced that the meeting on Tuesday 4 December will be a social event at which a buffet will be served. This will be free for members, guests will be charged £5. Formal notice was given of the Annual General Meeting and copies of the agenda circulated. The November 6 meeting will be the Annual General Meeting at which officer and committee will be elected for the forthcoming year. As usual, the venue is Hatfield Woodhouse Club with a start time of 7-30pm. Annual membership fees for the next year will be due at this meeting. New members joining at this meeting will be entitled to the free buffet in December.
