Welcome to the November 2021 issue of the Hatfield Arrow.

This year is just flying by, I can hardly believe its November already and it’ll soon be Christmas! Please send any Christmas news or event details that you would like including in the December issue before Friday 12th November. As yet I haven’t planned anywhere to go for Bonfire night, but I’m sure that I will be attending a fire or firework display somewhere. Just remember to stay safe and enjoy the fireworks! HATFIELD WOODHOUSE AMATEUR GARDENING CLUB The Club have now started their meetings at Hatfield Woodhouse Club. The first meeting was held on 7 September when we had an excellent presentation about the Wonkey Donkey Refuge at Cridlig Stubbs. This was followed on 5 October with a Gardener’s Question Time, with our good friend Lee Plevey supplying his expert knowledge. On 2 November the main item will be the Annual General Meeting, which will be an important event because last year’s meeting had to be cancelled because of reasons we all know about. And on 7 December we are hoping to have a Christmas party with entertainment. All meeting take place at Hatfield Woodhouse club commencing at 7-30 pm. Everybody is welcome, members and non members alike.

Hatfield Community Library Our first big adult event took place successfully on Friday September 24th, when Matson (Neil) Taylor came to talk about his best-selling book “The Miseducation of Miss Evie Epworth.” We Learned a lot about how he had the idea of writing the book, his research and how he managed to get it published. He told the tale with humour and insight into being a published author. So, if you are thinking of writing a book persevere but do not expect to a millionaire for quite a while! The audience enjoyed his easy friendly style of communicating and he was happy to chat after the event over coffee and biscuits. Our next author talk will be by Janet Phillips who has written a book with her husband. The book is called “Secrets, Lies and Butterflies.” By Derry J Philllips. The story is set in Grimsby in 1943. The butterfly bombs brought death and destruction to the town. The bombs were evil anti-personnel bombs which were tested for the one and only time on this Lincolnshire fishing town. The story follows two families through WW2. Other characters in the book include a German spy and the Americans soldiers led by Lt. Col. Elroy Baker. Date Nov.9th at 2pm in the library. (Free event) June Horbury will be talking about her book ”Life after Adoption” on Wednesday Nov.30th at 3pm in the library, I have some feedback about a couple of questions I asked in previous articles. The first was about Harold Edwards who wrote the poems which I included in my article. He was the secretary of the History Club in Hatfield which is held in the Barn. He had an interest in Hatfield Moors and there is a memorial bench to him at the northern end of Ten Acre Lake on Hatfield Moors. So next time you rest on this seat imagine Harold composing his poetry whilst enjoying the scenery. I may inspire you to write a poem. Another query about the Monkey Run was also answered. Firstly by a gentleman from Thorne (which I mentioned last time) and the by a lady from Hatfield. She remembered that the Hatfield Monkey run in the 1950s/60s went from the boundary of Hatfield House (now demolished) to Dr Water’s house. The boys would sit on the fence (sounds familiar - sorry guys) as the girls walked by. Didn’t Andy Williams sing a song about that? Hatfield House was believed to have been built in the seventeenth century by John Hatfield who was a captain in the Parliamentary army. The Hatfields lived there until Anne, the daughter of his great- grandson, married William Gossip. The Gossip family lived there until Mr Gossip built ParkLane House (later Wyndthorpe Hall) and moved there. The house was taken over during WW2 for airmen from R.A.F. Station LIndholme. When they moved out, squatters took over until Thorne Rural District Council made it into flats. It was later sold by public auction when the Hatfield estate was disposed of by the trustees. There was a total of 5.86 acres which included the house, gardens and woodland. The house, like many of our old historical houses, was demolished, the timber from the woods sold off and the new estate bit, Amanda Drive and Parkways, was built in its place. Hatfield House Farm, cottage and stables were sold separately. The Coach house still stands at the end of Parkways. Thanks again to Ben Brown for his information and Photos. WEEKLY CLASSES - MONDAY. FRIENDS OF QUARRY PARK Luckily the weather held for our October work party on Quarry Park although I did have to hang on to the Green Flag pole at one point so I wasn’t blown away! There were 2 Park Rangers and 8 enthusiastic volunteers and we started off by attacking the overgrown brambles and weeds that were encroaching onto the zip wire path. Sadly some blackberries were sacrificed in the process but all in the interests of safety for the zip wire users. After nearly an hour of cutting, raking and clearing away, we were ready for our break of hot drinks, biscuits and nibbles! Refreshed, we then tackled the overhanging and dead branches along the path that leads to Broadway and a few more along the Home Straight path. Some work was done on the second clearing in the woods & 2 went litter picking & collected 2-part bags full plus a bit of scrap metal. Thanks to all our hard working volunteers and the Rangers for their support & expertise. The November Work Party will be on Friday 5th, meet at St Mary's car park at 10am, with sensible footwear & clothing, if you would like to join us just come along or email us at thequarrypark@gmail.com. You could follow us on Facebook - The Friends of Quarry Park – or look on there for further details.

In a previous article, I wrote about the number of thefts of motor vehicles that were stolen from domestic properties where the offender did not have to enter the house to steal the car keys beforehand. Unfortunately, this type of offence continues across the Country including South Yorkshire. In certain parts of the Borough, houses are targeted purely for the make of car parked at the address. Prestige German cars are among those favoured by thieves. The stolen vehicle can have its identity changed and sold on to an innocent buyer or exported abroad. Some vehicles are dismantled and the parts sold on to dealers or people simple wanting additional parts for their own vehicle. If you have a car that does not need a key to unlock the vehicle or start the engine, your car is vulnerable to this type of attack. Your key fob transmits a radio signal, which is active even when the fob is not being used. A thief can stand outside your house and use a device, which will pick up the radio signal when the key fob is inside your house. An accomplice standing next to your car will use a different device, which receives the signal picked up by the first offender and uses the signal to unlock the car and start the engine. It is not necessary for the key fob to be inside the car for the engine to start. Once started the thieves will drive off with your car. The engine will keep running until the thief reaches their destination. A new key will be programmed, which is used to start the car at any time. If you have a keyless car fob, you must purchase a device called a Faraday pouch. You place your car keys into this pouch when not in use. An internet search using the phrase “Faraday pouch” will result in many sites offering this device. If you are unable to access the internet, these devices can also be purchased at Halfords and Argos. Whilst at home you can place your car keys into an aluminium tin to block the signal. Whilst not as effective as a faraday pouch, it will restrict the range of the signal. One person placed their car keys into the microwave, which was very effective but forgot the keys, were in there, and turned the microwave on to heat up a cup of coffee. This resulted in damage to the microwave and the need to purchase a new set of car keys. A very expensive mistake. Keyless car theft is not the only type of vehicle theft occurring. In some recent cases, vehicle keys left on a table inside the front door have been stolen by reaching through the letter box using a pole or similar with a hook on the end. The main prevention technique in this case, is to take your keys to bed with you. Do not leave car keys on a table inside the door on the kitchen work surface. The belief that offenders will come into the bedroom to steal keys is not one supported by statistics. There is only one report of this happening and the vehicle in question was a Supercar valued at over £300,000. If the thief steals the car using the ignition keys, that also means the alarm system and immobiliser are inoperative. Consider fitting a tracking device to your vehicle or a separate physical security device. Secure your house to reduce the chances of becoming a victim of burglary. If your doors have Euro profile cylinder locks that are more than two years old, change the locks for ones that comply with Security standard SS312 Diamond or TS007 3 star. If every householder in Doncaster fitted security rated door locks to their property the number of burglaries would drop drastically. Information on security rated locks is available at your local Master locksmiths or on their website at http://www.locksmiths.co.uk/faq/lock-snapping-mostsecure-lock-cylinder/ Burglary prevention advice is available on the South Yorkshire police website at Also Fit Alarms https://www.southyorks.police.uk/find-out/crimeprevention-advice/ Eamonn Larkin Designing out crime / Crime reduction officer Doncaster Police Station Eamonn.larkin@southyorks.pnn.polioce.uk

Interested in Woodturning? Would you like to meet up with people with a similar interest? How about coming along to Doncaster Woodturning Club? We are a small, growing band of people, just like you, who have found enjoyment and the occasional small profit from shaping wood on a lathe. Projects range from boxes, bowls and platters, candle holders of all sorts of shapes and sizes, model steam engines and artistic pieces which include wood inlays, piercing and colour. Pieces both useful and purely decorative. Members come from a wide range of backgrounds, though most have a practical nature and, inevitably, many are retired. They all love working with wood in one way and another. We meet at Finningley Village Hall twice a month. On the second Monday we have a Skills Night when members share skills, experience and ideas with a practical session; there are several lathes tin use – ideal for people new to turning! On the last Monday of the month a professional or a club member will demonstrate making one or more pieces, taking questions as they go. There is also an opportunity to socialise over a cup of tea and a biscuit. Both sessions start at 6.30pm and last till just after 9pm. There is the occasional trip, usually on a weekday, to a place of ‘woody’ interest (like sawmills, chainsaw carver, small manufacturers of equipment and materials, and shows). There is usually a pub lunch as well and often the chance of a bit of retail therapy! In recent months we have been experimenting with Zoom based Workshop Chats from members workshops on a Monday evening when we aren’t meeting at the Village Hall. An ideal opportunity to ask questions and watch in more detail how other Members do things – the successes and the failures! Like to know more? Phone Geoff on 01977 646902, Tony on 07903 325949 or Chris on 01226 725647 for a chat and more details. Or just pop along to a Skills Night.

You would be very welcome!

A Welcome at Thorne Camera Club The Autumn programme now under way has many different activities planned for the experienced photographer and beginner alike. New members are always welcome no matter what camera they use, their experience or ability. Some members use a dSLR, some a mobile phone, or anything in between. At least one members is using film. One thing everyone has in common is their interest in Photography. Several new members joined during the lockdowns, and some previous members have returned to the club. Everyone is looking forward to getting the 21/22 Programme under way. The current Programme Secretary organised a private photo shoot at Selby Abbey courtesy of Fr. J. Wheatman, Vicar. It is a beautiful building inside and out, but with the right weather conditions through the stained glass windows it’s interior is transformed. To the sounds of the organ being played by a visiting organist from Norwich, members enjoyed a memorable 90 minutes taking some wonderful and interesting photos. The long awaited AGM resulted in changes to the Committee as four key members felt it time to step back allowing new ideas and impetus to come from the change. Founder members David and Lynda Ulyett, who started the club as it is today in 2013, along with Jackie Woodward and Graham Linley who both have had an important role in the club for several years, will take a break, although all of them remain valuable members of the club available for support should anyone need it. The new committee along with contact details will be announced in the next issue, but you are welcome to go along to a meeting anytime.
