This year is just flying by, I can hardly believe its November already and it’ll soon be Christmas! Please send any Christmas news or event details that you would like including in the December issue before Thursday 16th November. As yet I haven’t planned anywhere to go for Bonfire night, but I’m sure that I will be attending a fire or firework display somewhere. Just remember to stay safe and enjoy the fireworks! Best Wishes

Celebrating God’s World Welcome to our new school year report from Travis St Lawrence CE Primary School. It has been such a wonderful start to the 2023/24 term and we are so proud of all the children who have settled in so well. This half term, our children learnt about Harvest and the importance of being grateful for the food we have. In church, our year 3 children led a service around the wonders of God’s land and the food we have been given. They shared the story of Ruth and how she showed unconditional love. The children created beautiful artwork to reflect their respect for our wonderful world. All of the children and staff from our school also brought tins of food to be shared with the food bank. We interviewed some of the year 3 children about their experiences: Betsan- “I enjoyed the singing and reading my part in the Harvest Service.” Lulu- “I loved reading my part and seeing my nanny watching me in church.” George- “It was my very first time in Hatfield church and I enjoyed reading my lines. I got them all correct.” Kaleb- “I enjoyed painting my harvest picture and showing it to my mum.” Harrison– “I loved painting and walking around the church showing my picture to all of the grown-ups.” Georgie- “I enjoyed reading out my own prayer to show everyone that I believe in God. Harvest Samba was my favourite song to sing.” We hope that you have enjoyed reading our report and look forward to sharing another with you next month.

HATFIELD WOODHOUSE AMATEUR GARDENING SOCIETY On the 3rd of October the Club welcomed Sarah Hopps as its guest speaker. Sarah is a professional gardener, broadcaster and tour guide and has visited us in previous years. This time her presentation was about how our senses relate to gardening. Our senses are Touch, Sight, Smell, Hearing and Taste. We touch all of our garden tools in different ways and many leaves and stems have a characteristic feel, eg the furry feeling of the lamb’s ears leaves. Sight is very important seeing colourful growing things as individuals or in formal or informal displays, and then the Scent of flowers brings an extra dimension to displays, as well as the not so nice smells of rotting compost which is not getting enough air. Then the Sounds of the garden can be magical with stands of trees, bushes and grasses swishing in the wind, The sound of running water in streams, rilles and fountains and extras such as wind chimes. And we all know how nice freshly picked fruit and vegetables from our gardens and allotments taste, always much better than those from the shops. Sarah mentioned that there is now the fashion of wellness, and how this can be enhanced by being in the outdoors, and said that gardeners have always known this. Gardening is good for you, and everybody else who enjoys the results. This was another excellent turn out for this much appreciated presentation. Our November meeting is the Annual General Meeting which is scheduled for Tuesday 7 November at Hatfield Woodhouse Club commencing at 730pm. The end of year meeting on Tuesday 5 December will be our Christmas Buffet and entertainment. This is free for members but there is a small charge for guests.

Hatfield Woodhouse Village Hall
It has been another very busy month at the village hall. For the committee the main high point has been the culmination of many months of work to have internet access installed to the hall. The end is now in sight with the cabling installed and the hope is that the project will be commissioned in the next few weeks. From the publics point of view the most obvious change at the village hall in recent weeks has been the planting of new saplings around the carpark and field. These are to augment the tree planting as well as replace those trees vandalised over the last few years. This was all carried out to celebrate Earth day 2023. Although Earth day was back in early spring, tree planting had to wait till the right moment. The village hall is very grateful to the scouts of Hatfield 68th Scout group [our resident unit] for rolling up their sleeves and doing the heavy spade work last week. They have done a grand job and have rounded off a very successful project, involving, as well, Key stage 2 pupils from Woodhouse primary school and 47th Doncaster Brownies. Once again, our grateful thanks to the village youngsters! The calendar of village hall events, is filling up. Rehearsals are well under way for this year’s festive season pantomime, ‘The Wonderful Wizard of Oz’. This takes place on January the 4th, 5th, 6th and 7th. This is an extended season this year due to great demand last year. Tickets are available from Colin Hepworth on 01302840437 and online at https://tinyurl.com/ f8phbv5w. The festive season kicks off with the annual brass band concert on Saturday December 2nd. Tickets available from Colin Hepworth as above or any village hall committee member. We look forward to the return of the renowned Hatfield and Askern Brass band.

THORNE CAMERA CLUB The opening meeting got the new programme off to a sound start with an excellent presentation by Terry Gunnill with a wide range of images including Landscapes, Street Photography and Portraiture provoking some excellent comments and questions from the members. Andrew Foley gave a social commentary titled 'Berlin Trilogy' and 'The Coal Fields'. The talk started with the Berlin Trilogy with images of a Nuclear Bunker constructed in the 'Cold War' followed by close-up details of the Berlin Wall and finished with a series of images taken at the Sachsenhausen Concentration Camp as it is now presented to the public. The evening concluded with monochrome images taken on film showing the sites of the South Yorkshire 'Coal Fields' as they were in 2013 some thirty years after the closing of the mining industry provoking memories and comments from members who worked at the local collieries. The programme for October - November 16th October, My Photography over the Last 25 Years, Tony David Jones 23rd OctoberOpen , Print competition, Judge Robert Helliwell 30th October, Presentation 'Street Photography', Malcolm Hayes, The Amazing Photography of Herbert Crabtree ARPS, June Horbury 6th November, Presentation Infra-Red Photography, Peter Bayliss 13th November EXTRAORDINARY GENERAL MEETING The 'Club will hold an 'Extraordinary General Meeting' on the 13th November 2023 in order to finalise the future of the club and it is essential that all present members to attend. It is NOT a foregone conclusion on the outcome of the meeting, but all members should carefully think on taking responsibility of either standing for office on the committee or taking a more pro-active position in the running and activities of the club. Monty's Monthly Tip When starting out in photography, most beginners will, in order to get a feel of the camera start by using the fully automatic mode, noting the settings made by the camera for various light conditions encountered. This will quickly change to using the semi-automatic shutter and aperture based modes using the knowledge of settings acquired previously. As experience is gained (together with many images) using the semiautomatic modes that enable freezing of movement in sport and wildlife images, blurring movement in water-scapes and street photography and controlling the 'depth of field' for close-up or landscape photography, the next stage is to take complete control of the camera settings and move to the fully manual mode and set the shutter, aperture, and ISO to suit the image being taken and to obtain the required effects of movement and 'depth of field. With this accomplished and you continue to gain experience in general photography or a genre of photography of your choice you will master the art of photography. Enjoy your photography to the full! GOODBYE, MONTY

Friends of Quarry Park During the judging for the Green Flag earlier this year, it was suggested that the playground equipment was looking a little shabby and it could do with sprucing up a bit. So, on a sunny Friday morning in September, 9 of our volunteers gathered in the playground to give the equipment a much-needed coat of paint. Everyone chose a colour and set about sanding and painting the swing frame, slide and benches. After around 3 hours, everything looked so much better, and the biggest change was the two metal bins which were a muddy pink colour. They are now bright red and look amazing! Another great job done, and lots of positive comments received. Our October Work Party was held on Friday 6th with 17 volunteers and our Ranger Sam. There was plenty to do as always – clearing the prolific brambles from along the zip wire dip and various pathways, cleaning information boards and trimming the grass and weeds from around benches, signs and way markers. We also cut down several Ash trees which had died off due to Ash Dieback disease. These will be replaced with different species of trees, as part of our tree planting project, in the coming months. Our army of litter pickers did a great job as usual collecting rubbish from all corners of the park. We ended our session with refreshments and delicious cakes baked by Debra and Julie. Thank you to everyone involved for another great morning’s work. Don’t forget we’re holding our Coffee Morning on Saturday 28th October to raise funds for the group. It will take place at Hatfield Community Library, 10am – 12noon. There will be a raffle and refreshments and other groups will be taking part too. Please pop in and support your local community groups. Work parties are usually held on the first Friday of each month, weather permitting. There is always plenty of work to be done, from litter picking, clearing paths and cutting back vegetation. Equipment is provided but please ensure you wear suitable clothing and footwear. The next events are scheduled for Friday 3rd November and Friday 1st December 10am – 12 noon, meet at the Green Flag. Full details will be published on our Facebook page ‘Friends of Quarry Park’ or you can email us at thequarrypark@gmail.com or call us on 07546 595144.

Hello and welcome to another crime prevention article. Summer has officially ended, and we are now into Autumn and with the autumnal equinox having taken taking place on the 23rd of September, the nights are longer than the days. There is little to be done in the garden so why not turn your thoughts to the house and checking the security. Look at your door locks, if you have mortice locks, make sure that they comply with British Standard 3621. The kite mark should be seen on the door lock just below the bolt. If you really want the belt and braces approach to securing your doors, consider fitting the following. For doors with Euro profile cylinder locks - SS312 Diamond Approved or TS007 3 Star with TS007 2 Star Door Furniture such as Door Handle. Add ‘Sash Jammers’ and a uPVC door restrictor known as a ‘T Bar’ to your doors. Fitting Sash Jammers/T bar to your doors will prevent your door from opening if the lock is bypassed. Sash jammers can also be used on inward or outward opening windows. Consider fitting them to windows that may not have a window lock installed. If doing it yourself, read the instructions before attempting to fit them. If you decide to upgrade your locks and want someone else to do the work, use the services of a member of the Master Locksmith Association, details can be found at https:// www.locksmiths.co.uk/ Another troubling crime which is sadly continuing is the theft of motor vehicles without using the vehicle keys. Thieves use a device which can copy the radio signal from the car keys to open the car and start the engine. Whilst at home place your car keys in a faraday pouch to block the signal from your car keys. They are available for a few pounds on the Internet. A Disklok is an approved car security device which when fitted to your car steering wheel will deter even the most determined thieves from stealing your vehicle. Finally, do not leave car keys in a visible prominent position whilst at home. Thieves are still breaking into houses to steal car keys. For further crime prevention advice, visit the South Yorkshire Police website at https://www.southyorks.police.uk/find-out/ crime-prevention-advice/ Stay safe and secure.
