Welcome to the November 2024 issue of the Hatfield Arrow.

This year is just flying by, I can hardly believe its November already and it’ll soon be Christmas!

Please send any Christmas news or event details that you would like including in the December issue before Thursday 14th November.

The annual Scarecrow weekend in Hatfield Woodhouse takes place this month, 2nd and 3rd November. There will be lots of amazing scarecrows to see around the village!

As yet I haven’t planned anywhere to go for Bonfire night, but I’m sure that I will be attending a fire or firework display somewhere. Just remember to stay safe and enjoy the fireworks!

DONCASTER CANCER DETECTION TRUST

Halloween and bonfire night…..hope you all enjoy the festivities and stay safe.

We are thrilled to report that we have finally donated a second ultrasound machine for the Urology Department at Doncaster Royal Infirmary at a cost of £117,604. This will help in the diagnosis of prostate cancer which is now the most frequently diagnosed cancer in the UK. The additional machine will be used in DRI Theatre to avoid transferring the expensive kit which poses a significant risk if damaged. The original older machine (before our two donations) will be utilised at Bassetlaw as part of the development of a one stop clinic.

Don’t forget our annual Memory Tree will start in the Frenchgate Centre on Monday, 25th November until Saturday, 7th December (excluding Sunday, 1st December) from 10am to 3pm daily.

It doesn’t seem a year since we were last there! We have an interesting variety of new tokens to purchase in memory of your loved ones and, of course, you can write a message to place on the Christmas tree in the Centre.

If you need to get in touch with us our contact details are: 22 Wood Street, Doncaster DN1 3LW (passageway to the left of “Bake Battle & Roll), first floor (lift available), Room 104. Tel. 01302 325029. Email: info@dcdt.co.uk. Website: dcdt.co.uk.

As the office is not fully manned it is best to Email or telephone in advance if you are thinking of coming to see us.

We look forward to seeing you at the Memory Tree.

Hatfield Town Cricket Club

On behalf of everyone at the club we would like to say thank you for your support in the season just finished. Yet again it was a season of development on and off the field.

Our Junior section continued to grow and we are now the 'go to' club for children playing the game in our area.

The senior section saw the men win yet another Divisional title and the ladies play their first season in the top hardball league and they did so with great credit.

This was achieved with a great mix of youth and experience which bodes well for the future.

Off the field we opened our new changing and toilet facilities specifically designed for use by both women and men and we celebrated our 150th anniversary which amazingly got us a congratulations in the House of Commons!

Another year of great progress for our charity club which could only be achieved with the support of our volunteers and much valued and needed sponsors.

Friends of Quarry Park

The volunteers had an educational morning at Quarry Park recently when Mycologist Kevin Gilfedder guided us on a Fungi Foray. We were surprised and delighted with the number of varied species of fungus we found, including Poison Pies, Ink Caps, Crumble Caps, Purple Brain, Puff Balls and Death Caps! Most of these are poisonous so you wouldn’t eat them! We only covered a small area of the park as we kept stopping for Kevin to identify and describe the characteristics of each species we encountered so unfortunately, we ran out of time, but no doubt there are many more across the park. Huge thanks to Kevin for his time, knowledge, and enthusiasm, we all really enjoyed the experience.

After a very wet week, it was a beautiful morning on 4th October for our Work Party. Rangers Chelle and Sam joined an amazing seventeen volunteers, along with Kelly and Tom from TCV (The Conservation Volunteers). TCV brings people together to create, improve and care for green spaces. From local parks and community gardens to Local Nature Reserves and Sites of Special Scientific Interest; connecting people to the green spaces that form a vital part of any healthy, happy community, and supporting local community groups across the UK.

Four volunteers had a scything masterclass with Tom who demonstrated how to set up the scythes and gave instructions on the safe and effective operation. We had a brilliant time and really enjoyed the task and the opportunity to learn a new skill. Huge thanks to Kelly and Tom for arranging this activity, we will definitely be doing it again!

Another team set to work in St. Mary’s wood removing overhanging branches and thinning out weak or dead branches and trees. This is an ongoing task which will continue during the winter months to ensure the pathways are safe and accessible.

Other tasks included the planting of bluebell bulbs in the woods, hedge trimming and clearing overgrown shrubbery around the car park. The intrepid litter pickers did a sterling job as always, collecting 3 large bags of rubbish and a child’s bicycle which our rangers took away. We all enjoyed refreshments at the end with Julie’s delicious cake.

Another brilliant morning, splendid work everyone.

Work parties are usually held on the first Friday of each month, weather permitting. There is always plenty of work to be done, including litter picking, clearing paths and cutting back vegetation. Equipment is provided but please ensure you wear suitable clothing and footwear. The next events are scheduled for Friday 1st November and Friday 6th December 10am – 12 noon, meet at the picnic table. Full details will be published on our Facebook page ‘Friends of Quarry Park’ or you can email us at thequarrypark@gmail.com or call us on 07546 595144.

Hatfield Community Library

I have been thanking various groups of people who have supported us at the library over the years. One of the groups was the Hethefeld Trust. Luckily there is a booklet in the library which is accredited to The Hethefeld Trust and Ben Brown in 1985. Interestingly, it was printed by Hatfield High School. All proceeds from the sale were to go to local charities. The Hethefeld Trust is a registered charity which had its origins in the Hatfield, Woodhouse and Dunsville Nursing Association and its original remit was to help the poor and sick of Hatfield. As there were few hospitals in the 19th cenutury, the Nursing Associations were voluntary organisations which provided a nursing service to local communities in their homes especially those who could not afford to pay privately. The early associations were funded from funds to celebrate Queen Victoria's Jubilee in1887 The Hatfield, Woodhouse and Dunsville Association was found later by Lady Chetwynd. in 1911 to celebrate the coronation of King George 5th Warm Space. - The library is a Warm Space where you can come to keep warm and have a hot drink. Bring a book or your tablet etc. Wifi is available. Have a chat, do a jigsaw, become a member for free and read our books or just chill.

There have been reminders that Pension Credit has not been claimed by many people who are eligible. Even if you are not sure whether you are eligible or not, it is worth a try. If you do not have access to a computer at home you can use ours to find out what help is available. There is also information about some types of help available on the City Council website.

Family History. The Hatfield War Memorial Group. Our Family History groups are about to embark on a new project linked to the wonderful project they did about the men and women who gave their lives in the world wars. The new project is about the survivors of WW2 in Hatfield, Dunscroft, Dunsville and Hatfield Woodhouse who came home. If anyone has any names, information or stories, the group would be interested to know. The group are based in the library on a Thursday and Friday if you want to contact Sherelle or bring some information in. You can also bring it to the library at any other time when we are open and we can pass it on.

Talking Chair - The Talking Chair arrived in the library today. It was the idea of Joanne who posed questions to lots of young people in Doncaster. eg“ If you had £1 000 000 to spend on Doncaster what would you spend it on? What is your favourite place? Etc. She recorded their answers and provided a chair for children and adults to sit and listen to the responses using headphones. The recording is continuous so people can listen at any time.

Friday sing- a- long 6:30-7:30 Come and join us for an enjoyable hour (or so) of singing popular songs. If you can sing that would be great but the idea is for anyone who wants to sing with a group to come and enjoy themselves. Singing releases dopamine and endorphins, the feel-good chemicals in the brain that make you feel uplifted and happy. It also helps to take your mind off any problems in your life even for a short while. Dr. Xhan on “Morning Live "was talking about this just recently. We do have a charge of £4 which includes refreshments. OTHER SERVICES - Computers. Library members can use the computers with no charge for two hours. It is worth joining the library to be able to do this. Joining is free. If you are interested in your family history, you can use Ancestry or Find my Past to research your family. It is quite an addictive pastime once you get started. However, we do not turn away non-library members for an emergency session ie home printer/ computer not working or accessing benefits.

Printing/photocopying/faxing. Lots of people are coming to the library to use our printing and photocopying services from their devices or emailing them to us for a reasonable charge. We have printed many, many return labels, plane and event tickets etc. or photcopied documents for official purposes. If you are a library member, you can use our computers to print items. Or you can email your printing job to us to print off for you. We also print for non-library members.
