New School Year Welcome to our new school year report. There have been many changes at our school over the past year and this school year we welcome our new Acting Head teacher. Her name is Mrs Kenny and we decided that we would like to know more about her. We sent our Year 2 reporters to find out more about her. This is their report. Mrs Kenny is our new Acting Head teacher. She has come from a school in Rotherham to work in our school for at least a year. She has been teaching in different schools for the last 25 years but this is her first Head teacher post. Her job is to make people happy in school and check that everything is going well. She uses her computer a lot for checking her emails, writing timetables and reports for other people. She enjoys working in our school and really likes going around meeting all the children. Mrs Kenny likes doing collective worship but sometimes feels nervous. In collective worship she enjoy telling stories the most. She finds both upper and lower site very friendly and welcoming. We are pleased that Mrs Kenny has come to our school and we look forward to having her as our Head Teacher this year. Our report next month is from Year 6 children who will be writing about their visit to Whitby.

FURRY FRIENDS & FIREWORKS! With Bonfire Night and The New Year fast approaching many owners dread the effect that loud bangs and flashes have on their pets, with an estimated 80% of animals becoming stressed and fearful. As it is difficult to ask for quieter fireworks it is advisable to prepare in advance and try to make the experience as stress free as possible.

HANDY HINTS Take your dog for a walk before the fireworks start, keeping them on the lead just in case. Ensure you pet is safely inside with the doors closed. Restrict access to dangerous items such as open fires and glass doors. Close windows and draw the curtains. Put on music or the TV to mask outside noises. Prepare a den in advance where your pet feels safe and protected. If your pet has a favourite place to hide, leave them alone and do not try to coax them out. Plug in Adaptil/Feliway. Similar to an air freshener it releases pheromones into the air and is very successful at calming animals if plugged in 2wks prior to the fireworks starting. Don’t punish your pet, this only confirms that there is something to be afraid of. Act as normal as possible this will help your pet feel more settled. We highly recommend that your pet is microchipped. They may panic, escape and get lost. Ignore any fearful behaviour. Do not try to comfort your pet, they will pick up on your anxiety and this may make the problem worse. NEVER take your dog to a firework display, even if they don’t appear scared.

ANIMAL CARE FOR THE FUTURE

So please remember your furry friends this Bonfire Night and plan in advance!

Community News HATFIELD WOODLOUSE AMATEUR GARDENING SOCIETY The latest meeting of the Society was on Tuesday 6 September at Hatfield Woodhouse Club. The guest speaker was Liz Webster of Garden Blooms Nursery at nearby Fishlake. Liz’s subject for the evening was”. The presentation was basically in three parts. First Liz talked about the different types of places there are in a garden, whatever its size, in relation to the amount of sun and shade which different parts of the garden get throughout the day. There will probably be places of full sun, full full shade or dappled shade, and there will be more shade in the winter months. Liz then spoke about soils, from acid to alkali, and sandy to clay, finishing with the longest section, the plants (trees, shrubs, and herbaceous), which are suited to the various type of garden environment. Questions were taken during the presentation, and finally there were plants for sale. The evening was thoroughly enjoyed by everybody present, it being a fact filled evening illustrated by excellent pictures. On Saturday 10 September the Society held its Annual Autumn Show at Hatfield Club. More people than usual exhibited items and this is probably a reflection of the increasing number of people who have become members of the Society in the last couple of years. At the end of the Show, trophies were presented by the Society President, Mr John Brown, and he then acted as auctioneer as the unclaimed exhibits were auctioned for Society Funds, The Trophy winners were: Lewis Trophy George Roberts Trophy Darley Vase Flower Cup Harry Smith Trophy Mary Hepworth Cup Silver Jubilee Cup Vegetable Shield Fruit Shield Floral Art Shield Handicrafts Shield Produce Shield

The next meeting of the Society will be on at Hatfield Woodhouse Club on Tuesday 4 October at 7-30pm, when we will be having a Plant Sale. Members and guests are invited to bring along any plants which they would like to go to a good home, and to buy some which take their fancy. We have had our Plant Sale in Spring in recent years, but decided to try Autumn this year when we are all tidying up and splitting herbaceous plants etc. Everybody is welcome to come along, members and non members alike.

Community News Hatfield Community Library News Another summer holiday has ended successfully for our summer activities in the library. The final act, Kimmo, lived up to expectations as he had adults and children alike in fits of laughter. His timing is immaculate and his act flows from joke to joke with ease. Many children have completed the Big Read so don’t forget to collect your medal and certificate. Prizes winners will be notified. Watch out for our half term activities. Now it’s back to school for the children. I hope they will remember to use the library for information on school topics and story books. If we don’t have the book, then we can order it. A busy week ended on Saturday with an interesting writers’ workshop led by local author Lynda Stacey. Her book “The House of Secrets” is an E-book at the moment but will be coming out in paperback soon. It has already won an award and has been put forward for two others. We would like to run a full course of writers ’workshops at the library- date and time to be set. If anyone is interested, please contact Linda at lyndastacey@gmail.com. Hatfield Town Councillors’ surgeries will be held in the library at 10am on the following dates: Oct 8, Nov 12, Dec 3. NEW. I-pad/tablet taster course. We are trying to arrange this course so please ring to book a place. I must apologise if dates and times change after this article has been printed. This is why I always say ring the library for updated information before you turn up. People often come into the library asking for information on local activities and it is always a pleasure to be able to point them towards activities they may find interesting in Hatfield or Doncaster. We get lots of leaflets about things which happen in the Doncaster area and also job or educational opportunities. The library has really been pulled into the 21st century as we have become a hot spot for Pokestop for PokÊmon players. (I know I haven’t a clue what it is all about either!) I shall just continue to enjoy my walks round Jubilee Field and surrounding area while I can! All our activities can also be found on Facebook and Streetlife. Please share the activities with friends and family to help us to advertise them. We also put posters in local shops that kindly promote the library. If anyone has any suggestions for advertising the library to people who do not receive the Hatfield Arrow or Thorne Times, please let us know. Contact. THE GREAT BAY HORSE BAKE OFF 2016 RESULTS

Out of all the social events that I have organised or been involved with I have to say I love this one the most. It’s got everything, tension, allegations of underhand tactics, disaster, family rifts, tears, laughter… I could go on!! 3 years ago I had no idea that what I was proposing would end up with grown men arguing over the merits of “puff” over “flakey” or that there would be accusations this year of “sausage roll-gate” when our Steve bent the rules this year with his 2 entries in 1 category. One family even cut short their holiday just to get back in time and we had our very first international winner…Anyway, here are the details of this year’s winners and a few pictures of the proud competitors with their rosettes.

A grand total of £230 was raised for Parkinson’s Research from the auction afterwards. I would like to thank all those who entered, all those who purchased items in the auction and to all the staff at the Bay Horse. I would also like to say a big thanks to the judges and Michelle who do a sterling job under great pressure and to Janet Hofman for being so patient and helpful with the booking of the barn. Roll on next year. PW AKA The Difference

Make a Date with Thorne Camera Club The long, hot summer is almost over, club members are looking over their photographs from all the interesting outings and holidays they have been on, in preparation for the exciting, new programme starting soon. If you sometimes wonder what they all get up to, why not make a note in your diary, on your calendar, or ipad, and go along to find out out for yourself. Monday September 19th at 7.15pm in the Methodist Church Hall is the place to be, when members will be sharing their fantastic photos from all the great trips they’ve been on, and chatting about their summer activities. There’ll also be the new programme to discuss, all kinds of things to look forward to in the run up to Christmas. It’s surprising where the members get to. Apart from visits such as Drax Power Station, Fairburn Ings Nature Reserve, Bempton Cliffs and many more locally, some have been further afield, to Norway, Madeira, Thailand and even Vietnam, so the photos on show should be very interesting and inspiring. There’ll be tea and coffee, biscuits and maybe even cake, while members have a catch-up, chatting about where they’ve been and what’s on the new programme. There’ll be faces old and new, as some return from overseas, and new members join for the first time. A record number of enquiries were received during the summer, which bodes well for the club in the future. As if all that wasn’t enough, some members have been entering external competitions and enjoying some success. First of all, one member submitted photos to the Weather programme on TV and had their photograph chosen for transmission, which was a very pleasant surprise as the photographer was not notified. This was followed by a win in the monthly YPU online competition. Well done! Two other members entered a national competition and did very well, claiming all five positions between them, that’s First, Second, Third, Highly Commended and Commended. So well done you two as well. Then, to top it all, another member achieved LRPS status. Having been interested in photography for a number of years, developing style and technique, a submission was made. To achieve the distinction of Licentiate of the Royal Photographic Society a panel of ten photographs must be submitted, of a variety of subjects, and all must demonstrate a certain level of quality and achievement for the photographer to be accepted. This is something anyone would be proud of, and Thorne Camera Club congratulates them on their success. Whether you just enjoy taking pictures of family and friends and would like to improve your photos, or you want to take your photography to the next level, there is something for everyone at the Camera Club. Why not go along and give it a try. You will be made very welcome. Contact David on 07463821182 or email thornecameraclub@yahoo.co.uk, or just go along to a meeting.

Welcome back to a new school year at Hatfield Woodhouse Primary School. Following our successful SATs results in the summer, we are really proud to share some of our news and celebrations from this new school year. Year 5 – China and the Shang Dynasty In Year 5 we have had an exciting starting to our new topic which explores China and the Shang Dynasty. We made our own spring rolls, wrote up the instructions for this, celebrated the autumn moon festival, wrote moon inspired poetry and created our Chinese dragons. We will be sharing our learning with our parents later in the term, with our ‘Express’ event. They will even get to sample our cooking! Building works and new rooms! The school staff and our contractors have been working really hard over the summer to make some big changes at the school. Firstly, our new changing rooms for Year 5 and 6 are looking great! We now have modern and spacious rooms for the children to store their belongings and get ready for PE! In addition to this we now have a sensory room, which has been a real hit with the children! The room is multi-sensory and is filled with things to be explored.

We give a big thanks to our fantastic Site Manager, Mr Needham for all his work to get these projects completed. We must also say a big thanks to the IKEA warehouse in Doncaster, who kindly donated supplies to help equip the school and provide support to some of our families. School clubs In addition to our daily after school club, where children can enjoy a range of activities, we are also

26

really lucky to have a wide range of school clubs taking place during lunches and after school. Here are some of the activities children can enjoy:  Ipad Drawing and art  Maths Running  Tag rugby French  Baking Gardening. We also have a cheerleading club that is held at the school and run by Claire. This has been a big hit! Gardening Club The gardening club’s hard work has really started to pay off, as they have started to harvest their produce! We have seen a range of different vegetables and fruit including amazing beetroots, pumpkins and best of all – cucamelons (a mixture of cucumbers and watermelons)! Well done to Mr Needham and the children involved. Looking forward to sharing our news through-out the year. Today’s report is from Year 5!
